It pretty much snowed hard all day today, not a good night to go out for New Years Eve! I am getting ready to finish up chores then make supper, kind of a quiet day today.

The yarn I ordered to make myself some warm hats came today. I donít like wearing wool on my head so I got some soft washable yarn instead. I have had a hat I really liked for a couple of years, not those all over tight pull on hats that keep sliding up off your head, but one with a nice head band that stays in place and looser knit upper part. I wear it out but not in the barn since it is off white. The original hat has a big real fur Pom Pom that snaps on the top, I took that off immediately since it was heavy and pulled the hat uncomfortably. I was amazed to find a pattern for what is called a copy cat C.C. Beanie, although a beanie is supposed to be tight on the head and this is not. Just need to hunt down my size 7 circular needles and get knitting!

Wishing all of you a great New Year!

Overcast and gloomy here most off The day, but so far there is no accumulation of anything is falling. Not looking forward to snow, but I would prefer that to freezing rain.

It is amazing how much trouble some cats can get themselves in, and others never do. Mischief is always getting in trouble, I have accidentally locked her into the back of the truck too, I do tend to check now if she is in the area, but I never saw her get in the car, and she is the same color as the upholstery.

Today I was finally able to close the chapter on the meat. My neighbor drove down, and we got there and loaded up fairly quickly. There was a new guy on the dock which made it slower then usual, but not bad. There were 6 different orders, they are very organized down there and each order has the number of bags on it plus the name, order number and what is in the bag. All together it was over 60 bags, the truck was a short bed so it was tight. I put mine and my brothers in the back of the car and came in to have lunch, not warm enough out there to defrost anything! I will have to go out soon and carry the 20 bags to the freezer though!

I was trying to do baking today when my neighbor called to tell me he and Tom were coming over to pick up the bee hive for the winter. I reluctantly finished up my cookie my dough and got dressed to go outside. No gloves anywhere, then I remembered I left them in the car which I was going to move forward in the barn after I took out some grain, and forgot to move the car. I went out only to find my car all locked up. You canít lock the car if the keys are in the ignition either by the key button or by pushing the button down. I peered in the car and there was Mischief snoozing in the drivers seat, she apparently slipped in the car while I was moving the oats. It is hard to believe she could hit the lock button on the armrest, but that is the only thing that could have happened. I frantically looked up locksmiths in the area, but I guess there arenít any. Finally I calmed down and thought to call Geico, I have towing and roadside service with My Geico policy, so I called...I could tell the women thought I was nuts, she asked me if the keys were in the ignition, I said yes I was going to move the car after unloading it, but the cat locked it before I could. Yup another crazy, and on Christmas Eve, fortunately there is a guy in Medway that does breaking and entering and was on the Geico list so it only took him about 30 minutes to get here. Mischief shot out of the car, and took off to downstairs, and he said the Geico person was wondering if there really was a cat in my car lol. I guess they do get calls because Dogs lock the car, but this is the first cat lockout. That wasted a lot of my baking time, but there is always tomorrow! My younger brother texted me and said nobody would believe that story! My neighbor, Judy said only you would get into something like that, she is sure I am a disaster waiting to happen!

I never liked fruitcake until I had homemade, I particularly like the addition of figs to this fruitcake. However it is getting hard to find figs, it takes the light figs not the dark mission figs. I usually let them sit wrapped with sherry soaked cloth for a month or so, checking the cloths weekly. It makes a delicious moist cake. I used to make my older brother one for Christmas every year until about 20 years ago. Back then the cost was over $50 to make one fruitcake, probably a lot more today if not for the bulk pails of candied fruit you can get now, instead of $6 for 4 oz it is $21 for 10 lbs!

I put up a Christmas tree today, I havenít done that for a lot of years. Calliope thinks I am nuts, she was sitting on the back of the recliner next to the tree just staring at it tonight lol. This is a lot later then I used to get a tree up but it has been so busy. I am going to bake some Christmas Sugar cookies, and gingerbread men tomorrow, plus if I have time some soft anise frosted cookies. Havenít made cookies in a while either. Usually I am down to my brothers but this year I didnít have someone to do chores.

I am missing Dundee a lot, I wasnít thinking this morning and called him when I called Tiger. :(

The fruitcake sounds delicious, Barb. I like fruitcake and my mother used to make a really good one. In fact she made my wedding cake which was all fruitcake. I didn't find out until later that my husband did not like fruitcake--I have wondered if he liked the one my mother made which was a little different than the dry commercial fruitcake that brought up us statement that he didn't like them.

