I was diagnosed with UC in April 2004. In February that year my boyfriend (now husband) deployed to Iraq. I've always had problems with diarrhea and nausea, but never thought about anything like IBD. Then in March 2004 I started bleeding. I did some research online and made an appointment. I pretty much had to tell him that I think I have IBD. I got a colonoscopy done and he told me it's ulcerative colitis. He prescribed me Pentasa and a foam enema. Two months later I went back for a follow-up colonoscopy. This time he told me it looks like Crohn's. Great. I still didn't get any cortizone but my bleeding stopped. The cramps and pain stayed though. In 2005 my husband and I got married. Then I got pregnant. After that I still didn't do much better so I went to a new doctor who referred me to a Gastroenterologist. He found out that I have UC and also a chronic gastritis. I had to take cortizone for more than 6 months. I gained some weight and looking at my face in the mirror made me wanna cry. At least I was getting better though.
In 2007 my husband got deployed again. This time I worked out alot and tried to eat more organic and less processed food. I was doing good until we moved to the States at the end of 2008. My son and I were staying with my husbands aunt in Florida for three months. Her kitchen was way too small for me to cook in and so we went out for dinner alot or got fast food. That for sure didn't do me any good because in February 2009 I had a flare up. Nothing really helped until we moved to Fort Knox and I finally got to see a Gastroenterologist again. After a colonocopy he told me that they can't really say if I have UC or Crohn's. I take 2400 mg Asacol a day and also had to take enemas for 14 days. Since August I am pretty much problem free. I actually can each everything except for too much of spicy food, but even tolerate Sauerkraut which always made me problems.
I am glad to have an understanding and caring partner that helps me to make it through the hard times that sometimes come with my disease. Other people are not that understanding.

HI Md, Welcome to the team. I'm sure some of the others will know a lot more than I do. And, we're all so individual in what we can tolerate. For me, I have to stay away from veggies in the cabbage family, ie, cabbage, broccholi, cauliflower and brussel sprouts. I can eat most of the squashes, but they must be cooked mushy. When I can tolerate V8 juice, that's a great way to get in several servings of vegetables. I can handle applesauce I can eat tangerines, but avoid the white fibrous parts. Cooked fruit seems to be much easier for me. I may peel an apple, slice it, and munch on it off and on all day. If I eat it all at once, I have a problem! Often I handle the fruit in yogurt fine. I will add carrots to chicken soup and cook them very soft. I hope this helps. It's been trial and error for me and from what I've learned, we are all so very different in what we tolerate. Good luck to you!

Kody, according to my doctors, the blood test can only show that we have an autoimmune disease, but not which one. Crohn's specifically is diagnosed by the granulomas on the intestines. These are what they refer to as "skip lesions" for one will appear, then an area of healthy bowel, then another lesion, another area of healthy.
Diet is such a tricky thing with Crohn's. There is no one diet that fits all. The best thing to do is keep a food journal and discover what you can and cannot tolerate. AS long as you get your nutrients in, vegetarianism is okay. Most of us have trouble absorbing enough nutrients and with a vegetarian diet, you just have to be sure you're getting it all in. I wish I could be more helpful; I know just how you feel. I had a disease in which food was killing me, yet no one could tell me what to do. Good luck to you and God bless.
Linda

So I figured I would stop in and see how everyone is doing. In a nutshell, my Crohn's flared up in January, now on Humira, off Imuran, got pregnant as soon as I was in remission :) then miscarried :(...and gained 15 lbs through all of this. I am actually doing better then I thought I would be... My husband started spark two weeks ago and I have decided that I think I need to start counting again and tracking, its too easy to say that is only so and so calories....so here I am back..

