How will we know when the challenge ends? I didn't begin mine on the first of the month. Also, when it begins again, I would love to stay as a team leader! It is awesome!

Hello Everyone,
I do have a question for anyone who can answer this for me. As I was browsing the site I came across The Diabetes Weight-Loss Challenge. I believe when I rejoined last week or so I joined the team 50+ who have 50 to 99 to loose. I chose that group because I am over 50. However on my sign in profile I have down for my goal to loose is 42 pounds. I figured once I got that far then I would set another goal down further which would then put me over the 50 pounds. The BIG question is can you be on 2 teams at one time? If not, how do you change? I really feel I need some support and help in the Diabetes Weight-Loss if I can get it. My A1C is not good. I need more food ideas.
Thanks to all who respond!! emoticon emoticon

Yes, you'll get daily emails for the challenge. If you go to the main team page, at the top is a link to click to see the challenge details. There you can see the calendar with each day's task.

Hope that helps,

You might want to start a new thread to get suggestions about that from other members, because they will be able to share what has worked for them. This thread is really for technical questions about how the challenge works.

Hope that helps,

I would ask your doctor for a referral to see a registered dietitian who can create a meal plan specific to your needs. They should be able to do that for you.

It looks like you're in the diabetes program, which means you can access the diabetic meal plans in your nutrition tracker. Let me know if you have more questions.

This is a reply to Mary, Teaching1st (not sure if I got that right)

I'm new but I just wanted to comment on your comment. I was told a couple years ago I'm prediabetic, now I am diabetic and my PCP never told me what I need to do? Last time I was in I got more assertive and told pretty much that and that I have never been set up with a class. NOW! I am set up for a 8 wk class, an hour every wk and my insurance will cover most of it!

Hi Karen

That would probably be a good question for your doctor, since they know the most about your medical history.

I am still pre-diabetic, but very close to full blown diabetes. I have done this challenge twice to keep on track. My doctor is putting me on Metformin as a precaution and because I have retinopathy.
She has told me to only eat 45 carbs per meal and 20 per snack, just like SP. My question is, whenever I had in my exercise, my tracker increases just about everything except fiber. Should I follow the carbs on my tracker, or stick to the 45 and 20?

Hi Becky from another Becky,

My doctor has diagnosed me pre-diabetic last summer. I take 1 500 mg Metformin twice a day. My last A1C was done to 6.0 from 6.2 three months before. i am bad about checking my sugar because I used to have a doctor that told me I didn't have to unless I felt bad but the PCP I have now wants it done at least once a day. This next week I plan on doing better about tracking my sugars.

I am doing well so far with tracking my food and fitness. The main issue is getting myself out of bad eating habits. I like healthy food but that's not always convenient. I'm losing but I'd like to get my AIC down. It was 8.9 a few months ago.

I am fit and healthy. I make time for myself because I'm worthy of being my top priority.

Not necessarily, but a lot of people with diabetes have other medical conditions (like high blood pressure) that require them to watch their sodium intake.

Yes, you will get daily emails giving you the details of the challenge for the day. We do offer diabetic meal plans but not pre-diabetic plans.

Last month my lab work showed that I was 'pre-pre-diabetic!' At least, that's what my doctor said. When I asked for guidelines she said to 'watch my sugars and carbs.' But there was no real info. I have printed off your carb chart but have no real idea of what to do. I just rejoined Weight Watchers and hope that will help me to get to a better place health wise. It's not like I don't know what to do to lose weight----but I've let myself get back into bad habits. This challenge might be what I need. I am assuming from what I've read here that I will get daily emails and instructions on what to do for the challenge for that day? Is there a 'diabetic food plan' for pre-diabetics? I looked where my nutrition info is and I hate to use both this site and WW....it takes so long to log everything!!

Thanks for your support Becky! I am able to control my sugar levels with the carb counting, walking,& 1 metformin 500 at or after supper. So I think playing the doctor card might work! Never thought of that before. Thanks again!

