I always try to go straight to the veggies or salad and get a nice sized salad to fill me up, then I wait at least 15 mins or so before I head back to try 1 spoonful of the other goodies.

I "discovered" an idea (sort of by omission) at a birthday party on Saturday: Put food on a plate!

If you put the food on a plate, you can see how much you're eating and have a better chance of being able to track it.

I kept "picking" all day long -- picking up a couple crackers and a piece of cheese here, a handful of chips there...all of these calories added up, but at the end of the day I had no idea how much I actually ate.

"Eat something before you go" doesn't work for me either. I make sure I eat my regular meals so I'm not overly hungry but I don't eat right before I go. Like Sistak, I eat small amounts of everything except what I know is good for me.

I've heard a lot of people suggest that you eat something ahead of time so you don't go hungry. That has never worked for me, because I still end up eating at the cookout...which means I eat even more.

I either host the event, thereby insuring that there are lots of healthy foods available or I make sure to take something healthy so I can have small bits of several dishes and lots of mine.

For those in the United States, this is a long weekend often punctuated with family get-togethers and the beginning of summer cookouts. How do you continue your healthy lifestyle journey while attending these calorie-laden summer cookouts?