I am not sure if I qualify as a team member, but I sure could use some help. My husband was recently diagnosed with Crones. After the "phone call" confirming it from the doc there has been no follow up they put him on an antiinflamotory and that is all. As far as we know they are not expecting him in to see anyone. I called the office and all i was asked was "Does he want to talk to the doctor, we can certainly set up a consultation. I need to know if this is normal and also I have gone on every internet site I see looking for advice there is just too many and i am not sure what I am looking for. Can you all help.

I belong to other threads on sparkpeople that is how I found your group.

Hi everyone in the IBD Team, I'm very happy to have found a IBD Team here on Sparkpeople. I suffer from UC and Ankylosing spondylitis so I can't eat everything, can't exercise as much as I should and have to take some meds.
People often think that everyone with IBD has to be skinny. Well, I'm not. I'm overwight and I want to change that and become able to move with less pain.

Since I last posted I have again been told that my Crohns has flared up in the remaining 6 inches of my colon and in spots through out my small intestine. Within the remaining 6 inches I have a stricture that again is causing a partial blockage. They want to do a second bowel dilation but are unable to until the Crohns has gone back into remission. They really do not want to take the rest of the large bowel yet because of the Crohns in the small bowel. So now it's just a waiting game on more steroids. I have been trying to find a good web site that will tell me foods I can eat because I am having to avoid so many foods that cause problems for both the crohns and the stricture. If you know of anywhere on the web I can find this information It would be very much appreciated. emoticon

EMCGOURA, I have family with Crohn's. I have actually been told it is inherited and sometimes skips a generation. My grandpa's sister has Crohn's. My brother has Colitis. And I have just been diagnosed with and placed on Lialda for Crohn's. I am praying neither of my daughter's come down with it. It is something I wouldn't wish on anyone. My brother was 19 and almost died from the Colitis, which is how they discovered he had it. The symptoms hit hard and all at once, rendering him dehydrated and placed in the hospital for a week. He is now 25 and had an ileostomy last year so he could live a normal life. The meds didn't work for him.

I saw your story and I can totally relate. When I was an infant 4 of my sibling were taken from my birth mother and adopted out. 2 of us stayed in Canada and 2 of us were raised in the States. I was also hit aggressivly with Crohns when I was 19. I was but on large doses of Prednisone for over twelve years. My doctors were also curious about my birth family so I put my name in an adoption registar. I quickly was able to locate my birth mother and 5 out of six of my sibling. What I found out was shocking. My older sister had crohns but passed away due to complications (perforation of the bowel cause by bowel obstructions) caused by her Crohns Disease at the age of 19. I also found out that my two brother each adopted out to separate families in the states had an aggressive form of Crohns as well. My doctors have been very careful with me and I have been on disability since 1990. I was not able to be put on Remecade because of the bowel strictures I have. Being on prednisone all these years has caused a 4' 8" ninety pound person to gain weight to a total of 207 pounds. I am down to 138 pounds and still counting now they have taken me off and put on imuran. I was just wondering if any of our group members have family with IBD.

Hi Kartmann...I am with you in that they thought it was colitis, which my brother has, but then Thursday's colonoscopy revealed that it may actually be Chrons. A bit different since it isn't IBS, but I am in the same boat with supplement information...what works, what doesn't? I know we are all different but it is nice to hear what others have tried and see the different results. I find out the 6th what my treatment will be.

Good luck.

Hi everyone. I am pretty new to sparkpeople. My doctor recommended it. I was just diagnosed with IBS. They thought it was colitis but after a colonoscopy yesterday they said it is probably just IBS. I was told to eat a high fiber diet and drink lots of water which I hate plain water. I also would like to lose 60 pounds more pounds. So far I have lost 20 pounds but I am pretty much stuck now. I see a lot of information about supplements but am not sure if any of them are a good idea. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I love V8 Fusion and V8 Smoothies, but due to the tomatoe base, I can't drink it. It causes my Chrons Colitis to really flare and causes me much misery.

It is really hard when you can't eat the very things that are supposed to be good for you due to acid content or dairy content. Is there anyone else who is so restricted? No tomoto, no dairy, no spicy food, no acidy food....leaves lettuce and apples?

