I have baked since I could dump things into a bowl, but other than a few basic dishes I can't cook at all.
I'm 19 and I can make: scrambled eggs, french toast, basic pasta (boiling pasta and adding a can of spaghetti sauce).

My dad loves to cook, so he is very wary of letting anyone else cook unless he's sick. It's been a battle for the last few years for my parents to let me learn how to cook slowly.

Since I posted this thread, my daughter has turned 11 and has taken home alone course, and a jr iron chef cooking class. She hasn't shown much interest in cooking still, but has helped me when i am cooking.

Thanks everyone for your input. I do have her help me and she has since she was really little. She used to sit on the counter and help from the time she could sit up unassisted.

She has gone camping this week, but when she gets home I will have her help me more with the stove part.

If she's interested, I'd absolutely encourage it! Have her help you / make some things while you're there, first, like show her how to do eggs and grilled cheese and stuff.

I'm pretty sure I was doing simple stuff at that age (probably by 9), although I had a brother who was 3 years older than me around too. I was just always helping out in the kitchen from a young age, like measuring and stuff.

There's too many people out there who have never used the stove or done their own laundry by the time they're heading off to university!

I've lost about 35lbs and gone from slightly over "obese" by BMI to just into "healthy"!

And I can now run for over 5k!

When I was first separated/divorced and working full-time the kids and I decided we would rotate cooking suppers - they were 14, 12 & 11 (they also did their own laundry and lunches for school) - I'll say we had some interesting meals at first! They are now all grown and all three are excellent cooks......

Run with patience the race that is set before you.

My oldest boy is 16 and is still easily distracted in the kitchen. He has burned instant rice a number of times. I am still not sure that leaving him alone in the kitchen is a good thing. I can't remember when he started making things like mac and cheese. I have the three year old help with measuring and stirring. I don't like the thought of the kids by the stove so I would probable have to be present when they start cooking. I like the idea of my children being independent but I also need to make sure that they are safe.

My daughter is 10 and can't even open a banana! She says when she opens them the top always gets mushy. oy. I can't even imagine her using the stove! LOL

She can microwave popcorn and make a peanut butter sandwich, but I suppose it's time to start teaching her how to do some basic cooking....or at least how to open a banana.

I agree with LaurieBLT
NO GREASE COOK AT ALL. Too easy for a fire to start.
Kids can get distracted by their friends calling. etc.
Once I turned my back on a stove with grease. Within minutes I had a fire. If an adult can make that foolish mistake, how much easier for a young child to do so and then not know what to do.

usually, yes. mostly when she's home by herself she would use the microwave but it's not a rule. I think it's different with each child--and where they are in the birth order.

This morning she made eggs. My daughter told me that the other girl used a sharp knife and cut some cheese to put on it.

Laurie, is the older 2 home when your 10 year old is using the stove?

My daughter is 10 and she can cook things like mac and cheese, noodles, boiled eggs, that kind of thing. I don't worry about her using the stove nor the microwave. My only rule for my kids, all of them (10, 14, 17) is that they aren't allowed to use the deep-fryer when I'm not home. (wouldn't be that crazy about them using the bbq either but it's never come up).
What kinds of things does the girl downstairs cook?
Laurie

I have a daughter who is 10 and I do not let her cook. The girl that lives below us is almost 10 and is allowed to cook, even when her mom is not home.

So my question is at what age did you let your kids cook with out your help or with out you present?
