I had a good day yesterday. I had just heard Dr. Berg say on a video to not eat unless you're hungry so I did that. I rarely feel hungry so I wasn't sure how long this was going to last. At 5pm it hit me hard but I was ready. I had already prepped so I was able to make dinner quickly. This morning, I woke up hungry but had a meeting and some other things to attend to so I didn't eat until 10.

I started on Sunday (Mother's Day 2021) doing ADF (Alternet Day Fasting).

Sat., Sun., Tue., & Thur. are my feasting days. 2MAD (2 Meal A Day).
and Mon., Wed., & Fri. are my ADF (fasting)

Yesterday, Mon. was my 1st ADF day, so I had nothing but liquids.
8 Glasses of Water and 3 cups of coffee (2 coffees with collegian in them).

Today, Tue. I had a "Woosh", lost 2.6 pounds this morning. I was so excited. That's the most I have lost in months.

Today, Tue. I had Brunch at 2:45 pm. and I will have Dinner at 8:45 pm. (16/8 IF or 2MAD)

I am eating Keto and trying to raise my calories up to 1200 while keeping my carbs low and fats high and protein moderate.

Several months ago I started losing my hair density. I think it was due to doing OMAD (one meal a day) for over a year with my calories way too low (300 to 700 a day). When doing Keto it was hard for me to keep my carbs low and fats high with moderate proteins and get my calories in a good range. For me, that should have been 1200 to1500 a day.
Not my picture but is how my hair looked.

Lesson Learned.

I had been losing weight slowly but steadily until after Christmas 2020. Went from 208 lbs. to 158 lbs. while my hair was thinning.
I was a Type 2 diabetic with an A1C of 8.5 and got my A1C down to a normal 5.0. I know if my carbs are over 30 a day that will go back up.

Once I realized how thin my hair was getting and what was causing it, I started to do 16/8 IF (Intermittent Fasting) or 2MAD to raise my calories every day. Which didn't work for me and I plateaued (which I was okay with) until I started gaining and I still could not get my calories up above 7or 8 hundred. I have gained over 10 pounds over the past 5 mounts.

I have tried a lot of home remedies on my hair and I think some of them did help but until I started drinking on 3/30/21, Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides (Increased Calories 70g & Protein 18g a day) in my coffee I didn't see a real difference in my hair. I can now see my hair and nails growing and my skin looking better. I know I am sleeping more soundly and longer consistently.

I will know more about how the ADF is working by the end of this week, Sat. If the 2.6 lbs. loss sticks and if I keep losing.

There was a group of women in a Bible study on the book of Malachi. As they were studying chapter three they came across verse three which says, "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver." This verse puzzled the women and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.

One of the women offered to find out about the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible study. That week the woman called up a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest in silver beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver. As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that, in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest so as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot - then she thought again about the verse, that He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver. She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. For if the silver was left even a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?" He smiled at her and answered, "Oh, that's the easy part -- when I see my image reflected in it."

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has His eye on you and will keep His hand on you and watch over you until He sees His image in you.

Yes, I am aware of Brightline eating style. I personally do not do well with people giving me a list of all the things I can't have.
I prefer moderation or the 80/20 idea of "balance". I can wrap my head around doing that for the long haul. -- But I think I need to heal my insides first?!

My FBS in the AM ranges from 99-115. However my blood work shows elevated liver enzymes & I have been diagnosed with NAFLD. -- Due to previous kidney stones, I have no problem getting plenty of water/liquids on a daily basis.

My biggest "issue" is the lack of staying with anything for a lengthy period of time. My longest "average" is 8 months. Then I self-sabotage and go off the rails. There is a definite "pattern" with this over the past 15 years.

I know a whole lot of "stuff". It's the DOING that trips me up every time.

Thank you for joining this team. First, do you realize that you have your Spark page set to private? If that is the way you want it, all is good.