The doctors are still testing me for diffrent things, but I'm curious if any of you are seeing IBS as a stummbling block to weight loss. Hello to one and all! I'm new to spark people and so far I really like what I see! It took me a week or more to figure out the nutrition trackers etc. but now that I've got that down I figured I'd try a post.
So anyways, I'm a 38yr. old wife and mother from Western N.Y. Been diagnosed with Crohns for over 16 years! Finally trying to get it together and have been going to Weight Watchers meetings for 12 weeks now. So far I'm down 28.4pds. and have at least 60 more to go.
Hope everyone is having a great day!

I am delighted to announce that someone has stepped forward to take the leadership of this team!!! Your new leader is ATHENSGIRL04 and I will let her introduce herself.

This is a great team and I've really enjoyed being a part of it. However, my health (or lack thereof!) demands that I step back.

Best of luck to each and every one of you as you struggle to reach a healthy weight in the daunting face of inflammatory Bowel Disease.

I know you will all groan in sympathy when I tell you that I'm in the midst of colonoscopy prep today emoticon
The prep, however, is a new one for me -- Moviprep -- and I'll try to report back to the group in the next couple of days as to whether it's any improvement over the gallon of GoLytely!

Please welcome ATHENSGIRL04 and support her as your new leader.

Thanks and hugs to all of you.

Carolyn

I need someone to PLEASE step forward and take leadership of this team.

Please understand -- this is URGENT!!!!!! My health has gone into a real nosedive here and -- quite simply -- I'm not gonna be around to do this much longer. The past 6 weeks have seen me in and out of the hospital. I had to go get a PICC line put in today in preparation for tomorrow's ERCP and Thursday's colonoscopy. I have extensive blood clots in all the veins leading to the liver and your organs can't survive without blood supply!

We've known this was coming and we're quite ready for it (at total peace! Thanks be to God!), but I really need to get this leadership thing settled ASAP.

Please!!!! I need your help!!

I'm on this group because my son has Crohn's, not me and I don't post very often. But you've all got my curiosity up. What is the problems with seeds? Is it any kind of seeds? (Like those on strawberries?) Do they cause pain? Where? I've been having some "issues" myself lately and was thinking along the lines of gallbladder or diverticulitis. Unfortunately, we don't have insurance so I'm avoiding the doctor as long as a I can. The pain was so severe this last time though, I almost headed to the ER.

Hi there

First Magda, not all doctors are mean or bad. Some even have Crohn's and know where you've been. ;)

Pugmom, I love the hamburgers too but the seeds are a nightmare. So I replaced regular hamburger buns with english muffins (white or whole wheat depending on how I am doing). My whole family like them now!

I can eat corn on the cob but brocoli is a no no. Everyone has their own Crohn.

I am on Humira too after a severe allergic reaction to remicade. When the nurses administered it it stung like mad. But since I do my own now, I have found the trick so it doesn't hurt at all: very slow injections. It takes 3 min instead of 30 sec, but pain-free.

Before you go on this medication make sure your fridge will never fail. My medication is paid for by the french government, so when my fridge failed they replaced the last injection left... You know the price tag on that stuff???

Right there w/ you pugmom. Always LOVED corn.

And what I hate this most? Why do restaurants have to have their burgers w/ sesame seed buns?!!

Ya corn doesn't agree with me all the time either. It usually comes out when I have a bm, but it doesn't cause me to have D. I've been pretty stable for almost 2.5 yrs.

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing. I did a big no-no earlier this week. I have been feeling really good lately with no issues from my guts and then I went and grilled out and had corn on the cobb. I was lucky it only put me out of commission for 2 days instead of a welcome visit to the hospital (that's happened before). Does everyone have issues with foods like corn? I really love it and it used to be one of my favorite vegis and I hate it that I am not supposed to eat it.

