There is a big difference between 'feeling' depressed, and 'suffering' depression. I think everyone would honestly be able to say that at various stages of their lives they 'felt' depressed, and that is normal. That feeling can come and go even in the course of one day, however 'suffering' depression' is clinical, and that is one that doesn't just go away in the course of a day ... sometimes it can last weeks/months/years.

Often there is no 'reasoning' as to why we suffer depression. A reason isn't requisite for depression to happen, however there are a lot of things that we can do to mitigate it. If this is ongoing, and even if you are receiving treatment for depression, then talk with your Dr. If you are on meds, it may be that they need reviewing. If you get therapy, touch base wit the therapist sooner rather than later, however if you don't receive therapy, your Dr can refer you to an appropriate one.

As Miller so aptly put it "Give yourself some grace and kindness as you would a good friend."

Hugs,
Kris

I have felt depressed many times and didn't know why. I believe a lot of it has to do with my brain chemistry. Medication can sometimes help and so can exercise and sunlight, but it's hard to get motivated to do anything when depression sets in.

With folks who have depression, I don't think it's as easy as deciding to be grateful and have a super day. Of course, we can always try to remind ourselves of our blessings - that's helpful sometimes, too. But it's not helpful when people say, "Just snap out of it" or "You have no reason to be sad" or "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" or "You can choose to be happy." If it is, indeed, brain chemistry or environmental factors, it's much more complicated than that.

Give yourself some grace and kindness as you would a good friend.

Have you ever felt depressed and don't know why???? Supposedly, you should make the decision when you wake up to have a super day, and be grateful for the wonderful day ahead and look forward to the gift of another day to live and choose to do what you want, you're in control. Well guess what! It's not working. My .motivation left with the wind.

I'm glad that your found the inner strength to get some exercise in. I bet you felt a lot better after! I don't know of anyone who kicks themselves for getting some exercise in, but know a lot who kick themselves for NOT getting the exercise.

One of the SP trivia questions says that exercise can be as effective as medication at helping depression. It was a great accomplishment to get in some exercise. emoticon Sometimes if I am mad or sad I will take a walk by myself by for some reason I don't do that when I am in a funk. emoticon