Many of my clients experience what you are sharing about family/friends.

I am sure others will share possible solutions on how to handle these "food pushers and saboteurs".

One idea is to "play the doctor card"---my doctor is closely monitoring my health and has me on a structured medication and eating plan. ---- This usually shuts them down.

Other ideas spark-members?

Becky

Hi Becky,

Thanks for your reply! What you say makes a lot of sense. I find sometimes others find me a party pooper at events as I am not trying to sample all these carbs at parties. I am not much of a drinker either... If I just let loose I could eat tons of carbs like I used to do in the old days but then my blood sugar #'s are not good. I have one family member especially who nags me into trying carbohydrate rich foods & she is diabetic herself...Not sure how to handle the holiday party season as there will be lots of family events.

Dear JENNIFLOWER--
Yes, you will find support for your carbohydrate counting lifestyle here at Sparkpeople. I am glad that you have had conversations with your doctor to determine the eating plan that best meets your health care needs. I am glad you have determined action steps to implement in your life to help you achieve your goals.

As a Registered Dietitian and Health Coach, I come in contact with people with diabetes who are very much utilizing a carbohydrate counting plan. I have contact with people with diabetes who also can increase insulin for those times when a higher carb meal may be consumed. I see this with insulin pump users too. And of course I have contact with people with diabetes who are less structured with their eating plan and less ready to accept the diet and lifestyle change needed for optimal care.

Everyone is different. Everyone has different needs. Everyone is at a different place regarding their readiness to change. And everyone is at a different phase regarding how rapidly the change occurs.

It appears that you have determined the lifestyle changes you want to make to improve your health. Just because others are at a different place in the process should not impact the choices you have decided are best for you.

I hope you find Sparkpeople to be a supportive and encouraging place to come.

I am new to this challenge on Day 2. I limit my carbs to 20-45 grams of carbs per meal as per my doctor's orders but I find very few people I know who carb count. Instead I just see people take extra insulin or other meds & just eat whatever they want. Is carb counting not popular or just not common or perhaps I am just living in a society where eating to excess is common place. Will I find support for my carb counting lifestyle here. I used to weigh 193 and now weigh 149. My goal weight is 127. Thanks!

Our meal plans were created by registered dietitians and meet the basic dietary guidelines for people with type 2 diabetes (50% carbohydrates, 20% protein, 30% fat). The diabetes meal plans also limit carbohydrates at each meal and snack to meet basic carbohydrate-counting guidelines. So it sounds like your recommended range is correct.

Hope that helps,

Coach Jen

I am confused about the amount of carbohydrates I should be eating. On my nutrition tracker the graph shows a goal of 50% but my daughter's graph shows the same percent and she doesn't have diabetes. What should my goal be?

That's up to you. If you feel like you've missed enough time that you'd be better to start over, it's fine to do that.

I started this about 3 weeks ago, but have been offline because I've been sick. Should I leave challenge and start over? Continue from where I was? I'm not sure of the best way to handle this. Thanks

You should get daily emails with the challenge info. If not, there is a link to the challenge page on the top of our Team page.

Thanks!

I looked at your challenge page for yesterday, and I was able to check the box for reading the article and you got 5 points without a problem. What browser are you using? Perhaps if you try a different one, that will help.

It was for yesterday and the day before. I even took a screen shot this morning when it said I checked in so if it happened tomorrow I had proof. I will tell you when I was setting up my spark page I kept taking the check mark out of the offline choice and it kept going back in as my daughter was trying to friend me. I appreciate your assistance.

When you go to the challenge day, there is a blue button to click that says "I completed today" (or something like that). You need to click that button for the program to know you did it.

Why do I keep getting emails that tell me I did not check in every day? It is upsetting when you read the article and participate to be told you did not check in. I even had 2 posts yesterday one complaining about this. I left spark people once before because of this same type of thing. It is frustrating.

May your day be filled with sunshine & smiles, laughter, love & cheer!