I'm too blessed to be stressed and too smart to let food run my life.

Hi I am new t the group and to SP. I was diagnosed with Crohns in 1998 and have what my doctors call a very aggressive, severe form of the disease. I am on Humira and Asacol. I use to be on Remicade but it stopped working as well as it once did. I was on it for years.

I was put on a VERY LARGE dose of prednisone when I was first diagnosed. The doctor did not really know what he was doing and put me on 80mg of pred a day for almost 3 months! In that short time I gained 120 pounds and almost had a stroke. I've been trying to lose the pred weight ever since but its been hard.

I am trying to get into the 170's for my wedding at the end of March.

Nice to be here and meet all of you!

Hi Chris! We're all here for you. I agree it's nice to have other people to chat with that are going through the same things. My doctor tried me on Aciphex a few years ago for my crohn's. It's actually used for ulcers, but he thought he'd give it a try. For some reason this seems to work pretty well for me. And as meds are expensive with no insurance, Aciphex is almost the same as OTC Pepcid. You might want to give it a try. It certainly can't hurt. It helps keep some of the acidity down.

Hi, Chris! Welcome....it is certainly true that Crohn's presents its own extra challenges to losing weight. Partly because what's recommended for "normal" people for healthy eating is the opposite of what's recommended for us!

One thing I can say is, keep the fiber low, regardless of the present wisdom that says high fiber is good for you. It's NOT good for Crohn's that's for sure. And do try to stick to a regular schedule, even if you have to set alarms to do it. That's definitely better for you, Crohn's or no Crohn's. Eat small amounts at regular intervals rather than not eating for a long time then eating too much.

We're all here for you.....

Hi, I'm Chris. I've been diagnosed with Crohn's only for the last 6 years or so, before then I really thought everyone dealt with the same problems but just were too polite to say anything about them.

I've taken Asacol in the past and it's helped, but have been off it for about 4 years, mainly because the cost of the medication is too expensive without insurance help.

I'm now trying to lose weight, I've never been one that's lost weight because of my Crohn's no matter how bad it got. And without the medication I just deal with it. I'm now working on adjusting my eating habits to more healthy habits and starting to work out. Though I agree with the comment earlier, we need more port-a-potties around!

I'm finding it hard to really get a good set of eating habits because of the issues with foods causing mini flares for me and also, since Crohn's has left me with no apetite, I forget to eat meals and snacks when I'm supposed to if I'm busy.

Sorry if that's too much, but just wanted to introduce myself and say a little bit about myself. I'm hoping that with people to talk to and with about the same issues I deal with that it will make it a little easier to do what I need to to lose the weight. Mainly good knowing I'm not alone dealing with it. ^_^

I'm lucky; I do crunches & it doesn't bother me. I haven't had kids but I know that the "tummy pouch" is always tough to work on. Wish I weighed 135 though! Sigh....that was about 25 pounds back....

Well, I wouldn't call 135 fat unless you're 2 feet tall, but I get where you're coming from. My Crohn's is confined to the lower intestine so I don't lose weight no matter how bad the flare.

But by all means sue the doctor; I'm sure he deserves it for something! I hate doctors!

I'm blaming my weight gain on the doctor. I was extremely underweight because of a crohn's flare (98 lbs.) and he told me to eat, eat, eat to gain weight. He told me to eat cheeseburgers and shakes and anything to gain weight. Then I had kids and now I'm fat. I wonder if I can sue him for making me fat? emoticon

Hi, Lisa....Yeah, boy, you're right. It seems like the advice for weight loss is the EXACT opposite of the advice for Crohn's sufferers. "Eat high fiber....eat low fiber....Eat raw vegetables....DON'T eat raw vegetables..." Last year I was 4 weeks into trying to lose the 15 pounds I'd gained from quitting smoking when a Crohn's flare hit(STILL dealing with it) and instead of losing 15 pounds I gained 15 MORE pounds from the Prednisone. So I've now gained back all 30 pounds that I lost in 2002. It is hard to hang in there sometimes, that's for sure.