You are right our bodies are inclined to NOT let go of acquired fat/weight. But, we have our own will and I believe that we have the power to make changes that will allow our bodies to let go at certain times of some weight.

It all begins with your mind set.

I have been learning a lot from Dr. Berg and doing the Keto lifestyle since Sat.,10/26/19. So, I made a commitment to myself: No More Sugar!

Once I made up my mind, I went into my kitchen and threw away my bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, and anything that was high in carbs or processed food. (I could do this because it's just my husband and me). Don't worry I kept the things he really likes and he's fine with it.
Then I made my list of allowed meats, veggies, and condiments, and off to the grocery store I went (no snacks).

"Why"? My main reason was to get my blood glucose down into the normal range of 80 to 100. Then to lose about 70 pounds slowly as my body was ready to let it go. So far I have only lost about 40 pounds. Yes, I have hit plateaus.

** Important Things to Remember: **
1. Keep your plan simple. Do not complicate it with a bunch of rules that make it difficult.
2. Don't expect perfection. No guilt.
3. Expect plateaus.
4. Don't get in a rush.
5. Listen to your body.
6. Never give up on yourself.

Within the first ten days, my blood sugar dropped from the 250/300 range to the 100/120 range and I lost some water weight of about 10 pounds. I just kept doing the Keto lifestyle and a couple of months later I add the Intermittent Fasting (IF) of 16 hours of fasting (including the hours I slept), and an 8-hour window of eating only when I was really hungry (16/8 IF).

@BOBBIESOCKS-46 -- Such a challenge to deal with the tug-of-war re. food, cravings, and the older-body's inclination to NOT let got of acquired fat/weight.

I certainly have been "stuck" trying to make healthy changes. I don't feel like I eat particularly poorly. However, I have self-diagnosed as insulin resistant, and it seems that until I can get this under control, that everything I eat seems to keep me FAT.

I never had any major issues with weight until having 3 kids later in life. (post-30). Then stress and hormones and all manner of life's challenges, started me on a poor-choice path that I'm sure got me to where I am now.

In 2018, I lost 35 lbs via EF. But then I fell off that wagon and all the weight came back. Now with the past covid-lockdowns and the loss of my job a year ago, I've added 10#'s to my all-time high.

I truly want to be happy in my own skin. And I have a wedding to be the mother-of-the-groom in 3.5 months. I would like to feel nice & get a pretty dress for the occasion.

03/21/21 - Today's weight 169.0 lbs. I have gained 10.2 lbs since Christmas by trying to get my calories back up.

I'm not worried that I'm gaining but it is disheartening. Our bodies don't like to lose so it seems to be a cat and mouse game to outsmart the body. Dropping calories too low makes it lower the metabolism and hold on to weight and that is what I have done and now when I try to get my calories back to over 1200 my body says okay here's some more weight. It's just too dam smart for me.

I will keep working on losing weight while keeping my blood sugar in the normal range.

I live in Bonham Tx and we got about 6 inches of snow in the wee hours of Wed (2/17/21) morning.

Just like the rest of Texas our electricity is going off every 30 minutes and staying off for 15 minutes.

I have never seen this much snow in TX in my life and I'm 74 years old. This is a record year.

We are scooping snow so we can melt it to wash dishes and use for the commodes, dog, and chicken water.

I know the northern state are better prepared for this kind of weather. I feel you y'all in the northern states having harsh weather every year.

CHERIE38, I have looked at the keto-mojo web page and watched a video of :

But, I didn't know about the MOJO until after I had already bought the "Kiss My Keto" meter. (I did look at it on Amazon later and the Mojo was a little more expensive and so were the test strips). I already had a glucose meter because I have been checking my BS every day for years so I decided to buy the KMK meter. I just recently learned that there was such a thing as a Keto-Meter. I don't know how I missed that fact. (Thanks to you I now know that the test strips for urine don't work after you have been in ketosis for a while). The last week I have been learning more about when and how to use the meter.

