It is not a "stretch" at all. Trust me, I did my literature review quite well as well as met with the sugar people before even considering testifying in Washington. I am also a chemist as well as a nurse practitioner which is why I was being asked to testify. There IS excellent research supporting the harmful effects of Splenda. " Industrial chemist Ron Martini, who specializes in insect control
and lectures on public health, said sucralose is made by taking a
sugar molecule, removing three hydroxyls and introducing chlorine, "the attack dog of chemistry,".

He added that this chlorinated sugar breaks down in the metabolic processes of the body, leaving free chlorine, a situation that is eerily similar in chemical makeup to chemical weapons, sanitizers and pesticides such as DDT."

In January of 2009, there is an alarming report (and research by Duke University) (one of many) in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health Part A that disputes Splenda's claims of safety in their product. When I spoke to the Splenda people, they didn't even want to hear what happened with me or anyone else. Spoke volumes to me with that response!
In research, there are always arguments as to what variables really constitute a "legitimate" study or not. I consumed Spenda for two years until I had a severe reaction...it was as if enough poison built up in my body to finally cause a reaction.
But, please, do NOT take my word for it or anyone else's. Do your own research and decide if Splenda is right for your body!! Personally, I am a fan of Stevia and products with Stevia...so far, so good... emoticon
I have seen patients have migraines, rashes, abdominal pain and diarrhea with Splenda. Just sayin'.....
Peace,
Chayo

I'm a science major and a RN too and my son is a science teacher who can teach biology, physics and chemistry. To say that Splenda is related to chlorine is a stretch. Chlorine is an element, while Splenda is a molecule. The Splenda molecule does contain chlorine atoms in it, but because of the bonds it has made with other atoms within the molecule, it is rendered harmless. In fact, chlorine is contained in other commonly consumed molecules including table salt and even drinking water additives. Personally I don't consume a lot of splenda or sugar but there is no legitimate scientific evidence stating that it is harmful.

Hello, Kaliswalker!
YES...I had a terrible reaction to Splenda/ sucralose and count me in the group of those who feel it should be banned! Actually, there are quite a few studies that showed the ill effects of Splenda. It's chemical makeup is actually closer to chlorine than sugar. I worked with the sugar people for a time who wanted me to go to D.C. and testify about the ill effects it had on me. For me, it gave me a head to toe rash that was unbearable for 5 weeks! Now, I feel quite brilliant as a NP to be able to diagnose strange rashes for my patients who consume Splenda! I like the way Splenda tastes, but it was poison for me emoticon
The sugar people want Splenda to STOP saying it is from sugar because by the time it goes through the chemical process, it is nothing like sugar, and closer to chlorine! There is a whole forum somewhere out there dedicated to the ill effects of Splenda!
Peace,
Chayo

LOL. I discovered cooked cabbage and liked it so well I kind of went berserk with it. Too much of a good thing can be dangerous.

I had intestinal cramping with Splenda and frequent runs to the bathroom.

If I ingest a lot of Splenda it upsets my stomach, but a lot of other things do too.

Yeah I have only heard of folks who just can't tolerate it. I know my girlfriend can't do splenda - she ends up with tummy upset.

I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing. Agatha Christie

According to scientific studies it is actually relatively rare but like any food there are people who have problems with it.

Does anyone have a reaction to Splenda?