I'm Lisa. I've had crohn's for 16 yrs. Has anyone noticed that the healthy foods are the ones that bother us the most? And I love going for walks, but I wish the city would install port-a-potties on my walk route!

Thanks! I have not tried any of the biologics yet. My Gastro is thinking about it to try to prevent future flares...but I think I'd prefer Humira. I don't have the time or the patience to sit for infusions...I'd rather stab myself!

Hi, Lauren,
I'm with you....I gained weight in 2006 due to quitting smoking, was 4 weeks into trying to lose in 2007 when another Crohn's flare hit & into the Pred Zone I went. So instead of losing, I gained. And after 5 months, I still had inflammation. Tried Entocort...it hasn't worked. I'm now facing surgery to remove part of my right colon to resolve this now year-long inflammation which apparently may now be pre-cancerous (I'm waiting for results). Funny time to return to weight loss, huh? Well, I figure that if I have to have surgery I'm better off being in better shape than I am now. I won't be listing my weight loss progress because I've thrown away my scale. It's too easy to become obsessed with pounds. I'm going by how I feel & how my clothes fit instead. I'm also trying to live by: "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain"

Yeah, I understand. I run like it's the plague when my dr. recommends Prednisone! I have been taking a shorter acting steroid called Entocort and it has been so much better. It doesn't have all the side effects, not sure if it is as good as Prednisone though, you might ask. I have been on Remicade for 4 years now, and haven't had a surgery since, so there is hope! emoticon

Hi Everyone,
I just joined sparkpeople. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Colitis this past July and I just finished prednisone about 2 months ago (tapered from 60 mg over the course of 3 months). I had a lot of side effects from prednisone, including muscle atrophy, constant tremors in my legs and arms, and weight gain. I couldn't walk more than a block for the majority of the time that I was taking prednisone, so in addition to the weight gain, I'm still pretty weak. I'm also in the midst of prednisone withdrawal right now, so I've been seriously fatigued, but that seems to be getting a bit better. If anyone has suggestions for how to lose the prednisone weight, then I'd love to hear them. I know, in part, I just need to be patient, but I wouldn't mind speeding up the process, as well. Thanks so much!

Lauren

Hi Everyone!

I am new to sparkpeople. I've had Crohn's for 20 years, and 2 resections. The most recent was a year and a half ago, and I gained a lot of weight from the steriods (plus I like to eat). I have to limit my fiber, because too much usually ends up with issues. I also can't tollerate nutrasweet, which sucks when you're trying to lose weight. Otherwise, I don't really have any problems.

I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Thanks for the feedback Sheila :-) Today I weened down to 45mg. Doctor told me to take off 5mg a week until I am off of them. I am hoping this week goes well, but I hear ya on the being fatigued. I started keeping a food journal a few weeks ago. I need to be good and stick with it so that if I need to try to pinpoint foods that made me feel bad, I can look back at my journal. I wouldn't have done that if I hadn't read to do that on a site I was reading almost the same week I was diagnosed with UC. I just ordered another book Breaking the vicious cycle that talks about the Specific Carb Diet. I also bought 2 recipe books that follows the diet: Eat Well, Feel Well: More Than 150 Delicious Specific Carbohydrate Diet(TM)-Compliant Recipes & Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet: The Grain-Free, Lactose-Free, Sugar-Free Solution to IBD, Celiac Disease, Autism, Cystic Fibrosis, and Oth (Releases Feb 08). I have been reading about the diet everywhere and that so many people do feel better by following it. It's worth a shot right? I am sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. Trial & error right? That is all I keep reading. I am thinking about going to see a nutrionist to see what they have to say, with being new to eating healthier and now I had this thrown in the mix, I want to make sure I am doing the right things with my diet. Last thing I want to do is gain the weight back I worked so hard to get rid of!! Thanks for listening Sheila, I need all the help I can get :-)

Holly

PS-Please let me know how the new book works out for you. I put it in my cart on Amazon so I remember what it was called. I also ordered another book that is coming out in Feb 08 called Why Doesn't My Doctor Know This?: Conquering Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn's Disease and Colitis.

