Rachelle - I put a lot of dyed reed into my baskets, and yes, I stencil or paint designs on a few of them as well. I will try to remember this winter when I have more time (hopefully) to take pictures and post some of my baskets to my Spark Page.

Hard to be believe August will be over in 3 days. I love fall, but always hate to see summer go.
We had a wonderful time with our GDs over the weekend. Emily loved the Animal Park. Her favorite part of the day was feeding the bear. The food dispenser fills a cup inside of the pen and you stomp on a pedal to project it out. On Sunday we took both girls to the Discovery Museum in Augusta. They had the best time playing in all of the areas, including the grocery store and restaurant. Their favorite was playing banker ad using the vacuum tube to send deposits back and forth.
We’re holding our breath with the estate. The time allowed for appeals runs out on Thursday. We are also finishing up final steps for selling the house. Fingers crossed we won’t see another hold up there.
The next few days will be hot. Stay cool friends!

Eileen- I bet he Fairy Walk was neat. Sound like something the little GDs would like. I would love to see pictures of your baskets. I have a dear friend who makes them and guided me through the creation of a few. Each is a beautiful, useful piece of art. We dyed some of our reed, and stenciled patterns on ours.

Ortatk- I used to have bee balm in my garden. You’ve reminded me how much I loved to see the hummingbirds visit those plants. I do have a feeder on my deck. There were no visitors for a while this summer, but they seem to be back again.

Another hot day today. I mowed lawn with the riding mower this morning, but the rest with the push mower is going to wait until it is cooler.

Hope everyone is able to stay cool today.

Hi everyone.

To answer your question Sandy, my basket are not native American in origin and are made using reed instead of the brown ash as those would be. I am sure some of mine to have some elements in them that reflect that heritage, but I have a huge variety of styles. Many of my basket are my own design or at least I have varied patterns that I loosely followed. Hopefully at some point I will have time to post some of the pictures of my baskets to my Spark Page, but there is one picture of me on there that has me holding one of my large prize winning baskets.

Have a great day.

Hi to all readers and Hikersan.
Perennials are funny plants I once had an equal amount of red and purple bee balm, then the red seemed to fade in numbers. I started moving plants to a part of my border garden that I was going to only have red bee balm and they have thrived. I must say that some of my flowers must have flown in the winds as they have planted themselves in so many different places.

I used to plant vegetables but I was feeding a wood chuck and his family so I now have only flowers. The wood chuck family stayed for a few seasons without vegetables but now seem to have moved on.

Hoping everyone is able to enjoy this wonderful weather.

On my way to my new normal.

Good Morning Mainers!

ORTATK - I love red bee balm, have had it in the past, but it no longer exists. I think I have found a source though, so maybe next year! I bet your is beautiful.

TCDRAGOM54 - Love GD time. We took ours to the Wildlife park many years ago, it is a nice place to go. I'm sure you will have a special time, making memories! Also glad your estate issues are turning around to be in your favor.

Eileen - I would love to see some of your baskets. Are yours traditional Native American?

Pat - always nice to have you stop by and say hello. Are you still at Amato's? I think of you whenever I enjoy my favor Original Sandwich!

GOLDENRODFARM - You have been quiet, I suspect you are very busy as summers are on a farm in Maine. Hope all is well with you!

Have a great day everyone!

Have been "on the road" for the last couple of days. Yesterday I went to a friends house for lunch and then we did a "fairy walk" that is near her home. It is a trail through the woods where another classmate has set up whimsical "fairy" house along this trail made out of found outs. A fun walk to do.

Today I did some warehouse shopping for staples that I needed.
Hope everyone is enjoying the summer weather.

Going out in this beautiful day. We are being blessed with such a wonderful summer. My red bee balm has bloomed several times and they call to the humming birds. I enjoy the birds so much.

Have a great weekend.

Enjoying this refreshing summer day. My littlest GD is coming for the weekend. Her big sister is going on a sleepover, so we'll have some Emily time! On the docket is a visit to the Wildlife Park in Gray followed by some mini golf. Should be a fun day.