Barb--I am sorry you lost your cat Dundee. He did have a long life, but regardless of their age they are missed.

So sorry for the loss of your furry friend. They provide us with so much comfort.

My grandmother used to make fruitcake, as did my mother. I never developed a taste for it. I feel like I am missing out! ha ha

It seems like Christmas sure came in a rush, still didnít get my tree up but maybe today. I promised to make fruitcakes for my neighbor, he bought 10 lb pails of citron, lemon peel, orange peel and cherries plus 5 lbs of figs. I made two in angel food cake pans from an old family recipe, Fiiggy fruitcake. I threw one on the scale 8 lb fruitcake, hope he really loves fruitcake! Today I will complete the other two fruitcakes and get them all ready for soaking.

My meat wonít be ready to pick up until next Saturday, kind of a bummer since I wanted to have a small rib eye roast for Christmas, but better timing for me rather then spending a whole day picking up and delivering meat!

Just got my car back last night, he installed an O2 sensor, but it seems like it didnít do much for the check engine light that is still on. I havenít driven it far yet to see if the problem with it not throttling up would come back when it is warm.

I sadly lost my big old cat, Dundee, Tuesday, he lived a good long life at 17, but I am going to miss his constant presence a lot.

Most of our snow is gone as well, and that is good that it has cleared a lot of the trouble spots in the roof valleys. I agree, I don't usually like rain in the winter, but when it clears out a lot of ice it can be a good thing.

I will probably get my tree out today. I use a small table top artificial tree that stays decorated from year to year so it is not hard. I picked up as well as delivered gifts to some family members so need the tree to put the gifts under. Tabitha received a gift from my sister and had it out of the bag and playing with it with in minutes of it coming into the house. Why am I not surprised. She has had it out of the bag a few times playing with it so guess that is a fun gift for her.

I have to admit I am not a fan of rain in the winter, but I liked the last rain for getting rid of snow on the roofs and yard. Plus the banks in the courtyard were way out into the yard and high, now they are just little I was getting worried about room to plow and now there is all kinds of room! I think This weekend will be a good time for a barn cleaning out, I need to move around some cows and canít until I get some stuff cleaned up!

I actually bought a tree this week, havenít put one up for years, but this year I wonít be going to MA for Christmas, so I thought I would put up a tree for my Christmas! I will miss seeming family but no miss the 6+ hour drive down and back, kind of takes a whole extra day at each end when you spend it traveling! Today I picked up a undecorated wreath for my door, I have all kinds of decorations and thought it would be fun, I think I will put lights on it!

I am down to mostly to bare driveway in most areas, and I put ashes on any place that looks icy. Guess we are supposed to have rain again on Saturday, so maybe the snow in the fields will go as well.

The rain certainly took the snow away, there are still drifts and banks but my driveway is back down to the gravel!

I got Apache in the barn before the rain, of course she has a nice shelter out there and the only one getting wet would have been me as I took her hay and water!

Yesterday I did some cleaning up in the pastures, got the corral panels that were in the pasture moved outside and the gates hooked back up. There were 3 gates still open, so I trudged through the drifts and got then closed and a wire fixed. The lambs did an incredible amount of damage to the gates, with all their wool they are not stopped by an electric fence unless they learn early and this batch didnít. There are about a dozen gate handles missing on the bottom two wire levels all over the various pastures. At least it is secure in the upper central pasture to let animals out this winter.

After I went up to breed a cow for my neighbor I caught kittens and got cleaned up to go to Bangor with 4 of them going to two new homes. The new owners were quite excited to find kittens and came all the way from Portland. We met at Walmart in the parking lot, and I was glad to see they came prepared with a secure place to take them home with a blanket and toys for the ride, although the kittens were tired and sleeping before the exchange. On the way down they purred most of the way. I admit I will miss them, this batch of kittens wormed their way into my heart and it didnít help that the runt of the litter that I was going to keep died yesterday morning. There seemed to be no reason for the death other then she was still very small even though she was a very good eater. She would great me on the steps every day at chore time just putting her whole body into purring and sit up on her hind legs wanting to be picked up. I have seen sudden deaths in runts like that before, but I will miss her a lot.

I am going down to secure the side door in the barn in a few minutes with plastic and insulation to tighten up the stable some, something I do every year. Then pack eggs for market tomorrow!

It is currently raining here. Guess that is better than getting more snow. We do not have much snow on the ground, and perhaps the rain will wash it away.

Barb, it is wonderful that you have someone helping you with the pellets. An act of kindness like that restores my faith in people.

