The Synvisc shot I had seems to be really helping. I was able to get so much work done yesterday with little pain. A cold front that came in really caused pain this morning, but all is better now. I have one more shot to do next Friday and I hope the improvement continues.

Shirley - you are wise to lose weight. Everything I read says that being overweight is hard on our knees. I am trying hard to make sure I do not gain back the weight I lose with Spark People. I use to walk everyday on my lunch hour and when I first retired last year. But knee pain has made me afraid to venture far from the house. I have a stationary bike that normally I try to ride at least 30 minutes. Since you don't want a knee replacement, you might want to ask your doctor about the Synvisc shots.

RENOKAT52 - that was so strange about the hand santizer. I normally never use them unless I unable to use soap and water. What kind of exercises do you do?

FYI...I take narcotic pain meds and in my state it requires, which is a good thing, drug testing. My last test came up positive for alcohol and I have never drank nor would start now. Found out that the hand cleaner I put on my cuts, scratches and use liberally have caused this problem. Now, we need to see if it is also causing stress on the liver, as I am in liver failure. Just a heads up for anyone else whom might be in the same situation.

I am so careful and never in a million years would have thought about not using hand sanitizer.!

I really enjoy the exercises for limited mobility here, they have improved my range of motion, my attitude, and given me something to do everyday. Glad to hear from everyone, and hope all are doing super!! Plus, an added benefit, have decreased the amount of meds for pain that I have had to take. Check out the video's here, they really are good.

THEELOPERS -

I am so sorry about what you are going through. I am 68 years old and retired a year and half ago. But I had a torn cartilage in 2009 in my right knee and had to use a crutch until I had surgery. I was walking from this huge parking lot, using one crutch and pulling a laptop behind me. Why I did not get a handicap sticker looking back is crazy! So, I am glad to hear your co-workers have been great.

Now I am experiencing bad knee pain in the left knee. If the Synvisc shots do not work, I am going to be open to knee replacement. So, I would be very interesting in your journey through knee replacement.

I haven't posted in a long time. Bad me!

I broke my foot in February which led to surgery and 12 weeks in a boot! The first 8 I couldn't bear any weight so I had a knee cart to get around, which was great....however, (that's like a BIG BUT) that happened to be the worst of my knees.

emoticon

After 8 weeks I could walk on it as bearable. I did very well those 4 weeks.

A week after I was out of the boot I did a "toe pick" at work and fell BAM right on that bad knee! To say the least I have been out of major commission since then. Oh, I am still getting around but not much exercise being done! I can't squat, lunge, or even ride my recumb bike without pain. I did find some exercises to help strengthen the muscles in my legs. I have been trying to keep on track with those.

I am having a total knee replacement on October 23. Dr said I was on the young side but once I told him of the pain I am constantly in he decided we should just do it. The normal angle from top of leg thru knee to bottom of the leg is 7 degrees. My right knee is over 20 degrees. I am excited and anxious at the same time.

emoticon

Work has been great! I have an office job so that's not so bad. The guys did the floor running for me and they are willing to do it again after my knee replacement surgery so I shouldn't be out of work too long. There is also an elevator so I won't have to go up and down the stairs to my office.

I am new to this site. I, too, have been experiencing incredible knee pain the past week-end despite the beautiful weather. I am not overweight and do physical therapy every night to keep the muscles around my knees strong. I also try to ride my stationary bike several times a week.

I am to get my first Synvisc shot this Friday to try and reduce the pain.

If I am interpreting your weight correctly you are down from 214 to 206. This would lead one to question your comment that you are unable to lose weight. Could it be you are frustrated that you can't lose faster? If so please remember that you have lost 8 lbs which is no easy feat. Remember too, that some of your physical issues may get better as you lose weight which in turn may help you lose weight. So hang in there lady. You are worth the effort.

Hello, Team mates. I'm new to this team and hope I can pick up some tips on how to control my pain while trying to lose the weight I keep gaining. Type 2 Diabetes, insomnia, painful joints, etc. etc. all seem to be working against me right now. I do seem to do better and feel better on the days where I can exercise.

My weight seems to continue rising no matter I do.

Thank you for your help,
Renie

Please try to remember the pain will pass even when it seems it will never end. Assuming you can tolerate them you could also take an OTC painkiller like Tylenol or Advil. Heat or ice might be worth a try too. I also noticed that your goal is to lose 85 lbs. As such you might find the following to be of interest: Inflammation is a major driver of pain we experience with Arthritis. Being overweight is a major cause of inflammation. Continuing to lose weight just might help with the pain so hang in there with your efforts to do so. For now best to you for feeling better soon.

