Hi everyone! Haven't been here in a while, but I'm doing okay. Focusing on eating well. I see that several people mentioned night time eating and their struggle with it. For me, I've found that if I eat on the upper range of my protein level, that helps me to stay feeling "full". I keep yogurt, 2% cottage cheese, Fairlife Chocolate milk, and individual serving tubs of hummus on hand. Also nuts are good! I keep almonds and pecans handy - a 1 ounce serving size is tasty and good for you, too! I also like sweets, but my sweet of choice right now is Luigi's Ice (100 calories) or ice cold watermelon or sweet cherries!! Also, if you plan your menu right, you can have a breakfast, lunch, dinner, and TWO snacks during the day, and if you want one of those snacks to be after dinner, you can do that!!

yes- its those night time snacks that get me.

My solution ----- I make a n afternoon smoothie and save half for the evening. It is seeming to satisfy me. Its healthy - has protein powder in it - feels like eating a milkshake and still lets me snack around 8 and then Im done. Hoping I can keep this up - it may be the answer. compromise.

Hi,

I thought I would pop in and see that you are discussing nighttime eating.

This is a huge problem for me. I am very good all day and then start up at night. I know it is an emotional thing, but I also believe that I have a sugar addiction and also possibly a binge eating disorder.

When I first joined Spark I lost 40 lbs. pretty quickly and figured the rest would come off in due course. But I have struggled since, even regaining part of those original 40 pounds. During the time I was losing weight I had completely given up ice cream, and finally one night I broke down and had some. To some degree I attribute my weight gain to that one incident because things were never right after that. The flip side is that I do believe that giving up ice cream forever is probably unrealistic, at least for me. And also, I was continuing to have binging episodes with other sugary snacks (i.e. cookies) while I was losing weight.

I started losing weight again on January 1 of this year, and I am absolutely determined not to gain it back (I've lost about 14 lbs.). I am definitely more mindful of nighttime eating and the sugar addiction. But I still give in all too often and have a hard time stopping once I start. And my husband insists on having sugary snacks in the house, so removing them is not an option. And in fairness, while that is my biggest problem in that regard, I sometimes do it to myself without help from him.

You are right, it is a very bad habit and also a very hard one to break.

Night time snacking is a hard habit to kill. Im going to try green tea or water at night and see if that satisfies my eating cravings.

I feel alot stronger and Im building some nice muscle with working out - but Im sure not losing pounds or fat.

Challenge continues

Been working on my night time eating also JAZZ. It truly is just a bad, bad habit to fall into and a hard, hard one to get out of. I fill my frig now with fruit and that's all I allow myself at night. So far I found red grapes work really well for me, also strawberries.

I have eliminated all sweets during the day (not bringing them into the house helps a lot). I also try to keep moving as much as possible during the day, for some reason that helps.

I have also started playing a word game in the evening - keeps my hands and mind busy and also helps sharpen the brain.

slowly creeping up the weight scale................................... because last night night - there it was 147 pounds. Heaviest I have ever been. Its night time eating - snacking - emotional eating. Im good all day - and then make up for it - probably out of boredom at night.

Time to find some kind of low cal - healthy filling snack - so I can munch - and slowly stop the habit of night time eating. Hmmmm................... but my workouts are great.

Ok so - still working it

Hi! I've been a team member for a while, but not terribly active with the team. However, I am in search of all the support I can get and give these days, so I'll come and hang out here with you!!

I'm Heather, and I live in Sussex County. I've been here about 13 years. I was just laid off last Wednesday, so I no longer work in Morris County, but I did for 12 years!! I'm looking for a new job now and so I'm busy with that.

This year I decided I would finally take charge of my health and my fitness. On Jan 1 I said to myself "If I don't exercise today, then I have no chance of saying I worked out every day in 2016". So I got off the couch and did 10 minutes on the treadmill. Just 10 minutes, like SparkGuy said to start with. And guess what? I've worked out EVERY day for five months!!! I've also dramatically increased my strength and ability to walk on the treadmill and work out in other ways. This has to be the 100th time in my life I said I was going to do this, but this time I actually did it.

I hope we can chat daily and give each other support when needed. I have another team that has a small core of members that chat daily and that group is so helpful to me and to each other. Maybe we can build that up here as well.

Have a great day!!!

Can't believe it is the end of May!!!!!!!!! I am afraid my goals for this month are out the window but tomorrow I can begin again.

JAZZ you know that sometimes you just have to let go and allow yourself the freedom to do what you like (not what you probably should). Hope you had a good time.

motivation is such a big thing for all of us. Im in a 60 day prescription medical fitness program with my insurance co. Have a heart monitor issued to me - and time with a trainer. Very interesting and I have found it to be a real motivator. Im not even cheating with eating. I feel committed and responsible since this monitor is showing solmeone else what Im doing.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I will see some results and learn some new life habis.

started a 60 day fitness program at my gym. They gave me a ltittle heart monitor that shows where my heart rate is as I work out. 30 minutes o cardio - and 7 exercises that are not even all that challenging. Have my first meeting wed night that starts the nutrition plan. Lets see where this goes. For those in ocean county - this is called the PREP program - and it is a prescription fitness pogream my orthopedic doctor recommended. Find out about it = good stuff.

