Eve's Daughters by Lynn Austin

Emma Bauer has kept a carefully guarded secret for years, but when she sees her granddaughter Suzanne's marriage crumbling, she realizes that lies about her own marriage may have poisoned those she loves the most. She must decide between helping her granddaughter break free from a legacy of bad choices, or take her secret, which would spare her daughter Grace (Suzanne's mother) further pain, to the grave.

What Emma doesn't know is that Grace and Suzanne have embarked on their own journey to learn more about the past, especially a mystery surrounding Grace's father.

Most of the story is told in a series of flashbacks about each woman and the choices they made, starting with Emma's mother, who came to America from Germany. Each woman's choices in life is shaped by the choices made by their mothers.

Although I found the prologue to this story a bit cheesy, I really enjoyed this book. The rest of the book was very well written and heartfelt. I really liked hearing each woman's story from their point of view. The author also did a great job of incorporating the historical events of each time period into the story.

Superbia by Bernard Schaffer ****

Fast-paced, dark account of a 'week in the life' of small town police officer Frank O'Ryan. He returns to active duty after being shot during a burglary gone bad with an addiction to percocet, and a reassignment to partner the detective no one wants to work with. Short, wryly funny - fans of "The Wire" will enjoy it.

The Advocate bt Teresa Burrell ****

Child advocate attorney Sabre Brown is representing a girl whose father will go to any length to obtain custody, but his portrayal of the doting father is almost too perfect and raises questions which warrant further investigation. The search for answers seems to tie in with the mysterious disappearance of Sabre's brother and the abduction of her client's mother. Refreshing to find a legal thriller that doesn't focus on high-profile felony crime.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman - 4 stars

In the blink of an eye everything changes. Seventeen year-old Mia has no memory of the accident; she can only recall what happened afterwards, watching her own damaged body being taken from the wreck. Little by little she struggles to put together the pieces- to figure out what she has lost, what she has left, and the very difficult choice she must make. Heartwrenchingly beautiful, this will change the way you look at life, love, and family. Now a major motion picture starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Mia's story will stay with you for a long, long time.

Prey by Michael Crichton

In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles--micro-robots--has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive.

It has been programmed as a predator. It is evolving swiftly, becoming more deadly with each passing hour.

Every attempt to destroy it has failed.

And we are the prey

Orange Rhymes with Everything by Adrian McKinty 2 stars

I have really enjoyed everything I've read by this author. Sometimes I've wondered if I've become the sort of fan that simply loves the story/writing because I overlook things. I can say that appears not to be the case. I didn't care for this book at all. Had this been my first read of his work, I'm not sure I would've given another book a chance.

Little things. I like quotation marks. I don't want to have to think too hard about dialogue, as in, is it or isn't it? And yes, you get used to that after a while, but I don't find it any less frustrating.

I felt nothing especially strong for either main character. I don't feel I got any insight to the things that went on in the story.

There was still some beautiful writing and that saved this from a one star review for me.

The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy 4 stars (3 from the kid, 5 from me)

Averaging my review with my 9 year old son's for a 4 star book. I liked it much better than he did and honestly I'm a little surprised he didn't like it more than he did. Some of it might have just been how long it was. a book more than 400 pages long can seem a rather daunting task to a 9 year old.

Personally, I loved the way the story unfolded with the various Princes Charming being anonymous compared to their Princess counterparts.

Every Reasonable Doubt by Pamela Samuels Young ****

A melding of African-American chicklit and legal thriller, it is the first in a series centered on the legal career of LA attorney Vanetta Henderson. Vanetta and Neddy McClain, the only two African-American lawyers in the firm, are tapped to take on the case of a socialite charged with the brutal murder of her philandering husband. Not only do Vanetta and Neddy not get along, the client is far from cooperative or forthcoming, and both lawyers are faced with urgent crises in their personal lives, they also face a ruthless prosecutor intent on making this case the springboard for a political career. Fast moving, engaging characters, snappy dialogue and a plotline far from predictable.

Lady of Milkweed Manor by Julie Klassen

This novel, set in 19th century England, is about a young woman forced to make some difficult choices. Twenty year old Charlotte Lamb is the daughter of a vicar, who throws her out of the house when she becomes pregnant. She forced to seek refuge in a home for unwed mothers, and must make decisions involving love and sacrifice.

I really enjoyed the unexpected twists and turns of this story, and the "Jane Eyre" feeling it had. There was a little bit of romance in the story, but the way it was done, I really did not know until the very end whether or not the "hero and heroine" would end up together. I also liked the secondary storyline involving Sally, a young woman whom Charlotte befriended while in the unwed mothers home.