Hopefully your sonograms prove productive. Keep us posted. I also hope you have given yourself a pat on the back for modifying some of your activities rather then quitting them. I know from experience this is not always easy to do.

Tomorrow I go to get the first two sonograms. We are trying to determine why my right lower leg and foot swell so much. I am salt free and the rest of my body does not swell except for a bloat at times. We shall see what we shall see. I go in about a week later for another sonogram and see a doctor. emoticon

I am working toward a new life style that includes all the good things, but seeking alternate ways of doing them. I realize that I can not swim using certain strokes that irritate my shoulders, so I will be concentrating on finding other ways to enjoy the cooling pools when I visit at homes with swimming parties. Tea parties are a special treat for my children and grandchildren. Saturday, they celebrated our tea times by all getting together and taking me to a tea room. That is part of the reason that I wrote a poem I wrote as my last blog. It celebrated my old whistling tea kettle that boiled the water but never got to the parties.

Had a wonderful weekend. All the girls got together and took me out for tea. That is five daughters, a blessed daughter in law, and eight granddaughters. My daughter in law and girls drove About 4 hours here on Saturday and four hours back on Sunday. After tea we all went swimming at on of the homes. Sometimes with arthritis we have to try several things before we find what we can comfortably do. The main thing is you are doing what you can do. That's what counts.

Bad new day for me. New x-rays show that my problems have escalated beyond my expectations. The doctor has offered me heavier pain meds and if this keeps up being so debilitating, I may take him up on them. I try to keep one step lower that he offers. I know this will get worse and I so not want to build up a tolerance to stronger and stronger medication.

OK done with feeling sorry for me.

Tomorrow we go for Ray's blood work and his shot the next day--only three medical appoints this week--Yeah. Also tomorrow we can walk after he gets blood work done. That is always pleasant. Because of the heat and humid y we walk in the mall and see all the new styles.

I know it is hard when you get hit with pain out of the blue. Try to be patient with your body and remember that it will heal, even if not as fast as you might like. So here are some positive vibes to help you hang in there!

Kathy,
I have tried you suggested exercise. It really is felt in the calf as well as in the back of the thigh. I have been doing a couple twice a day since I felt so much pulling. Will check it out with the doctor tomorrow.

All you folks are wonderful in giving me good advice. I am going to build up a bit at a time. I do walk most days, but I am using a walker to keep me balanced. The Menierre's that took my hearing also affects my balance and give me vertigo attacks. Some times I just cannot get to doing even the computer. Since I fractured my pelvis last November even sitting can be a "pain"

Kathy,
I remember that from rehab years ago. I shall try it again. I need to get up and get going. I have been so down mentally and physically that I have neglected everything. I am going to try this. I need to get to doctor's next week for swollen leg,and other problems. I know I am tired of being tired and pain and/or pain pill do not help a bit. Hopefully this old/new exercise will help
my legs so I can walk more easily and maybe someday without walker.
Thanks, Shirleymae emoticon

RS1954, I really like this stretch - It has helped my new hip and new knee keep going without the usual muscle aches and shortening.

Grab your bands or jump rope, towel or anything that you can hook over your foot while laying flat. Lay on your back on your bed or floor - hook bands over your foot in the ball area - extend leg up, keeping knee straight - when it is up as far as you can get it pull the bands so that the front of your foot is pulled downward and you can feel a nice stretch on the back of your leg - hold this for a count of 5 then release. 30 repeats. When I started this exercise my leg would only go to about 40 degrees - I currently can lift my leg up to the 90 degree angle without any problem.

When I first started rehab, my leg muscles were so shortened it made my whole back ache. Over the weeks, as I did this exercise, I was able to lengthen the leg muscles to the point where I can now touch my toes. The leg and back pains are gone and my new joints are happy!

Good luck to you.

I had PT today for my arms, shoulders and neck. After my exercises they did an ultra sound treatment for my elbows as that is where my nerves are pinched. I also had massage therapy for my neck and shoulders. Wonderful after some of the knots were gone.

We are coming to MONSOON time here, so moisture move in and out daily. No real rain now, but lots of wind thinning the blossoms on the citrus trees so they can bear the weight of the fruit. If ever blossom were an orange, the limbs would break.