Hope everyone is enjoying these last few days of August.

Wow! It’s been a while since I checked in. I am playing catch-up today with my teams. It has been really crazy around here with lots of emotional ups and downs. However, the light at the end of the tunnel is finally starting to get a little larger. I am enjoying all of the posts for the Amazing Race and plan to do a better job of posting this week. I have taken some time to read through all the posts over the days I missed, and it looks like many are doing well through this break. Sending thoughts and prayers to those who are facing difficult times.

We’ve had a major breakthrough with the estate. I will spare you all of the details, but thanks to my astute lawyer, we were able to get a hearing for everything and on 8/8 I spent the day in court and approximately 2 hours on the witness stand. Needless to say I was exhausted, but the effort paid off. The judge ruled in my favor on all aspects of the petitions, leaving the path open for me to finally complete the sale of the estate and get a little closer to closure. I won’t breathe easy until both sales are complete, but we’re moving forward. Many thanks to those who have been so supportive as I plow through this overwhelming process. It has created a huge chasm between the brothers and sisters. Not sure if it will heal with time or not-we’ll see. The next challenge will be my daughter’s custody case, which could go either way. We can only pray that the judge will see through the bull and see her ex as the abuser he truly is.

There have been some fun moments through the month. I have had a few beach dates with friends and took my first ferry ride to the islands off Portland. My DD’s partner was racing in the lobster boat races, so we headed to Long Island to watch the competition. Both her partner and his son won their races. It was a great day! Hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

Eileen- Glad to hear your wrist is getting better. I share your challenges with stress eating. This mess with the estate has really wreaked havoc with staying on track. I will be so glad when we have a resolution.

Ortatk- How are things with your kitchen. While it is exciting to complete home improvements, I agree, it can be very stressful! How was your Florida trip? I didn’t see any questionable news stories, and it looks like you made it back safely. You are definitely a brave soul heading out on your own. Sounds like we all share an issue with stress eating! I can’t have certain trigger foods in my house, as I can’t seem to stop once I start. Staying in control is a constant goal.

Piggy1- Hi there. Nice to see you!

Today is rather overcast and I suspect we will get rain later. We had some rain during the night and I am so glad that we are now getting a bit more rain. We were experiencing very dry--drought--conditions earlier this summer. My raised vegetable beds are now looking healthier with my having to water them. I have had my first tomatoes, summer squash and zucchini whic always makes me happy.

Thanks for all you positive thoughts. I am back in Maine and enjoying everything this state has to offer. The best thing about Maine (although to many to mention) is the people. I lived in Massachusetts for 35 years and I am so happy to have been able to retire back here in my home state.

Congratulations ORTATAK. You deserve to pat yourself on the back for driving in Florida, for the fact that the seat belt fit, and also for being able to do as much walking in the airport as necessary. Sparkpeople does make such a difference in our lives.

Report on adventure. I did it. I got on the plane and the seat belt fit (it did not always - before SparkPeople) There was quite a bit of walking in the airport (again thanks to SP I can easily walk. I rented a car and I drove to my destination. Wow, I got lost once or twice, but I had recently got a tracphone with GPS and found my way. I am so pleased with my progress.

I never thought I would drive in Florida, one time when I was riding with my son in Florida I commented on the traffic and he said, "Mom, the only place with traffic like Maine is in Maine." He drives all over the country so I took is knowledge as fact.

Off on my second day, my yard needs some weeding.

On my way to my new normal.

August 13, I am on an adventure. I have never driven in Florida. Oh somewhat of a lie, I drove my daughter in law once in Cape Coral. She was frightened. But this will be my first time driving from the airport to our home. If you see news footage of an old lady crying on the side of a Florida state road it may be me. WIsh me luck.

It is a gorgeous Sunday, but quite hot and humid. I have managed to pick my wax beans (for the first time this season) and the blueberries that continue to ripen--got about a pint. I should mow the lawn at least with the riding mower today, but time will tell if the lawn has dried out enough from yesterday's rain. There was a slight breeze while I was picking the blueberries, so if that is still present later, I probably will mow.

