Argh, I went to the Civic at one point and was horrified with their lack of updated information. The world is changing and I think there are new possibilities. Anyone read The Obesity Code?

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

Thought I would add to this discussion as i went for an orientation yesterday (after waiting for nearly one year!). You have to be referred by your doctor, and their waiting list is very long. Note that I am not a medical professional nor associated with the program; this is my understanding from the session yesterday and the hand-outs they provided.

I went to the Civic Weight Management Clinic, which runs two similar programs: one for people who want to lose weight, and one for those who also want bariatric surgery. I went for the one to lose weight. There were about 45 people attending, with a wide range of needs: obesity, kidney transplant, people on dialysis...

You start with the 2-hour orientation, then wait for them to schedule you for bloodwork and possibly ECG (doctor decides if needed, depending on your file). The program is based on four Optifast shakes per day, 900 cal total. You can only get them via prescription, and they only have chocolate and vanilla, It is all you "eat" for 6-12 weeks. However, in addition to that there are weekly 3-hour meetings which are half group (info and sharing) and half individual consultations with and physician so they really do track you individually to help you with your learning and progress.

The learning component is huge, and the weekly meetings go beyond the 12 weeks to 26 weeks. You gradually re-introduce food (with support and advice from the team), with a goal of losing 10-20% of your weight. Then maintenance (weeks 27 to 52), there are 6 follow-up meetings.

I likely won't be pursing this as Optifast is based on dairy and contains aspartame. I have tolerance issues with both. However, others have reported that friends/relatives had great success with this program, including the one guy who was there after having followed it to lose weight before his kidney transplant. He was back after the transplant for more.

Dr. Freedhoff has published a book called "The Diet Fix: Why diets fail and how to make yours work". I found it has a lot of good advice ... not the complete answer for me, but still very helpful.

Hi:)

I signed up to do the core program because I had a friend who lost 80 pounds. Unfortunately soon after she was hurt and weight loss understandably took a back seat. She has gained some (most?) of the weight back but her diabetes is still gone which is great!

In preparation for the program I started eating mostly planet based foods and walking 100 km a month. I have lost 24 pounds in 2 months. I am hesitating about doing the core program now because I am getting results, without limiting consumption and getting lots of micro-nutrients, whereas the optimist seems a bit like a chemical free for all to me.

But the clinic promised me 50-60 pound weight loss in 3 months. Hard to turn away from such great results.

Does anyone who has done the program have any advice for me?

Thanks! Sharon

I was supposed to have an appointment with them today (April 26) but I left work early because I'm not feeling well. I've rescheduled it for next week. I'll come back and let you know how it went.

There is a place where you can get loans for medical purposes - if you're worried about the cost. They pay the provider directly and you make payments to them. Check them out at http://www.medicard.com/

I was really interested in reading what you had to say regarding the BMI program.

I was very successful on my own and lost 99 pounds but then the old patterns began to reassert and the weight has been creeping (or galloping) back on.

As a result, I have been seriously considering BMI as the ads seemed to indicate I would learn skills necessary to KEEPING OFF the weight. I think I will save my money thanks to what you have posted!

Cheers Elizabeth

Personal Goals:
lose minimum 5 pounds per month

Healthy Eating with NO snacking

I called them back in December when I weighed myself for the first time in 3 years and found I had gone from 275 to almost 350. I couldn't get through to a live voice and left a message. My call was never returned. Which kind of says something right there...

I signed up at BMI 5 years ago... and my feelings are mixed on the place. Here's MY opinions for the pros and cons that were applicable to me:
Pros:
- Balanced meal plan w/ option to use their high protein supplements (shakes, bars, etc.). I opted to consume mostly food instead of the shakes, and they were okay with that.
- Access to a doctor, dietitian and personal trainer was helpful when I had questions.
- No shots or pills!!

Cons:
- The doctor (Freedhoff) was quick to suggest I take Meridia (weight loss pill) to help, as the weight wasn't coming off as expected. My whole reasoning for joining BMI was to lose weight w/o drugs... if I wanted Meridia, I could have gotten a prescription free from my family doctor!
- It's on the expensive side... but no more really than joining LA Weightloss or Herbal Magic, and at least it's not a fad or quick fix
- The doctor had forgotten appointments we had, making my trip for nothing
- I didn't see results (not sure why), and they didn't do anything to help figure this out. When I decided to leave from the lack of results... they didn't try to keep me either.
- I didn't get out of it what I had expected. I felt disconnected with the doctor (just another number), and it wasn't easy getting appointments with any of the pros due to not enough staff to members. The fitness classes were mostly older people, and exercises weren't overly challenging.
All in all, I didn't get the support, answers and solutions I had expected. I still have the package (paid almost $1500... I should frame it!!) with the information. I suppose I could follow it on my own if I choose, but it didn't help me then. With that said, I have a medical condition that makes losing weight more difficult, and I think finding the right balance of carbs, proteins and fat will make a difference. So... the plan may work very well for you.

I think someone my husband knows did the hospital program with the shakes and support group...I will check and see if I can find out more - basically it did help him, he did lose weight and has - when I last saw him - kept it off.

Has anyone out there ever tried the hospital's Weight Management program and/or the BMI program (Bariatric Medical Institute)? They appear to be similar - with the exception of the first phase. At the WMC, the first phase is drinking Optifast shakes while at BMI, it's planning meals together with a nutritionist. Otherwise the programs are pretty similar - physician supervised, nutritionist and personal trainer and both have a counselor to talk to.

Has anyone heard of these?