Hidden River by Adrian McKinty 5 stars

I think I was technically reading three of McKinty's books at the same time. I had ordered The Sun is God. I had been on a waiting list for Orange Rhymes with Everything for weeks, and The River, I actually had as a free audio book (loved it from the start and immediately had to buy a used print edition - the only way it can be purchased as it is out of print). Everything showed up at once.

This was one of his early books and I have to say, overall I really liked it. There were a couple of scenes that literally had me breathing fast, hearth thumping, riveted to the words.

Some people don't like it when an author meanders, in this book I'm thinking specifically about the poppies being picked, the history of Bayer and heroin, and the way he thinks about it. It's meaningful, though it drifts somewhat from the plot. At least that may be how some see it.

It wasn't a pretty story. Our guy isn't an easy one to care for. He is well past flawed, but I could understand why he made some of the choices he did. The ending pulled together perfectly I thought too. Really a very good book.

The Sun is God by Adrian McKinty 4 stars

I feel the need to put out a disclaimer on this review. I really enjoy Adrian McKinty's writing. His Duffy trilogy is one of my favorite series. This book was far different than the other novels of his I've read. This one was far and away different. It's a very short book and I find myself wishing it had been longer. I think it could've been a 5 star book with another chapter or two.

The book reminded me a lot of the style I read when I was a kid - Agatha Christie in particular. It started out a little slow which I am unaccustomed to with his previous books, but once on the island, I thought it became much more engaging.

The end was fantastic and I hope that he decides to work more with the hero of the story. Talk about an interesting character! I hope he decides to write more about said hero.

Thinking she's been jilted at the altar, Lalla takes off with her father to Arizona. Her fiance' , Sheriff Caleb Stone, didn't mean to be late - he was involved in arresting a would-be robber. A sleeze-ball is dead, and Eve, a homicide detective, stands for the dead, no matter how rotten a person they were. Pia Saves the Day: A Novella of the Elder Races 4 stars I'm combining this with a short story: Peanut Goes to School, to equal a book.

Pia is mate to Dragos, a dragon shifter and the most powerful of the Elder Races. A freak accident injures Dragos, and he loses his memory of who he is and how much he loves Pia and their son. Pia helps him regain his memories. In an unguarded moment, Pia had told their baby son, Liam, nicknamed Peanut, "you need to be a big soldier now" As the magical child of 2 shapeshifters, Peanut took the words to heart, and, at 6 months of age, he appears to be the size of a first grader. He has the intelligence of an older child, able to read and do high-school algebra. To help socialize him, Pia and Dragos start him in school.

Call The Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times by Jennifer Worth 4 stars

I haven't watched any of the series this book was based on, so I read it more or less with a clean slate. I learned a lot. I didn't always like the midwife as she retold her memories of the time, but where I saw the biggest flaws in her character, I saw a reflection of myself when I was younger. We're all a little smug as young adults and we tend to make judgments on people when we can't possibly know what led them to that point.

I felt very emotional about some parts of it. I couldn't fathom living in the conditions the families there did. It has made me curious about how things were in this country around the same time in places like New York city. Were we more immune to things because we weren't dealing with a city that had been bombed? My knowledge of childbirth in post WW2 was my grandmother's experience. She went to the hospital, they knocked her out, and they handed her a baby when she woke up. She also had three miscarriages, but after those, she went to the DR for an exam and that was that. Very different and it has made me curious about why that is.

Thomas and his younger brother Dustin are living in a dystopian America where rain hasn't fallen in over a year and their parents apparently committed suicide to give them more of the ever dwindling water rations. In a country where the slogan has become "Serve your country. Conserve your water. Observe your neighbor", the boys set out on a journey of discovery - what is really out there, what really happened to their parents, and what is behind the increasingly thuggish tactics of the Water Police?

The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar

This novel about a wealthy woman and her impoverished servant offers a revealing look at class and gender roles in modern day India. It is alternately told through the eyes of Sera, a Parsi widow living with her daughter and son-in-law, and Bhima, her 65 year old housekeeper who working to support her 17 year old orphaned granddaughter Maya.

Bhima had high hopes for Maya, wanting her to have a better life than the other women in her family before her, but those dreams are shattered when Maya becomes pregnant.

We also learn that Sera's privileged life is not as it appears; she faced years of cruelty living under her mother-in-law's roof, and later, abuse at the hands of her husband, a secret that only Bhima knew about. Though Sera and Bhima share a bond, social restrictions also put space between them; for example, when they are sharing tea, Bhima sits on the floor because servants are not to sit on their employers furniture. In spite of that, Bhima is fiercely loyal to Sera and her family, something for which she may end up paying a bitter price for.