Hope everyone is enjoying this great day.

Hello all,

I think life in general is a work in progress, until we are no longer . . .

Water first, before snacking is a great plan, and one that I continue to work on. It can help.

It is nice to see people acknowledge successes other than the scale! Success comes in so many ways. Always great when we recognize them and give ourselves credit for them.

Well done team!

ORTATK- There is no easy solution to my stress eating. I will do really well for a short time, and then something happens and I go on the "See Food Diet". A lot of times I am not even hungry and I will eat until I feel overfull. I am trying to do better during August, and am trying to remember that sometimes I am thirsty not hungry. If I just drink a glass of water it sometimes helps, but I have to remember to try to water before I reach for food.

We are getting some much needed rain today. In fact the dog and I just missed getting caught in a heavy downpour on our morning walk. When it started out it was raining very gently, so we went all the way out into the field, etc. Just as we reached the back door to return inside, the drops were very big. By the time I reached the kitchen the sky had opened up and we would have been drenched. The dog has not asked to go out since then and it is afternoon now. On a nice day she would have been out again mid morning.

Enjoy the weekend everyone.

I am responding to Eileen on her posting 8/3. I am just like you. I can not have some foods in my home as I can not always control the portions. I eat more with stress and I have found recently that I also celebrate with food. I have cravings when I complete a difficult project I guess it is a reward.

I am a work in progress. I will never give up. This week I lowered my glucose (no really good but better) and my weight stayed the same.

HIKERSAN - I try to resist buying the things that I have trouble eating only a normal serving, but every once in a while I do get them. I haven't found a happy solution to some of my cravings. I have found that if I have foods I crave--like dark chocolate--in the house, I can usually just eat what would be a normal amount before the craving builds to "eat the whole bag" proportions. It is only when I am so stressed that I go out of control. Still a work in progress.

I am on the same train as you folks with stress eating. Especially at the end of the day. So far, the only way I have been able to beat it is to not have the foods in the house that I like to snack on. If I can't control portion sizes, then I try not to buy the foods. Even if the foods are relatively healthy, like peanuts, or popcorn. Portion control is everything. I am still a work in progress, suspect that will be the case for a long time!

ORTATK - It sounds like your reasons for eating are the same as mine. Yes, my stress eating usually involves something sweet. Yes, knowledge is power, but in my case I have to keep reminding myself not to eat in such situations. At lot of the time, I do not listen to myself.
Hope August is a better month for me.

August has arrived so quickly. I have been doing home repairs that started this Spring. I hope that my kitchen floor will be completed August 9th. I will finish painted my kitchen cupboards before that ( I am almost done). Then I will be able to put my home together again. Now what does this have to do with eating - everything. I have found that I eat when I am stressed and I celebrate with food when I am happy. I have found that stress eating begins with sugar cravings where as happy eating can be anything (today fresh pineapple). This knowledge is powerful. I will use it to keep me on track for this month.

Happy August.

With this new month I am going to try to get back on track. I was way off in July and ended up gaining weight--probably because I couldn't do everything I wanted since my wrist is still healing--and I eat in such situations. Hopefully I will do better this month since I can at least mow my lawns now.

Wow! August already. Thanks you Sandy for keeping this site up to date!

My current goal has been to try to stay on track as I continue to address some very stressful family challenges. To date, I have managed to maintain and meet that goal. For August, I really want to start seeing the scale go down. I have joined a class a Silver Sneakers and am hopeful this will provide a spark.

Wishing everyone a wonderful day. Enjoy this beautiful Maine summer!

Good morning fellow Sparkers!

Time sure does fly, especially in the summer in Maine! Here we are in August already. How was your month of July? Did you reach some goals? Did you maintain your successes? Or perhaps you made some new goals and plans for attaining them.

Please share with us, we love to cheer you on, or help pick you up if you fall!

Keep on Sparking!
