Spotty was put down just a few days before the lock-down started. I could see what was coming re the lock-down, and I could also see that she was slipping downhill. I felt it best to 'do it now' rather than wait a couple weeks, which is likely all it would have been. She had also started limping quite a bit. I am at ease with it. I guess my years of doing terminal cares for people makes it easier to come to, (what I consider) the right decision for the circumstances.

The 'rain' has been mostly sporadic and only very brief showers. When I went to dig a grave for Spotty Friday before last, the very top of the soil was bone dry and powdery. I couldn't manage more than a few inches tho' because it then got to be very hard and was causing chest pain/tightness so I gave up and my neighbour finished it - and HE had great difficulty too. He was stunned how dry the ground was - right to the bottom of the hole. Tomorrow I think I will be unraveling my garden hose and watering my feijoa trees for quite some time. The fruit will need it to grow big(ger) and juicy. Mine are late ripeners, fortunately.

If there is a food bank they might know - they may even do it themselves. Up here my Medical Centre (which has 6 clinics) collect each year to distribute. We have Homebuilders which does it and the Churches also have a collection. I THINK that the collections are combined and distributed through the same agency.

I am thinking of putting on some of the Community Facebook pages I belong to a suggestion that those who can afford it to start a collection taking advantage of the very good specials as and when they come up.

I really like the HRV at night. It pulls the cool air out of the ceiling and I feel that cooler air coming down on me in bed :-) I haven't had the Fan on AT ALL at night this year. Normally I would have. Mind you, there are still a couple normally hotter months to come.

I started that collection for disadvantaged kids yesterday. I bought 2x bucket/spade/dump truck sets. This is one of them:

I know - January IS almost over. I've already started looking at buying Xmas Pressies ... not so much for my family, but buying things at big knock-down prices, and suitable for a variety of ages to go out to those less fortunate at Xmas time. I am also considering starting a 'long shelf-life' collection of food for Xmas time for them, too, because leaving it until Xmas time makes it expensive at that time of year. My daughter did the Xmas pressie thing last year and she had a wardrobe full of some really nice brand new things she collected from on-line sales over the year. I couldn't afford it last year because of the damage to the house I had to pay for.

I've been very intrigued with my HRV system ... apart from the cooling effect in the evening, I have been gobsmacked at the temperature in the ceiling. Today it got to 60C and most days it has been in the upper 50's.

I'm planning on being able to see better this year. I had a check on the Greenlane Hospital Eye Clinic and have been approved for Cataract Surgery. I gather odds are they will only do one, because then I will be classed as being able to see too well, and will have to pay to get the other done (if it still bothers me)

My son and son-in-law are coming back from Vancouver BC in Feb. for a 2 week holiday, however given than Myke's mother lives in Nelson and I am North Auckland, I will see them but not 2 week's worth, because they will also be wanting to catch up with some friends. However, I have something over all of them .... I have been storing a lot of their stuff which they want to go through to see what they want to send back to Canada, or what will be sold/given away.

I hope you guys haven't been choking too much from the smoke from Australia. That is terrible what is happening over there.

Kris

After a comment from a SparkFriend last night, I looked on my mobile and hunted down a voice activated direction finder. It had very clear instructions with plenty of warning. I was still packing myself once I got over the harbour bridge, tho' LOL! I actually got down there 1155 for noon. Only thing was, all the others were late LOL.... the Birthday Boy, his partner and my sister were about an hour late. There was a holdup because there were a lot of phone calls to bank, real estate etc. re a property they are buying that goes unconditional tomorrow.

Anyway, the lunch was beautiful. I had Crispy Duck on a bed of mashed mustard infused mashed potato and green beans plus jus yummmm. My brother went in front, taking us back to my sister's in Ranui (West Auckland) and then after he led me back to where I could easily get on the Northern Motorway without being in all the traffic, then he double backed to his place. I really appreciated that because I have big anxiety moments in areas I don't know. I got back home at 7p.m.

Tomorrow I am going to my brother's 70th birthday lunch. It is in New Lynn, and the 'easiest' way for me to get there is over the Harbour Bridge. I am very uncomfortable with the idea because I haven't been in the New Lynn Area for about 30 years, and have never driven over the harbour bridge apart to go to Auckland Hospital, Greenlane Hospital, Remuera or the airport. NEVER to go on the North Western Motorway. I'm a little worried, given both my eyes need cataract surgery, so it makes reading signs a bit harder (altho' it appears I am fine to drive) I just hope that I get there and back in one piece.

