I fixed whole wheat thin spaghetti with shrimp in spicy home made tomato sauce. I served it with a side of fresh broccoli sauteed in olive oil and fresh garlic. Yummy!

I made a huge lobster pot full of veggie soup.
When I serve it I'll put other stuff into the bottom of the bowl, depending on what I feel like that day - potato or rice or spinach or leftover meat or more beans or spice blends, lots of variations.

Today it was over a chopped up baked potato with a little mozzarella and italian seasoning. Yum!

I've just "shaken up" my humdrum cardio routine by doing several hours of snow shoveling the old fashioned way, just me and my little shovel. Ouch! even my fingers are sore ....

So as part of my post-cardio "stretching", I'm doing a little typing and thought I'd stop by and say "HI". Hope every one is doing well in 2012! We just finished the third week of this new year. Boy did that time fly by!

That is creative as my mind gets as it is voting for a nap!
My legs and back do not want to move.
My stomach however is winning out and they are all going to have to do work - the work of finding food - All that shoveling has made me hungry again. Just had four glasses of water, rehydrated but still hungry.
Tonight's late supper - leftover salad to which I'll add some artichoke hearts AND I do believe there is some leftover berry smoothie in the refrig as well. The only major decision then becomes - which nice soothing hot herbal tea should I have afterwards? Got to love those tough decisions!

In case I don't make it back for a few days or so -
MONDAY is the Lunar New Year and therefore is also Chinese New Year, so,
Happy New Year emoticon Let's welcome the year of the Dragon!

Want more good fats in your diet and not eating fish?

Check out all the nuts & seeds. They are loaded with good fats - polyunsaturated (omega 3 etc) and monunsaturated - and very easy to add a tablespoon onto a meal. Sprinkle nuts on your salads or hot cereals, sprinkle sunflower seeds into your cold cereals, sprinkle toasted sesame seeds (or almonds) on just about any cooked veggie mix. I've also been getting pumpkin seeds from the bulk sale bins and snacking on them - I like toasting my own pumpkin seeds so I can minimize the salt. Then there are flaxseeds - I grind my own and sneak a little into zillions of dishes and home baked goods and naturally into those "mixed berry smoothies" of which I'm so fond. Yum!

Another great one is avocados. I like mashing part of an avocado and using it instead of mayo on my sandwiches/wraps.

Hi everyone. It is day 2 for me on the Mediterranean Way and I am really loving it. To be honest it's not that big a transition for me as I am a vegetarian for many years and love eating this way. I am including mayonaise in my diet for the Omega 3 + 6 since I am not eating fish.
I even started buying baguettes to put me in the mood.
How is everyone else doing?

I thought I had this thread but must have lost it along the way. I need to get back on track with my Mediterranean way of eating. Does anyone know if it is recommended for people lung diseases?
Monday I will meet with the specialist and see if he can tell me what will help if anything.
I am going to go back and check if there are any other threads I need to add. emoticon

Margaret - emoticon on such great progress in 2011. Just the meds reduction is an awesome positive.

Sophie - sounds like just in stressfullness, you had a tough year so not surprised weight was a little uncooperative. Great for year for starting the new year with resolve to obliterate it before it has a chance to settle in and get comfortable.

Me, 2011 was a tough year. Despite having that horrible allergic reaction to a vacine that limited me to very low impact exercising for approx half the year, I managed to mantain weight. Then September to November, I have no idea why but no matter what I did the partial pounds just kept creeping back. Everytime I thought I'd stopped the trend but a few weeks later it woold begin again. I have no clue why. December I was major upsets and stress and everything so that month was a disaster. Even water was making me nauseous but wasn't losing weight... Fortunately whatever was going on seems to have reversed healthwise and the upsets, well I'm dealing with it and that too is improving.
Boy am I very glad for a new year and a new start. The last week in December i started a major push to ramp exercise back up and regulate food better etc. Too early too tell for sure but - knock on wood - the tide may finally be changing. (Except for the cup of coffee today making me sick - so I'm giving up coffee for the forseeable future. Not a great loss as these days I enjoy the smell but not the taste anymore.)

emoticon
Good luck to all and may this new year bring better results than ever with whatever your personal battle/goals my be!

