Ladies, Ladies, ladies, you all are going about this the wrong way... I use a thick padded sleep mask which also has a built in sounds of ocean waves, forest sounds rain drops. the curtains are good ideas as are the tinted windows but when you add the sleep masks you don;t have to worry about the light coming in around the edges and you have as much access to your window viewing as you need on your awake hours. My mask cost about $35.00 and I have been using it for several years .

My partner and I have been on nights for almost 3 years and in the beginning we tried multiple things! We nailed blankets into the wall, cut plywood to the size of the window, and nailed black out curtains into the wall, among other things! We like to be able to let light in when we are not sleeping so what we have now is black out sheet (bought from fabric store) nailed into the wall on one side with a black out curtain on the rod. When it is light outside (and we are not sleeping) we can open up the side of the black out sheet that is not nailed in.

Also, taking melatonin helps me fall and stay asleep!

You can get it at Walmart, it costs around $15-20 a roll, it took two rolls for my windows (I only have 2) and I bought the static cling kind so its easy to remove if you ever decide to. Super easy to put up, the other kind is a little harder but not too bad. Just clean the window good. I have since put this tint in my kids rooms as well, it helps with the cooling in the summer and they tend to sleep better in the summer when its light out so late!

Thanks babycues for the idea. I've not thought of that one. I have room darkening blinds and black out panels. and a valance that blocks out the light that escapes some of the sides and top. It works great. but on really bright days there's still a little that comes thru. How much did the tint cost and were you able to put it on yourself?

I too did the poster boards but couldn't easily look OUT the windows when I needed to so I put the reusable Limo auto glass tint on my bedroom windows and I also have blackout curtains. The curtains helped but still let light around the edges, so we put the tint up and it does awesome! Plus I can still open the curtains and see out without having to peel stuff off the windows (and no one can see in)!

Tape aluminum foil to the glass panes with painters tape. Darkens your room but is cheap and easy to remove. It works great.

Yeah, girl, I've done the ghetto with the black poster board and the gray tape! lol I like the blanket idea but my rods are not strong enough for that! I'm gonna get new black out curtains and this time get some curtain rods that are big enough that if I need extra I can do the dark blanket. I did try the sleep mask. but it bothers me while I sleep. So, I'm on line searching for black out curtains and large curtain rods! emoticon Thanks for all your comments! emoticon

Tracey, you might want to try wearing a nightime eye patch to block out any sunlight. I don't sleep without it.

I'm really working on getting enough sleep. and have found that When it's really dark in my room, I sleep much better. I first bought some room darkening shades, and that works some but light still comes thru. then I taped black poster board to the windows. This worked great! until. . . I wanted to open the window and let the light in. Any good suggestions? Know of any good light blocking shades, or curtains?
