Went to my doctor yesterday. He put me on muscle relaxers. BIG DEAL. Although, I don't know what I want really just to feel better. I don't want to be on pain pills or epidurals or surgery...whats left?

Yes, extreme pain! I've had 2 spinal fusions and my surgeon says I need another one. Well, let me think about that . . . I don't think so! emoticon

Here is hoping that PT helps or gets you sent on to MRI quickly.

I start PT next Tuesday. Doctor thinks my upper mid back pain is caused from the 4 bulging disc in the lower back but will have to go through the PT before he could order an MRI. Been working outside and cleaning house all day and my back is killing me. Oh well, we will see.

I was told orthetics many years ago. But also the insurance not paying, so when needing new ones I didn't kn ow what to do. I went in and stepped on the machine at the WalMart store by the medicine counter. It checked my feet and told me what size to get in the inserts. They only costed about $60 for the pair, so dedcided to try them. They are doing just as well as the ones from the doctor without the big cost. Just a thought for those that want to try it.

I have an excercise book given to me by the doctor to help me avoid surgery. They are simple and easy to do. It has helped and I only have pain once in awhile that I can live with.

I was also given strict instructions on how to start wearing the inserts. No more than 15 minutes walking per day and gradually increase to 3 hours. If no problems then I could wear them all day. And to stop immediately if I got any red spots or blisters on my feet and bring them back in for adjustment.

If you haven't been exercising including walking much with back problems you might not want to start out with 30 minutes unless you are used to doing that. 10 minutes once a day for the first three or four days until you see if it is going to cause pain. If everything is okay start increasing by 5 minutes for another 3 or 4 days. If your back pain is getting worse back off again by 5 minutes. All exercise with back problems needs to build up VERY slowly because if your back flairs up it can put you back worse than you started out.
SF

PS - I think if your doctor recommends or prescribes it, the cost of orthotic foot inserts should be covered by health insurance. But no one is listening to me!

Well thr foot doctor recommended the foot insert. As it stands now NO my insurance doesnt cover it :((... I guess i have no choice if it might help me relieve some of the pain.

I went for a walk today. Walked for 30 mins roughly a mile and already myy back and hips hurt. Not sure if the inserts will help to pay the 400 bucks.

So what did the foot guy suggest? I have a friend that ended up getting the shoes on one foot built up to equalize her leg length and she said it has worked wonders. I had custom orthotics made for my feet and has helped tremendously. They had to adjust my left insert because of heel spurs. It has helped me a lot in getting around (didn't get rid of it but bearable now) and it wasn't cheap. Unfortunately most of these do not go through insurance so it is all out of pocket. The thing that amazed me was as soon as I started wearing the new shoes with orthotics I stood up much straighter because I had a better foundation to stand on.
SF

PS - Also these shoes are not pretty. I have a choice of one style in two colors (black and clay) but I wear them because I can walk in them!

I had been diagnosed with scoliosis when I was a kid. I am now in my my 30's and have been told it has changed to moderate. The pain has increased so I went to my primary and was sent for xrays. They saw that i also have a tilted pelvis and one leg longer than the other.. so my doctor next sent me to the foot doctor to see if shoe inserts would help a lil. Well i found out i have heel spurs and something else with my arches. So now i understand where all the pain is coming from. How the heck do i stay motivated?? What exercisers can i do? Just wish i wasnt doing this alone. HELP PLEASE!!

I'm glad you are able to "rant" here because we all know what you are dealing with. People start to look at you like you are whining or making things up. And just to say you are overweight is no help at all.

I agree with SCHOOLCOOK2. It is critical that you find a doctor that you trust and can work with because it can be a long road figuring out what is wrong and the best thing to do.

That said there are some small things you can begin to work on to improve your situation. One of the issues that makes back problems worse is a weak core (abdominal muscles) so you might want to look up some core strengthening exercises and videos. If you check to the right of the SparkTeam page you should be able to see the Team Stream with all the blogs scrolling. Right below that there is a See All the Team and if you click on the Links heading you will see 3 pages of good articles and some videos for Back Problems. One is Concentrate On Your Core and Exercising with Lower Back Pain. The big thing is not to overdo anything and build up very slowly.

