At the beginning of the year, I take pictures of my kiddos and every month I put their little faces in die cut borders (flowers, snowmen, etc) and build a board around them using samples of their artwork. They turn out really cute, and the kids love to see their work and their faces up on the board.

I also have difficulty changing bulletin boards often so I keep a calendar on one with "today is", "yesterday was", and "tommorow will be" cards with interactive cards to change out (students do this daily). I've also had a "Today in History" section where we read several things that happened on that day and then pick one to put on the bulletin board.

One thing we did in our room was to paint the bulletin boards, with border painted also, rather than cover with paper and/or material. We just did it but even though I believe that it is easier to ask for forgiveness than to get permission, I wouldn't recommend that to anyone unless you are absolutely sure it won't be too big of a problem. Our fire marshall has been so picky lately (all material must be fire-proof, no posters or paper within 2 feet of the ceiling) that is limits us on what we can do. Good luck!

I believe in taking a positive attitude toward the world. My hope still is to leave the world a little bit better than when I got here.

I have a small board that I allow students to help me decorate. Pull-out services can be difficult for some kids and having this board to help create gives them a feeling of belonging and of importance. Good luck!

There are so many things that are required to be posted in my school district, there's seldom room for anything else. In the coming year, I'll be going from a tiny room to a huge one, so I plan to use almost the entire room as a bulletin board of sorts. My favorite decorations are photos of my students. I take class shots on the first day to get started, then add to them as often as possible. Before long, the kids ask if they can add their own pictures, which I encourage, as long as they're school-appropriate. Since I teach high school seniors, that can, indeed, be a problem. As we put projects together for various pieces of literature, or authors, or eras, those are added.
Last year, when my principal assured me I'd be stuck with that tiny room for another decade (I'd been there that long), a couple of my students made every wall part of a mural, all parts of Wonderland, with my face on the Cheshire Cat! Just before they graduated, it was announced that the entire building was going to be painted, and all murals (many teachers had them) would be painted out. That's really sad, since the teacher who will take over the small room definitely wanted to keep these magnificent murals.

Thank you for the advice! Judy, I love the idea of separating the board for all of the students. So far, there will only be 4 in the resource room with me so that would work perfectly. There are so many great ideas!

Maybe save a part of one BB for a word wall, make it interactive with definitions in a pocket for students to match. I display students work throughout the year in the hallway. Another BB is for a math info and weather graphing.
I laminated my blue gingham material for the background of my BB.

Good Afternoon!

I also use fabric for the background. Works great! What about dividing the bulletin board up so each student has their own spot? They can put up whichever paper(s) they are most proud of....even if it is from their "regular ed." class.

I always found it hard to keep up with changing bulletin boards....so I try to make them interactive and ongoing. For example I have a "Where in the world is...." bulletin board. I will put up on the board (there is also a world map)a name of a place. They have the week to see if they can find the correct answer, fill out a form stating what they think the answer is and then I pick out of a hat. The first one that I pick that is correct gets a little reward (pen, stickers, etc)

I also have a quote of the week. I've used several from SP, but I also encourage the students to find their own quotes and share them.

I am a middle school social studies teacher and I am not good at keeping up with changing BB. These kinds of boards make it easier for me.

Good luck.

Judy

Wow! Great ideas! Thank you so much! I was thinking of "Goals of the Week" board that had the indicators we were working on that week in 'I can' statements, but I like the ideas I head here. Thank you so much.

And, I am ordering that book ASAP!

One bulletin board tip(sorry, not really a content idea!) I heard is to use fabric, not paper to cover the boards, it lasts longer and doesn't tear.

Good luck with your new job!

I would also go with a board that shows what you are working on at the moment. One board that I had that was a hit was an interactive board. There were pockets under the math problems and they had to sort the correct number into the pocket below the problem.
(Once everyone has done it a few times, it can be changed easily, keeping the same pockets in place.
Have fun! (I'm sure this could be adjusted to include language arts goals also.)

I would also suggest asking if your school has some guidelines regarding bulletin boards. My principal requires only student work and/or teaching boards.

Also, the objectives you are teaching at the moment should be the focus of your boards. I had another principal that let us keep all "teaching" boards throughout the year except one that had to be changed every month with a specific theme, depending on the season.

Good luck in your new position,

Carolina M. emoticon

If you can get this book... "20 Totally Awesome Totally Easy Language Arts Bulletin Boards" (Grades 4-8)Author: Michael Gravois ...it has great ideas! I think it's a Scholastic book.

I was thinking maybe spelling demons... lend itself to a cute display and correct spelling could be reinforced...

you could also do like homonyms, often confused words (affect, effect) depending on the reading level, you could do word families etc etc etc

Hello,

I accepted a job as an Intervention Specialist for fifth grade. I am licensed in ECE and will be working on a supplemental teaching license as I complete my online program to obtain an additional license as an IS. I will be doing full inclusion for math, but I have a pull-out program for language arts with 4-5 students each day. In my resource room, I have two bulletin boards, and I am looking for suggestions on what to do with them. In a general ed. room I have a lot of ideas, but I don't really know how I can best utilize the space of these two boards in an RR. Any suggestions?
