The Sodium wasn't a big challenge for the meal plans I'm on so I added the variety of veggies. I told a few friends about it and we came up with some good veggies that required a little bit of effort to cook or steam and fulfilled this changed. I had a long week and really tried to keep up with the cardio and managed the rest.

Woohoo!! I did it! One month of challenges done!!

Although I've not logged in all my activities, I've done VERY well on all of Feb's challenges...Having the courage to "dump some stress" has made the most long-term impact, - - - I am SO Grateful for this challenge and the encouragement from the team's postings.
emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
PS To lower our sodium counts, I usually cook from scratch, and also---the biggest help---I search out the canned veggies (like tomatoes for our spaghetti sauce) that say "No Salt Added"...so each can I add adds food volume and dilutes the sodium count per serving. It's a real recipe saver!

Sodium for this week was well under control and just a little low for 1 of the 7 days because it was a big salad day with roasted veggies.

So much sodium in even the most innocent foods. I make a great low cal, low fat vegetable soup. Everyone in the family loves it. This week I really looked at how much sodium is in the canned tomatoes I usually buy. Wow! It reminded me of just how hard it is to be vigilant about sodium.

Although I quit posting daily, I've done most of the challenge. I only took one day off this month for cardio, so I have at least 30 minutes on 26 days in February. I've averaged about an hour a day. I've done SparkPeople generated strength training on 23 days so far this month.

For sodium, today I was at 2,160 mg. I went over on Tuesday and Friday, but Monday I only had about 800. I averaged less than 2300 per day for the week, so I think that is pretty good. I have been working to bring my sodium down, so I didn't do anything I wasn't already doing.

I don't always get the relaxation, but most days I do. So I feel pretty good about this challenge.

My sodium has been fine all week. But I leave tomorrow for 11 days in Texas --- I am hoping that I can keep the weight at bay! Eating out a lot is going to be a real challenge.
I will check in on my return.

I did better this week with sodium. The main helps were not eating out and cookkng more things from scratch. Last night, my family went out to dinner to celebrate my daughter's birthday, and boy did I taste the salt in the food after having eaten less of it all week! I'm going to continue working on reducing my sodium as a fast track goal.

I have worked very hard this week to keep my sodium under control. And I did emoticon . But I had to watch every thing I ate, check every can and package to do so. I'm convinced I need to get more frozen vegetable with no salt added, make my own beans without salt, eat brown rice without salt etc. But I now know I can do it!

Keeping sodium down can be a fulltime job emoticon . Today was errand day and I now know that I can have grilled chicken breast sandwich from Subway of a regular roast beef from Arbys. Knew I was going to be higher than normal on salt so I got some fat free ham to try with my new Deli flat bread. I never read the food label on the ham figuring it won't be that bad. Boy was I wrong, It is just plain baked ham and 1 slice with the flat bread almost pushed me over on sodium today. I am glad I checked it out on the food tracker because I was going to use two slices of ham like I used to and that put me over by 150 gm. Won't be eating to many ham sandwiches. emoticon

Had a real eye-opener this month.
Thought I was doing good eating the progresso light soups for lunch - a whole can is depending upon the variety 120 - 160 calories plus a little cause it's 18 oz. which is slightly more than 2 servings - BUT if you eat the whole can, which I was/am - it's 2/3 of your daily sodium. When these cans are done - I'm not buying any more. I thought I found a great way to keep the fat and calories down AND be satisfied at lunch.

What helped me to realize was going on the South Side soup walk. An event in Pittsburgh that raises money for the food pantry, gets people out walking in the community and tasting samples of soup from about 23 restaurants. They were mostly all good. And well seasoned, which I'm sure included a good bit of salt. I was 2 pounds over after that - and I walked all day - 10 blocks up and 10 blocks back. Rather than 'freaking out' I thought about it and realized it may have been (was) water retention. I will continue to do this event, because it is fun and for a good cause - but the rest of that day and in general - I'm watching the soups and going to try to make more of my own - so I have control.
I'm working too hard to look like I'm not because of water retention plus - it's just not good to keep the sodium level that high!
Nancy - I'm glad you had this challenge - it got me to think and focus a little differently. Thanks!
Frances

Bodyweight exercises in the morning and spin class in the evening for my cardio.

Sodium today was under 500 because I mostly ate plain salads, some raw veggies and apples. Did have pork shoulder, but it was cooked without salt.