I found that laying flat on my back on the floor with my knees bent relieved my pain greatly before I had back surgery. But everyone is different.
Hopefully, you will be able to find something that helps.

I think it is good you are changing doctors. Mine was really good and they took x-rays and then an MRI to see for sure what could be causing it. They did an epidual in my spine about 5 years ago and told me to get off the cement. So I retired and did well till a few months ago. When it started bad again I went in and talked to her and they did the x-rays and MRI again the 1st of April. Now will see the back doctor on the 30th. Doesn't sound like your doctor has very good bed side manners.

I had an MRI done the start of April but can't get into the back Doctor till April 30th. I will be so glad when it gets here to see what they will do. The MRI showed I have a degenerative spine and that the nerves are being pinched at the bottom, so that is why the pain in my back and right leg. I am still trying to get on the treadmill every day for at least 10 to 15 minutes a day. Going in to help at school at least 2 days a week. I will not let this get me down. The nights are the worst. I lay down and think its good but soon pain starts up and I toss around alot. About 5 years ago they did an epidual in my spine and it sure helped, so wonder if that is what they will do again. A week and a half to go and then we will find out. Will post whenI know more. emoticon

Hello, I am new to the team. I have had back pain for over 4 years now which stemmed from an injury while playing basketball in college at 18 years old. I had an initial surgery 4 years ago to remove bone spurs from my L4-L5 lumbar region (due to a bulging disc). The surgery was the least invasive and alleviated the back pain and sciatica. Now 2 1/2 years later the pain is back - the sciatica is back -- and the disc is almost gone (almost bone on bone). My spinal surgeon says to strengthen my core - walk (no more jogging); and start a yoga or water aerobics class. I am bummed because I love to jog --- but I am working on my walking program... and on my core.

Hi, I am new here, but my back pain is definitely not new. I have stenosis of the spine with osteoarthritis throughout my body. I had two replacements a hip and knee. The neurosurgeon wants to do surgery on my spine, but have not done it. However, pain and weakness of my lower body are inching me closer and closer.

I have recently put extra weight onto my already weighty body. My intention is to work at the weight and do what I can with exercise.

I exercise at least four times a week. Now that it is summer, I do more water aerobics and swimming then usual. I do need to get back to machines.

What I need now is support and more support. This looks like a good site with folks that understand 'pain'.

So with open heart I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

Sincerely,
Georgeann

Georgeann

I'm thinking so long as I stay active, and do my daily back exercises, sit less, especially on the couch and in the car, I will heal faster and put my back in less jeopardy. I've lost at least 5 pounds, leaving at least 15 to go and I already feel better. Everyday I want to do better than the day before. I'm on my way. I am tracking my food daily now and need to get that activity happening. Tomorrow is a new day. Thanks for the tips.

That's the biggest dilemma of bad backs. You need to exercise to better your fitness and lose weight but when you exercise you run the risk of hurting your back. And the fact that you aren't in shape means that exercise is going to hurt some - so what is "good" pain and what is "bad" pain. I find that the longer I stay in bed or inactive, the stiffer and more painful I am. Just getting up and walking (even if it is hobbling at first!) I will start to feel better. However, to walk 2 miles when I haven't been doing it is just plain stupid. So I take something like the SparkPeople's Walking Guide - Walk off the Weight to Get Fit and Healthy

https://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/spar
kwalking.asp

This has some great articles on how to walk properly and a Beginner's Walking Program. The first two weeks you only walk for 15 minutes total 3 or 4 times a week, and gradually increase from there. In the case of bad backs you might need to slow that down a little more (maybe taking 15 to 18 weeks instead of the 12 weeks listed. If you start hurting you may have to back off in your time spent walking and the numbers of times for week. My pain often doesn't start till a couple of hours after I do something so you'll just have to listen to your body.

I like Coach Nichole's videos. She almost always gives instructions for people with bad backs to do alternate versions and on one of the videos she has a person there demonstrating the easier versions.

