I tore a muscle in my heel last year from doing it that way. Too ambitious for my body I guess - this time, I'm following the plan to the letter! :)

Yes, walking is fine. Walking uses a lot of the same muscles, but in a different way, and it is a lot less stressful on the body. I walk on my off days also.

muscles, joints, cartilage, bones... unless you are thin and have already been doing high impact sports (say tennis) I suspect your body will start sending you the PAIN message to RECOVER pretty soon ;-)
(oh, I should add if you are on a treadmill you MIGHT get away with it.)

Also, when you get to week 4 you will be thinking you want 36 hours to recover, and by 5 I suspect you will really want it (I have my 20 minute run tonight)

good luck!

I have ran a couple of days in a row and it is not good. Took me a couple of days to recover. Even on the 3rd day I was apprehensive. If I was a seasoned runner it may not have been so bad, but I am a beginner and it does damage.

We are supposed to let our muscles heal for 48 hours after a workout. When we run we get tiny tears in our muscles (shin, mainly) and those need to heal; once they heal the muscle actually gets stronger, if they dont heal the tears continue to get worse.

It fits better into my schedule to do the workouts two consecutive days - will this hinder my progress?
