There are so many good REAL foods. It seems a shame that we have to struggle to find them while we are surrounded by FAUX FOODS and manufactured FOOD PRODUCTS. emoticon emoticon emoticon

There is a lot of what you all have listed that I can't eat...I have Crohn's disease. I don't do any dairy products. My meat I get from a person who raises HER own beef and pork so I do know what is in it!! I try to buy my veggies fresh and in the summer I buy from the farmer's market.

I don't think I will try shirataki either. Also silken tofu. I like firm tofu, and have no problems with soy crumbles or other vegetarian items (even if I am a meatatarian!) Not a big fan of rutabegas but never say never. My husband gets sick at the smell of cooking okra, but my son grew some in our back yard (hubby and son bought interesting looking veggie plants, didn't look at labels) and I found a recipe for okra fritters in everyday food magazine, and everyone in the family loved them! No slime at all. Even hubby came back for more!

I'll eat pretty much anything, but I'm not interested in trying Shirataki Noodles. I know they aren't a calorie free food, but to have such low calories makes me feel like they aren't real food.

I'm not in a hurry to try liver, but I did have (and enjoy) steak and kidney pie last year, so I won't rule it out!

I also use soy instead of dairy.

I think some people avoid it because of allergies, and/or because of hormonal concerns, something to do with estrogen levels.

I usually avoid fast foods and cook almost all of our meals from scratch to avoid those mystery additives.

Several people mentioned that soy products should be avoided at all costs! Why?

I am lactose intolerant and soy milk is a good milk substitute for me.

I avoid eating fast foods. I can make it at home and eat twice as much for the same calories. I also worked at a restaurant that made whipped butter. It was made with real butter and a little milk too. I think that is the norm, so I wouldn't assume otherwise.

pine nuts - I'm allergic

okra - watched my dad eat it when I was very young and I still flinch at watching the slime drip!! Made a BIG impression on me! LOL

other than those I tend to avoid anything highly processed - the longer the list of unpronounceable ingredients, the further away from it I want to be!

I am allergic to soy protein and tree nuts, so I always read food labels and never buy anything with those ingredients. I also buy organic meats so I don't ingest antibiotics and hormones. I also avoid the "dirty 10" fruits and vegetables, buying the organic versions instead.

I'm with THESHRINKINGDIVA on the shirataki noodles.

Also, I keep trying beets but haven't found a way that they don't taste beet-y.

Very spicy food, kiwi, tripe, sweetbreads, uni (sea urchin)

I used to have okra on my list, but I discovered that in Vietnamese food it isn't cooked into sliminess the way it is in gumbo and I'll eat it.

Artificial sweeteners, though when you're diabetic as my husband is, they are better for him than sugar(?)
Can any one give me the low down on artificial sweeteners as to which might be the best for us? We use Splenda, have used Equal in the past.

There's a difference between 1.) what I'm eating now and 2.) what I plan to be eating once my diet is cleaned up. Right now I still eat meat. I don't plan to keep doing that. It is highly processed-both before the animal is slaughtered and after. I choose processed foods, most of the time, that have only words that I recognize-not chemicals I can't pronounce...but, you know, I'm just not there yet...that land of perfect eating (hehe). I don't drink diet soda and I used to drink it a lot, until I read an article that said it was linked to brain lesions. I like stuff that is bad for me--that's reality. I like baloney and hot dogs and baked goods of any kind, and ice cream--all with lots of chemicals in them. I don't think I can do these things in moderation, so I don't avoid them out of some noble purpose. I do it out of self-preservation.

@ GARDENQE2 - I've worked in restaurant kitchens, too, and we served "whipped butter." However, ours was real butter whipped with a little bit of skim milk and kept in the sub-zero fridge to keep it solid. Actually, our whipped butter was better (if you can call any butter better) for you than the unadulterated kind. Please don't paint all restaurants with the same negative brush.

Anything with the word "diet" in the name/title. I'm sorry, but the word diet to me has a very negative connotation. And, most items with the word "diet" are more expensive than their normal equivalants. Besides, I'd rather have a little bit of "real" food than larger amounts of so-called "diet" foods.

Tofu Shirataki Noodles - tried them once, HATED them. Even after a LOT of rinsing they still smelled like fish and tasted like rubber bands.

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS - these things are TERRIBLE for you! They have proven addictive in lab settings, INCREASE food cravings, DECREASE satiety when added to food (so you have to eat more to feel satisfied), desensitize your taste buds to sweet foods, and give me MAJOR physiacal side effects from migraine headaches and nausea to just feeling spacy and disconnected.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is wrong with soy? I don't eat it but I know a lot of people that do.

I don't eat soy, nor transfats, and I don't eat corn syrup. I rarely eat artificial sweeteners.

I'm trying to get away from artificial food.

There honestly are so many products we produce here that we should never eat. I teach nutrition for young children, so that is a passion of mine. The Capri Sun type drinks and lunchables make me sick. I don't eat anything pre-packaged really. I think soda is dangerous, too.

Since I have both thyroid and kidney problems: I don't eat any products that contain
Soy..........

Just as a sidenote, I never buy anything anymore without reading the ingredients. We
are being bombarded with hidden sodium and as you said , additives we can't even
pronounce, and people wonder why that cancer is epidemic..............

If you always do what you've always done,
You'll always be who you've always been!!!!!!

"Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage
is the quiet voice at the
end of the day saying "I
will try again tomorrow!"

I've got a problem with those zero-calorie noodles. It sounds very unnatural. And since food is supposed to be fuel for our bodies I don't quite see the point.

I don't eat anything that says FAT FREE. If you read the ingredients, it's full of stuff that's worst then fat.

Pillsbury Grands Cinnabon Cinnamon Roll with Icing

Each one contains 310 calories ... 2g fat ... 2 1/2g trans fat ... 6 tsp sugar!

Made with partially hydrogenated oils, which is bad for you!

I just watched Jamie Oliver's video. He makes a strong case against corporate "food products" with their multiple flavor-enhancers and preservatives.

I worked in a large, upscale restaurant for a few years, and saw some eye-opening things in that kitchen as well.

One thing I would never eat is the fluffy "whipped butter" served in restaurants. It is made by whipping a low-quality vegetable shortening with artificial coloring and flavoring. ( It gives me indigestion to just think about it).

Another thing I would never eat is fat-free salad dressing. Have you ever read the ingredient panel? It sounds like the supply list for a college chemistry lab!

Sparkpeoples' mission is to make the world healthier one person at a time. What do you suggest that we never, NEVER eat?

Esther!