Sophie, you had a lot going on for 2011, but you are survivor and will get back on track. The best thing is that the your cancer free! Yeah! WooHoo! I am a 4yr breast cancer survivor and I know about the anxiety you feel while waiting for the labwork results. So celebrate and bring in the new year with a positive outlook.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

MAMA - Great job on the weight loss this year. You will lose those pesky few pounds!!

My years was okay, but could have been better. I did suffer with some health issues these past couple and should be taken care of come Feb 3rd when I have surgery. I dealt with a lot of stress with going back to schoo the first time in 12 yrs and my health issues and put back the weight I orginally lost 2 yrs ago, which really is only 10 lbs, but it came back on fast. I am hoping to drop those 10 lbs in the next 2 months and get back to where I was a couple of months ago. I would love to get off the cholesterol and high blood pressure meds I had been put on in the last year. I need to prove that I can do this for not only myself but for my doctor. BTW, if I had posted the results from my laparoscopy surgery and labwork.....I have NO cancer!!! So that was good news for the old and new year!!

Wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Dear All,

2011 was good to me. This year I managed to lose an additional 24 Ĺ lbs. Walked one 5K race and ran another. My doctor took me off my cholesterol pills and I was able to lower my blood glucose numbers so I donít have to take medication either. I did not reach my ultimate goal weight of 150, but will definitely loose those pesky 7lbs. in 2012.

How did 2011 treat you? Was it a good year? If not, what would you different for 2012?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hi all.

With all the stress of the Christmas/Holidays festivities, work, and family obligations we tend to forget about ourselves and neglect to do the things that work best for us, like healthy eating, some sort exercise and yes, rest & sleep. Lets remember to give ourselves the gift of good health while we are celebrating and helping others.

Have a great week.

Hummus is great... I'd like to make some. Everything is getting expensive so I need a great recipe. I made a big pot of turkey soup. Escarole or spinach are great in soup along with some white kidney beans.

Have a great week! Everyone in my home and those who left are all sick. I was in bed all weekend and on Monday.

I think they are only calling for a couple of inches. I got a car starter installed in my car, so my car will be toasty and the windows defrosted when I leave work. I work 2nd shift and don't like to scrape my windows late at night where I work...not the safest area. This will be nice to jump in and go!!

SOPHIEMAE2007 I know what you mean. Having leftovers is a red zone for me also. I get tempted to take small bites while I putting the food away. But at least you didn't have that much left over, that is a good thing. As far as the soda pop, I use to drink a lot also. I started eliminating little by little. One less glass of the regular and then switched to diet pop. Eventually I stopped. Now I don't even buy it, unless I am having company that I know would want it.

Now off to exercise all I ate. Hope the snow is not too bad.

I made a cheeseball for Thanksgiving. Everyone expects it so I have to make it. Usually there is plenty leftover, but this year there wasn't much left. Thank goodness for that!! I still finished it off, but at least I didn't feel so guilty eating most of it. I didn't eat a whole lot for the feast on that day and I think it was because we finally cut back on making so much food. The only thing is that I drank a lot of pop this weekend. Need to cut back on that! I did get 2 walks in with my dogs while I good and the weather was nice. It has been raining and cold the last 2 days and now they are calling for snow!! Yuck!!

Good morning all.

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with your family and friends. I had a good time, my sister arrived from NYC and it was good to see her and spend some time together. Ate more than normal but didn't do too bad. Now I am ready to finish the year with a successful note. Tell us about your weekend.

I have been focused on my school work instead of food. My eating these past couple weeks have been awful. Lots of junk food and starches. I have put on a few pounds. I can see where the "freshman 15" comes from. I need to get to eating properly and drinking lots of water instead of pop. As for exercise, I'm lucky if I get any in. I did get some walking in last week at a park and walking my dogs on another day. I also worked in my yard getting it ready for winter. I felt every muscle the next day. I used to walk to Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds just about everyday and have gotten away from it. I need to get back at it!!

This week's "creative use of leftovers" that actually was more than just a strange consumption of odds and ends (before they go bad) and actually may become a new menu item for the future:

I made tuna salad with hummus instead of mayo.
It was tasty though a little stiff to stir the first day; but, the second half of the batch was perfect on day 2.

emoticon about the foot issues. I have those and they are terrible. I always have to wear good shoes to keep from having constant pain. The best exercise for me was rolling my foot over a frozen juice can. I am told that a tennis ball also helps. I hope that you are feeling better soon.