The first time I used the KMK meter my reading in the morning was 0.1 and I wasn't sure what that meant. Today I checked it and my BS at the same time before I ate dinner at 8 PM and my BS was 83 and the KMK was 0.5. I had been fasting for 24 hours. I will check it again about bedtime to see what the difference is after eating two hours ago.

I have learned what a good reading is for Keto and yours look perfect between 1.9 and 2.7. I think I read or heard that you can divide the KETO reading into the BS reading and get the GKI (I think, I suspect I'm wrong about that). If that is so my GKI is 0.006 from my earlier readings. I shall see what it is 2 hours after my meal for the day.

Thank you so much for your interest and support. I think I still have a lot to learn about using the Keto meter and getting my GKI. I will post my next readings here later.

I take my glucose and ketone reading with a keto-mojo, it also shows what our GKI is.

I try to take it 2 hours after eating or drinking. I have found it interesting to track.

Yesterday reading

9:50 am was 101 glucose ----------- Ketone 2.7 with a GKI 2.0
at the 18.5 hour of fast 94 glucose -------------Ketone 1.9 with GKI 2.7

I started on Oct. 26, 2019 (475 days ago) by cutting out all Sugar and on Dec. 13, 2020 (425 days ago) I started IF.
I watch my Carbs and Blood Sugar.

"The Higher my Carbs the Higher my BS is and the Higher my BS the Higher my Weight".

MY 3 RULES:
1.) I can drink 2 leaders of WATER and some Coffee with cream a day.

2.) I need to eat about 8 or 9 PM each day so I won't snack at night.

3.) I need to be in bed no later than 10 PM.

My 1st ketone reading on my new "Kiss My Keto", ketone blood meter test kit.

My ketone level is 0.3 about 1/2 hour after lunch on Tue., 2/9/21

To answer your question, "Do you eat 1800 calories a day on Keto or low carb?"

No, I am struggling with getting my calories up from under 700 a day. I have been doing OMAD for about a year and I can't seem to eat enough in that One Meal A Day to reach any more calories than that.

You are right it is hard to get enough calories with the fat and protein we eat on Keto. But, I/we need to keep trying because it has messed up my basal metabolic rate or metabolism. I am trying to switch over to eating twice a day by doing the IF 16/8. I have tried for the past 3 days and haven't succeeded yet. I'm just not hungry.

You are doing good by keeping your calories up to 1200 a day. Don't be scared of going over that if you can. Because you don't want your metabolism. When your metabolism slows down you will not lose weight. In fact, I have even started gaining or bouncing 3 to 5 pounds over what I was 7 weeks ago which was 158.6 lbs.

I know it sounds crazy but I have learned this the hard way. So, if you are hungry eat but try to keep your carbs low and you will lose weight. It may be slow but that is good to lose slowly for many reasons. Even if it is one pound a week (or less) that is 52 pounds a year.

Now I'm going to try again today with 2 small meals and build up from there. We shall see how this goes.

Bobbie thanks for all the info! You are so kind. I have hit a wall and I'm not discouraged because I feel sooo good and I hve been exercising more tan I have in years. Do you eat 1800 calories a day on Keto or low carb? I have heard that my hair will get thinner and my nails will thin etc of I don't eat at least 1800 calories. I am afraid to eat that much - I have trouble eating 1200 with the fat and protein.

Geri, I know what you mean. My hair is grey, very fine and straight, and not near as dense as it used to be. I did buy a couple of wigs. One is called a Helo (I like it best) and the other is a long curly wig (looks like too much hair for me). They make me feel better about myself but they don't look as good as my own hair when it was fuller. My profile picture is my goal length and thickness.

I have been researching and learning about a lot of different remedies for thinning hair. I think I have found the answer for my hair (we are all a little different) because it's growing back in. I have about 4 inches of new growth so I had to trim the string ends off. My hair was past my shoulder blades.