Day 3 Completed. 10 min. Core, 45 min. Cardio. Went over in my Choloestrol today. Rest of nutrition good. I love Coach Nicole's Fit, Firm and Fired up DVD. It is certainly getting me back on track and motivated.

My sodium intake was very good today. I just need to cut the cholestrol. Egg substitues are on the shopping list.

Week four article on the spices was perfect. I have started my husband working with me and he likes the new spices I have been using. I was looking for something else to put together to change the taste on the green beans. I am going use a few combinations at dinner time. We are loving the fresh vegetables and I don't think I can take him back to frozen:)2 more pounds lost.

Sodium Intake 1,852 mg.
I cooked stir fry tonight. I added no Soy sauce in the cooking process.
I added 1T of Reduced Sodium Soy Sauce to my plate at the table. I am sure I would have added more, If I had not been watching my sodium intake. Good challenge. Thanks.

I'm working on the veggie challenge, because the salt challenge is a major issue for me, and I'm already working on another major change: (no caffein in the afternoon). I've already given up sugar so salt maybe next one of these days. The veggie challenge hasn't been bad this week. Have done green, purple, blue, and red so far.

So far, most of this week I've been under the recommended amount of sodium, however whenever I eat a sandwich with processed meat, I'm always over. Usually not by much, but over nonthe less. Anyway, I will probably never be able to get off my blood pressure medication because it seems to run in my family. I will, however, continue to try.

This has been a great challenge for all of us.

I did pretty good today. I managed to get 90 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of strength exercises and I did pretty well in the eating department. I only had 1480 mg of salt. However, I was 9 calories over for the day.

I never really worried about my salt intake but I never knew how much I was taking in everyday. I never put extra salt on my food so I thought it wasn't a problem for me but boy, was I wrong. Thanks for this challenge to help me out!!

Sodium 1631
The only changes I made in my menu for today was to measure Soy Sauce and Texas Pet Hot sauce to get Sodium amounts.
The Pork I ate for Lunch was cooked on Sunday and I had not measured that sodium.
I am pleased with today's totals.

I was suprised by the amount that is in veggies and even the reduced ones. We like chili in the winter so I got a real shock when I used the recipe calculator. I make a big batch and then vacuum seal in jars and freeze. I know I needed to start paring down the sodium, I took the pork portion from the meat blend, used reduced sodium kidney beans, and no salt added tomato products. Then I added 1/4 teaspoon salt to the bottom of the pan when cooking the meat blend. And then add 1/2 teaspoon to 3/4 to a 5 1/2 quart crockpot as the chili simmers. The next time I make chili I am going to try using dry beans to start and see if that reduces the sodium more or stays the same...dried are a lot cheaper than the Bush's reduced sodium ones. A one cup serving right now is about 600mg sodium.

I always track my sodium! However I'm convinced as soon as you add a moderate amount of carbs any amount of cheese---------you're over. I usually am okay 4-5 days/wk. FYI never eat out if you want to stay in range!

Thanks for the quick reply. I've started the mammoth job of editing all my foods to include sodium info. It will probably take me weeks, but I'll get there.

I found a website with a g to mg calculator.

I hope others find it useful.

In the week four challenge forum are links to the SparkPeople articles on the subject.

I don't get too meticulous on watching every fraction of salt, but know that .05 grams of salt equals 50 mg. which is significant when counting milligrams.

HAPPY SPARKING!

I agree. I'm trying to enter sodium details on all my foods.

If something has 0.05g sodium and 0.1g salt, do I ignore the salt measurement and just enter the sodium?

If a recipe says it has 0.24g salt, do I divide that by 2 to get the sodium measurement?

Are there any articles on SparkPeople about tracking sodium that would help?

Thank you for any help on this. I'm sure there must be some geniuses out there!

I'm not sure how to track the sodium when I eat at home (grandmas meals). Im thinking that since she can't have much sodium, i'll be ok. (but i'm still not sure emoticon )

I try real hard to have mostly vegetables (for lunch and dinner), fruits (for all my snacks), oatmeal (ever morning for breakfast), fish (for lunch and dinner).

The soymilk I drink has 120 mg, and original oatmeal has 0mg =)

I'm usually good about watching my sodium and reading labels. I am always buying the lowest sodium choices at the grocery store, and choose fresh or frozen over canned or processed whenever possible. What does me in is too much eating out. Last week this was my downfall. Too busy and away from home to cook. My sodium was too high all week. I could feel the water retension. This week will be better!