Welcome back!

Not much going on with me except going to school and doing homework. I have my first exam coming up next week for my science class. I am doing well so far in my writing class. I am still having issues with my computer and need to get that fixed. I can at least save the powerpoint presentations onto my computer and open them that way.

Went to the foot doctor today because my foot has been really sore. I knew I had a heel spur and plantar fascitis that started a couple of years ago. Obviously wearing sandles during the summer hasn't helped issues. It has been a year since I last had problems. So he gave me a shot of cortizone and to me it feels worse that it did earlier. I forgot my water bottle that I freeze so I can ice my foot, so my sisters are going to bring it to me. they have to over to my house anyway to let my dogs out. I have been gone all day, so they are doing that for me. I just hope my foot feels better tomorrow. I also got a anti-inflammatory med to take.

Need to get back on this diet. I think I am stress eating and have gained a couple of pounds. I have felt kind of rushed with going to school and just not eating properly. I made sweet and sour zuchinni with tomatoes, onions and celery, that will be my dinner for tonight, along with some cucs, yogurt, and a peach.

Hello everyone.

Finally back home after 5 weeks in NYC. Had a wonderful time with my friends and family. Now back to work in the house, etc.etc. Cleaned out the refrigerator and trashed all the old food and restocked with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Now I will concentrate on loosing the 3 lbs. I gained (pre-SP I would've gained about 10lbs.) and try to reach my ultimate goal weight.

Soon, I will set new goals with the coming of the new season.

Hope all are having a great day.

Here is the story of my technical issues........
My professor emailed me a link to the video I needed to watch in order to do my homework. It was either that or read an article. I watched it and posted my opinionated report on the discussion board and responded to 2 other students reports. I just need to work on my draft of my abstract on the same video, which is to be concise and to the point.

Here is the funny thing. Last night something popped up on my computer and thinking it was something from the school I clicked on it. Well I guess it wasn't something from the school and clicked off of it. I then went to open a powerpoint presentation from my campus class and it wouldn't open. It said that my computer shut down Internet Explorer because there was a malicious add-on that could harm my memory. Hmmmmm... great!! I can open other windows on the internet and other powerpoints with no problem, but the ones I needed last night. Luckily I still have my old desktop or work at computer to open them and print them.

I called the geeksquad and they want to charge $199 to drop it off for fixing or if someone came to your hourse $299. Who has that kind of money. I am going to take it someplace I know of that is a little cheaper than those prices, but can wait a while since I have my old computer. Can't win for trying!!

Hi ya! I thought I posted here yesterday. Hmmm, maybe it was an air head moment and I forgot to click "post message"? Hey, it has happened before!

Kim ~ Did you get the technical difficulties worked out for your class? I hope so. I'm pretty technically savvy but if I hit a snag and don't understand/can't fix something it drives me bananas and there is nobody fast enough to fix it and calm me down! Hope your week has been less stressful!

Margaret ~ I really liked your blog post! Thank you so much for sharing.

I had a really fun day yesterday. A work friend is pregnant with her first and after she got back from the doctor yesterday she announced that she's 3 CM dialated. We had been planning on me doing her maternity portraits....like in a few weeks. But when she said that we both thought we might want to go on ahead and get them done! So we did our shoot after work yesterday, totally unplanned and I haven't really even picked up my camera (for anything other than snapshots) in sev.er.al months. But, we got some very beautiful, "lifestyle" shots...one of my favorites. EVER. I'm not going to have to do very much to them as far as touch ups go. I realize this is no good without pictures but....I haven't finished working on them yet. : )

Today, after work I have a PTO meeting and then will go to church to get my Sunday School Room cleaned out. It is so cluttered from past teachers. As I am apparently never going to give up the class....it's declutter time! After that? Home to relax!

Hi all. I just posted a blog that I want to share with my Spark friends and community. Feel free to check it out.

Kim, I am pretty sure things will work out, but understand your frustration. Once you fix all the things will go more smoothly with your school work. Best of luck to you.

Have a great day....boo hoo summer is almost over!

