Walked tonight-75 minutes=4 miles. My goal is to walk 1000 minutes each month, so I walk for the minutes.

I usually go for time. I go for one hour, 30 mins one way, 30 mins back. It's interesting to see how as I get more fit, I am able to walk faster, and I find myself further than I was last time at the end of 30 mins.
On weekends however I do a specific route, which is a loop, and runs along the canal near my home. I mapped it on a route planning site called Map My Walk, and it's exactly 3 miles. That takes me an hour and a half to do.
So I suppose the answer is, on weekdays, when my time is more limited, I just shoot for time, but on weekends, I shoot for distance, since I have the whole day. :)

During my lunch hour, it's a matter of how many minutes of walking I can get in before it's up. After work, it's how many steps. (my goal is to get to 12,000-15,000 a day). On the weekends it's how many miles I can do.

I use both. I try to walk during lunch and my goals ar at least 1 mile a day. If I am at 25 minutes and I haven't got there yet I speed up and make the mile.
