Just happened to spy this topic - I have done a lot of research into how much harm my “one cuppa day” coffee habit might be doing to me...
There are pros & cons on both sides, but for now I think the benefits outweigh the risks (see my “Cafeteria Queen” blog for details). In other words, I don’t think I’m poisoning myself with those 100-or-so mg of caffeine...
Kajero, I don’t know if you’re a member of our cycling group? I need to dust off my trike, it’s just been so stinking HOT!

Hi KAJERO,

I get what you're saying. The Covid situation has been very difficult to deal with. Isolation is the worst thing for depression, addictions of any type, OCD issues, etc. It makes everything so much more challenging. Even people without those problems are having a hard time.

It's funny because I'm not a coffee drinker, so I never have caffeine normally. Even for diet sodas, I would only get caffeine free. I've never tried any of those energy drinks. I started drinking protein shakes for a food plan I'm on and noticed I did feel "better" in the morning after drinking one. Clearer head and some motivation to get stuff done. It made me feel good.

Then I realized it has the same caffeine as one cup of coffee, so that's why I had that reaction. I assumed it was because my body isn't used to having caffeine. Of course the negative is that it's just temporary and over time a person would need to increase the amount of caffeine to get the same effect. I have a friend who has those Monster drinks daily which horrifies his doctors.

Hang in there. Once the weather gets better, you will be able to go riding and that will help a lot. Life will return to semi-normal at some point.

Thanks for caring!

I know I need to contact my doctor. I am taking my meds. I have yet to find a therapist/psychiatrist I like or trust.

A lot of it has to do with the loneliness due to Covid. I have very few friends and my family is doesn't have time for me due to all the stuff with Covid.

When I ride my bicycle I feel better but the weather has just not cooperated.

Hi friend. I think I now understand why I like my cup of coffee in the morning so much. It really does roll the fog away and help me to get going with my day. I like it with a touch of cream and a few packets of Splenda to help keep the calories down. When the days are hot like they are now, I enjoy my morning coffee iced...so delicious! My cup of coffee is once per day. If I desire more of that good flavor, I settle for decaf. It’s good too, but, of course, doesn’t lift me up like the morning cup does. It would be good to let your doctor know that you are getting down to the point of not being able to function. That’s always a red flag, along with the “I wish I were dead” thing. Your doctor really needs to know about that! I appreciate having another skilled pair of eyes looking over my shoulder with my depression. That second pair of eyes keeps me safe. Depression can be fatal. Take care and be safe my friend. emoticon emoticon emoticon

All things are possible.

Hello Stranger :-)

I promise you I will NOT lecture you!!!

I can understand why people get addicted to uppers.

" The stuff gets me high and feeling good. The :"I wish I were dead" thing totally disappears."

Have you been in regular contact with your Dr and/or Psychiatrist regarding how you feel? If not, I strongly suggest that you make an appointment.

Hugs,
Kris

This is so strange and I KNOW it is not good for me so please no lectures!!!!!

When I get so down I can't function I have been drinking a can of RockStar Energy Drink. Along with all the other bad stuff it has 250 mg of caffeine. The stuff gets me high and feeling good. The :"I wish I were dead" thing totally disappears.

I have to drink it early in the morning or I can't fall asleep at bedtime. Not that I can fall asleep at bedtime anyway. I have only done this three times in the last three months so hopefully I am not harming my body too much. I really can understand how people can get addicted to uppers!
