We have lists at home; it's 2 columns and it follows as we walk through the store (e. g. produce first, etc.). We just update the file and then fill it in by hand. I imagine eventually we'll just do it on our phones.

Yes I agree...I just take down lists of what I need and do meal planning to refer back to. The meal planning for me is a big deal; so I don't come to a phase with no ideas- meal plan then shopping lists! I also photocopy the blank phase day planners...I use those every day and record everything! Times, weights, foods, etc.! Good luck!

It depends on what you want to do. I buy grocery list pads which hang on my refrigerator and I check things off. But for this, I took an hour and wrote it all out with paper and writing utensil. I too am a list person and that made my life much simpler. Now I kind of do things a little looser but I have the routine as well as the book and cookbook for food ideas.

If you tell me what you want to do, I'll see what I can come up with.

Fast note on cooking egg whites. I use cast iron pans and I spray them with a coconut oil spray. The amount of fat doesn't make a difference and my food doesn't stick.

Passover is going to be interesting (fortunately it's just me and Mr. j so no seder). I found matzoh made from spelt! It pays to live in what feels like the gluten-free capital of the universe, the Boston-Cambridge area. :)

Jes! ! You are so cool!

LISTS are great, I said somewhere before I photocopy things too, blank meal maps are so nice. Also, I CANNOT recommend making soups beforehand ENOUGH. Both phase one and phase two soups have been amazing so far, they make my day.

No, it's not easy, but the exciting thing? You notice change right away, I think for me that is why I like this "diet" so well, even though there is a lot of challenge.

You're analogy is excellent- a different way. But it's the contents in the bag that makes a difference as well. The bag (continuing with that analogy) will fit in the compartment so much better with the right materials in it. No more overpacking. I love your thinking....

Being prepared helps enormously. I am having trouble with caffeine. Actually, a diet coke fell in my mouth today. Before the diet, I had rules about a diet coke. Only one and only on days off. So here I am in the checkout with my pinapple for Monday and my celery for snacks and I think, OH! I just splurge a tiny bit and have a diet coke cuz it's sugar free! Best idea I thought I had all day! So I am LOVING a this diet coke, driving in my car, and BOOM, it hits me that I Am drinking CAFFEINE! Ha! So silly. Bad dandelion. i might alter my FMD a to include a small coffee in the morning...wavering...because after 28 days it is so lovely t slowly incorporate things back in your diet without NEEDING them. So we'll see. Coffee is the hardest thing to say goodbye to....

Okay! Off to lunch (OMG: lamb, kale and leek soup. DREAMY)
Byebye! Let's keep chatting here as it is inspirational.

I'm about your age, too, and I would say, yup, I think you get the idea, and, if you make a mistake or do something not quite right, I doubt the diet police will come and get you!! It's a learning curve...good luck!

Figured it out, thank you!

We have a big list now. And there's a big list for what to eat/day. My husband makes the salads so he's got the 411. E. g. kale every day, no carrots during Phase 2, that sort of thing.

I have little doubt that it'll be imperfect during the first week. That's okay. I feel it's important to get it going and to try.

It's kind of like - bear with me on this analogy - don't know how old everyone is here. I'm over 50, and I remember very well when carry on luggage either didn't have wheels or the strap was in the front and they would tip over ALL. THE. TIME.

Then somebody got the bright idea to turn that same luggage on its side and affix the strap in a different way, and now that's all you see. It's a fantastic design shift, but it's nearly the same piece of equipment. It's just turned differently.

Same thing here. We may be used to an omelet in the morning and then a sandwich at noon and a pasta dinner and then on the following day it's cereal in the AM, protein on a salad at lunch and a chicken dinner. But if we swap the lunches and we ditch the bread in the sandwich, we're pretty close to eating P1 and P2 without really breaking much of a sweat. It's not exactly correct, but it's pretty close to what happens, yes?

You mean from my post? Page 105? About porportions?
It starts talking about protien...4 oz meat, 6 oz fish, or 1/2 cup cooked legumes....in all phases...then Goes to grains...phase one: one cup cooked or about 1/4 cup crackers....phase 3 1/2 c cooked grains or 1/2 oz of crackers...

Maybe you can find it? Good luck!

Jespah, I'm assuming you mean from the original FMD book...

Page 150 is a chart of the week three meal map, phase 3
It is the last page of chapter 8, the page before chapter 9, Week Four: Give It Hell.
Hope that helps.

I was told on the facebook site that we are not suppose to use Pam. I do use it however to cook my eggs. I use organic chicken broth if I am "frying" mushrooms, onions, chicken etc... I just didn't know any other way to cook the eggs and not have them stick. I still lost weight.

Can we use Pam?

Also - can you just type a few words (it can be a phrase of maybe 5 words) from page 150? I have the Kindle edition and the paging is different, but I can run a search and find things that way.

Thank you. :)

I think I remember reading on her forum somewhere that the snacks in phase 2 are only half portions of meat, i.e. if you are supposed to have 6 oz per serving to lose 40 lbs, for the snack you would only have 3 oz.

Hi Jes!

Yes, if you are 40 or more it is 1 1/2 C per serving including the snacks on phase 1 and phase 2. Page 105 is the clearest and I actually photocopied that to remind myself!
The beans are different, she puts them under protein (look at that same page) and only 1/2 a cup. Remember phase specific VEGGIES a are UNLIMITED! So for example cucumbers are ok on any phase and you can eat oodles.

You don't have to follow the recipes. It is easier for some, remember you can substitute. I said the beef, kale, leek soup is a life saver but you could easily sub chicken. I used lamb.

