TUESDAYBEAR ~ Thanks for the input. I used SpringBoard a few years ago in a previous district, and it was the same - lots of group discussion and teaching kids how to do that effectively.

LILY8486 ~ Engage NY is one of many curricula that is aligned to Common Core Standards.

Is Engage NY the same as the Common Core curriculum?

I love EngageNY. I teach 1st grade, but my friends at the upper levels who are using it also love it.

The key is, your kids really need to learn group discussion rules before starting. Also, it's very tough to get to the entire curriculum, so you have to pick and choose (just like anything). But I love how it gets my kids thinking.

Luckily I do have flexibility in how I teach the curriculum. Having to start all over - again! - is overwhelming. I'm hoping that as I get into the year it'll all come easier, and I'm thankful that at least now I have a basis to work from. My previous school required us to completely develop everything on our own with very little support.

I haven't looked at the ELA curriculum but have looked at the math a little. It is amazing that they put that together. I don't live in NY anymore (going on my 20th year in Maine next month) but I think the curriculum looks good. You'll have to let us know if and how it works for you. I would hope you have some flexibility to adjust and be creative as needed.

Hi there! My school is an Expeditionary Learning school, and some of our teachers used them this past year. The 4/5 teachers really struggled with trying to get through everything and thought there was too much, and didn't know when to fit in guided reading (although in middle school that may not be an issue). It looks like they are pretty intense but they do teach the kids some important skills. This is only from what I've heard, Engage NY didn't write any curriculum for k-2.

The school where I'll be working next year has adopted the Engage NY curriculum. I have looked at it VERY briefly, and I'm wondering if any of y'all have experience using it. I used one of the Developing Core Proficiencies units last year with my sophomores at the end of the year, and largely liked it, although I didn't love the pacing.
