This thread will close at the end of August as most places will start school (if not already going) and we will start a new one at that point.

My summer days are long gone - already into our third week back to school. Today I am pretending summer has returned by taking a day off for doctor's appointment and PT session.

Yesterday I did one more step to get ready for school. I went to get hair cut, styled, even curled and colored. Got a mani-pedi done and basically spent the entire day getting pampered. All set to head back on Monday. I am still exhausted after a day out - a little concerned how the next few weeks will go, but at least I will feel like I look as good as I can considering the circumstances.

Today I went to the residential facility where my students live to figure out who will be in my class. There might be as few as 6 or as many as 8 - 2 are questionable for various reasons. One moved home with her family but they were already looking for a different residential situation before she came home - the facility doesn't know for sure whether she will be here this year. The other one they said would be in my class, but her IEP suggests he will be in someone else's class because despite his behaviors, he is higher functioning than my students. I know all the other students and so no surprises. I don't make the decisions about who is in my class - the principal and Special Education director will make that decision and I will teach whoever walks through my door.

Today I returned to the fitness center and to my personal trainer. He worked me pretty hard but didn't push beyond what was appropriate based on the advice of my PT. I was sweating up a storm. Felt good to be easing back into my normal life and routine. School starts Monday for staff and I need to be ready! Next week is my appointment week - scheduled appointments for every day except Friday after school. Already had my dental appointment, next week is personal trainer, eye doctor, 2 PT, and a lovely massage.

Hope you have a great rest of your week.

I go back about the same time - I hope you are feeling well enough when you go back. My sil had to retire about 5 years ago after a fall and still has balance and headache issues. She slipped in a puddle at school. She didn't even get workers comp - they said it was her own fault. I am hoping to get the okay from my doctor to go back to work - had knee
replacement surgery 2 weeks ago on my right leg. May not get it right away but I can hope.

Good luck hope your sub didn't make your space too chaotic.

March 21 I went to school. During first hour I tripped over a broken cafeteria bench leg and got a serious concussion and broken elbow. I have not been back to work since. My summer has been mostly about getting better. I am still having some issues with elbow mobility and minor concussion symptoms (slight headaches, ringing in ears, occasional slowed thinking and stuttering). School starts in two weeks. I have no idea what my room will be like after having a sub for two months and for summer school. Hoping to get in tomorrow and to start getting ready for the new year. So very eager to get back yet nervous if I'll be able to make it through the whole day.

Krys, the prayers are greatly appreciated. Before I left the hospital, I was able to bend my knee at 101 degrees of the 120 that is my goal. Normally, they start at 60 - 65 degrees. This is one of the benefits of having been exercising regularly with my personal trainer who was focusing on strengthening my legs for this surgery. The nurse who called to check on me said today is typically the worst day and that it should get better from here on out. Tonight I was in less pain the third time on the CPM (continuous passive motion) machine that bends and stretches my knee for me instead of my having to do it myself. I am supposed to do it three times a day for two hours at a time, for six hours total each day. I am very determined to be back on my feet and ready to start the school year on time.

Good news is that I will probably be able to start school at the beginning of the year. I was worried that I might be cutting it too close with surgery so near that date. Doctor said if no problems I should be okay by mid August.

Krys - in our county they have recently had to add an alternative classroom as well as a behavior classroom in three of our six elementary schools. Up until about 8 years ago they ONLY had them at the high school level and then the added them to the middle schools because the problems kept escalating. Now for the past couple of years they have put them in the elementary schools. We are in a poor, rural county and our students come from homes filled with trauma - parent and sibling deaths, parent and sibling incarceration, divorce, blended families, homelessness, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, alcohol and drug issues, etc. It is a genuine crisis!

Beachcomer - I had to force the general education teachers to learn that a simple question DOES require higher level cognitive skills for my students than for general education students. When my students work "together" by doing the same thing next to each other but not cooperating, the simple fact they are sitting at the same table and not acting out is a MAJOR big deal. I fought for fair comparison by pointing out that expecting identical performance from kids with such dramatically different cognitive levels is NOT fair. I win more than I lose, especially after describing an OBVIOUSLY weird situation where demanding identical treatment is so clearly obvious that NO rational person would deny that equal is NOT fair.

The example I give is a situation with the entire room full of teachers at a meeting. One teacher drops to the floor having an apparent heart attack. The principal is debating what to do, (life saving measures, CPR call 911, etc. ?) Finally the principal walks over to the person on the floor and apologizes, saying I would like to help you but it wouldn't be FAIR to all the rest of the teachers if I help ONE and do not do the same for everyone in the room. Besides there just isn't time to perform life saving measures on everyone in the room - and OBVIOUSLY even though they do NOT need it, it just isn't fair - so, he can't do it for anyone.

I feel very uncomfortable about rating my peers. I also see how sped teachers ( which I am) will score lower on this evaluation because for example a lot of my kids have delays which make it challenging or impossible to carry on conversations or to answer why, how, tell me... kind of questions. If those conversations do not exist you get marked down. If a child exhibits any type of "bad" behavior that you are unable to stop with one redirection, Yep, you get marked down. Not fair!

What we do is a mystery to most general education teachers. I admire and am mystified by the general education teachers because there is no way I could tolerate the extreme rudeness and disrespect of so many of their students.

Our school does something similar and I find it incredibly invasive in my classroom when the "IPI" team comes in and starts asking questions and trying to figure out what we're doing. The idea is to catch a 10 second snapshot of interactions in the room. They aren't supposed to ask questions of disrupt the room, but since most of the observers are general education teachers, they are fascinated by my room that is so different.

Krys, Yes! I am very lucky. I am getting paid for today and tomorrow. I am going 4 hours away to a conference next week and am not getting paid. I will drive up on Tuesday and the conference is Wednesday - Friday. They are paying for the conference but I really do not want to go.

The CLASS measures the quality of interactions between the children and the teacher. There are 3 domains with multiple areas under each domain. We are training to code each area so we can evaluate our peers. We also will be evaluated. The training was actually quite interesting.

Nancy, good luck with your surgery!

I spent all day at a training for school. I will spend all day tomorrow there too. Ugh! Learning how to administer and score the CLASS

I love word searches but am really hooked on sudoku as well.

I will keep you posted on my surgery as I plan to heal quickly and recover fully!