I've had heaps of them. This will explain it. The normal membership is full at the moment but you can elect to pay $38 for the Silver membership (which I am in because my power is with them also, so I don't have to pay for that.)
www.blackbox.kiwi/

Before I joined Black Box Power (which is a lot cheaper than the crowd I was with) (I had received about 1 per year over the 3 yr period, but when I joined lack Box Power they put you into a different class and you are guaranteed at least 1 per year. For me, the first 2 years I was guaranteed 4 per year.

It's a marketing thing sending out samples and full -sized items as well, for people to try. You have to fill in a Questionnaire to keep getting more. They ask what you thought of them, if you had seen them in supermarkets, if you would buy it again, etc. etc. One year they sent me a sensitive teeth toothpaste (which is good for me because I use Sensodyne) and a charcoal toothbrush.I absolutely LOVE the toothbrush and won't go back to the normal ones. They are softer and the bristles are much finer so get between my teeth much more easily. I put my sister on to them and she feels exactly the same as me about them LOL! The following year they sent me a different brand of sensitive teeth toothpaste LOL! I've had a variety of bikkies, a few herbal teas (which I drink) breads, dog food, cat food, liquid handwash, shampoos, hair conditioner, a full sized bottle of Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water, Ghiotti Tagliatelle Egg Pasta, Jordan's Low Sugar Granola (which is very nice) Ghiotti, a variety of sugar-free softdrinks and various healthier option juices,
Italian Cheese Bites (which is VERY moorish) and the list goes on and on and on LOL!

This is the one I got in April.

The one I just got has a lot less than they normally have, but I'm not complaining. It is FREE and most of the stuff I use, or I can give it to my family re the alcohol and gluten free stuff.

No rain today. I picked another courgette today that will do 2 meals and picked the silverbeet to cook up for 2 meals also. I usually cook 3-4 day's worth of veggies at a time, but ensure that I don't eat exactly the same on those 4 days.

I got my follow-up to my MRI, today. It's 18th December.

I hope the MRI went well, too, but I guess I will find out in due course.

I picked my first courgette of the season, tonight. I only planted them as little seedlings, 3 1/2 weeks ago. There are a heap on the 2 plants. I should be picking/freezing them within the week. I will be picking silverbeet tomorrow to cook up, too. There is plenty there for 2x good sized serves, and that only got planted at the same time as the courgettes.

Yeh :-) The rain stopped about 5p.m. At least I won't have to water the fruit trees for quite some time LOL!

Tomorrow I go down to North Shore Hospital to have my Breast MRI. My sister had one on her toe at the same hospital, today. It has been getting treated for a few months now and hasn't healed, and at times they thought they might have to amputate, however with the state of her legs (very swollen and tight with excessive fluid) they are rather loathe. The checked her for myeloma, but hasn't got it, thank goodness. They are thinking it COULD be caused by blood clots in her torso, so is getting checked for that, too. She has had a very low haemoglobin level and before she came out of hospital a week or two ago, they gave her an infusion to help. The next step is she is gaving a gastroscopy and endoscopy to see if there is anything going on there causing a long term (about a year) lower haemoglobin.

We had a little bit of heavy rain for about 10 minutes/1/4 hr, late last night, altho' just down the road a couple k's and into town seemed to have had a considerable amount more, and more wind. Enough to flood the road in numerous places and fell a tree over the road. This afternoon there were 2 loud claps of thunder and quite a bit of fairly heavy rain since then - almost continuously for the last 2-3 hours.

It rained a LITTLE bit overnight. I got woken at 3a.m. by the power going off. Suddenly it was hard to breathe because there was no air being pushed through my CPAP machine LOL! It was only off for a few minutes. Just a little while ago there has been thunder rumbling around and we've had about 10 minutes of semi-heavy rain. I daresay there will be a little more of the same overnight. At least it means I won't have to water my veggies for at least 2 more days.