This book was very hard to put down once I started reading it. There is a lot of sadness in it, but it really makes you think. A beautifully written story.

I've been rereading the Love at Stake series by Kerrelyn Sparks. It's a paranormal series - vampires, shape-shifters, humans, and the occasional demon. The premise has the good vamps and shifters fighting the Malcontent (evil) vampires, and finding their true loves - some after centuries of being alone. Not for our younger readers. I read books 1-3 last month, here are the rest, in order, so far:

#4 The Undead Next Door 4 stars. Jean-Luc (vamp) and Heather (human mother)

#5 All I Want for Christmas is a Vampire 4 stars Ian (v) & Toni (human guard)

#6 Secret Life of a Vampire 4 stars Jack (v) & Lara (human cop)

#7 Forbidden Nights with a Vampire. 4 stars Vanda(v) & Phil (wolf-shifter)

#8 Vampire and the Virgin 4 stars. Robby (v) & Olivia (human FBI psychologist)

#9 Eat, Prey, Love 4 stars. Carlos (panther-shifter) and Caitlyn (human, ex-diplomatic corps)

#10 Vampire Mine 3.5 stars. Conner (v) and Marielle (ex-angel)

#11 Sexiest Vampire Alive 4 stars. Gregori (v) & Abby (human scientist)

#12 Wanted: Undead or Alive 4 stars Phineas (v) & Brynley (wolf-shifter)

#13 Wild About You 4 stars Howard (bear-shifter) & Elsa (more than human)

#14 The Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo 4 stars Connor (v) & Leah (research scientist)

#15 How to Seduce a Vampire (Without Really Trying) 3.5 stars Zoltan (v) & Neona (Amazon)

Riding the Bus with My Sister: A True Life Journey by Rachel Simon

This memoir follows one year in the lives of Rachel and her developmentally disabled sister Beth, (or as she calls herself, Cool Beth.) Beth spends hers days riding the city buses, and in an effort to get closer to her sister and understand her better, Rachel agrees to spend a year riding the buses with Beth (one or two days per week.)

As she rides the buses with Beth, and gets to know the drivers, she discovers during the year she is learning as much about herself as she is about her sister, and that deep down, the so called "normal" people are not that much different from people like Beth. This book also looks at the way society treats people like Beth; although she has many friends among the drivers, some are less tolerate and not very kind to Beth, and the other passengers are not always nice to her either.

But this book is not just about riding buses; the author also looks back to their childhood and how certain events shaped them both, for better or worse.

I really enjoyed this book; the author was admirable of her sister, but also honest about the frustrations with dealing with her. I was kind of sad when this book came to an end; I liked Rachel and Cool Beth and I enjoyed being a part of their world for a little while. I also enjoyed the stories of the drivers and how they related to Beth.

I could also relate to Rachel; I too have a sister who is intellectually disabled. She is not as loud or as flamboyant as Beth, but I could especially relate to the times when Rachel felt frustrated with her.

This book was also made into a movie a few years ago by Hallmark, starring Rosie O'Donnell and Andie McDowel.

Gracie (Women & War) by Ellie Keaton ****

London in the late 1930's - Gracie is a young woman from a working class family with a war veteran father, weary mother, younger siblings, and twin brother Stan who is in love with flying. As Europe moves closer to war, Gracie becomes involved with one of Stan's flying buddies and struggles for some semblance of "normalcy" in a world increasingly far from normal. Good characters - some action felt forced and stilted, but nice first effort.

Suspect by Michael Robotham 3 stars

I seem to have a thing for U.K. based crime/mystery fiction, sometimes historical, but mostly contemporary.

I didn't much care for the main character, but the story still worked on a visceral level. You make mistakes or keep some things secret, you don't buck the system, instead you go with the flow, and some times that means you pay for that. Even though I may not have cared about him, I still felt invested in unraveling the mystery. The other nice thing about fiction set outside of my own country, is that I can believe, hook line, and sinker what I'm told. I don't know anything about how far the arm of the law can stretch or what things would be confidential, so I can just enjoy the ride so to speak.

Over all an enjoyable, relatively quick read.

The Fall of Ossard by Colin Taber ***

A disappointing fantasy attempting to encompass a young girl coming of age, awakening of spiritual powers, collapse of decaying civilization, attempted genocide of a downtrodden people - something for everyone and winding up with not much of anything.

The Killing of Jesus by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard 4*

There's a lot of Roman background which adds to the political history of the time for the reader.

But good news the end is still the same. He died and an empty grave was found.