HTH.

Thank you for the links to exercise with back pain. I look forward to checking them out. I reinjured a slipped disc, I think just from riding in a car (long distance two weekends in a row). Anyway, I know I have to lose 10 - 15 lbs to be in a range that does not jeopardize my disc problem. If I cannot walk, what can I do? How can you lose weight if you cannot be active? Anything I do seems to hurt my back. I do not want the steroid shots but maybe is the only way to stay employed. I hate complaining but since that is what this team is about, then you know it isn't complaining but only looking for suggestions. I don't think I am near as bad as those I've read of on this site, but I know my back is worse with time. 2 protruding discs, L4, L5 and one on way S1, not to mention deteriorating discs from mid thorasic down where only stiffness is noticed. Petrified it will start to spasm again if I push it. Sign me: grateful for this team.

Exercising can be tough. Everything you read says walking is best for backs. Make sure you have good shoes and go no more than 10 minutes at first. People with back trouble need to build up much slower than others. So you may only increase a few minutes each week.

If you can't walk you may have to find other methods like recumbent bikes. There is another thing I've heard of but never seen is an arm cycle. Here is an example...

I have chronic back pain due to Degenerative Disc Disesase caused by forceps delivery when I was born. My neck and low back is shot so I am limited in how much I can do as far as exercise and standing. I have taken pain pills, no help just kept me groggy, and aquatic therapy which made me hurt worse than before I started. So I am at a loss on what to do now I am hoping if I lose some weight it will not be as bad (pain), I know when I was pregnant with my 3yr old son I had no pain I don't know if it was because of the hormones or what. It probably did not help my back when they spinal block on my first c-section (16 yrs ago) hit a nerve in my back because I was having contractions every 2 minutes lasting for 1 1/2 minutes, so I had a contraction right when he put the needle in. ( emergency c-section).

Hi Colleen. I just read your story and it is really weird how our backs are similar. I started with two herniated disc(L5, S1). I am a housewife. I have had the steroid injections, did PT ( which only made my back hurt worse)and after the exercises they would hook me up to a TENS Machine for about 15 minutes or so, I had nerve blocks. And now my herniated disc have now turned to 1 degenarative and the other not quite bulging. They told me that they did not believe surgery is for me. Which I am not in any hurry to have by the way. I have been dealing with my pain for almost six years. I take pain pills, muscle relaxers, Inflamation pills and alot more pills that is supposed to work with the above mentioned. I agree the doctors, techs, nurses and others do not know what we go through each day. I can go to our nearest small town which is round trip 15 minutes and by the time I get home I am hurting. I bought myself a small portable TENS Machine. It helps some when I can wear it. But I can't wear it when I sweat as the electrodes slide and give me a shock. My PT set the settings on it for me. You should see another dr if you feel that you are not getting answers and information you need. Also my PT gave me sheets with the exercises she wanted me to do at home and made sure I could do them before I left. I did them every day for the amount and time she had stated. But they only made my back hurt worse. My family dr referred me to a neurologist for my back I went recieved shots and meds. Then I got referred to a pain clinic, but they told me the same thing as all of the other specialist told me. I had already seen a few and all said the same thing lose weight. I would love to but when you can only stand for about 10 minutes before you start hurting and then I am on a heating pad for a while. My house is a mess (6 years add up)it is only my husband and I. He helps where he can but he is in a wheel chair and has limited access to some places in our home. I hope you are doing better when you get this. I just wanted to let you know that there is people who do understand your pain. and the limitations it can cause. Have good day.

Hi, I'm new to this group. Just feeling frustrated lately. A lot of my friends are jogging and I struggle just to walk. Did 40 minutes today, limping mostly, and the pain was quite bad. I have L5, S1 herniations, inflamed SI joints and an arthritic right hip from an injury 25 years ago. Some days are better than others, and I use the good days to the utmost. Doing my best, plugging along, but I really wish some days I could be training for a 10k, like so many seem to be doing this spring.