The basket have been stored for another year. The craft fair went well despite the fact that very little sleep was gotten Friday night. My daughter came to help me with the craft fair as she usually does and was planning to sleep on the daybed downstairs. That would have been no problem except for the fact that I was planning to sleep upstairs and my dog wanted to keep a watchful eye on both of us. She was upstairs with me but every time I was almost asleep she would start begging to go out (she figured I would take her downstairs and she could check on my daughter in the process). Needless to say we both slept very well Saturday night.

Wow we got a lot more then 3-4Ē of snow up here, hard to tell sometimes because of the blowing but it was knee deep in the courtyard with some higher drifts.

It has been a busy time, I had to get corral panels moved in the deep snow so the steers and lambs could be loaded. This ended up so late because all the new regulations put in place are forcing my local slaughter house to give up processing domestic animals. They want him to install all ceramic tiles, doors that seal and some new walls, about $125,000 worth. So he is going to do wild game only now. That is a big blow for this area. So I had to take my animals to Charleston instead, long drive to an out of the way place and way more expensive plus they are a rude argumentative bunch down there. So instead of all this getting done in October the best day I could get was December 6th.

Loading the animals went really fast and easy with lots of help plus the chute built from the barn to the trailer. We left the chute in place so we could accomplish a cow swap that was supposed to happen last winter, so Suzy went up to the farm I breed cows and I brought home my angus cow and a angus calf on Sunday. That didnít go as planned here because we didnít think she would be hard to handle, but she was all nerved up from her friends being missing, but we got it done in the end.

I also rearranged the garage so the tractor can fit in for the winter, long over due project, nothing worse then having to clean off a tractor of snow and jumping on a snow covered seat, burr!

Today I have a little cleaning up to do in Apacheís pen, and add bedding then she will come in from her shelter for the winter, it is getting too hard to get hay and water out to her now, she does love to be out there with room to run though.

I have had to hold off getting pellets and fuel this year because of the change in date for the animal processing, I need to have quite a lot of cash to pick up the meat up front and checks people give me take 3 business days to clear before my bank will allow me to use the money. So I have been sweating running out of pellets, or having my fuel company run out so they are not available at the end of the month when I can finally get them. So after all the cow loading Friday I was setting reading for a while when Bates fuel called to see if I could take delivery of two tons of pellets at 8:30 Saturday. I was a little taken aback and said did I order pellets? I donít think I would forget that! She said no these are all paid for, but she was not allowed to tell me who it is. So I donít have to stress about the pellet situation anymore thanks so a very kind anonymous donor. Wow, what a very nice thing to do for someone, I really canít figure out who did it, there may be 3-4 suspects, but it seems unlikely.

It is a nice day here with some sun. I have cleaned up the rest of my driveway (after the plow guy was here) and since we did not get any rain with our snow it was easy to snowblow it with my little electric blower. We only had about 3-4 inches here. I am thankful for this snowblower which makes it easier, but it still leaves me feeling well exercised.

Today was freezing rain and ice at my house early this morning, Didn't have to go to work today, so that was great!.
I made some date squares, took some to my Dad, and taking most of the rest to a pot luck dinner for our book club Thursday.
I have been able to enjoy some knitting today after getting the ice off of my car.
Dinner is leftover 12 bean soup, with cornbread.
I'm grateful to be home all day today!

Went out to get my mail a few minutes ago, and it was snowing very hard so that visibility was limited. Don't think we are getting hit as hard as many parts of the state here in Franklin County, but we are getting more than I need to deal with when it stops snowing.

Travel safe everyone. I had to go to an appointment this morning just as it started snowing, and the roads were not good when I was ready to return home. (Some hadn't been treated at all yet.) and I was glad I didn't have far to go.

You are so right, Sandy, in that we face many challenges this month. I always gain weight during December simply because I do a lot of baking. I enjoy the baking, but wish I could be more disciplined to give all but a few tastes away.

Will be busy this week getting ready for my last craft fair. This is the one for which I do the table floor plan. That was dropped off this morning at the University where the fair is held, so now need to concentrate on making product to sell.

Good morning,

It is a beautiful sunny day in my neck of the woods. It feels easy and optimistic to keep goals in mind and work towards accomplishing them. That can change in an instant when a neighbor brings over some home made treat, or your coworker brings in dish of fudge, or perhaps your customers share their baking bounty with you!

Personally I like to take a balanced approach. A taste or nibble is not going to hurt but they can add up quickly! So while I continue to focus on my goals, I'm determined to be mindful of any extra treats in my environment.

Hope you all have a great weekend!