I think what has worked for mine is a combination of oil treatments, and Dr. Berg's Trace Minerals, D3 & K2, and Nutritional Yeast. The oils I bought from Amazon were Castrol Oil, Aloe Vera Gel, and Fenugreek Oil.

Had a really busy day so I'm getting here late. Had my friend come to dinner this noon but asked her to come early because she wanted me to teach her another crochet stitch and I needed her to cut my hair. I was kind of worried about staying on Keto at dinner so last night I tracked what I was going to eat. It worked - it really does pay to plan.

Geri, I hope you join the 25 /25 Challenge...! It is just a few weeks in...! It really gives me a reason to continue on... Fasting, Staying on my Eating Plan, Staying Away from Trigger Foods...It helped me get off the plateau I was stuck on and probably a few more things too...

When I first started SparkPeople, I was hesitant to do challenges but now I see how they can really help...

You two are doing amazing emoticon . I'm impressed with the recoveries from your hips and knee surgeries and how well y'all are doing with IF. I have been lucky enough not to have any real issues with my hips and knee joints. I feel for y'all and I glad you have those surgeries behind you.

I do know what knee pain is like because I used to have pain in my left knee until I started eating better and cut sugar out of my life and started IF. This lifestyle really does work and I think my thinning hair has stopped falling as much and I have a lot of new growth. So I know it is helping you both too. So keep up the good work you are doing and keep refreshing your minds by watching videos and reading everything you can. If you find something new or something that is making a difference for you, please be sure and post a link in our "Links to Articles" thread. It may help someone else.

I have posted a lot of links in different threads on this team and on the other teams, so y'all can take advantage of those when you have time. Please let me know if you find one that helps you.

1.24.2021 = Day 65 IF for me. Glad I'm making this my "Way Of Eating".!

Happy about 1 lb loss, I did a 21 hr fast Sat. & a 24 hr.fast Sunday...!

Right before that last lb. left I took back the KEY I gave it.

Hey Geri,

So Glad to hear you have had such a wonderful recovery from your surgeries.!

I totally know what you mean about getting a good surgeon, it makes all the difference.

Before I had my Total Hip Replacement... (THR) I was in a lot of pain for quite some time... the surgeon could not believe I was able to walk into his office the day of my appointment. He said from the X Rays it was "bone on bone".! It was pretty bad. So glad it "took" so well.!

After the surgery and even now, almost 1 year after, I notice small improvements quite often... there truly is a light at the end of the tunnel...!.!.!

Hazel My first hip replacement was in 2011, the second was in 2016 and the double knee was in 2014. They are still working fine. I can't believe how great they are. I was barely able to walk for a while there. I was using a cane and if it weren't for these amazing apparatuses I would most surely be in a wheel chair. I will say that the pain after the operation was not much worse than the pain before and you knew there was light at the end of the tunnel. Do some research on good surgeons who are really good at hips or knees. The best info comes from people who have had this surgery not from the people in the medical field.

Geri,

How long has it been since you had your surgeries...? Two knees at once, not too many people do both at the same time...!

Since I have been cooking at home so much lately, my right shoulder is feeling some "tweaks" when I am chopping foods... I am right handed and don't feel very confident using a sharp knife with my left hand... Any suggestions for an alternative to chopping by hand...?

Thanks for the welcome Bobbie and Hazel and welcome to our newbies.

I just broke a 46 hour fast at 1:00pm. I feel great. I did 2 of those this week. I had been doing 17/7 every day for quite a few months and nothing much was happening so I knew I had to come back to SP and track my macros. It's working I lost 10 lbs the first 2 weeks and I'm down another this week but I won't weigh in til Monday.

Hazel I had 2 hip replacements and then a while later I had 2 knee replacements the same day. But I am with you on popping the hip. Now it's not a problem because the muscles have encased them but it is a concern. I think the 2 knees were easier than one hip at a time.

Bobbie I am going to look up Dr. Sten Ekberg. I don't walk much because I don't want to wear out my replacement parts. I would like to do 5,000 steps a day but usually its only half that.