And P/S What dose of steroids are you on now and how much are you trying to wean each week? I wouldn't worry about tracking food symptoms until you've been off the steroids for a week or two. The weaning process makes you really funky and your results won't be dependable. I also tried to start my weaning process when I had a few days off so I could have more time to rest. The fatigue and nausea are horrible. I would decrease my dose on Thurs. and would have Friday plus the weekend to rest and adjust. It usually took me until the second day after I decreased my dose to feel really crappy. I could feel the difference by the time I got off work Friday evening and would have the wkend to rest. Then I'd decrease again the following Thursday. Hope some of my rambling helps!

IBD is different for each of us. The foods that bother me may not be triggers for you. I had to keep a food/symptom diary for a long time (and probably should STILL be doing it) to help find foods that make me feel worse. I tried the Specific Carb. Diet for 6 months and it didn't help me at all. Some folks do well with it, so I was hoping it would work for me. Since then I've tried to be mindful and note what made me yucky. I do great with soluble fiber like whole wheat bread, wheat pasta and oatmeal but not so well with insoluble fiber like celery and other raw veggies. I love beans and have been slowly increasing my intake to eliminate the amount of gas they cause. I think I'm going to try beano or something like that. Whole fat dairy products upset my Crohn's, as does refined sugary foods and fried stuff. I'm really hoping to improve my Crohn's through diet because I've failed most of the treatments I've tried so far and hate the thought of using the more toxic meds. I'm currently reading Eat to Live by Dr Joel Fuhrman; he has an autoimmune protocol that is supposed to work well for Crohn's. I'm considering trying it. It's based on sound nutritional principals albeit strict ones. I don't care how hard it is, as long as I feel better. Maybe we can support each other in tracking foods and symptoms. As a nurse I always recommend my patients track progress on an on-going basis. Too bad I'm not-so-good at practicing what I preach!! It's great to hear from you emoticon Thanks! Sheila

Well I got the book in the mail that I ordered about What to eat with IBD. There are so many foods in this book that states can hurt IBD if eaten. Should you believe everything you read? One of the biggest things is Whole Wheat. Now we learn when trying to lose weight that whole wheat is better for you. Now I read this book and it tells me I shouldn't eat whole wheat with this disease. I sit here and I wonder if it really is true. In my case I started my life style change this past January. I changed all my breads & pasta from White to Whole Wheat. 9 months later I was diagnosed with UC. I have been tested for Celiac Disease which did come back negative. Is it a coincidence or is what she talks about in the book really true? I have once again tried weening off the steroids and I had nausea last night and am just plain tired. I just want to feel better and I am wondering if the things I am eating truly are hurting me instead of helping me?

Just Peachy!!

Hi all, When I weaned off of steroids I wound up back in the hospital twice from weaning too quickly. It causes HORRIBLE pain and rapid return of inflammation plus fatigue like I've never known. Beginning at 15 mg daily I had to decrease 1 mg every two weeks until I was off of the steroids. While taking the 'roids I gained 40+ lbs. Luckily, most of it "went away" after weaning. It's great to be in a group that understands!!

Hi there..Steriods are a decent drung and initially help with reducing the inflammation that you get with UC...so it is important to be on them for awhile while your medication can have a sufficient time to start working. I was on steriods for 4 months...and believe me I understand the food cravings, the weight gain( I gained 25 pounds), the emotions, the moon face, etc.

One thing that you will end up having to figure out is that with UC and Crohns everyone is different..and what you can eat..someone else can't which is real frustrating...Good Luck to you....

