We have the Wii Fit. I am not sure about 2 players... I know on some things like the running all you need is another remote. We have never tried 2 player. I also bought EA active 2. I prefer it over the WII Fit. WII fit is fun- it has fun games.. but I don't feel like I get a great workout when I play it. EA Active on the other hand you can feel the burn. I am almost done with the 9 week program that is included in it and it has been great. My 2 year even loves to do it with us.

My problem is getting my husband to go along with us because he is naturally thin no matter what he eats so he sees no need to exercise and he works a very physical job so he gets plenty of exercise 8 hours a day. When I ask him to go for a walk with me he laughs. I really wish he would be more supportive. He also eats tons of junk food right in front of my face and expects me not to notice.

We're getting a fence right as we speak so I can envision more running around in the backyard this spring and summer. In fact I'm in the market for a brand new soccer or kick ball. Should be fun.

Question about the Wii Fit - what do you do? Is it cardio or just strength moves? If you did it with two players would you need to buy another balance board? It's quite expensive, but I really want it. We already have the Wii, just need the game and the accessories.

Wow you guys have some great ideas. I am going to get my husband to play more games with my kids and I. I am so proud of him. Today he did EA Active Sports 2. My 2 1/2 year old "worked out" with him. Too cute. She likes to mimic me when I work out. I cannot wait til spring so we can get outside and enjoy walking and biking, and geocaching. MN winters are brutal.

I agree with the playground type exercises....kick ball, jumping jacks, stretching, etc. is good.

You could probably find a toddler seat or trailer to hook onto your bike for your toddler. Little one will also need a helmet but would probably love to go riding with everyone.

When my son was 2 or 3 we would work on my balance ball (actually he was on his hopper ball--but he'd mimick all the moves I made) he also did yoga and some other videos with me.

Playground is great but then wrestling is good too.

dbailey ~ my hubby and yours sound very similar. I am pleased to report though, that after I started my fitness stuff up again he has started and within a WEEK has lost 20 pounds.
So the best advice I can give you is to just set the example for him. Sure ask him to go with you but you actually getting out there, being healthy and letting him see the results screams loudly.

Also if you are responsible for cooking/shopping. Just stop (if you are) purchasing "junkie" food and make sure to have healthy snacks on hand. Then if you are also cooking healthfully that will help. He will complain (as mine did) I'm sure but....he will survive.

Here are some of the things that we have done together over the years (my kids are 5 & 7 now- we started "working out" together when they were 2 & 4)

1) Walking (which you're doing already!)
2) The playground! Climbing, swinging, running, jumping... it's play for them and a workout for Mommy! (an added bonus when we can find a park with an outdoor workout station!)
3) Yoga! With DVD's or using their yoga pretzels (link at the bottom)
4) Tai Chi (with DVD's)
5) Wii Fit
6) Physical "challenges" in the backyard (tag, races, sprinting, who can jump the highest, farthest, etc...)
7) Local races (I sign them up for the 1 mile fun runs whenever I do a 5K- we started this when they were 4 & 6)
8) Body weight exercises inside: sit ups, push ups, jumping jacks, steps, etc...

These are really great suggestions! I have a son that is 2 and a half and with the weather getting colder I find him in front of the TV and me in front of the computer more and more! I feel so guilty, not only are neither of us getting activity but we are also losing that BONDING time together. My husband works night so its hard to include him in a lot of things. I love the suggestions about playing the simple games we did when we were younger and also the one about the minute to win it site! I will definitely have to look at it, it may be a lil too hard for him but I know he will have fun trying! Great topic! Also, I have found that when I workout by son LOVES to mimic me, its great activity for him, and I find myself enjoying my workouts much more with my lil workout buddy! emoticon

I told the kids not to let me sit during their soccer & basketball practices. Make sure I'm walking around the field/court instead. They love being able to tell Mom to do something!

For those who have toddlers, just chasing them around and playing is good exercise together. My daughter is 2 and she keeps me moving.

my children are grown and now it is the grandchildren and great grandchildren that need to be pushed to do something over and beyond the call of the latest game on the the game system . one only wants to play war games and kill all the things that come across his line of vision on his game . .. the great outdoors calls come and join me but it finds them stuck in front of the television . Scary .

I have two boys, ages 4 1/2 and 6. We go on walks and sometimes they ride their bikes while I walk and we hike. A local park has a fitness challenge trail so we have done that too. I also design a game we call obstacle course that we do at the playground while I step up and down the slide steps kinda like an aerobics step class while they run the obstacle course, go down the slide, go through the tunnel, give me 15 jumping jacks, etc. and they "compete to see if they can top their time.

I have a suggestion for you. Go to the Minute to win it website and look at the activites, there are a ton that use things around the house to create games. My favorites are: putting a belt thru a empty tissue box and fill with pingpong balls, put it on your backside and they have to jump until they get all them out. taking cheap pedometers and attach to sweat bands, put one on each arm and leg and jump in place or swing around and set timer and see who gets the most numbers added up in a minute. taking two rolls of cheap party streamer, hold one piece in each hand and wave your arms around and unwind them. I love these games, the kids love doing them, and you laugh and laugh! Your heart rate gets up, you work up a sweat, heck i nearly peed my pants laughing. It can be done inside, it isn't complicated and its cheap! there are a ton of activities in there! Good luck!

My kids are 2 and 4. Now that it's getting colder I have a hard time finding active things for us to do TOGETHER. Sometimes, we go in the basement while I run on the treadmill, and the kids play ... but it's not the quality time that we need. I like the ideas about duck duck goose. I hadn't thought about those kind of games.

We have made every Sunday family fitness day. This has included the local rec centre pool, bowling, hiking, the local play farm and many other activities. We have been having better quality family time. The whole family has been enjoying the day. My kids are 3, 7 and 9.

I took my kids to the Halloween parade in my hometown and we walked to and from the parade route! They had a blast. It was fun to walk around my old stomping grounds and we ended up going a whole two miles by the time we got back to my parents house! They did pretty good for a 3 and 4 year old and never complained once.

My 4yr old girl loves to do workout videos with me, especially dancing, belly dancing in particular. I play tennis w/my MIL and we have some extra raquets and as long as there isn't anyone on the other court we give them a few balls and they are more than happy to chase their own balls around!

Just running in the backyard kicking a ball to eachother, playing tag or jump rope contests. I bought a mini trampoline at a sporting goods store that my 2, 5 and 7yr old all take turns bouncing on. Or just a fun game of simon says. Even if some kids are too little, they will still have fun trying to mimic the older kids! Hope that helps!

DBailey - my kids are older too - 19 and 16. My husband plays a pick up game of soccer about once per week, but we have both slowed down.

What about biking? Would he refuse? Is there a restaurant you could walk to on a "date night"? Make it a regular thing?

It seems like baby steps just to get him moving would be good. And sneaking changes in to what you eat could also help.

Find something you'd both like to do and put it on a calendar - regularly. Though you say its a battle so I'm not sure how that would work! I invite my hubby every time I can to see if he wants to walk with me. Maybe just keep asking or request that he join you twice a week with what you do?

When my kids were little, we'd play in the rain (as long as it was warm). Find a hill and let the rain run into their boots, run up the hill and back down getting drenched. It was a lot of fun.

Now I have to count walks around a campus (college) and biking. Though your 17 month old is too young, biking might be good for the other two, while you push the youngest in a stroller?

I have three kids aged 5, 3, and 17 months. I know many people are in the same boat as I am. I have been counting my walks with any of the kids in the stroller as family fitness, and we have done one hike as a whole family, but I am looking for more ideas for us to do as a family that is fitness type stuff. Suggestions?
