Amy and Isabelle - Elizabeth Strout (4 stars)

Story of a teenager and her single mother in a mill town as the young woman begins to explore her sexuality. Don't want to give too much away.

It was a struggle to get into this book as it went back and forth in the timeline and from different points of view but halfway through it stayed on track and improved. I was engrossed until the end even though some parts of it I had figured out.

Fates and Traitors by Jennifer Chiavernini

3 stars

An historical fiction about John Wilkes Booth and the women who loved him.

I liked the book although I found it slow in some places. I learned a lot about the Booth family and did Google looking for extra information quite a bit.

The Piano Maker
By Kurt Palma
4 stars
An engaging and atmospheric novel about a woman whose gifts include her musicianship, her steadfastness, her attention to detail and ability to focus, and her amazing ability to build finely a crafted piano from the ground up. My only criticism is based on the spareness of her trial; but perhaps I was influenced by a recent courtroom drama I read where each phrase of testimony was examined, deconstructed, and challenged. This seemed somewhat incomplete by comparison.

The Passage by Justin Cronin. This book is part of a trilogy and is excellent. But its sort of apocalyptic....virus related. Bad choice for the time, but not same kind of virus either. He's a good writer.

Skeletons in the Closet(the Misadventures of the Laundry Hag#1) ** This is another one of those cozy mysteries that I downloaded for free or very inexpensively. I have decided that these are not for me. It took me forever to read it. It was boring to me.

This was my first book by this author, and it kept me glued to the page. I donít often choose a medical thriller, and I was not expecting to be so thoroughly engaged! Surprisingly, man reviewers stated that this was one of her worst novels, so I guess I will have to read more by her!

The Art of Inheriting Secrets (6 stars)

by Barbara O'Neal

When Olivia Shaw's mother dies, the sophisticated food editor is astonished to learn shes inherited a centuries-old English estate and a title to go with it.

Favorite read of the year for me--- layers and layers of details but you will hang on every word by the end I felt like I was living in the book and didn't want to leave. Book hangover for me...couldn't stop thinking about it.

I have read the first two books in this series. This one, the first, was good. The second was not at all to my liking. I wanted to be able to appreciate this authorís foray into the realm of mystery, but I am just not a fan.

I finished The Martian two nights ago. Author: Andy Weir.

Excellent read. I saw the movie a couple of years ago but just got around to the book for a book club read this month.

The writing style is very conversational and Mark Watney is an immediately likable protagonist. His sense of humor and resourcefulness wins you over in the first chapter.

I was surprised by how technical the book was, it dives deep into the science around deep space exploration and what would be required to survive on such a hostile planet.

If anything could be improved upon, it would be the development of the supporting characters: the other crew members from the Ares3 mission and the NASA employees back on earth. I certainly wouldn't let this deter me from reading it again, though.

Overall: 5 stars. I think this rates in the 10% of space travel books.

A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult (2*)
A gunman is in a stand-off with police in a hostage situation in an abortion clinic. The story is then told backwards in an awkward, repetitious manner from multiple POV's. How was this book lousy, let me count the ways--no, better not since there was just too much lousy to cover in a review. This book was abysmally bad all over--characters, writing, dialogue, disorganization--every way a book could be bad, this one managed.

I was angry most of the book at one sister, then it played out and a lot of understanding and compassion in the end. Great read. Totally enjoyed it to the last page.

Here we are! This is where you can list the books that you finished in May

All posts need book title, author, and stars; 0 being the worst and 6 being very special.

I would encourage you to comment on books that others have read by sending them a Sparkmail. This topic is just to list books read and finished in May 2020 for the team.

This is a thread where we list all the books that we read during the month of May and rate them by the system listed below. Please note that you need to list title, author, and your rating for it to be counted. Also, please give a description of the book and how it appealed to you. This is a great way to find new books and authors that you might be interested in. Everyone is welcome to join.

If you started a book in April (or any prior month), but finish in May, it counts for May..

DO NOT list books STARTED; only books FINISHED. Include title, author and rating.

Rereads count, audios count, electronics count. Our minimum word count is 25,000.

Book Ratings:

0 stars - Fit for only lining birdcages.
1 star - Agent was better salesman than author was writer.
2 stars - Some parts had promise.
3 stars - Solid read in its genre. Take it on plane.
4 stars - Better than average. Don't lose it on the plane.
5 stars - Recommended. One of the top 10% of books in its genre.
6 stars - Strongly recommended. Beg, Borrow, Buy, or Steal It.
