I can't believe how many different focuses our PD had this week. We had a day of guided reading, a new behavior management philosophy, and two days working with kids with autism (that included PECS, SmartBoard, and using assistive techonology).

Now we have a day off due to the impending storm. The kids will be there on Tuesday for the first day!

Sheila...I'm so jealous! I was hoping to get involved in that new opportunity. I hope the first meeting was as exciting and informative as I expected it to be.

I joined a Community of Practice that will be working, over the next four years, to create an alternate portfolio assessment tool to comply with state mandated testing for students with special needs. I am in Mass. There are 17 states working together on this under Race to the Top. I am excited and energized by this.

I am also taking an excel workshop starting tomorrow. I should know how to use this and am relieved to have the chance to learn it. Our district does not start until Sept. 1 with our back to school PD. Just finishing summer school this week. Looking forward to a week off...

Wishing you well, Sheila

We always start on Monday. This year our first day will be on "team building" at a local spot that is like a park, with a pool and horses and all kinds of fun stuff to do. I am not usually a fan of "team" stuff. I hope it is enjoyable.

Just found out by a letter yesterday that the school I'm assigned to this year will begin its inservice PD on THIS MONDAY -- not on Friday, as I had previously been told.

AAAACK -- what a way to start the school year!

The one thing I dislike about summer pd is that it excites you to put something new into practice, but by the time you get to some of the excitement has diminished.

A couple years ago, I took an online class in Classroom Management. This year I've been reassigned to a different building, so I'll be reviewing my notes for that class before our "official" PD and inservice days begin at the end of August.

I am not able to take any p.d. courses this summer because I am completing my internship for my C.A.G.S. as a Special Ed. Administrator. It is the greatest form of p.d., on the job training.

I went to Mount Vernon VA for one of the George Washington Teachers' Institute seminars two weeks ago - was there for 5 days

Next week I am going to a 3 day seminar dealing with ESL and using SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) and then to another one day workshop that will be talking about the new core curriculum

and the following week I am going to 2 days of core curriculum standards in county

and then it is back to work the next week!

I started the summer with 2 days bullying conference. Then I went for 2 days to a reading mastery conference. I'm trying to be proactive so I'm waiting for a program to teach me Spanish this year. I then will have a 2 day computer training for a new computer program to track standards taught in the classroom.

I took a 2 week course on Math & Science that concentrated on Earth Science. I also just finished up a 2 day SMARTBoard 3 class that taught us ways to have very detailed and interactive lessons on the SMARTBoard. Finally next week I am going to be taking a class that focuses on becoming a green certified school.

I am taking three online classes. One is for special education, the second is on minority groups, and the third is on how middle school students learn differently than elementary school students. None of mine are worth any credits so next summer I will be cramming in 6 credits in order to renew my licensing. Anyone know of any good resources for finding classes on alternative assessment and differentiation when lesson planning?

My system does this also. Don't they realize that we don't have any money. We are furloughed for 10 days. When we have to pay for hotels and conferences up front it may cause us to to struggle with our with our personal finances.

I'm not signed up for any training until a required one for our school occurs in August - Intensive Phonics. I was skeptical at first (Part 1 of the training was last year) but found it certainly had it's place as we implemented it this year. I love that it fits smoothly into both Daily 5 and Cafe - we've had the sisters present at our school and I got to attend a leadership training with them two years ago. I love their stuff and love how easy it is to make it your own.

Cafe really helps in implementing Shipleys PDSA model in terms of having your curriculum posted for all and making children part of the goal setting process.

KDSMomX3 - Be blessed that you can have the summer with your family. The time with them goes by so quickly. I loved having more time with my son during the summers and wonder if he ever understood why school took so much of my time otherwise. He is grown now and I don't feel badly about having to take classes to renew my certificate/license during the summer now.

I guess I am the teacher that is doing nothing, nada!!!! This summer is dedicated to me and my family only. Taking lots of time exercising, logging in what I eat and basically getting back on track. Also spending lots of time with my kids - they deserve it with how much I miss during the school year. Yep, sorry school, but this unpaid summer break is all about me this year.

I am very excited about it especially since I am moving into a very large classroom and I already know where I am putting our reading area. My co-teacher and I are already planning what fun seating things we can come up with for our 1st graders to read in.

We've been using responsive classroom for several years and almost all our teachers do morning meetings. We started the Daily 5 and Cafe about 3-4 yrs. ago. Some teachers are farther along than others. It works well!

