I love an occasional grapefruit. The red ones. I peel the skin off the wedges and eat the pulp. The skin tastes nasty, but the pulp! Wonderful stuff.

I remember FIL had to avoid foods with vitamin K because of blood thinners. So anyone taking meds should really do their research.
Let's not slay the grapefruit, LONG LIVE THE GRAPEFRUIT!

Yeah, I had never heard of that (I don't need to be told to avoid it - I hate grapefruit, lol!) - it's a pretty long list of interactions!

At the Constitutional Convention, George Mason asked: Shall any man be above Justice? Above all shall that man be above it, who can commit the most extensive injustice? . . . Shall the man who has practiced corruption & by that means procured his appointment in the first instance, be suffered to escape punishment, by repeating his guilt?

Could be, but I had to be on a drug for a year for histoplasmosis and had strict orders to stay away from grapefruit of any kind. That's when the LSU dr told me that most people should avoid it due to the fact that it interacts with so many medications.

Always best to be aware! And it's not just statins as you see by the list of medications.

Perhaps its the statins that need to be avoided?

You need to be very careful with grapefruit and grapefruit juice as it can cause harmful effects with a lot of medication. Just be sure to check your medication before taking it.The grapefruit juice-drug interaction can lead to unpredictable and hazardous levels of certain important drugs. I've been on two drugs that had this complication and my last doctor, a specialist with LSU Medical School said most people should avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. See article in link below.
www.medicinenet.com/grapefruit_juice
_a
nd_medication_interactions/views.htm
These are medications with which grapefruit juice should NOT be consumed unless advised by a doctor:

Statins (cholesterol drugs): lovastatin (Mevacor), atorvastatin Lipitor, simvastatin Zocor, simvastatin/ezetimibe (Vytorin)
Antihistamines: fexofenadine (Allegra), (terfenadine (Seldane), taken off the U.S. market
Calcium channel blockers (blood pressure drugs): nimodipine (Nimotop), felodipine (Nitrendipine, Plendil), nisoldipine (Sular), nicardipine (Cardene), verapamil (Verelan)
Psychiatric medications: buspirone (BuSpar), triazolam (Halcion), carbamazepine (Tegretol), diazepam (Valium), midazolam (Versed), sertraline (Zoloft)
Intestinal medications: cisapride (Propulsid) taken off the U.S. market
Immune suppressants: cyclosporine (Neoral), (tacrolimus) Prograf
Pain medications: Methadone
Impotence drug: (erectile dysfunction): sildenafil (Viagra)
HIV medication: saquinavir (Invirase, Fortovase)
Antiarrhythmics: amiodarone (Cordarone), disopyramide (Norpace)

Toxic blood levels of these medications can occur when patients taking them consume grapefruit juice. The high blood levels of the medications can cause damage to organs or impair the organs normal function, which can be dangerous. If you or a family member are taking any of these medications, beware of the "nutrapollutical" grapefruit juice.

MCT stands for medium chain fatty acid.
MCT's are broken down quicker and used for energy right away. I believe coconut oil can be used to improve athletic performance.I feel better about my work-outs when I use it.
I don't drink coffee this way but I believe that people who are looking to prolong the period between waking and their first meal drink it to keep the hunger at bay. I believe I read that grapefruit juice also extends the effects of caffeine and lessens the crash feeling. Which reminds me I'm out of grapefruit. Dang.

It's like the cats vs. dogs thing - very individual.

I have a hard time drinking tea, actually; it makes my mouth feel dry and I end up eating or drinking something else to compensate.

Good point, Faith. Just like chocolate. Sure it tastes great, but it actually does have food value as well. It's only when you overdo with the added sugar that it cancels out the benefit.

There actually is some good stuff in coffee. There recently was an article on Authority Nutrition all about it. I will see if I can find it. So far the only article I find looks like the one you are speaking of. www.webmd.com/diet/features/does-cof

I mostly swapped out protein for the fat, so I'm not really losing much nutritional value - I was eating way too much protein for my activity level already (routinely over 120g per day, and I'm only modestly active at best).

I'm drinking the fat in my coffee more for the energy than the nutrition. It keeps me going until about 11:30 or 12:30 most days, then I eat solid food for the rest of the day. I'd still like to get one more serving of veg in during the day (I currently get 3-4 routinely) but dinner has been pretty hit-or-miss lately, and that's where I'd likely fit in one more serving.

EDIT: A clarification. The "REAL" "Bulletproof Coffee" is actually made with MCT oil and unsalted butter. That's not what I drink anyway. Mine is a teaspoon of coconut oil and about 4T of half and half; it's about 115 calories per mug. (I tried HWC, but I REALLY go over on calories on that!)

Great question.

I eat eggs, meat, butter, coconut oil, evoo, cream, and veggies. I haven't taken my multivitamins for almost the whole year and I have been feeling great! So I don't know if I have been missing any nutrients.

I would say post your meals in the SP tracker and see if you are getting all your nutrients and if you are not, then take a multivitamin.

I was looking up a recipe for Bulletproof Coffee, thinking I would modify to make Bullet-Resistant Tea, and saw a post on Three Reasons Not To Drink Bulletproof Coffee. (No, I am not criticizing anyone who does!) I don't remember one of the reasons, but the other two make sense to me.

First, while saturated fats are not the enemy, BPC seems to be anywhere from 2 to about 10 tablespoons of fat - butter, coconut oil, or MCT fat, whatever that is. Just because something is good for us in moderation doesn't mean it's good for us in excess. And we probably didn't evolve to essentially be eating this type of fat by itself. We evolved to eat saturated fat as part of something - in the meat we ate, in the coconut meat we ate, and so forth. Not by itself. OK, I can see that.

What really hit home, though, was that by replacing breakfast with BPC (or replacing anything else with BPC) we are losing a lot of nutrition. Yes, there is some nutrition in coconut oil and in butter (especially if it's grass fed), but there's no protein or fiber or the vitamins and minerals and trace elements and so forth that there is in "real" food.

I don't drink BPC or even Bullet-Resistant Tea, but I have been limiting protein and carbs and using fat to get my calories up to an appropriate level. I hadn't thought about missing nutrients because of that. At the moment, because of the food stamp challenge, I usually have a salad for one meal and the fat in that is 4 tablespoons of safflower oil mayo from Aldi. Not a good choice for a lot of reasons. After this month and the challenge are over I'll start making my own olive oil mayo, but it's still a lot of reliance on fats that aren't particularly nutrient dense. My other meal usually has about 4 tablespoons of coconut oil. The rest of my 75%+ fat does come from the food I eat - mostly eggs and the fat from meat.

Have any of the rest of you thought of this? How are you getting in your nutrients when you rely so much on fats for most of your calories?