Whike working on resisting the dreaded late night snacks I found it much easier to just change what and how much I was eating. Skinny cow has some great options to satisfy my ice cream craving and I haven't had a giant bowl of Edy's choc chip cookie dough in over a month....I never realized before how I was indulging in like....4 servings at once...ugh gross. On an even better note. The sun is shining today!!! Feel like I haven't seen it in ages!

I am a little late to the daily chat, but I went back to the gym on Tuesday for the first time in months. My sister passed away 2 years ago and we started a scholarship in her name. I have thrown myself into making it a success while sacrificing my own health. I have been slowly learning how to balance both because making myself a priority is not selfish. I have set small goals for myself and planned out how to meet them. I am excited for my new opportunities.

Hi everyone! I would like to share my recent success in the hopes of helping- and possibly inspiring others who are 50+ & post-menopausal. I am 59-I will be turning 60 in November. I have always been very active and had no trouble maintaining a good weight until I hit menopause at 52. I gained 20 LBS seemingly overnight & could not lose them. I gained most of the weight around my middle and none of my clothes fit anymore! I struggled for 7 years trying to find a way to get the weight off. I work full time as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service, teach 7-9 fitness classes per week (Spin, Cardio Boot Camp, Insanity) and still the weight stayed on. After I turned 59 in November, I vowed to be leaner, fitter & stronger by the time I turn 60. I started on December 1, 2015 with 21 Day Fix. It is a 30-minute workout program along with a portion control eating system. I also started drinking Shakeology which is a meal replacement shake full of great nutrients. I decided to only weigh myself once a month to keep from making myself crazy. On January 1st, I had lost 7 lBS! I usually gain at least 5 LBS over the holidays so I was thrilled! I did a few more rounds of 21 Day Fix then moved on to 21 Day Fix Extreme. By March 1st I had lost 20 LBS. I just completed another Beachbody program-22 Minute Hard Corps and lost 3 more LBS and lost even more inches. I went from a size 10 to a size 4. So ladies, there is hope for us 50 (and up) somethings! I found that even though I was teaching classes, I needed to follow a program of my own-and stick with it. My workouts ranged from 22-30 minutes. You can all find that much time in your day. And I tried-I REALLY tried to not like Shakeology. I thought it was too expensive so I didn't want to like it. I drank it for a month and did my workouts. Then I switched to a less expensive brand that also had great reviews. I was going to try that brand for a month and compare results. After 3 days, I was on the phone ordering Shakeology because I was SO sore from working out. My workouts hadn't changed-just the shake. I guess because of my age, I really need whatever is in Shakeology to recover after my worklouts. And yes, because I am so convinced by what Beachbody & Shakeology have done for me, I am now a coach and am selling both the workout programs & the shake. Contact me if you want more information. I am not a pushy salesperson-I am sincere in saying this has made the world of difference for me. Good luck to all of us suffering after menopause. What a game changer it is!

Been away for a bit now trying to get back into the groove. It's that first 30 days that are the toughest. After that it seems tougher to stay on the couch than to exercise. I can just as easily talk myself into getting in some exercise as I can talk myself out of it. I just know I always feel better during and after the exercise.

Hi Sheila, and welcome to the team :) Congrats on the 5 pound loss! That is awesome! I think the real key here is to not get frustrated, and try not to lose it as fast as you can. After all, I'm sure our weight didn't come on us overnight, so it will take at least as long if not a few months longer to get it off.
Portion control, drinking water, and adding one good habit per month I think is ideal. And don't deprive yourself. If you want a cookie then have A cookie! Set doable goals for yourself. Slow and steady is what wins on this journey. The main thing is to stick with it! I will urge you to take your measurements. There are going to be weeks/maybe even months when the scale just refuses to budge even with all of your hard efforts. But, you will be losing inches. Honestly I would take inches over pounds any day!
Good luck to you!
Cindi

Hi everyone, I'm somewhat new to the sparkpeople community but I am really loving it so far. I have mostly been using the mobile app and logged onto the site from my laptop today for the first time to explore a little more and found this group appealing, so I thought I would introduce myself. I am working on my 3rd week here and am 5 lbs closer to my ideal weight. I started at 192 lbs and am shooting for 130 one measly lb at a time and making changes slowly but surely. I would love to hear tips and tricks to others success and I look forward to taking the journey to living a healthier lifestyle with all of you!

Just stopping by to say hello.. Hope you are all doing well. Nothing much new here, still keeping my goals and logging in what I have time for. I still haven't gotten a new computer. It's just not in the budget at the moment.. I haven't lost any more weight, but I really haven't been pushing myself as far as exercise is concerned. I know I can do better, but to be honest, I'm just not into it at the moment. Maybe once this weather finally warms up I'll have a change of attitude.
Enjoy your weekend all :)

Happy Monday All!
I've been at an out of town family wedding since Thursday. Had a lovely time. Only gained half a pound in spite of the drinking and excess eating. Guess the dancing balanced out the damage a bit. Trying to get back to focus today.
Sorry to hear about your back problems NJJAZZ. Like others here are saying, not something to mess with. I too have had my issues and know that gentle walking, consistently is the best exercise. Give yourself time to heal.
Hope you all have a great week ahead. The weather is so nice it seems hard not to!

Back pain is nothing to fool around with. I had spinal surgery 12 years ago. I had a 50/50 chance of ever walking again. Grace of God, and an excellent neurosurgeon, lots of physical therapy and I'm lifting patients like there's no tomorrow! Definitely check with your PT before you do anything! I will tell you that walking is the best exercise for your back!
