I usually have a pure protein bar and a glass of vanilla rice milk. This also curbs my sugar tooth!

I usually try to have a protein booster shake right after I work out--usually soy milk, fruit (I love bananas and blueberries in my booster), and the protein powder. It tastes great, has lots of good protein and carbs, and it's an easy way to sneak in another two servings of fruit for the day (my sports doc recommended this to me, and I always feel great for having had it afterwards). It's a nice reward for good workout.

I, too, will generally eat a banana after a good workout... however, often times I go to the gym directly after work and after the 40 minute commute I either come home to a cooked meal, or will make dinner upon my arrival, so I don't snack much after my workouts.

Like you, I like the Kashi bars, especially the pumpkin. It is really good if you like pumpkin pie. Also, I like the Soyjoy bars. I don't find those in lots of stores but I try to keep those on hand. They are small but really good.

I read an article awhile back that said the post workout meal is the most important of the day.... And you should make sure it contains cards and protein - but little or no fat.... YES, we NEED fat, but just not on that meal.

I have since made my post workout meal non-fat yogurt and a piece of fruit. Carbs; Protein - no fat :)

((Don't take my post as gospel, cuz i know there is a lot of different info out there))

I usually have the EAS protein bar after my fitness class. It's a boot camp type class & very intense. They are 60 minutes 2 days a week & 90 minutes 3 days a week. The bars a little high in calories, but very good in carbs & protein. I may try some whole grain bread with deli meat, though. That may save some calories for something else. Thanks for all the tips!

I heard u need a protein sugar combo. It helps rebuild muscles. If I have a real intense workout, I will drink a slimfast drink as a snack. I dont follow it as a meal. That is dangerous.

That is interesting. I've always wondered what the best thing to snack on is after a work out, because sometimes I just feel hungry after exercise (though I always forget to search for info on it). I usually have an apple when I have felt the need to snack afterward.

I just read this article and thought I'd share.

The Best Post-Workout Snacks
Need to refuel after exercise? Research suggests that the best post-workout snack has a combination of protein and low glycemic carbohydrates. Low-fat dairy works, too. The amount you eat will depend on the length and intensity of your workout.

Snacking after exercise allows you to recover lost energy and prepare for the next activity. Snacks are much more important for those who participate in high-intensity or sustained workouts (longer than 30 minutes). If you spend 30 minutes or less on the treadmill, you probably don't need a post-workout snack. Your regular meals should be enough to replenish your fuel stores. This doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a bite to eat after a short trip to the gym you just have to be careful not to overdo it.

The best post-workout snacks include oatmeal, fat-free plain yogurt, and whole-grain bread or pasta. Throw in a tablespoon of trans fat-free peanut butter, some reduced-fat cheese, or a slice of lean deli meat, and you've got a snack that's rich in low glycemic carbs and protein. The glycemic index is a method of classifying carbohydrates based on their potential to raise blood sugar levels, which is due in part to the type of starch, sugar, or fiber they contain. Remember to snack within 15 minutes of your workout glycogen (the form in which sugar is stored in the human body) fuel stores are more rapidly replaced during this short window of time. Also be sure to drink plenty of water to replenish the fluids you lose through sweating.