Casanova The Venetian Years (audio) by Giacomo Casanova, Benedict Cumberbatch 4 stars

This is so unbelievably difficult to give a fair review on. I listened to the audio and he did such a supremely wonderful job with it, I almost didn't care that I think Casanova was a cad and so love much like a 13 year old girl might. I thoroughly enjoyed the tale though so I'm giving it 4 stars.

While Love Stirs by Lorna Seilstad

After graduating from Fannie Farmer's School of Cookery in 1910, Charlotte Gregory is ready to take on the world. She is excited to have the opportunity to travel, give lectures on nutrition, and give cooking cooking demonstrations on the newest kitchen revolution, the gas stove. It doesn't hurt that the gas company has hired the handsome singer Lewis Mathis to perform at her lectures. Lewis encourages her work, especially introducing fresh, nutritious and appetizing food to patients in hospitals. But young hospital superintendent Dr. Joel Brook doesn't think those changes are needed, even if the tight budget he has to work with would allow it.

Every time Charlotte and Joel are together, they argue; what will happen when they are forced to work together on a fund raiser for the hospital?

This is the 2nd book in The Gregory Sisters series, but it is also a story that can stand alone. I enjoyed this story because of the author's attention to historical detail. There was indeed a real Fannie Farmer, and she had a cooking school; she is also credited with writing the first cook book using standardized measurements.

I actually enjoyed the secondary story in this book, about Charlotte's younger sister Tessa getting a job at a theater and into trouble, more than the main story about Charlotte. I'm looking forward to the 3rd book in this series when Tessa will be get to be the "star" of the story.

The Cove by Ron Rash, 3 stars

I enjoyed this book ... with a touch of romance, mystery and superstition. The ending twisted the opposite way than I expected.

This author is my daughter's English Professor at WCU (NC) and he writes on settings in western NC.

The Devil Wears Scrubs by Freda McFadden

Jane McGill is working her first year as a intern at County Hospital, dealing with drug addict patients, a roommate who is a control freak, and sleepless nights on call; but what is really making her life hell is dealing with her senior resident Dr. Alyssa Morgan, who seems to be bent on making Jane feel incompetent. Jane starts to wonder if she will make through her first year as a doctor with her sanity intact.

There really wasn't much of a plot to this story, but it was humorous, and I enjoyed it. I think this book would appeal to those who enjoy TV shows like Grey's Anatomy and Scrubs.

Ladies of the Lake by Haywood Smith 4*

Sisters Dahlia, Iris, Violet, and Rose—all with grown children of their own—have a complicated relationship, so when their grand - mother’s will requires them to spend the whole summer—without friends or family—“camping in” at her run-down lodge on re mote Lake Clare in order to inherit the valuable land, old rivalries and new understanding emerge, with plenty of laughs along the way. Desperate to save her Buckhead home from foreclosure after being left in the lurch, recent divorcee Dahlia must complete the summer and sell her share immediately. Practical, even-tempered Violet will be no problem, but Iris has been Dahlia’s nemesis since she learned to say, “no” to her big sister. And super-sweet, quirky Garage Sale Queen Rose is so “green” she’d test the patience of a saint. As tempers flare and old secrets are revealed, four grown women discover that the past is never truly buried. (amazon.com)

A love interest, swimming nekkid, a rabid raccoon and 2 dead bodies to deal with are some of the story lines in this novel.

An enjoyable book by a Georgia author.

From Metal to Mozart by H. Craig Heller 4 stars

I like some classical music so maybe this wasn't exactly the book for me, but I still found it interesting and worthy of my time. I will copy some of the song lists, etc and make a point of finding those he mentions. Some of them I already know, but I've learned a little more about them and the people who created them, so maybe that will give it a new level of appreciation.

Confessions of a Pagan Nun by Kate Horsley 3 stars

This is a bit hard to read because it really does feel like a non-fiction account of a woman's life translated. It isn't. It is historical fiction. This may have been the first time I really gave much thought to what it would be like to suffer a conversion of faith. I chose the word suffer with good reason. This wasn't a conversion in the "let us in so we can try to show you the true God as we see it". This was a convert or die approach. I suppose many mass conversions are like that. In any case, it was interesting to have that sort of story told through the main character and overall, I thought she did a very good job.

Here we are! This is where you can list the books that you finished in September

All posts need book title, author, and stars; 0 being the worst and 6 being very special.

I want to thank our Librarian for this month, KLAD_COCKERS .

I would encourage you to comment on books that others have read by sending them a Sparkmail. This topic is just to list books read and finished in September 2014 for the team.

If you started a book in August (or any prior month), but finish in September, it counts for September.
