A multitude of emotions, grief, sadness, happiness all meshed together as I think about Dalhousie's long life, He was included in so many of our activities. Truly he was part of the family, our baby...

RIP

Welcome Glenda..
I Love the life on Vancouver Island... even though I live over in Squamish

Monday I went down to the river to read some scripture, brew a cup of coffee and to whittle.
It was an enjoyable relaxing afternoon...

My old boy stayed home,, I so miss our times out together

Hi there
I am originally from NS but moved to VCI on May 01 of this year. I came to be with my daughter and family who moved here 4 years ago. She is also a member of this team.
I have been with SparkPeople since 2017 and have lost over 100lbs. It has been such a life saver to me.
I am looking forward to more adventures here on the Island and would like to meet other Sparkers from here.
I am going out now for my walk with my pooch. Enjoy your day.

As we left my friends house, I noticed the time and thought this would not be a pleasant drive, driving from one end to the other of Vancouver. An ah ha moment.. we have to drive past Burnaby Lake.. why not stop there to kill some time.. and the Costco is so close too. This way I can enjoy the birds and my wife can get her shopping fix in too. A win/win for all.

male Wood Duck

female Wood Duck

the mr and mrs Wood Duck

female Redwing Blackbird

male Redwing Blackbird. He came right at me, I think he was jealous because I was checking out his mate... no worries my little friend ...

Song Sparrow?

you old Coot you ! America Coot

So was Noni enjoying herself? What you think?
. Dance, dance as if there is no one watching... comes to mind

Me on the other hand am the more reserved one.

Costco.. went to buy a jug of milk only and to browse... left 146 dollars later...

Back on the road again... my wife is beginning to dose off, I notice in y preficial vision. Our route has a slight left turn to continue home or a stay in the right lane to go to the ferry terminal and Horseshoe Bay. I stay in the righthand lane... Noni all of sudden asks where are you going..? I guess she wasnít fully asleep ..
I had decided I wanted to take some more photos...

I see on the news that this ferry hit the terminal dock.. it must had happened just after I took this photo

Back on the road .. all weekends must end..

Monday was another day I packed full since I was off.
My friend who lives in Surrey, is moving back to California... we wanted to drop in say our goodbyes and hug and be on our way. He also was giving us a couple of his orchids that he has had for many years.
We we left the house around 9 am and returned 8:30 pm.
I should had left earlier , we just missed them as they had taken their daughter to the airport.
I thought they were picking her up. .. oh well I left a note saying we would be back in the afternoon. It was now 11:30.
My wife mentioned that she had seen a posting about tulips in Abbotsford.. 35 km away... so off we went.... well itís still a month early and so nothing to see .. drove around looking at the farms and mountains.. enjoying the day.
Then I got a thinking.. there is this all you can eat buffet in the next town over, Chillwack, another 30 km and we havenít been there since 8 years ago. My mouth begins to water.. so we went.
Now Iím over stuffed...
Time to head back to Surrey... took the slow route, stopping to take pictures.. finally we make it to our friends home. Spend about half an hour chatting then head towards home. Time is approximately 4:30. When we leave his home. We drive towards Vancouver, traffic is heavy. I donít want to be stuck in traffic as we get deeper into rush hour so we stop off at Burnaby Lake to see the ducks and do a quick shop at the near by Costco. Traffic is thinning an hour later.
Sail through Vancouver.. stopped at Horseshoe Bay just to take some phots.
Almost home... Noni asked if we should not drop in and say hello to Mom. I was going to do that on Tuesday, but Iím often tired after work especially the first day back, so it was better to do it now. We spent about half an hour with her. Finally we are home.. Dalhousie has been a good dog .
I have so many photos.. how to select and only post a few? Always my Delma!

bad marty... my first plate

Spring arrived here

Well Iíll stop here. Post again our stops at Burnaby Lake and Horseshoe Bay next time

That all you can eat buffet

a piece of Alder Tree .. the inner wood turns red once it is exposed to the air. I was told that Natives would use this to dye things red .

Lilly of the Valley?

Stinging Nettles

I do believe this is Bleeding Heart

on the underside you can paint pictures as art .. it looks like someone engraved their initials to declare their love for all time...
( not Noni and I) .. not that we donít have love for all time.

. Life is returning

our Dalhousie stayed at home, I miss our outings together. But this guy was happy to be with his mom ...

good old faithful America Robin was the only bird I saw. I heard a Crow squawking and seen this Wood Duck house, but not the Wood Duck

So to end the year 2018 the above is what I stepped. I began January 1st the Pacific Crest Trail. This was a good way to keep track and keep me honest. However I thought I would had been further on my way. But with knee pain and the Dalhousie not wanting to walk, I did not push myself.
I must somehow get myself back into walking daily.

