Living in China I have help because the cost is a fraction of what it would be in the States. She comes 2.5 days a week, some of that time is while I'm in language class and sometimes to clean and help with grocery shopping and other errands. (And she makes some mean noodle dishes...) It was weird at first having someone in my house but now she's like family and actually one of my closest friends here. My boys love her- that was huge for me! When she's not here I realize how much I am blessed to have her help around the house.

During periods of ill health I have hired outside cleaning service ladies. I was pleased with all but one. It was a alternate Thursday clean. The one on the team of two was haphazard. I spoke to her quietly and let her know if her work wasn't improved it was bye bye. She was fine from that day on. One tip I always did check references, verified the insurance before the 1st appt. to clean.

During a very difficult financial time in my life, a good friend asked me to clean and organize his house. Why is it easier to clean someone else's home? Anyway, I did a good job consistently and HIS neighbor made him give me a raise.

Then one day when he was at my house to pay me, MY neighbor saw him and told me to set up a date. A year later they were married and that was the end of my house cleaning career. I was matron of honor and they have been married about 20 years now.

Thanks for the fond memory.

I have a small house and a sick husband who has never wanted anyone to come in the house. However, he did recently hire a handyman. That has been a blessing. The young man is an excellent worker and has been very kind.

I have a wonderful lady come once a month to do a thorough cleaning. I have had her come for about 10 years and it is worth every penny.
I try to keep up with the yard-work, outside stuff, etc on my own...........but I work full time and it is hard to do.

I used to have a cleaning lady, until I lost my day job & can't afford her any more. And boy! does the house look the worst for losing her!

She was quite the incentive to get the clutter picked up! I had no intention of paying her to clear off horizontal surfaces, or wash my dishes, so I would do all that myself, even if it had to be the night before she was coming!

She had a minimum of 3 hours, and was great when I first hired her. I was generally not home when she was there, but gradually I realized she wasn't putting in the entire 3 hours. She would clean the bathroom, vacuum & dust the living room & hall, clean the kitchen & mop the floor. And be gone in a cloud of dust in about 2 hours. There was a lot more she could have done, & which I asked her to do but she never did it (like cleaning the oven, which I'm physically incapable of doing, or wiping down the woodwork, etc.)

So I wasn't sorry to let her go -- hopefully soon I can find someone else that I can afford, & who will do a better job.

I have my windows cleaned professionally a couple of times a year inside and out, and at least once more outside only.
Also every two weeks a Garden Service squad of 3 men do the heavy work in my garden for an hour - grass, hedge, cut branches, clear up. I do the pretty bits!

Both of these jobs are time consuming, tedious and require more strength than I am willing to put in. I do the rest of the work (or not) myself, although I would love to have someone move the furniture and clean behind it a couple of times a year, while I go out to play :0

I know what you mean, Knuckles-it was SO MUCH easier to clean when my helper was here cleaning. I would start because I wanted to pick up the worst stuff before she came, but then I would keep going even while she was here because watching her work inspired me. We talked and the time sped by. "Many hands make short work!" I think one of the things that makes housework such a challenge for me is the fact that it can be rather isolating.

I haven't had a cleaning lady since we left Bermuda. I keep saying that as soon as I get my house really clean I'm going to hire someone to help me keep it clean.

We have two nice ladies from house cleaning company, who come to our house every other week. They are very nice and efficient, I have no complaints. At first it felt awkward if I happened to be home when they came, but now I just go downstairs to be out of their way when they clean upstairs and upstairs when they clean downstairs. Or we go out or somewhere. Hiring them was a great, great idea!!!

The price isn't bad, here in Finland we have this thing called tax credit for household help and domestic costs - you can get tax relief for househelp like cleaning and house renovation jobs. The limit is about 3700 dollars maximum, from what you've paid in one year ~120 dollars is reduced (for example, you pay 3000 dollars a year - 120 dollars = 2880 dollars). From that sum, where 120 dollars has been counted off, you get 60% back. For example, you've left with 2880 in former example, you get paid back 1728 dollars. I'm not good in explaining that, hope you get it... So after tax relief I have to pay only about 75 dollars a month myself. Good deal, I think, as it takes about 1,5 hours for two to clean our home.

Our two ladies are our angels, I have to say! Working in 3 shifts and having 3 kids aged 4, 6 and 9 is enought for me, I am so happy I decided to hire them! I still have to clean and tidy some in between their visit, but still it's less than I'd do without them.

If two are not working, but still getting paid, I would speak to the one who is working and explain the general feeling. If they are a packaged deal, perhaps the one who is working can motivate the other two. If not, then replace the two who are not taking the job seriously.

The only outside help I have is a high schooler who mows the lawn. All the cleaning, etc. is done by myself, my daughter or granddaughter.

During the years I was taking care of my mom I used my mom's monthly check to hire outside help, and was lucky to find a very mature and responsible high school girl. At first it was for a half a day of cleaning every other week, but after mom became incontinent the girl volunteered to come more often to help with laundry, and as mom got worse I needed someone to sit with her while I shopped, or do the shopping for me. Just before I finally had to put mom in the nursing home this girl was coming every day and she was a blessing in my life, like family, better than family, certainly worth every penny I paid her and then some. I watched her grow up, graduate, marry, have a child, and go back to college. She was so much more than a housecleaner, and knowing that remarkable young woman renewed my faith in young people and my hope for the future.

So I'm curious to see if anyone else use house cleaners and if you're satisfied with them..I have outside help and there are three of them and one I'm quite satisfied with but the other two I have to go behind and express my dissatifaction with what they do...I really only want to keep the one...but it's a lot to handle...The others simply run their mouths and miss a lot in the process....

What's your experience with outside help?