My doctor's nurse called back and said that I may have weened off the steroids too soon. So they said to go back to 60mg for another week then try to ween back down to 50mg next week. She also told me that she was going to talk to the doctor to see if he wanted me to stay on the Lialda or change to something else. When I asked if she thought I got the pain from something I ate yesterday, she didn't think that was the case. She advised me to stay away from acidic & spicy foods today.

Thank you for the responses. I woke up this morning and was doubled over in pain. So I took a painkiller which has helped. Would that have been something I ate only yesterday or does the body take longer to digest the foods which may have been 2 days ago? I started to keep a food journal, but how in the world do you pinpoint what I may have eaten to make me feel this bad??? I called my doctor today to let him know and to see if he had some advice for me. They are supposed to be calling me back.

I am bummed about the price of my medication, I just was getting rid of my student loan payment and now these drugs are going to take its place. I will have to look into a 3 month's supply and see if that would be cheaper. My pills cost me $60 a month.

I did read up on this disease a bit on the internet but the ones I was reading were more for what it is and diagnosis. Do any of you know of any good websites? I am really anxious to read the book I ordered. I hope it comes soon.

Thanks
Holly

Holly - Yes, You will have to take Lialda for the rest of your life. I am on Pentasa, just had surgery for Crohns and I am still on 8 pills of Pentasa.

Read all you can on the disease, and then read some more. I may have read every one.

Everyone is different, and I don't like the idea of cutting out food groups, except in the beginning to learn what foods you can handle or not. YES, Foods do cause flares, but it is trial and error, when it comes to food, you'll have to learn for yourself which foods are your "triggers".

Steroids are terrible, I have never been on them because my Gastro does NOT believe in Steroids (which I am thankful for). I've heard people mention to drink a LOT of water. I am sure others here can tell you more.

Good Luck to you.

Hi everyone, my name is Holly and I was just diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. I bought myself a book on Amazon last night called What to eat with IBD: A Comprehensive Nutrition & Recipe Guide for Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis. Has anyone read this book? The book had 13 reviews on it and all had good feedback for it. I have so many questions about this disease. Are there really foods that you need to stay away from because they cause flare-ups? The doctor has me on Prednisone right now and I can't stop eating. How in the world do you curb your appetite on these steroids? While I had my flareup, I had lost 15 lbs because I wasn't eating, now I am so afraid that I will gain weight back because I am on this drug. I need to get myself in check and fast!! Any help you can offer, I would greatly appreciate. Any tips?

The doctor also put me on a maintenance drug called Lialda. Am I really going to have to take this drug for the rest of my life?

You gotta do what ya gotta do! I would stay within my calorie range during flares. That's it.
If all I could keep down during flares were less healthy foods, well then that's what I ate. I wasn't able to eat fruits or vegetables for a long time on and off. Do the best you can. Spark is a Lifestyle Change, unfortunately for us that includes UC or Crohn's. Drink your water and juices to add some calories and keep you hydrated. Just do the best you can. Exercise can also be an issue. When I felt up to it, I exercised my tush off. And when the disease was acting up, I rested. Only you will know what feels right to you, everyone is different. Good luck to you!

Hi! I'm new to the community, being newly (as of yesterday) diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

How do any of you get your required calories during an outbreak? I am so nauseated, and have no appetite right now. I have no energy to cook, or to grab the right things to eat, vs. tortilla chips to help with the nausea.

Last night my husband brought me some chicken nuggets from KFC. I know, not good, but being to tired to cook, he was trying only trying to help. I managed cereal this morning. I tried real hard to eat a chicken salad for lunch, but the chicken about made me loose it, so I nibbled on some lettuce and tomatoes.

Any advice? Thanks!