To end the year we at least went outside .... getting me off the couch

For those who have been apart of my life these last several years... my Camp Life has ended.
Meeting with the owner a couple of days ago... mutual agreement I must say,.... he is not renewing my contract this coming April . I am done ...
I seen this coming ... I am also not unhappy about it as I was mentally done ...
camp numbers increase every year, longer hours, extra requirements for special meals ( dairy free, soy free, gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, egg free ) and no extra help for me to get everything completed. Iím fed up. Itís time for me to leave.

So what is next? .... I have no idea..

But first..letís eat

Not getting a lot of steps in, however I live in such a beautiful locationó all I have to do is to step out my door ... maybe go for a short drive from my home ... and a few steps from the car .... the beauty is everywhere. I donít need to go hiking, scrambling up mountains or other painful activity on my knee to get a sense of the wonders of creation.
So this afternoon it was decided that we were spending too much time on the couch....

If only I could actually do all this walking along the roads and trails.
But No! Most of this is all done working in a small kitchen.

Victoria to Nanaimo is 88 miles. I have six miles to walk to reach Nanaimo and to continue on the Transcanada Trail.

Ladysmith is 55 miles from Victoria .....

I still have to walk 92 miles to reach Campbell River .. and only eight days before I begin the mini vacation there

I hope I remember correctly.. and this train is in Ladysmith.
I love trains. Iíll stop and take photos whenever I can. At this location I was also looking for another geocache

Hike #2 Victoria to Campbell River BC
114.3 more miles to walk to reach my first goal.

Today I was off. Iíll take it and make the most of it. This morning after my wife woke up.. I get up everyday whether I work or not around 6 am. I asked if she would like to go to the mall. Park Royal to be more exact. She was ready in a flash.... I must mention the mall is over a hour away from Camp highway driving. You know what I mean .... itís not just going down the road ordeal.
We walked around the mall for a while, ate at the food court spent money buying clothes and then headed home. Did a stop ocean side to marvel at the views and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze. Continuing on our way home stopped once more at the Sea to Sky Gondola and had a quick walk about and a coffee.
My relief cook was cooking on the BBQ supper for 20 staff/ campers that still remained at camp and I wanted to get back for supper .. so time to end the day and go home.
Iím feeling rested and happy...
10 days of summer camp remain ...

Up we go from Sea to Sky

Geocaching... the only reason Iím here is to seek and find a hidden geocache.

Geocaching is where you use million dollar Statlights to go seek Tupperware that is hidden. Itís the thrill of the hunt .. the find. Using a gps or a smartphone with coordinates you go out looking ... and your gps will take you to places where you never would had stopped at before or even known existed

#2 Hiking Canada
Victoria to Campbell River = 164 miles
Since August 10 when I began I have walked 30 miles .
This means I need to walk 134 miles yet to reach Campbell River.

Once upon a time I lived just a few miles from Chemainus in a little town called Crofton.
Crofton I still remember like it was yesterday waking up and looking out the window the first morning after moving in and seeing this Wall. It wasnít there before. It magically appeared over night. Iím smiling as I remember this.. I had nevered lived next to an ocean before ... over night an ocean liner ship came into port and docked. It was huge and from my window it looked like a wall.
Another morning ... I wake up to have a crab walking across my bedroom floor.. How - Where did that come from. The day before I was out walking along the beach collecting shells. Some how in one of my empty shells had become home to my crab who now was heading back to the ocean.

Between Crofton and Chemainus there is a beautiful warmish river that people would tube.
This has been the only time I have ever drifted down a river on a huge tractor tire. Awesome, memories.

Iím not done with memories yet... at the camp where I worked the theatre actors of the Chemainus Theatre would come and practice at the Camp. Staff would often get free tickets to the theatre. I love the theatre .

Chemainus is a beautiful place to walk around and look at the murals .. my photos donít do them justice.
I also remember going to this little diner just on a side street that had the best clam chowder I have ever eaten. ( I wonder if it is still there? Probably Not so long ago )

Traveling two trails at once ... gotta love the virtual life eh!

Starting in Victoria BC Iím heading north to Campbell River. This will take me right pass Nanaimo. Why ? Because August 29 Iím going there on vacation. From there I will just walk around BC exploring as I make my way to the East Coast.

My other walk on Walk4fun is on the ....
Pacific Crest Trail
Done: 1,106.2 miles
To-Do: 1,583.3 miles

Canada .. I love my country. I was born in Kingston Ontario and have lived in Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC. I have traveled coast to coast in real life. Never been to the Northern parts though.. someday. So as I walk I probably will have photos or stories to tell..

Victoria to Campbell River 164 miles.
As of today I need to walk 144 miles to reach Campbell River

I have a story about here.. my wife and I went to Victoria, we had booked our room but ended up going a day early.. itís the capital so there should not be a problem getting a room ... how wrong can one be. What we didnít realize was that a special convention was going on... all the hotels in Victoria were full ... No Vacancy! We had to drive almost back to Nanaimo to find a room here in Cowichan Bay . An expensive room at that. Our room in Victoria was available the next day when the convention ended. ( so Iím not making that mistake again, I have booked our hotel in Campbell River and our ferries to and from the island.. it is a Long-weekend and Iím not going early)

Today 151 miles to go

BC Parliament building in Victoria ... so one must stop and explore ..

