Definitely chick lit. First half was cute as a writer goes undercover to be on a dating show modeled after The Bachelor. But by the second half I was really annoyed that this mother could really seem to forget about her husband and child at home.

The Bloated Belly Whisperer: See Results Within a Week and Tame Digestive Distress Once and for All by Tamara Duker Freuman *****

This was a very enlightening book. Not exactly a fun read, but very educational. The language used is easily understandable without medical background. The recipes included look delicious! (Though I've yet to try them.)

I would recommend this book to anyone who experiences bloating. (Is there really anyonethat doesn't?)

Charming magic realism. I loved the characters in this book, and how the women had to make the best of difficult decisions, not only for the benefit of themselves, but for those they loved.

This isn't my normal genre. The premise is scary and it took me awhile for it to start flowing, About the time it did, I had to return it to the library and wait for it to become available again. I will read the next book in the series, but not sure after that. Time to read something light!

The Romanov Empress by G.W. Gortner

I've found a new author with this book. I've read a lot of both fiction and nonfiction on the Romanovs but I've never seen a book dedicated to Tsar Nicholas II's mother. It is very well done and includes a list of the primary resources the author used which I appreciate when historical fiction is written. I was in Barnes and Noble's last week and found another book by the author, a man, on Chanel so hopefully I'll get to it soon.

This is my last book for December!

That Part Was True by Deborah Mackinlay

This is a fun read that begins when Eve, a long divorced, about fifty English woman, writes just a few lines of thanks to a popular American writer of detective fiction. Surprisingly he writes a few lines back and a correspondence begins. Their short letters are often answering or asking cooking questions.

This is another book that's good for a quiet relaxing read. It's well written and would make a good Cary Grant movie.

Nine Lives: Death and Life in New Orleans

Author is skilled with words. This non-fiction account reads like a novel. The first 3/4s of the book introduces fascinating characters and leads us to their experience of Hurricane Katrina in the final pages. I learned much about New Orleans...and then learned even more as I googled maps, the history of Mardi Gras, the infamous coroner Frank Minyard, and more.

Brand new to this team! December reads (so far):

1. The Dry (Aaron Falk #1) by Jane Harper. Rating 4.

Please know that I never ever recommend books...I only rate them per my enjoyment and then tell why I rated them thus:)

Aaron Falk is an Australian Federal Police Investigator and is brought into a police matter when he returns to visit his former home. All the characters were likeable and believable. Author was very clever to not reveal details until the reader had some time to ponder what was going on. I intend to read another of her books about this character.

2. Almost Everything: Notes on Hope by Anne Lamott. Rating 5.

This wee book is written to author's grandson and young niece; she shares with them what she's learned in life so far. I am a long time fan of Lamott's prose. Her writing makes my heart sing and feel hopeful for a kinder world. Her words in this book resonate deeply for me....on death, G-d, health, hope, and particularly on the concept of grace.

3. Becoming by Michelle Obama. Rating 5.

I felt like I was sitting in a coffee house with the author, sipping lattes, while she told me her story. Her writing is warm, humble, and authentic. I think, for the first time, I really do understand what it must be like to grow up Black in our country. And what it was like to live in the White House. P.S. I loved learning that our former president isn't particularly neat at home and in fact has always maintained a tiny room/study that his family calls 'The Hole'!

Between Shades of Grey
By Ruta Sepetys
5 stars
I almost didn't pick up this book because when I saw 'Shades of Grey' I had a preconceived idea about what sort of book it would be. But then I read the blurb, and discovered I was wrong. So glad I did. The is a book about the displacement of ethnic groups by Russia during the Second World War, specifically Lithuanians being herded up and sent to Siberia. The conditions were deplorable, the people treated as less than animals, and yet the Spark of humanity remained.
A lovely, brave, heartbreaking book.

The Girls In The Picture by Melanie Benjamin

3 stars

Historical fiction of the friendship between actress Mary Pickford and scenarist (screenwriter) Frances Marion.