I am hoping this week will be less stressful than last week. I just ran into my first difficulty with my online class. We are supposed to watch a video listed and make a report on it. I cannot open the video on my new computer. It looks like it is a mp4 file. I tried downloading a free download, but I still could not open it. Great!! How am I supposed to do my homework. I emailed the professor for help. I hope she responds quickly!!

Kim ~ Woo hoo on the free vet visit and the dog's eye healing! Our dog woke me up. She was MAD! She was growling and barking at something in the field in front of our house. Could have been anything from a deer to a raccoon....but I wonder if it was something else?

I finally had a relaxing weekend! Thank you GOD in Heaven. Friday night DS had a sleep away party so we sent DD to my parent's house for the night. DH and I were going to do dinner and a movie but ended up just going to a Mexican place, locally. It's my favorite place so that worked out pretty well. I did use that as a "treat" meal and behaved myself the rest of the weekend. We had church on Sunday and other than that didn't do anything. Yay!

I hope to hear from everyone this week!

I have a dog that likes to wake up with the sunrise. She starts yipping and whining and then howling if I am not up soon enough. She drives me nuts every morning. I slept through her racket today and was having some weird dreams. I finally realized I needed to get up and get moving because I had to take my other dog to the vet at 10am. It was after 8am when I got up. I am so tired today. I did get the dog to the vet on time and thank goodness his eye has healed, otherwise it would have meant surgery. He had a ulcer on his cornea. The other good news was that they did not charge me for the visit!!

Need to work on some homework tonight that is due by tomorrow. I really would love to go home and go back to bed, but have to work!!

LOL! Kim, you cracked me up about Martha Stewart. I much prefer books/magazines to her shows. Agh! You are in the same place as we are in our house....it's called "chaos" or BTS (back to school). You'll spend the next month or so figuring out how to manage your time, then it will all gel and work well.

You earned the goodie!

Hubby and I are going to be kidless tonight. Little girl is going to over night with my parents. The big boy is going on his first spend the night with a friend....it's the other boy's b'day and I hope that goes well. OMG...I'm so excited! There will be no 5:AM squaking from the 2 year old (which she's doing because she's over tired as her mom is having difficulty getting her little butt in the bed early enough and that must be fixed). I'm going to get to work on my statement of purpose and letter of intent for grad school (as in no distractions to get that crap done!) Oh....we'll probably have some sort of date night tonight. Drive in movie and Subway for dinner sounds fine to me.

Have a nice weekend peeps!

Glad to hear everyone is doing well. I am feeling kind of exhausted today. I've had a busy week with appointments and the start of school. I already feel bad about school, because I didn't read the chapters I was supposed to read for today class. I am sure I wasn't the only one. I wasn't feeling good last night and just plain tired, so only read a few pages. I need to get organized with my time. I have a few more appointments next week, but not every day like I did this week, so it should be better. At least I did get some of my assignments done for the one class.

I know what you mean about "haricot vert"! I was reading a recipe and had to look them up. Why can't they just say green beans!! I think it was a Martha Stewart recipe and you know how she is....it's a good thing!! LOL!!

Taking it easy tonight to just relax and read a "fun" book. Will have a lot of reading to do over the weekend to catch up.

Thanks for the goodie!!

Nola ~ Woot! On no pain. I can only imagine what a relief that must be! I'm doing my best to enjoy my little ones as they grow up and to not be too sad about how fast it's going. It's hard work getting that balance but I'm mostly successful now. I'm just happy to NOT have baby fever! As much as I loved being pregnant and the newborn/1st year.....I think another kid would do me in. LOL. At least I have friends who will let me snuggle their itty bitty ones. Oops! Rambling!

Kim ~ WAY TO GO on lowering those numbers. Cholesterol meds helped...but you took/take them AND you are working hard on your nutrition and stuff. So I'm saying--it's not ALL in the medication.

Margaret ~ Here's hoping your body behaves and that you don't have to go back on medication!