My progress across Canada... it wonít be straight and quick but Iím on my way.
So much to see and do in Victoria. When we were there we went whale watching, walked all around the downtown area and ,the inner harbour. Listened to street musicians and went into the mini museum. We also went inside the Parliament building.

I gave the day off to Noni.. she has gone with our friend to look at Tulips.
Iím feeding 55 guess this weekend. Tomorrow (Sunday) we both will be off .. today I must prepare all of todayís meals and the food for two meals tomorrow so that my untrained kitchen manager can heat and serve.
So that means a lot of extra work today, and it is so much to do, Iím tired and feeling sore and so

No cancer ... what?
I was called last Wednesday evening, put on this restricted diet of no fruits, no vegetables, no seeds or nuts. I could eat all the protein I wanted. I could eat white pasta, white bread or white rice ... from Wednesday evening to Monday. Monday only clear fluids and then that cleansing drink.
I had no warning, usually you are told in advance... I guess someone canceled out.
I had plans to eat with friends Friday evening at an all you can eat pasta bar.. no problem .. I ate white bread no salad. White pasta with Alfredo sauce with shrimp, bacon, and chicken as the toppers. I did not feel deprived.

Saturday morning brunch with my mother .. so I ordered a club sandwich on white bread without the lettuce or tomato and no mayo, and French fries. It was ok.. I was hungry.

The rest of my meals were ... well not so healthy, and I skipped some

Well Tuesday came.. I had a hour and half wait between two waiting rooms. They were running late. I hate waiting. Oh Iím trying to live in the moment. Learning not to always be strategically planning the future or thinking about should have or shouldn't s. I like being in control and here I am with no control and nothing I can do to make them hurry up..
- there is nothing in my past that could have change the situation Iím in now
- there is no tomorrow.. canít plan, strategize about tomorrow until I know the results
- all there is right now ... this moment as I wait

Finally the anesthesia Dr comes and talks and we take that long walk.
Opening the curtains into the hall way ... way down the hall is a room - doors open - very very bright lights burst forth compared to the lights of the hall. Step by step I go towards the OR.
Do I stop this... avoid finding out the truth , hide and turn and run away .. the room is increasing in brightness and getting closer..
enter the room , nice nurse tells me to sit, anesthesia begins to do what he does.. next thing I know Iím in the recovery room... a new nurse is beside me.. soon she reads the results... No cancer detected is all I hear... no waiting... immediately I hear the results...

Now Iím trying to soak it all in...

So last year No prostrate cancer detected.... this year No colan cancer detected...
Well good.... but why is the doctor so concern about cancer showing up in my tests?
I have a problem..what is causing the problem? Donít know... I guess more test will be in the future...

In the mean time
Sunrise

Sunset

And enjoying

Today we both walked around the block... I havenít taken him around since last fall.... even the Dalhousie is feeling life spring back

So my wife was asked to make seventy cup cakes for our friends seventyth birthday party. Easy no trouble... well also the lady wants seventy minions made from fondant.

Do you realize how much work goes into making fondant from scratch and then forming and designing each character?

Happy Birthday

Valentineís Day
. Official coffe date with my love...
Then later I prepared supper

Now we are headed towards the weekend... I am being sent to Vancouver for a three day course beginning Friday. I think it has to be learning how to be nice to people... be a good leader. Yes Camp is sending me and paying for all including my hotel room.

I met with the Camp owner Tuesday... they want to know my ingredients of all food I prepare...
This might be a challenge... I donít follow recipes in most things I cook.
Talked about Noni who is only going to work part time and maybe hire her as my relief cook, for the summer ...
we have some thinking to do.

There is no going outside this day, very wet once more.
I went to church, Wendyís for lunch, and now home. We will have a bible study in our home later this evening so now it is time to dust and vacuum and hide the clutter.

Oh I also stopped off to pick up two postcards from a friend who had gone to Nepal alittle while back ... what a fantastic addition to my collection

Well I said earlier I was not going out. I lied ... but only a tiny lie. I took the Dalhousie to the park. He did lots of sniffing and I tried to get a picture or two without the camera becoming soaked.
Car ride Dalhousie.... Iím not sure if he heard those words or not, but he understood the rain jacket I was holding meant that he was going out..

he looks happy inspite of the sleet

Same old, same old.. we returned to one of our favourite restaurants for the first time this year.
However we did go walking and discovered this cute park in between the down pours.
This morning the rain was falling like the water flows from the Niagara Falls. But it was not snowing... so off we went on a whole Day Date. Camp season will be upon us so soon and then we wonít be able to just pick up and go when the spirit prompts.

my second one this year, am I becoming an alcoholic?

On the bright side we didnít eat dessert
Play Date

hungry whereís the food ....

I must say, I miss not having the Dalhousie with us constantly... he was home sleeping.