This is an uncomfortable time for me, so I am going to keep myself in check with exercise, doing what is comfortable but not working to the point of pain. Shirl

Hi all,
This may not be good for every one, but since I fell and fractured my pelvis in four places, I am on a walker and my knee pain is much reduced. They had tried a cane earlier to help me walk, but it damaged my shoulder (added aches). I fall a lot due to inner ear problems so most joints are damaged and I use ice pack and heating packs a lot.

Shirl

PS I only walk any distance (or shopping) in good athletic shoes.

Here is add another tip to reduce knee pain when walking. Take shorter steps and put each foot down as lightly as you can. It also helps to reduce the sway in your hips when you walk. It takes a little practice but you can do it. Incidentally, according to my Physical Therapist, these actions will also preserve your hips.

Went for a swim in a friend's pool yesterday and found it was SO much fun running again, that I've decided to see if there's a hotel nearby that will let us pay to swim there! (We're pretty rural - no Y's so high schools with pools, so that's all I can think of.) Anyway, what a great way to be able to run again!

Have a great day, everyone.

I found on my walk this morning that if I put my foot more in front of me I did not getting the stabbing pain in my knee. It made me think of gym in school when we were shown to put one foot in front of the other as if we were walking on a beam. Guess I need to learn to walk again, without knee surgery, hopefully. Maybe some others would find this helpful. emoticon emoticon

If I could offer you some encouragement to PEGGIE57 or anyone else having physical problems, it would to “hang in there”. It is not easy having a bad knee, being overweight and trying to lose weight. I had a lateral menisectomy about 14 years ago and the surgeon told me I would need a TKR. He also told me I was developing arthritis and needed to lose 35 lbs. Well I didn't lose weight. In fact we can fast forward and see that I gained weight 25 lbs. I have also found over the years that I can’t be as physically active as I would like to be due to pain. I suspect this all sounds very familiar, right?

But because something is hard doesn’t mean it can’t be done. It has been challenging but I have lost 32 lbs. in the last 2 years. I lost about 60% of it by eating healthy and just cutting down over time. The rest I lost by going on a couple of different stricter programs. I appreciate that losing weight slower is probably a more healthy approach which is why I did not stay on either of the strict programs for more than a month. However I have to say that knee pain has a way of testing ones patience. Let me add with the help of SP I have kept the weight off. Now if I lose another 25 lbs. I can decide whether to have a TKR or if I can wait and see if they come up with a less intrusive TKR surgery.

So keep your chin up and remember you are worth the effort!!

and just discovered that my food sensitivities (lactose) can influence sleep so I've started dealing with that by taking a Lactaid tablet before bed each night. It helps some. Other problems I have that influence my sleep are congestion/sinus drip from other sensitivities or allergies so I use a good decongestant and work on mitigating other possible factors (put my pillow in the dryer on high heat before bed to get rid of dust mite possibilities, etc.).

I figure if I can better my sleep, the pain will be less and less pain will help with the sleep too.

Hi, i had a similar problem with my little finger. I volunteer at a Rehab and I asked the Occupational therapist about the numbness. She said to check how you position your arm while you sleep. Bent under your pillow as a side sleeper is no good. A a back sleeper, I was curling my wrists and bending my arms. No good. She explained I am pinching the nerve in the arm and wrist which then makes the fingers go numb. Sometimes when I am on the phone too long, I get the same result. Try sleeping with your arm and hand straight and see if that works for you.

Entirely too much wrist pain! I'm looking forward to Wednesday when I go to the physical therapist and see if we can do something about this!

So sorry Peggy! I know it's been said a lot, but I must agree that the pool is a lifesaver for me and I get a lot of good exercise that is not possible on dry land.

I had an arthroscopy on my right knee to fix a torn meniscus that happened during a fall. He said the knee has a lot of arthritis & will need to be replaced in 5-7 years. He also said I will need to lose a lot of weight before he will do it. I haven't had much success & I've been trying for more than 2 years.

I used aqua therapy for approximately 2 years. I only stopped because the facilities kept lowering the water temperature. My body also spasms and hurts when the water is cold/cool, under 85 degrees

Aqua therapy has been a life changer for me. For the last 2 1/2 year's I've had to exercise in a heated pool. If the water isn't warm my muscle trigger into painful spasms. But I take it slow and stretch a lot, and I'm seeing positive results. This week I was only able to use the pool on Monday and my pain level this week has been higher. I hope the pool has more availability next week. I know it helps. But it wasn't immediate nor easy.

Kind of like being in space. They wear a space suit. We use a bathing suit.