Probably a laminectomy which is what I had. Your sciatica sounds much worse than mine. Surgery helped me a lot but I only had one segment involved. People sometimes have multiple segments and it gets a lot harder to surgically correct. It took me a long time after surgery to "trust" my back again. It was about a year before I stopped hesitating before trying something in case it hurt my back.

All the best and please keep us updated on how things go.

What sort of surgery are they going to do? Your pain certainly sounds like sciatica. I thought my pain was from my right hip but they said my hip was great (for my age - don't you hate when they say that!). It felt like a hot poker in my right hip. After the surgery to fuse my L4-L5 my hip doesn't hurt anymore. I will have a little bit of pain down my right calf if I sit in the same position for too long but it goes away as soon as I move.

Yes i'll be having surgery soon i had to postpone it twice. My pain is so severe it goes all the way down to my toes, hip hurts, some day i can not walk 10 ft w/o stopping to rest. i've result to a scooter chair for long distance walk. It appears to me to be the hips but all the md. i see is saying it is from my back. When i was living in Ct. 4yrs ago the drs there told me i'll probably need a hip replacement within 5 yrs. I just hope i have the correct surgery. I really don't want to have surgery the pain is so severe i can't p/p it much longer. Painkillers doesn't help, keep me awake til the wee hrs. I have many medical problem, and have had surgeries. sure hope you feel better soon.

It might be worth getting a physical therapist (a good one that is recommended in your area :)and have them check out your back when your back is hurting. You may be having muscle spasms that are aggravated by exercise and standing. My back aches if I stand for too long and if I walk a lot at work or shopping. However, I had surgery on my lower back and this pain is bearable (before surgery the pain was debilitating). I just treat it as a warning to rest for a while. If I push it I will get back spasms and they are NOT bearable.

Depending on the source of your pain, there may be some preventive stretches that you can do. Many people swear by Robin A McKenzie's Treat Your Own Back. However, before you do too many exercises you should check with a professional so you don't do yourself more damage.

It doesn't shoot down my legs. It is more of a constant pain in my lower back. It feels almost like cramping, but it is not. It stays there though. The leg pain is separate. It is on the outside of my legs, and it is dull pain just like from exercising. Both these stay and don't go away until I get to rest or add some heat to my back.

Hi COOKIES4MONSTER:
Could you describe your back and leg pain a little? If it is something that starts in your hip and shoots down your leg into your calf, gets worse until you sit or lay down, it could be sciatica. If it hurts a different way it could be other things.

I have a question for everyone, I work at a job that I have to walk around on cement quite a bit. I have good shoes, but I still have lower back pain and leg pain. I also started jogging this past week. I was wondering does anyone else experience this and what can I do to help make the pain less? Are there strecthes or natural remedies that anyone knows about? Thanks for all the help!

From what I could tell this is a narrowing of the spinal canal and is usually secondary to trauma (usually a fracture of the vertebrae)of some sort. As long as it is not progressing (filling in the spinal canal further) it shouldn't make your problem any worse. The danger is that any further trauma makes your nerves much more likely to have serious damage. This would be really a problem if the narrowing is in your neck area than in your lumbar area. This is a fairly unusual condition. Most people with pinched nerves have the pressure occurring outside the spinal canal where the nerves are exiting between the vertebrae (me for instance)because of instability or if the cartilage discs between the vertebrae begin to leak out material which presses on the nerves.

I would double check to make sure that the doctors didn't tell you that there was a specific condition that is causing the stenosis. Then you can get a better idea of medical versus surgical options that you might have.

Did you really mean sinostenosis or spinostenosis? It doesn't show up on web searches. There are a couple of articles on spino-stenosis. I just wanted to make sure I was commenting on the right condition...

I joined this team a couple months ago.My back pain is caused by osteoarthritis coupled with sinostenosis of the lower lumbar region. I have pain daily and manage it with Rx strength Ibuprophen as well as stretching and specific core exercises mixed with walking to lose weight. The pain is not really better but it is no worse since I am active. I wonder what else can be done that is not a medicaton or surgery.