What I knew of Mary Pickford before reading this book was that she was an actress, married to Douglas Fairbanks and owned Pickfair. I knew nothing of Frances Marion. It turns out that both were part of the very small group of women in Hollywood at the time who took charge of their own careers. Mary Pickford was one of the founders of United Artists and took control of her films. Frances Marion became one of the best screenwriters at the time and earned 2 Oscars. Both fascinating women. I googled both of them a lot while reading the book.

I did find the book a little tedious during the part on the Pickford/Fairbanks affair and marriage. Still a good book.

Daisy Miller by Henry James--5*
Winterbourne meets and falls in love with another young American in Europe, beautiful Daisy Miller. Daisy is a permissively-raised nouveau-riche sauvage who is true to herself and keeps her own counsel, ignoring high society and its rigid rules, preferring the company of ordinary citizens who accept her for herself, which gets her condemned, but inconsistently, as either too naive or too slutty. This is a short, lucidly written novella in which little happens on the surface but in its substrata displaying much of James's cultural and psychological astuteness about the American character of his day. It can be seen as an allegory analysing fresh, vital, but naive and boorish American ideals clashing with Europe's elegant, cultured, but rigid, arrogant, and decaying social dictates in the gilded age of rising American influence and prosperity.

Uncle Silas by J. Sheridan Le Fanu--4*
This Gothic Tale was both entertaining and interesting from a literary history point of view. The story was unfolded rather skillfully but felt too slow and dragged out. It contained several flaws IMHO that prevent it from being a first-rate horror novel; the most annoying, I thought, was its being narrated by the protagonist many years later, so the author removes the suspense and terror factors by such early mega-spoilers. Then there was the unbelievable depraved indifference of the dying father in sacrificing his only child's safety and fortune, and how our Victorian male author conveniently resorts to female hysteria to justify why our sometimes plucky heroine so bizarrely freezes and passes up opportunities to save herself until cornered on the brink of death. Yet it is still an enjoyable read and a must for fans of dark Gothic horror fiction.

I was pulled into the story from page one. And even though I felt I knew how it would end, I was impelled to read it straight through in one afternoon. I loved the characters, with all their flaws and weaknesses and worries, all their mistakes and misunderstandings. They seemed so real and true - they behaved just they way they should have! This author seems to be a keen observer of the human condition, and the human heart.

The story of a single mom in 1980's NYC raising her daughter. Laura was raised in wealthy family and somewhat rebels against it. She chooses to raise Emma away from Park Avenue.

I really couldn't get into the story much. It's written in vignettes and I couldn't get into the writing style with this book.

I'm ready!!!!!

DIET IS A FOUR LETTER WORD!!!!

We are constantly creating our "karma" or destiny through our intentions, thoughts and deeds in this moment. It is achieved through countless deliberate acts of selflessness.

It's hard to be happy with others if we are not happy with ourselves.

Just keep on moving and you'll get there.

If you ever want to feel good about yourself, go out and help someone else!

Here we are! This is where you can list the books that you finished in December

All posts need book title, author, and stars; 0 being the worst and 6 being very special.

I would encourage you to comment on books that others have read by sending them a Sparkmail. This topic is just to list books read and finished in December 2018 for the team.

This is a thread where we list all the books that we read during the month of December and rate them by the system listed below. Please note that you need to list title, author, and your rating for it to be counted. Also, please give a description of the book and how it appealed to you. This is a great way to find new books and authors that you might be interested in. Everyone is welcome to join.

If you started a book in November (or any prior month), but finish in December, it counts for December.

DO NOT list books STARTED; only books FINISHED. Include title, author and rating.

Rereads count, audios count, electronics count. Our minimum word count is 25,000.

Book Ratings:

0 stars - Fit for only lining birdcages.
1 star - Agent was better salesman than author was writer.
2 stars - Some parts had promise.
3 stars - Solid read in its genre. Take it on plane.
4 stars - Better than average. Don't lose it on the plane.
5 stars - Recommended. One of the top 10% of books in its genre.
6 stars - Strongly recommended. Beg, Borrow, Buy, or Steal It.