6 oz. for each serving. But you got me a little confused as well, so, I tried to search this question out further and could find no specific answers. She never mentions (?) in the book hat I am aware of that snacks are a different portion in phase 2 so I believe all snakes are the same portion of meat. I guess that's where the recipes are nice? I made a great turkey bacon meatball. But deli meat works too! Any one wanna weigh in on this?

Hope this helps. I am on day two and the caffeine withdrawals have been worse than before. Clinging to herb tea...have fun!

So - hi - I'm trying to understand this.

1 1/2 c. fruit (phase 1). That's a snack? A portion? With every meal?

I read the book but I am just having issues making sense of it all. Want to start on Monday, to lose over 40 so what I am reading here that means 1 1/2 times the portions except for veg, which are double. But I'm not seeing the veg portions except for things like beans (which I believe are treated differently).

Really don't want to follow recipes. I don't eat beef or pork and need to try to work this around my husband's eating habits, and when we normally go food shopping, too.

Back of the book says, for Phase 1, 6 oz meat. Is that for each day, for each of the three meals for the two days (so a total of six 6 oz servings of meat?)?

Color me confused. Thank you, veterans. :)

Thanks for the information. Haylie is right about the original amount in book being too much food to eat.

I re posted link so anyone can click on and go straight to article instead of getting a list of articles to read.

Since Haylie wrote the book she has changed the portion size for those wanting to lose over 40 pounds. Now everyone who wants to lose more than 20 pounds eats 1 1/2 portion. She's discussed this in her blog. Here's a link to her post on the subject:http://hayliepomroy.com/eat-more-t

I remember Hayle's example in front of book that showed a person that needs to lose the least weight should consume one cup of chile. A person that has to lose the next level should consume 1.5 cups of chili. Person that has to lose 40 or more lbs, needs to consume 2 cups of chile. This example stuck with me since I need to lose more than 40 lbs and eating two cups of chile would be too much for me.

Facebook FM group has meal lists, charts, etc. that can be downloaded/printed out to use.

I am sorry you feel like a miserable husk of a woman. I like the replies I've seen so far, in this order:

1. Checking the portion amounts: Did you eat the amounts recommended for someone needed to lose less than 20 pounds.
2. Were you choosing foods that you've had allergies to in the past? Exp. I've been intolerant of citrus all my life. So lemons and limes are out, especially in phase 2.
3. Is a different medical problem rearing it's ugly head? Should you see a physician? Though I believe you're saying the hunger pangs went away after you ate again. Eating something else an hour later wouldn't take care of an allergy or intolerance.

It might help if you have an ulcer or little parasite that is particularly hungry.

About the reference to double-- The books now say 1.5 times the grain and fruit and protein for anyone who needed to lose more that 20 pounds.

And if you need to lose more than 40 pounds, you double only the veggies. And she says that is important to do.

I had similar problems when I went veggie. I never lost weight, but my tummy bloating, etc left. Probably due to me going potty several times daily. I could no longer do housework, swim, etc. My friend made two veggies dishes for us to eat for dinner the last day I was on the diet. I was starving, weak and bloated when I arrived home 20 minutes later and returned to eating protein. My friends on the diet complained of bloating, gas, etc. Then, dietitian told us we had to slowly introduce beans, etc into our diet so body does not rebel.

Are you eating the right amount at each meal? A person that needs to lose 20 lbs should eat one serving. Person that needs to lose 30 lbs needs to eat 1 1/2 servings. Person that needs to lose 50 or more lbs should eat 2 servings. I need to lose 50 lbs but never was able to eat 2 servings of anything on this diet.

Haylie Pomroy also has a website for the Fast Metabolism Diet here- http://hayliepomroy.com/
and they have a question and answer section. Maybe you can find something there or can ask about it there? Sorry I don't know how to make that an active link, just highlight it, copy, and paste it in your web browser.

Thank you for your reply berry4!

I made phase 3 breakfast and ate it but was starving an hour later, so I just said to heck with it and ate what I usually would - a kind protein bar, and sprouted toast with peanut butter. Feeling more normal now. Maybe I'm allergic to something I was eating? Honestly I felt like the worst times when I was pregnant (though I'm not now), which got me thinking maybe all that hormone production she talks about was just going gangbusters for me (in the worst possible way!)

I'm no pro at anything, but it certainly sounds like your body is missing either nutrition that it needs OR you have something physically wrong.

I personally would add in at least a tablespoon of coconut oil each day. And then if you are still this miserable, I would see a medical doctor to find out what is going on!

I am writing as a miserable husk of the woman I was 6 days ago before starting this diet.

As some background, I've been doing slow carb for 5 months - so no sugar, no grains, no fruit (except 1 day per week, you can eat whatever you want). I felt great and lost 20 lbs, a bit less than a lb per week, but wanted to speed it up for my final 20.

I followed the diet pefectly, and drank more water than recommended (I'm always thirsty on this diet). For some reason on every phase of this diet, at every meal, my stomach swells up instantly and I look 6 months pregnant. Phase 2 was really tough. I'm used to no carb, but no fat too! My body rebelled and was starving all the time. The night between phase 2 and phase 3 i woke up at 4 am STARVING, and tried to go back to sleep but visions of my body eating my muscles sent me to the kitchen for a phase 3 snack.

Then came the first day of phase 3 yesterday. Sweet Lord Jesus - hell on earth. Everything I ate gave me intense nausea, but I choked it down, the intense hunger pains would wane for a half hour or so, then return. i finally just went to bed at 2 pm and curled up in a ball. Well, a ball pathetically gagging down phase 3 food and water. Again last night I woke up - this time at 3am - starving, but I toughed it out and went back to sleep because I was so afraid I'd get nauseous again.

Oh, and the best part, for all this suffering I have lost exactly 0.6 lbs so far.

What is happening?