I have seen the TENS (nerve stimulation unit) help tremendously in one patient. They don't help everyone, but when they do they are a god send. This lady was elderly and could not take pain medication, because of the side effects. She was dying due to the constant agonzing pain, not eating and losing weight very fast and dangerously. She didn't need to lose weight, so this was not good for her. She was 99 years old. The unit moved the pain from a 10/10 to a 3/10. She was able to live the rest of her life without pain. But like you said it doesn't always work, but I would try it if other treatments don't work.

WOW - it sounds like I was reading a script about my life! I'm also in constant pain these days (I was laid off in April and now it seems like the pain has gotten even worse - where I don't think I'll be able to return to work and I don't have insurance where I'm able to get medical treatment/meds) I have trouble just getting out of bed let alone trying to take a shower and doing daily chores without yelping out in pain. My husband works (so, that's when I get most of my crying done) Not because I feel sorry for myself..tears from pain and fustration that I can't get things done during the day. I hate when I drop something and I can't pick it up - it kills me when he comes home from a long day at work from physically moving and lifting heavy things - then he comes in the door and has to pick-up whatever I might have accidently dropped throughout the day. He has always been helpful around the house, but now my pain is so bad on most days...he works all day and then comes home to cook and clean. I'm not obese, but I have gained almost 40lbs since the pain has gotten worse. ((tears)) I'm just plain tired!

Blessings!

Have you tried aquatic physical therapy? I was in a bad car accident and had a compressed fracture of L2. The back doctor let me try to use weight machines. I teach and when I returned to work in the Fall, lifting weights was giving me back spasms. So the back doctor sent me to an aquatic physical therapist. She gave me a weight lifting routine that I do in the pool. The water helps support the back so the routine works primarily the arms and legs, not the core. I also started to take private Pilates classes. This has increased my ranage of motion and the time I can be in a car without pain. You might want to try one or both of those. If I had to start with one of them, the Pilates class was where I saw the most improvement in pain.

I have back pain, and I hate it.

My back pain is in one area in my back. Right between my shoulder blades about 3-4 inches down from my neck. It stays in one area, it seems to affect only a very small area of my back-like I said right between my shoulder blades.

I wake up in agaony every morning and have to sit up for almost 20-30 minutes before it eases up. Then for the rest of the day, I'm fine. Then bam at night it comes back.

When the weather changes or we are heading in for a cold snap or colder weather or its going to rain for several days OH MY.

Dr won't give me vicoden or anything stronger than arthritis advid for it (would only take it when I need it) because my pain isn't raditiating. He's only done xrays on it and doesn't think it's severe enough to warrant and MRI (I think he thinks I'm to fat for one is the real reason.)

Some nights (2-3 times a week) the pain is so bad I'm in tears. I have an extremely high pain tolerance and for me to be whimpering, near tears or in tears from pain-that's pretty bad.

One of the reasons I over eat so much is because I'm in daily pain, I try to workout but I can't make it more than 10-15 minutes. Not because I'm out of breath (I am and if it was just that I could work through it...) but because after 10-15 minutes my back is screaming at me to stop and my back is in agony for the next hour.

I have trouble doing yoga-even though it helps a lot-because my fat @ss has trouble getting up and down off the floor. I would do it on our bedroom, but hubby lives there in bed (only comes out to eat dinner and do the dishes) because of his chronic pain issues and can't be out of bed more than 45 minutes at a time (almost always when we're eating dinner) so I rarely get the bedroom to myself to do yoga on our bed. And when he's in it-well, there's not room for me to do any of the moves.

So I feel like I've almost given up on my back pain.

I'm so sick of trying to tell my dr's about my back pain and have them looking back at me like I'm some kind of crazy nut job.

To a dog your the king of the universe. To a cat your nothing more than the hired help.

If God had wanted me to touch my toes he would have put them up higher on my body.

Be careful going in search of adventure -- it's ridiculously easy to find.