Busy here. Today we are being treated to lunch at a very nice/gourmet restaurant. I hope I like it......I like simple. I mean really. I could live off pb&j sandwiches and this place doesn't even call green beans "green beans" but rather "haricot vert". Unsophisticated me had to google that one LOL. I finally signed my son up for soccer and tryouts are on Saturday. He seems to be doing well in school and has had : ) every day in conduct. My daughter has gone from crying the first 2.5 days (of school), to sniffling with bribes of lipgloss for not crying, to being excited about going to play with her "fends" (friends) to now, singing joyfully about playing with her friends and her daddy picking her up later. She'll be 3 in December and is seriously funny!

Have a great day!

SOPHIEMAE2007 that is such great news. All the good work you did is paying off. Congratulations.

I did the same for a year and just this month my doctor took me off the cholesteral pills for two months to see if my body produces cholestral on its own. If it does he'll the prescribe the pills again. Hopefully did doesn't.

Keep doing what you are doing.

Margaret

I finally got a copy of my bloodwork to see where my cholesterol levels are at along with my triglycerides.

One year ago -
Total cholesterol was 235
HDL was 65
LDL was 150
Triglycerides were 100

Today
Total Cholesterol is 163
HDL is 75
LDL is 69
Triglycerides are 97

Big drop in numbers!!! I have cut out a lot of fat, but also I am on cholesterol medicine.

Haley that sounds like so much fun. I remember my kids being that young and playing slip and slide in the back yard. Enjoy as they grow up so fast.
I had the epidural yesterday and I think it is going to help. For the first time in two years there is no pain running down my right leg. emoticon
I receive the Johns Hopkins news letter and it suggested the right diet for RA is good fats such as olive oil, high fiber foods and more fish. Sound familiar? emoticon

Hi Kim and other MW Team members!

Kim you are going to do great in school!

We have had a busy week with my son's birthday, his party and other stuff. Not exercising like I should....not at all this week. Eating is fine though so that's going to do for now. Starting next week we should be slower (please God!) We had a homemade slip and slide--I used a big, blue tarp, soaped it down with baby shampoo, turned on the sprinklers AND put out tubs of water and water guns. They had a blast! DS was baptised on Sunday as well. That was one proud mama moment for me! He's afraid of "deep" water but he got dunked and didn't bat an eye. :)

I apologize for not being around as much and hope that the rest of the team is just finishig up a fun summer. Hope to hear from you all soon!

I will be heading over to the university tomorrow to pick up my id card and probably stand in line, again, to get a question answered regarding some excess financial aid that I requested to be transferred to the id card (also used as a debit card). I requested the transfer on Friday and then another because I felt like it may not have been enough for books on the same day. The 2nd transfer went through, but not the first. I called yesterday and they told me it should go through overnight. Well it didn't from what I could see online. I did get a confirmation email saying that it would be transferred. This is so aggrevating, because I was hoping to get my books tomorrow if it went through. I got another email from the university regarding my online class and how to set that up. I had to laugh, because it said "to make sure you get your books early!" LOL! Sure, I would if I could!!

Instead of a pool, I live right on Lake Erie. I have swam in it once this year and have been out since. Most likely the algea has grown and it is very green out in the area we go. I have returned home with a bright pink bathing suit looking green. It is a bad algea too, so I should be out in it, but everyone is out there. I'll be lucky if I get out there again this year. It is hard because every other weekend I am on call and the other weekends, I am usually busy doing something else...like helping my mom.

Kim, I am so excited for you to start classes! I know it's always nerve wrecking for me to anticipate things BUT once the anticipated event/class/whatever gets here MUCH better! As soon as I grow another six or eight hours in a day I plan to update my paperwork for grad school and get that rolling. I had been accepted and this close to starting once before and then found out that I was pregnant with baby #2 so I put it off. Now with all the crapola at work I just really feel like I'm being pulled to grad school....whether I like it or not! : )

Time in the pool DOES sound nice! We have neighbors AND friends with one and I think it's been like 2 years since I was in the thing.

Today is my son's birthday. He is 7 years old. I took cupcakes to class (this is the second day of school for him) and that was fun. First impressions are that we have been blessed with a great teacher (again) this year! So tonight we are having pizza for supper with cupcakes for dessert. The good news is it's definately 1 cupcake per person (b'day boy will have my frosting because I hate that kind) and as long as I limit myself to 2 pieces of pizza my nutrition will not be completely horrid today. I'll be thrilled if I can get in a walk.
