What We Keep
By Elizabeth Berg
4 stars
I read Bergís novels with trepidation. Donít get me wrong - they are lovely, well constructed, and touching. But therein lies the problem: they make me feel all the emotions that I strain to keep I check; they remind me that everything in life is tenuous, fleeting, fragile. If you love feeling the feels, though, I highly recommend her books.

If you like horror and want to read about a virus....I recommend Justin Croninís trilogy. Just finished The Passage and Twelve. Excellent author. Not really happy stuff but interesting and creative for sure.

Not for many. If ok with Stephen King And willing to go darker for a page turner then this might be for you. This guy is definitely a new favorite author for me.

5 stars for book 1. 6 stars for book 2 if this is your genre. I have said WOW so many times during this series. Plot was really very well thought out.

A difficult novel to read, as the subject matter is quite disturbing. A home for wayward boys, cruel and abusive adults; the inhumanity of man.

Starlight
By Richard Wagamese
4 stars

Richard Wagamese believed that stories have the power to save us. His faith in the redemptive effect of love and mercy is apparent in every page of this, his last, and unfinished, book. Alternating between brutality and serenity, malevolence and benevolence, viciousness and forgiveness, Richard Wagamese has created a narrative of opposites. McClelland and Stewart did a remarkable job of editing and closing this book in a manner that I feel Wagamese would have appreciated. Canada lost an amazing voice when he passed.

Well constructed, but maybe a bit more information than I actually wanted. I would have benefitted more from an abridged version... but absolutely great if you are just setting about getting a puppy.

I liked this book, but I didnít love it. I felt that the characters were a bit two-dimensional (the mean girl, the cocky boy, the weak friend, the helpful neighbour, et al). Melody herself didnít exhibit the kind of growth I like to witness in my book friends - emotional, affirmative, and character-changing. She grew in confidence, yes, and in her abilities to engage with the people around her, but she fell short (for me) in the growth of her character and her nature.

A Land More Kind Than Home
By Wiley Cash
5 stars
This book tells the story of Jess and his family and the tragic events that have shaped their lives. Jessís brother, Christopher, or Stump as he is called, is a non-verbal boy who dies during a church healing, and the family is fatally ruptured by the event. The author was inspired by an event he read about where such a thing happened, but the novel is wholly, and beautifully, imagined. Cashís vivid writing breathes real life into the characters and the setting. Three narrators relate the events in their thoroughly distinct personas, adding depth, understanding, and background. All in all, an excellent read.

Ms. Bitch: Finding Happiness is the Best Revenge ........... 5 stars

by Tricia O'Malley

**** Best book I've read in awhile! Love this author so much. I have read everything she has written. Most of her books include a little magic which I love. This one was based on her real life with a few embellishes here and there. Heartbreak, Starting over, following dreams, being strong enough to believe happiness is possible if you take a leap of faith. Beautiful story, could not put it down and yet tried to read it slow enough to make it last.. Did not want it to end. So inspiring. Love Love Love it. Highly recommend. (Fyi the language can be a little harsh at times, but it fits the story)

A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving **

Picked this one from the "The Great American Read " broadcast on PBS. Supposed to be one of the best literary novels of the year. It was funny at times, loooooooong and drawn out at times, and so impossibly mind numbing too. Kept hoping it would get better. The story was interesting but took me forever to get through it. Glad I read it, but would not recommend.

Here we are! This is where you can list the books that you finished in June

All posts need book title, author, and stars; 0 being the worst and 6 being very special.

I would encourage you to comment on books that others have read by sending them a Sparkmail. This topic is just to list books read and finished in June 2020 for the team.

This is a thread where we list all the books that we read during the month of June and rate them by the system listed below. Please note that you need to list title, author, and your rating for it to be counted. Also, please give a description of the book and how it appealed to you. This is a great way to find new books and authors that you might be interested in. Everyone is welcome to join.

If you started a book in May (or any prior month), but finish in June, it counts for June..

DO NOT list books STARTED; only books FINISHED. Include title, author and rating.

Rereads count, audios count, electronics count. Our minimum word count is 25,000.

Book Ratings:

0 stars - Fit for only lining birdcages.
1 star - Agent was better salesman than author was writer.
2 stars - Some parts had promise.
3 stars - Solid read in its genre. Take it on plane.
4 stars - Better than average. Don't lose it on the plane.
5 stars - Recommended. One of the top 10% of books in its genre.
6 stars - Strongly recommended. Beg, Borrow, Buy, or Steal It.