I think we are all on this forum with some kind of back pain...Mine is from a bad car accident almost two years ago. I was definitely not at fault and am still in litigation with lawyers to settle the whole thing. The back pain and the resulting changes in my life are not going to be helped by a dollar amount. I am now only allowed to work four days a week so my lost wages are in that mix somewhere. I am hoping it will be settled before the two year mark in February. Right now, I am grateful that I have a hot tub. I am allergic to aspirin so there is so much pain medication I cannot take...The hot tub is my pain relief...that and my Pilates class.

Oops! I just realized that you have introduced yourself TRILLIANTOO! And it sounds like you have hit a rough spot. Loss of pets requires a grieving period just like losing a family member. It will take time like everything else and in the meantime don't expect too much of yourself.

We have had several people on this list mention retraining and going back to school options as they were recovering from back injuries, etc. I'm not sure what agencies you would have to contact to see what resources are available for pursuing those areas.

What are your interests? Is there anything you really enjoy doing that might be a service to others? (Don't be modest here!) At one point my sister was looking to be one of the "Help Desk" people at an 800 number as something she could do at home. Maybe in the meantime doing some volunteer work that could help fill out your resume.

Come on team - any ideas??

Hi I just joined and wondered if maybe I could get some help ...

I DEARLY need to make money, I have no income, haven't been able to qualify for disability, but need to find a way to consistently make income without having a nervous breakdown in the process.

I've been trying to start my own business but a lot of that is right-now work for money later (in theory) ... I still want to do that, but I need some money in the meantime.

And I want to make my back better, but the stuff my docs and PTs had me doing made me so much worse I wanted to die. I started getting better when I STOPPED seeing them.

I'm feeling really overwhelmed right now as I kind of had a date in mind for when I wanted to have solid income coming in and that date has moved up significantly .... and recently I lost my mentor, my cat, others I cared about - I'm a bit on emotional overwhelm too ... today was the first day I left the house since my cat died last week ...

I need to do something, and I don't know what.

Yeah, I know about the issue with the bladder control. I was told a while ago if I had any changes like that to tell them. I know they can do something once that is happening. I'm also getting some grinding and popping in there too. So there have been changes I have to report.
This is getting harder and harder to deal with. I have to take pain meds just to get up in the morning. Wait for them to "kick in", then I can eat something before they upset my stomach! What a life I've ended up with!

Thanks for the introduction WANNABEFIT_065!
The alarming thing in your post is the change in bladder control - this is an important danger sign. Make sure you let your doctor know because it should move you to the top of the list for diagnostics, etc.

Your post on housework reminds me of an e-mail I got the other day. I will see if I can post it on one of the other topics...

A little about me. I now have 3 bad discs in my lower back (L3 to the L5). They call it the Domino Effect. I had surgery on my L5 in '99 and the last 3-4 yrs have been super bad for me. Many jobs later and I'm on disability now. I have bad leg pain n my left leg making it hard to walk stairs, drive or just plain walk. My life is full of pain.
I take pain meds for my back and leg. It's not helping my leg much. I've noticed in the past 6 wks it has gotten worse. So another MRI is in my future when I visit my pain mgt dr next month. Something more has changed in there.
Also I'm having issues with my bladder now. That started with the increased leg and back pain 6 wks ago.
There are so many things I just can't do anymore! I can't vacuum, mop the floors, I have to scrub the shower one wall at a time! I can dust furniture though! And I do that often!
I do what I can, and what I can't the family helps me with. I've had to learn to let things go alittle. So what if the house gets a little dirty from time to time and so what if they don't do it as good as I did. At least it's getting done, somewhat. Right?

I'm thinking about banning all household chores involving any type of scrubbing. May have done myself in again today just by mopping and polishing the floors... then vacuuming... washing walls... OK maybe I over did it a bit. OUCH.

It really depends on what is doing the pinching. It could be a bulging disk, or an instability of one or more vertebral spaces or your back being out of alignment for other reasons (curvature of the spine). Some things will improve with what you are doing and others won't.

I would ask the doctor what is the cause of the pinching. If you don't understand the scientific word that comes out of her mouth - get her to write it down so you can read up on it. Or post it here. I'm willing to bet one or more of our team members will have a similar problem and will be able to share our experiences.
