What is your comeback when...

Yes-I'm ready to answer this one -as it HAS happened to me & I knew it would b/c I CHOSE to be a L.I.L.Mommy {MY mom inspired me -she had TWINS at age 40!}.I just simply said "I'M his MOM!" And warned her,as a waitress, she should be more careful with her comments about age.Ironically,she was saying what good MANNERS my "grandson" had!! I have ALWAYS done things late in life,never been a follower and usually people agree with views I speak aloud {after the fact& in private}.I've never "fit the mold"--been a tomboy,best in sports at school of both girls and boys,fought odds to get in a graduate school and won,had my softball uniform number retired first BEFORE BOTH Men and Women at my university,was told I was too old to find someone to marry w/o kids {by BOTH my older SISTERS}-BUT i did!-,etc. so this is NO SURPRISE to me,BTW, the waitress apologized....:) --Betsy

Thankfully I have not been mistaken for anybody's granny yet. But last year on my birthday my students (kindergarten) were wondering how old I was. I tried 100, they didn't buy it, I tried old enough to know better, they didn't "get it." Then one little guy looks at me and says, "Really Mrs. O., How old are you?" Since I try to answer their direct questions directly, and I am trying to own my place in time. I answered, "Today I am 47, honey." He looked at me and said,(Pardon, this is a direct quote) "Jesus, you're older than my granny." (I took a little satisfaction from my internal comment which was, "But I've seen your granny, and "I" have all of my teeth.") Not much you can do, I think, but smile.

I got the grandma thing on Saturday morning while I was at IHOP with my daughter for her birthday breakfast. Whether this guy thought I was the grandma or not I'm not really sure because of the comment I had made when he gave her $1 bill. I said "between this and grandma you're going to have a lot of money today." I knew I meant all the money that had come in the mail from grandma but the guy didn't and his comment made me the grandma. Innocent enough!

Hasn't happened to me yet. Luckily, I look young! Hee Hee. That's only because I color my hair. If I didn't I'd be COMPLETELY gray and I'm not kidding. I think I went all gray around age 26 though. Thank goodness for hair color!!

That's more the approach I take as well. Laugh it off. These "young kids" that work in these places think anyone that looks older than their parents is about to head to the grave. LOL

I don't think people are being malicious when they make that kind of comment. Let's face it, we are "older" moms. How 'bout just ignoring it, laughing it off, or just saying "nope these guys are all mine."

I know the gray in my hair does not help at all with people thinking I'm older than I really am and have considered coloring but it is so expensive and I've not been brave enough to do it myself.

I really don't think any of you all look old enough to be mistaken for grandma. But, how about saying "really? you think I look that old?" Put them on a spot to see what they will say next.

I'll tell you what happened to me. I was in the grocery store one morning when my son was about 4 years old. It was early, 7:30ish when this woman said, "Aren't you a great grandma taking your grandson to the grocery store." I looked at her and told her that he was my son and that she probably shouldn't make comments like that because there are a lot of us "older" moms. The same morning, I took him to the barber shop, this guys says, "Wow, a Nana bringing her grandson for a haircut, isn't that somehting?" I looked right at him and said, "People that don't know what they are talking about should keep their mouths shut, I am his mother and damn proud of it!" He got up and left without getting his hair cut. I apologized to the barber because she lost a sale that day, but I had had it. She said it was no problem and was glad that somebody finally put him in his place.

Hee Hee - I would probably not correct if I got senior discount, either.

And I realize, especially where we are living now, that many many families start earlier. It just gets to me sometimes.

You guys are way too polite! LOL

I think part of it is that I am sensitive because I have lost so much weight in my face and I know I look older because of it! I was hoping to hold off the facelift until I turn 50, but it might have to come sooner! :)

Those are about all I can think of right now...

I loved it one time when I took my daughter to McDonald's for an ice cream treat the gal charged me "senior price" for my soda and I was good with that! LOL

I get tired of the mistake but I've just learned to brush it off because they are right...many people my age are grandma's. Much of the time the people hear the kids saying "Mama" enough it doesn't come up. If I am directly asked I just politely say, "No. I'm the mom."

I havn't had that happen...yet...I'm not sure what I'd say! I'd LOVE to have some in my arsenal come the day & am curious what others have said.

My DD6 & DS4 have recently started asking my age...45...& I tell them 100.

Yeah, don't you hate that? That's why I have some of my hair dyed purple - just to avoid being mistaken for a grandma. I don't really have a comeback for you, everyone in our town knows I'm nobody's granny!

Someone assumes you are your child(ren)'s grandparent? It happened again last night and I am sick of my usual...

"No they are not my grandchildren, but I hope they give me at least one in the future"

Or

I just tell them flat out that they are wrong, which I did last night.

Part of the my problem is that since I have lost weight, I look older because my skin is not catching up as fast as usual. And yes, I am giving myself a facelift - eventually... But I need some good and almost polite comebacks!