Hey Bobbie and Geri... !

So Glad You Found Us Here Geri...! Bobbie thanks for posting those exercise videos... I will watch them... Way To Go and Keep On Sparking...! ! !

I don't exercise as much as I should ... I use my hand weights & rubber bands plus I walk and that is about it... I used to be so active...!

I am still recovering from Total Hip Replacement so I have been trying to be extra careful... I sure don't want to pop my hip out of joint... the thought of having to go to the hospital at this time really scares me...!

As far as IF goes... I have kept lists from the very beginning... with my daily cals, fats, carbs & protein in grams & %, plus eating times, date, a progressive day #...was it OMAD or 2MAD etc...

So far I haven't gone past 24 hour fasts but I usually do 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 hour fasts easy and feel real good about things... It is still a bother worrying about the carbs but I keep reading and trying to keep them down... I don't really enjoy the shorter fasts... there's too much "eating time" I do better with longer fasts with shorter eating windows... Eventually I will do some longer fasts... it will just happen just like IF just happened for me ...!

At first, I did 16 / 8 for several weeks... and I think that is what stalled me from the beginning... but none the less I did that but now I know I need to "mix things up" ... Today is 63 Days IF & it is consistent and shows me I can do it... I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found SparkPeople and the different teams and activities I participate in...! Everyone has been so great...!

I am only weighing 1 time a week. I am so glad I joined Bobbie's Lose 25 lbs in 25 weeks Challenge... I joined on both of the teams Bobbie is Leader on... Plus I did her Lose 5 lbs Instead of Gaining 5 lbs. Holiday Challenge... and I did lose 5 lbs... so there is that...! It is a slow go for now with the weight loss but that is OK with me... I want to keep it off and I have taken back the invitation for the FAT to come back to to visit me... that is one visit I can do with out... !

I like to use visualization and this is how it goes... I see myself literally taking back the invitation and tearing it up and throwing it in the trash can or I put it in the shredder...! I like the shredder best because it makes more noise... When I am out or at someone's home, I put invisible "blinders" on when something (bad food item) has a pull on me...!. Once I got used to them... they have been real effective...!

I'm like you when it comes to exercise. I don't like to do it, however, I know I need to. A few months ago I finally got myself in the frame of mind to get back into walking after not doing any for the past 5 years. I thought I was starting off slow enough by walking at a slow pace every other day for 1 mile. I did okay the 1st week then after the 2nd day of the 2nd week I bent over to pick something up as I was getting out of my chair and all of a sudden I got a spasm in my lower back and was down for over 2 weeks. So I have to cut back to less time and distance.

I am including 2 videos that have helped my understanding of the best exercise to do. What I got from these videos by Dr. Sten Ekberg is that walking slowly and building up mussels to be able to do HIIT for a few seconds once or twice a week is the best thing for our mind and body.

I lost what weight I have without any exercise but, my metabolism is too slow so I need to be able to do HIIT to speed up my metabolism. That is my understanding anyway.

You may be able to do more than me. Only you can know your exercise limits. I hope this helps you, Good Luck and enjoy your weight loss journey. Remember this is not a race, take your time.

Hi everyone! Hope your day is sparkling.
I don't think I have ever posted on this team before but I'm familiar with Hazel and Bobbie from another team. I too love IF and Keto. It is working for me. I was doing 12/7 IF for a couple months before I came back to SP. It really didn't work because my diet was not structured. I started watching Dr. Berg, Megan Romas and Dr. Jason Fung and realized that you need to change your IF hours up or you hit a wall. I lost 10lbs the first 2 weeks and then I stopped losing which isn't a big deal - it happens. This week I added 2 45 hour fasts.Have to wait and see what happens.
Do you exercise? What do you do . I ride my stationary bike but I just have a hard time
getting motivated when it comes to exercise..

Hi Hazel,

I'm glad to see that you are going longer with your fasting. Just remember you can mix it up when you need to. You also are losing weight which is the point. But, besides that, it is really good for your health.