Unfortunately, no, no rain. Well, we DID have very little rain during the night. I saw some water in the gutter of the right-of-way next to me, but everything else was bone dry. With the amount there, it could just have easily been the old lady peeing there, rather than walking over the reserve to pee in the sea LOL! I have had Hazards alerts come in on my Mobile warning of periods of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms, for the next couple days, but I've had quite a few of these over the last few months and we have had diddly squat. If it hasn't rained tomorrow, I will have to go and water the veggies ... they're in containers so need watering more than if they were in the ground.

AWESOME, Jacquie emoticon

It looks like we MIGHT be going to get some rain tonight. Hopefully, anyway. The woman 2 doors down is getting a load of water pumped into her water tank as I speak. Mine should be nearly full. I'd be surprised if it wasn't. I have 2x 4,000 gallon tanks and quite a large roof catchment area, plus it's only me living here and I'm frugal with water, however I have watered my Feijoas, and banana a couple times lately, but that was only about 40 minutes total.

The last rain in my village was 14th October, just over 3 weeks, and we never really had that much then, altho' it did rain heavily for a couple hours ... and then nothing. There has been a fair bit of wind at times adding to the drying of the ground. I noticed today that leaves were falling off the Feijoa Trees and I haven't seen that before. Just as well I decided to water them.

I got invited to my brother's 70th Birthday lunch at a nice Restaurant in West Auckland. He doesn't know about it, other than my sister is the only one invited. His partner told my sister that they would show me which exit to take on the North Western Motorway. When they upgraded it they made the signposts VERY confusing and when I contacted NZTA and Auckland Transport the VERY STUPID PEOPLE told me that I SHOULD KNOW WHERE I AM GOING so they shouldn't NEED to indicate how to get to the Northern Motorway from the North/Western. Even some of the locals have commented on the very poor signage, and they KNOW where they are going. I'm fine going down.

Enjoy your trip down to Wellington with your family. My Mother and Stepfather Lived to 97 and 8 months and 97 and 4 months respectively, and Altho' the last 3 years they were in care, and even tho' they had daily caregivers go in at the end, I used to do the bulk of the care for them. I would go up 35k's away) 1 or 2 times a week, depending on their needs. Mum was the last to go - she died at the end of May. It's really nice that you are able to help take care of them when you can. Unfortunately, my brothers couldn't be stuffed to do anything, and toward the end one brother couldn't even be bothered acknowledging her birthday, Xmas or Mother's Day. I will always remember the pained/hurt look on her face on Mother's Day, 3 weeks before she died, and after she became critical, asking what she had done to them, and why wouldn't they even phone the hospital and leave a message. I just didn't know what to say. Even now, just thinking about it I have tears in my eyes. NOBODY should have to suffer that from their adult children.

Hi Everyone. Yes still getting a few fireworks here tonight. Guess they will keep happening as it suits people different nights!

We have had no rain for almost two weeks and the ground is like dust. Too early in the season for this! (in the Waikato)
Travelling south to visit parents and eldest in Wellington tomorrow until Tuesday so not sure how much time I'll get o here. I have to do alot of support and care for my parents as they are 89 and 90 and my brother and his wife spend a lot of time dong it so I go and give them a break living in with my parents. Its my youngest grandson birthday on Friday as well.

I have just planted a lot of Azaleas over the last couple of days so the rain has been welcome for them and also a few veg plants.....have had to use the hose a couple of times for the veg plants though....
Trust your Feijoas and bananas will be ok Kris

There weren't many fireworks around here last night. Every time a few went off I would get up to go and have a look, but by that time they had stopped LOL!

You guys are lucky getting rain down there. We haven't had any for quite some time and the ground is very dry. I have taken to watering my feijoas and banana, because of it.

Hy Lyn. Settled in nicely in Invercargill. Joined Waverley Bowling Club which is 2 blocks away so just a short walk. They have both indoor and outdoor so with all the rain recently I have been mainly indoors. Now that the weather is on the improve I should get more golf in also. I will be able to meet for a chat on my way back from Nelson early Decmber so will let you know closer to the date.

Hi J. Lovely day in the deep south today after rain yesterday. Maybe summer will visit after all. My son's cat - usually very standoffish - has been finding my lap a safe haven when the fireworks start. Hopefully that's an end to the bangers now.