I'm reading the books: The Morning Meeting, The Daily Five, and The CAFE Model
I'm taking a one day workshop at The Genesee Country Village and Museum which is an 18th Century village museum. The Museum got a grant for 50 Rochester City School teachers to take the workshop for free and then get a free field trip (including bus) for 30 students each.
I am also doing a 4 day workshop on Differentiated Instruction and planning in our building. Those are all for PD hours towards our PD stipend. Then there is a 2 day paid PD on our new K-2 Core curriculum.
Busy but I should still have plenty of time to spend with my daughter.

Yes *sigh* but hopefully when a teacher retires after this coming year, I will be getting his position. *fingers crossed* And Wisconsinites say teachers don't do anything in the summer -- ha! We have a very unpleasant battle going on here.

Taking 9 credits of geography so I can finish turning my sociology certification into a broad field social studies. Then, I get to do student teaching next fall with a brand-new AP Human Geography class. Going to the week-long Summer Institute for that. Also going to multiple trainings/focus sessions for my district. Going to 2-day training for Future Problem Solvers and probably the Summer Instructional Academy that my CESA has. The rest of my time will be spent going over my current curricula -- AP English lit and English 11. Yay! The things you do for a part-time job.

Lynn - how wonderful - just what did the university do?

HARTINGL52 - I did Project Adventure a LONG time ago but still have fond memories. I took it back to teach my 5th graders some cool science.

The science TEKS changed last year and we had almost no curriculum through cScope so I'm preparing myself for an easier 2011-12. Today I attended an inservice at the Texas Freshwater Fish Hatcheries and picked up some cool experiments, as well as having lunch made primarily from prickly pears. Next week, I'm going to a journal workshop. I do a lot of Dinah Zyke stuff and this one is directed chiefly toward science.

Gotta brag: 4 years ago, our black kids had a 13% pass rate on 5th grade science. We went into partnership with Stephen F. Austin University to address the severe need. It's paying off - this year we had a 92% pass rate and nearly half the kids had commended performance. Isn't that awesome!

It's the things like that which make it possible to soldier on even when your state legislature screws you!

I'm getting my masters, so taking Collaboration and Advocacy right now, and Inclusion class starts next Monday.

Today was our last day of school, tomorrow is our only work day. Not sure about any training this summer, but I met with a family today to set up 8 sessions for summer school/ extended school year.

I'm in my second week of summer school. I feel your pain! Actually, it's been ok. I'm teaching kdg instead of special ed. so it's a nice change.

I've done one day of EXCEED training (how to do the new paperwork for IEPs for next year) and just finished one day of a reading academy - will complete the second day tomorrow. And then I start teaching summer school - not much of a break for me. Good thing all the teachers have 3 months off in the summer! LOL

I believe in taking a positive attitude toward the world. My hope still is to leave the world a little bit better than when I got here.

I'm taking a 4 day math workshop (2 credits) that we get paid to go through because it's being put on with grant money. This is training that's coming out of N Carolina that was done with special ed teachers and special ed kids. It would benefit all kids though. I'm taking an online vocabulary class (3 credits). By the end of the summer I'll have completed my masters plus 45 credit hours. Any other classes I take won't require me to pay for graduate credit! I'm also taking an online class (just for the info) that was put together by our state autism specialist.

Hello Everyone! I'm currently taking a class about how to facilitate online learning. It is very interesting...and our group has branched into tweeting! I'm also involved in teaching our Gifted and Talented teachers (a 2 day session), and attending 2 iPad trainings. Later this month, I will be teaching the upcoming 8th graders...it's called "Jump Start".
I hope to take July off, then I'll be presenting a SMARTboard training on Aug. 2nd.
I envy the person who is going to ISTE in PA....I went to the conference, the last year it was called NECC - in Washington, DC. I learned so much! And walked so much I lost 10 pounds! :D It is a wonderful conference!

i've got lots of stuff trying to fill up my days, and might have to keep time open for my mom, but there's a week-long summer institute at the Houston holocaust museum that I might attend (but i've gotta figure out by the end of this week how my schedule'll mess with those plans). and i gotta have the money for it!

Web 2.0 - sounds like fun! It is one day face to face & then the rest of the work online. It is worth 1 semester hour. I took the Moodle class last summer & learned a lot.

New student management program training (ASPEN), which means I go back a week earlier than the teachers this year. emoticon

The joys of being an educational technologist. At least I get paid for those days!
