Thanks GA8625 for your fave restaurants!

I heard alot of great reviews about Gracias Madre. My co-worker who is a devout vegetarian just raves about this place. I am hoping to pop in later this month. Is anyone interested in a group meeting and checking out new spots?
Let me know!

I wanted to read thru before posting since I was sure my faves would all be listed.... Shocked!
First, for me healthy = organic, sustainable and locally sourced.
I live in the City above Dolores Park so between Mission, Noe and Castro, so lots of fantastic options... my go-tos
1. CHOW on Church (3+ locations)- organic, sustainable and a wide variety of foods from pot roast to fish tacos and save room for amazing deserts.
2. GRACIAS MADRE - Organic, Vegan Mexican food. So delish, even my carnivore ex loved it. Handmade blue sprouted corn tortillas with fillings like mushrooms, butternut squash, grilled asparagus, cashew cheese - Yum! Their Gingerale is hand pressed and life changing!
3.

Just decided there are too many to mention so I'll be back to post more later!

Warm regards, Gloria

There's just too many to count in SF! But I guess the place I've been hankering for time and time again is Cioppino at Anchor bar in Castro! I think its probably the best Cioppino I've encountered bar none!

My brother is coming to town this weekend and he wants to go out to dinner, he is a diabetic and on dialysis so I was looking for a healthy place to go. We have a Sweet Tomato here in Santa Clara and I was thinking of taking there. That way I get my low cal meal and he will hopefully pick healthy stuff to eat.

Yay! Millenium, eh? I will have to look them up. What is that one restaurant... Its called ananda fuara or something, in SF. I have seen it for years, it is in the dowtown area,by Market street. It is supposed to be totally vegetarian or vegan. I need to just go in there and eat finally. I have gone in to use the restroom and it is a nice setting. :)

Millenium is really yummy for a nice vegan dinner out

For a little more casual, I like Herbivore (although it's been a while since I've been there), there's one in the Mission (maybe on Mission or Valencia?) and one in Berkeley on Shattuck. Vegan & usually pretty tasty.

As for ice cream, I live a few blocks from Tucker's Ice Cream here in Alameda - wow!

Hi Mimi, You might want to check out China Experience. It's on Foothill Blvd. in Hayward. Their food and service is pretty good and they offer brown rice as an option.

I'm so envious of everyone who can eat at healthy places in SF! I feel like I'm mostly surrounded by chain restaurants and lots of small, unhealthy ones. I'm sure there's some ones with healthy choices so I need to start searching harder for them. I have a Sweet Tomatoes and a Healthy Choice pretty close to me, but I HATE going to buffets. I always go in there with the best intentions, but when I see all this yummy stuff that I've already basically paid to eat, lol, it's hard to turn down.

BEYOURBESTFREND, I'll definitely need to look up Avocado Freddy's since Hayward is pretty close to me.

I like Sweet Tomatoes as well, but Fresh Choice does have some advantages. First, they buy a lot of their produce locally, and the indicate where it is from on the placards. Second, they include caloric information for nearly everything.

Mitchell's Ice Cream is very good. They have a lot of interesting seasonal flavors like pumpkin and eggnog. Definitely not the healthiest food option. :)

Not healthy, but as a treat, the BEST ice cream is Mitchell's.

I remember my dad would take me there when I was little and it was the highlight of my week!

I love Sweet Tomatoes too and agree that it's better than Fresh Choice. Those places are great but the baked goods make it easy to go crazy for me.

I love El Pollo Loco, it's pretty healthy for fast food. Jack in the Box's Fajita Pita is also a fav.

As a guilty pleasure, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Zachary's Pizza. I also love going to Fenton's for ice cream too.

Does anyone dare to list their favorite not-exactly-the-healthiest restaurants?

I am LOVING The Cheese Board Cooperative on Shattuck in Berkeley, where they make just one gourmet pizza type per day, but it is fresh and delicious without fail. It's just not exactly low cal and low fat. There's no escaping the cheese!

What about you?

I've been frequenting Sweet Tomatoes a lot recently. Much much better than Fresh Choice, in food quality, selection and price.

The other Cafe Gratitude is on Shattuck in Berkeley.

My faves for general tastiness because the food is so fresh and prepared simply include:

Long Life Vegie House (University Ave near campus, Berkeley) Yay to brown rice options!

Taqueria Viva Mexico (Central Ave. near Park St., Alameda) The fish tacos are the best!

Plutos!!!

The one I always go to is on 7th and Irving, but I believe they also have down by the wharf.

Delicious salads that you can pack with veggies, super delicious and healthy chicken sandwiches. It's fantastic!! Luckily it's my indulgence restaurant anyway, so I don't feel bad when I keep going and going and going.

Mariachi's on Valencia. They can do brown rice on the burrito. I know it is not for everyone but I really heart on the brown rice.

I must confess I'm an omnivore, although I do eat about eighty percent vegetarian. I will certainly try the veg Mexican place. Another Sparker and I ate at Cafe Gratitudes in San Francisco once and found the food on the bland side for us, but of course to each his own.

Being a food and wine writer/consultant, I eat out a lot. For me it's not especially the restaurant that makes for healthful dining as much as it is what I select from the menu and the portion size I eat. I've learned to love that doggy bag and the delight of having another meal of food I enjoy on hand at home.

I've recently been introduced to Fish in Sausalito and had high-quality ingredients well executed.

I think omnivores, vegetarians, and even vegans can have unhealthy diets unless they pay attention. I still eat everything I used to but in smaller portions--and some things not as frequently. Fortunately I've never liked the taste of fast or junk food. But I'm living evidence even "good" foods can make you fat if you eat too much and don't exercise enough.

For me it's important to know I can have anything I want, as long as I manage and balance my nutrients. The brat in me would immediately pig out if I told her there was something she couldn't have. That's one of the things I love about Spark; I'm learning a way to eat I can stick with for the rest of my life.

I'll look forward to reading about more of everyone's favorites.

TGIF! Have a great weekend everyone.

I love Cafe Gratitude! I've been to one in SF I believe there are two SF locations, but they have yummy raw vegan food. I love their smoothies, and don't feel guilty after eating there!
