Sheenadee,
I am so proud of you for following through on your colonoscopy. Now you are in a great position to tell your story to friends and family and possibly co-workers to encourage them. I'm so glad your findings were negative, and now you can "relax" until your next procedure. You are on the same scedule as me, for the same reasons. I think we've come a long way in checking for and catching colon cancer early when people follow through with testing. I am also hurting for those who want to take care of their health but due to the economy or poor/no health insurance, they are limited. My daughter is in that situation -- 33 yrs. old, single with 2 Master's Degrees and can't find a job -- even a clerical job. She works as a volunteer at a local hospital right now while living with her dad and me, and the volunteer coordinators LOVE her, but after many, many interviews she is discouraged and beginning to get stressed. She is visually disabled from a very premature birth (but not blind), and she is capable of doing work in her field without accommodation except for having to use public transportation. Still, our "system" is broken, and the ADA law is easy to get around for employers. We really can't prove anything, but we think many times that she has failed to be chosen for a job because of the employer's unfounded fears that she will not be able to perform as well as a fully sighted person. She is stressed about not being able to get regular health care checks-ups. Even a regular annual physical can cost over $500 with lab tests! Anyway, I'm feeling the pain of Sergeantmajor about difficulty in obtaining health care. I'm so happy that you were encouraged by our team comments to get your colonoscopy done!
Susan

Sergeantmajor,

I am truly sorry for your situation. My father is a vet. He had surgery for colon cancer in a VA hospital nearly 4 years ago. I went there to visit him after surgery and during many pre- and post- op visits, so I witnessed firsthand a number of the issues facing our veterans with regard to health care (dated facilities, crowded waiting rooms, long waits, etc.) and now higher charges just to be seen at a VA location. The system truly is broken in many ways.

Those of you who have health insurance are fortunate. forty million of us do not. I signed multiple contacts which were to guaranteed me health care for life if I served twenty years. I honoured my [art of the contract but Uncle has not honoured his part. I am subject to the vagaries of the Veterans Administration hospitals and have to pay for the services I receive. If you think Obamacare or national health care are a violation of your independence please contact anyone you know who has lost their job. In addition review the compensation paid to the executives who run health insurance companies and their obscene bonuses.

The system is broken and the citizens of this country suffer with less than ideal health care in the most wealthy country in the world. In wealth we are in first place in health care we are marginal Third World. check the numbers and our ranking.

Well, today was the day. My colonoscopy was early this morning. All went well. They removed one small, non-cancerous polyp; no other issues. I'm supposed to have the next one in 3 years, because of my father's colon cancer history and I guess the polyp too.

Everything really was better than I expected. The prep was not too awful...at least not as intense as I had anticipated. Although I was a tad worried that wasn't going to make it on the drive to the hospital without a bathroom stop. LOL I remember nothing at all about the procedure itself. Got home, had a breakfast and then slept for the next 8 hours.

I want to thank you all again for your encouragement that pushed me to make the appointment and have this important screening performed. I truly appreciate it.

ROBINMCM: Yay! Good for you! Keep us informed about your appointment and then your prep and procedure!

SERGEANTMAJOR: I sincerely with we could help you with the problems with the VA; in fairness to them, I think that they, like most federally-funded things are working with a budget that has been reduced in the past few years, shorthanded staffs, etc. At one time, the VA was the best thing available to our veterans, but sadly that is no longer the case. All I can say is "keep trying."

Hi All - You were all so sweet about encouraging me about getting my colonoscopy scheduled that I wanted to let you know the doctor has rescheduled my appointment. It was supposed to be tomorrow; but they just called to say he is stuck out of country because of Storm Irene. My new date is Sep 13. I'm actually very disappointed to delay; but oh well, I've delayed for years so 2 weeks is okay.

LINDA: Whatever you did worked--the title of the topic is now for "Screening AFTER..." Thanks for doing this--all too often the original message explaining what you want gets "buried" under a lot of "reply" messages and many people don't take the time to scroll down to the first entry. At least with this title those who don't get a colonoscopy, but do get some kind of screening as a result of joining this team will feel able to post here, too.

Linda - Nope, you can't completely delete a topic. It will live on in infamy. But, you can rename it to something like "please ignore" or whatever if you want people to come to this thread instead.

In answer to your other question: My colonoscopy is scheduled for Aug 30th. I'll be back to report on how it all went afterwards.

With our insurance, I had mine for a $30.00 copay. And it is not great insurance. So I encourage everyone to consult with your insurance company. Would that I could pay for everyone to have one. Maybe I'll run for president.............

Not everyone has insurance. Perhaps your question could be worded differently. I have had the fecal occult blood test several times over the years because it is affordable. There are other methods for testing besides the expensive colonoscopy. Just mentioning that one method can discourage people from getting any testing done because they are unaware of other procedures.

Actually, you can change the Topic if you are the one who originally created the thread. SANDLADY48 just needs to go to the first post she created in this thread and put it in edit mode. She can then change the body of the post as well as the Topic itself. I hope this helps.

SANDLADY48: Is there some way you can change the title of this topic to "Screening AFTER joining this team"?? I would be interested in hearing from even those that could only afford a stool card test as well as any who actually scheduled and/or had a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is, of course, the best thing to do, but all too many people (especially in today's economic conditions) who can't afford health insurance, let alone pay for one on their own.

I scheduled my colonoscopy as a direct result of TRICIAN13's challenge to me when I joined the team. I made the appointment that day (as was challenged to do) and took the first available date, which is Aug 30. Now I kinda wish it was sooner.