I know it was hard to believe that you could go even 16 hours without eating but now you can see how easy it is. I'm so glad that you joined this team too. I love the Keto and IF lifestyle. It makes life is so much easier for me. Less time in the kitchen and easier clean-up too. More time to do other things, like posting on SP teams.

Hello Everyone... Hope All are well and doing fine...! The Days Are Getting Longer, I love the sunshine...!

The last 7 days for me have been One Meal A Day, OMAD and 20, 24,22, 23, 24, 20 & 22 hour fasts with short windows for eating...!

Today is Day 60 IF for me and I did 2MAD 19 / 5... 60 Days doing IF has helped me stay centered, plus I am eating better foods... I feel it is making a difference... This past week I lost 1 more pound. it's slow but steady... !

I really like it when my eating for the day is over at 7 P.M. but with "mixing things up" and the longer fasts, I did have times of eating later than 7 P.M.... but it's all good I am getting used to it.

Hello Everyone,,, Today is IF Day 54 for me I did my First 24 Hour Fast...! It was as easy as I thought it would be. I had a 2 hour eating window later than I usually eat but it's all good...

I ran some errands & kept busy all day. I am excited to have had the first 24 hour fast... I knew I could do it... now to work on planning it to end earlier but with all the hours I want... I worked really hard to get out of the habit of eating late... but I'm not going to stress over it...

It takes ingenuity some time to make things work for us. Some of us have it and some of us don't. You differently do. My Dubby's like that and I admire people that have that trait.

Bobbi, Thanks for the link to the video...!

For some reason, after I had my hip replacement... my FitBit was bothering me on my wrist... I even switched sides... so I hadn't been using it much... plus when pushing a cart or carrying something with both hands... or using a walker... the FitBit does not track any steps... so I decided to figure out how to make it work with that elastic strap and a needle & thread...my FitBit band has small holes in the entire band so it was easy to sew it using those holes...!

Looking Forward To A Bright New 2021... I Hope Everyone's Dreams For The New Year Come True...! ! !

Today is Day 43 IF for me...!

I've been using hand weights and a medium resistance band. I sewed my FitBit to an elastic / Velcro strap to wear on my ankle... I like it and so far it is doing what I need it to do which is to count all my steps...

Everyone stay focused on your plan and keep tracking your food...stay hydrated and be well.!

Hello Everyone,

My Way Of Eating (WOE) for the rest of this year & into 2021 will be to continue IF & work on " Low Carb-ing It " as best I can. I continue to weigh, measure & count my food as that way I know the exact amount I am consuming... I am upping my protein too... it keeps cravings at bay. One Meal A Day (OMAD) has taken on "A Place In My Line Up" as well as "Longer Fasts" .

Eating the larger meal during the middle of the day is great but does not always fit in with my schedule... but I still do that as I can... I am able to do longer fasts: 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 hour fasts seem to fit in easily. I will be extending times of fasts as I am able to... usually after fasting for so many hours, I say to myself "When do You want to eat? ", "Can You go a little longer.? " going a little longer works well, it helps extend the fast.

I have not had many signs of "Low Blood Sugar " since I started IF, even on a longer fast , not having those feelings of LBS has been a plus with IF and I am glad I haven't had those... Before IF LBS was causing me to reach for "just anything to eat" which was leading me "to make bad choices"...

Moving along on the IF Train...! Today is Day 37 IF for me...! 12.24.2020 has been one of my Lowest Carb Days... at 35 Grams...! I am making a mindful choice to limit my Carbs and it has been exciting, "To See How Low I Can Go"...! My Carbs are not perfect but I am more aware of my Carbs than ever before.

Looking forward to what 2021 may bring is encouraging to me... I am finally seeing the scales moving down after a long plateau and that is a big WHOOP...!

I appreciate all your posts and comments... Knowing You are there means a lot to me...!...Thank You...!
