When I don't eat anything and my blood sugar is high it gets higher. I do better if I eat a low carb. meal or snack. I eat like cheese, meat and a salad or celery and peanut butter. Sometimes nuts and vegetables. I am not sure what but, I know that not eating is a bad choice for me. Seeing your doc is a good idea.

I've been having a real problem with my blood sugars and exercise. My bs goes up over 100 points if I put in 30 minutes of fast walking or strength training. The more I exercise - the higher it goes. And it takes a really long time to come down. I'm currently reworking my diet now to really cut back on the carbs. No more that 15 at a meal. No snacks! My blood sugar is frequently too high for snacks.

I was told not to even think of eating if my bs was over 250.

I'm told to eat something within two hours of exercising.

And when I test I find I shouldn't have anything.

I'm so confused now. I've had to break down and order more test sticks so that I can test before each meal, fasting and before bedtime in order to dc everything. My metformin and glipizide are now being taken at the appropriate times.

I'm going to make an appointment soon to see someone about this - cuz its just driving me crazy.

I am sorry I did not have time to explain myself yesterday. If I go out and exercise when My bloodsugar is high it gets higher before it goes down. But, it eventually goes down so my A1c and overall health are better.

I think exercise is good always. But, was warned in my DE class that one should not exercise with a bloodsugar over 250.

I agree with MSGEO1 it depends on what your blood sugar is before you exercise. If it's high then you'll work it down if it's low you might pass out so eat something small not an entire meal unless you're going to wait awhile before you exercise.

CurdyWurdy - thanks for the reference to the article on Carbohydrates and exercise. I have had a few incidents of Hypoglycemia after my water aerobic classes, but never after my walks in the morning. This explained the difference in intensity of the exercise - had never thought about that. I always try to eat something before going to the pool now. Great to have it explained better. I saved the article to my favorites.

FarmerBarb - Keep on walking - it is one of the best exercises to do. It should help to take a fasting blood sugar (first thing in the morning before eating) to see where your bs is at, and then compare with 2 hours after. You may be eating too much or too much sugar for breakfast. Just a thought. Hope this helps!

I have read that you test before you exercise if your numbers are too low than you need to eat something and than test again. Never exercise when your numbers are low because you might bring your numbers down low and be in trouble.

I've read that one should wait at least an hour after eating before exercise. The SP article "Carbohydrate Adjustments for Exercisers With Diabetes" may be helpful, too.

Hi. I think you're over thinking it a little. When I'm not firmly in control, by blood sugars fluctuate like crazy. Instead of post-breakfast measurements, most health experts seem to ask for fasting blood sugar levels, measurements taken before any breakfast. Apparently, they give a better understanding of what is really happening.
I finally experienced 'firmly in control' about 6 weeks ago. My doctor doubled my metaformin, I was doing serious walking, and I was having success limiting my carbs, and avoiding eating after supper. My A1-C dropped from over 9 to 6.9. My fasting blood sugars were consistently under 130 for a couple weeks, and for 3 or 4 days consistently under 95. After that I did some late night, carb-loaded eating, and saw f.b.s. values back in the range of 150 to 215.
I'm a lot older than you are; I'll be 57 soon, and that makes a difference. The only way for me to be healthy and happy is to work on all the issues together, that is: limiting portion size; exercising, good food choices (whole grains and not much icing or cream), light snacks, and getting my rest.
Sorry to go on so long, and I hope there's something useful here. You sound like you're ready to do great things for yourself.

2 hrs after breakfast, BS was 241
3 hours later, after a 30 minute brisk walk and no food, BS is 137

I can see that walking has a huge effect on the BS level. My question - is it better to exercise before I eat lunch or after? Or am I totally overthinking this whole thing?