Hello went to the Dr yesterday because I have had a flare up since Sept and thought it would clear up in time by itself... I don't know why I was thinking that just hoping I guess..that was the most informative Drs visit I have ever had all the 38 yrs I have had UC. I saw this Dr for my hiatal hernia 2ys ago and my regular DR suggest him too for UC. He told me that is a life time disease that requires medicine for life.and if you do not take it you do more damage inside. so he put me on Asacol 400mg 2pills 3 times a day I had been on it in the past but I thought it was to clear up the flare ups. This Dr is so good and takes time to explain things to you. He even refreshed my mind on my hiatal hernia what it could do if it get real bad. So I will add that med to the already 6 pills I take for my heart cond. Then I have to have a test in Nov. so just one day at a time. hope everyone is feeling good and enjoy the weekend. Hi,

My name is Jenn. I've had indeterminate UC for the past 4 years. I'm currently stable and am taking Salofalk and Imuran to manage the UC.

I'm looking foward to being able to work on my weight loss since my colitis has been stable for 1 year and a half and now I have more energy.

Wow! 6' tall and only 115 pounds? My son is 5'10" and weighed in at 134 pounds today - and he is skinny as a rail. Is he struggling right now to get stabilized? I know that weight and height gains are slugglish when the Crohn's is active.

Jesse (my 15 y.o, with Crohn's and PSC)and I just got back from his quarterly re-check and we are feeling really good about things right now. Won't know his blood draw results for a week or so but I'm feeling like everything is going to be good. If they are, we'll be able to get him off the Iron, Zinc and Flagyl, putting him down to just his 6MP and Urso (for the PSC). He was dx'd last May (06) and at that time weighed in at 75 pounds (he was looking really bad!) and only 5'6-1/2" so you can see that in one year he's nearly doubled his weight and gained 3-1/2 inches in height! Today he's looking great. I am feeling so good (and so is he!!!). Just had to crow a little there!

Thanks for the info, Carolyn.

Unfortunately tendency for anemia is in the genes-so I guess that fact really doesn't work in his favor. He is taking iron and I guess his doctor will find out what concoction of drugs helps. Time will tell.

take care, all.

Hi DSCUDI emoticon

Actually, no ... not everyone with UC has anemia. More often it has to do with slow loss of blood through all those ulcerations in the colon.

When my Crohns was first diagnosed, they found I had literally hundreds of tiny pipoint bleeding ulcers throughout my colon. What they couldn't understand was why I wasn't anemic! I have friends with UC who constantly struggle against anemia and others who aren't bothered at all by it. Everyone's body seems to react differently.

Sure hope they can pinpoint the exact reason for your brother's anemia. That's the tough part. Once they identify though, treatment can progress fairly rapidly.

Take care,
Carolyn

I was wondering if anyone would be up for a challange next week. Just to get our blood pumping a little. One of my favorites is daily posts telling about our water and calorie intake along with exercise. Let me now what you think. I know it can be hard sometimes with our IBD, but it might be fun and rewarding too. emoticon

Hi Carolyn and everyone!

My brother is very anemic, just had a fever for two days this week. He is 6' and 115lbs. So the doctor took him off one of the drugs has was taking.
Does everyone with UC have anemia and frequent blood counts? Is it because the certain drugs weaken your immune system, right?

Laura -- It's really tough to come up with a list of "forbidden" foods since each person is sooooo different when it comes to this group of diseases. Some are lactose intolerant, others find dairy products very soothing. Some can't tolerate raw fruits & veggies (or even cooked ones!), while others can eat them just fine. Some are thrown for a loop by spices and seasonings and others aren't.

It's just such an individual thing, and we have all had to go through a somewhat lengthy trial and error process to find out just what suits our own body!

Just take it slowly and don't add more than 1 new food every couple of weeks so that you can be sure what the culprit is.

Take care,
Carolyn

The only one that I'm aware of is the one that I'm on, The Specific Carbohydrate Diet, by Elaine Gottschall (Not sure if I spelled that right).

I'm sure though, that there must be more than that one. I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for or not.
