Falling For Her Fiance by Cindi Madsen- 4 stars
Danielle and Wes have been best friends since college, so when Wes needs a date for his sister’s wedding and Dani needs a partner for her company’s retreat, they devise the perfect plan: a fake engagement to get through both events unscathed. Adrenaline-junkie Wes can prove to both his ex and his family that he’s well and truly moved on, and serious-minded Dani can prove to her boss that she’s worthy of the promotion he seems to only want to give to a family-oriented employee.

But amid the fake swoons, fake kisses, and forced proximity, neither expects the very real feelings that develop. There’s nothing more dangerous than falling for your best friend…but what if the landing is worth the fall?

Talking Dirty With The Boss by Jackie Ashenden- 4 stars
Marisa Clair wants to get her artist dreams back on track after a life detour. That means no partying, no shopping…and definitely no men to distract her. Should be easy, but there’s something about her hot and exceedingly uptight boss and she can't seem to stop herself from ruffling Mr. Tall, Dark and Irritating.

Financial consultant Luke McNamara lives his life strictly by schedule – his OCD simply won't allow him to do anything else. And the very last thing he needs is a sassy blonde putting lipstick on his collar and messing with his routine. She annoys the hell out of him so why can’t he stop thinking about the color of her panties…and how free he feels when he’s with her?

Marisa and Luke’s plans to steer clear of one another are shot to hell after a hot office encounter. Now the two of them will have to learn to get along as they face a much more permanent reminder of their lack of self-control – a pregnancy.

Re - the the Goldfinch - I agree with your take on this book - I loved it but did feel it was a tad too long.
I read on-line that in February there was a exhibition at the Frick Museum in New York of Dutch masters on loan from the Netherlands and the exhibit feature picture was the girl with the pearl earring - but so many people had read the goldfinch and that picture was also included in this exhibition, many people stood in long lines to see the picture - even in the snow and freezing weather.

umteenth in the Discworld series - delightfully skewed story of a world borne on the backs of elephants riding on the back of a great turtle swimming thru space. Magic rules!

How (Not) to Kiss a Toad (Cindy Eller #1) by Elizabeth A Reeves 4 stars
Cindy comes from a long line of witches, but she has a bit of trouble with her magic. It easily enhances her bakery products, but every man she kisses turns into an actual toad.

They Met at Shiloh by Phillip Bryant ****

The April 6 - 7, 1862 battle at Pittsburg Landing altered the course of the Civil War in the west, was the start of the rise of Gen U. S. Grant, and changed the lives of thousands who fought there and survived as well as the families of the over 23,000 that died in one of the bloodies battles of the war. Four soldiers, two north, two south, meet in the midst of death and destruction as they struggle with personal demons as well as trying to survive the battle. First in a series that I understand will continue to follow these four men as the war that everyone thought would be short goes on, and on, and on.....

Entwined With You (Crossfire #3) by Sylvia Day- 5 stars
From the moment I first met Gideon Cross, I recognized something in him that I needed. Something I couldn’t resist. I saw the dangerous and damaged soul inside–so much like my own. I was drawn to it. I needed him as surely as I needed my heart to beat.

No one knows how much he risked for me. How much I’d been threatened, or just how dark and desperate the shadow of our pasts would become.

Entwined by our secrets, we tried to defy the odds. We made our own rules and surrendered completely to the exquisite power of possession…

Nights In Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks- 4 stars
At forty-five, Adrienne Willis must rethink her entire life when her husband abandons her for a younger woman. Reeling with heartache and in search of a respite, she flees to the small coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina to tend to a friend's inn for the weekend. But when a major storm starts moving in, it appears that Adrienne's perfect getaway will be ruined -- until a guest named Paul Flanner arrives. At fifty-four, Paul has just sold his medical practice and come to Rodanthe to escape his own shattered past. Now, with the storm closing in, two wounded people will turn to each other for comfort -- and in one weekend set in motion feelings that will resonate throughout the rest of their lives.

Huckleberry Hill by Jennifer Beckstrand

Now that their 13 children are all grown up, Anna and Felty Helmuth are ready for their next adventure- trying their hand at matchmaking. They start with their grandson Moses.

Moses however, is still holding out hope that his first love, Barbara, who left their Amish community 3 years ago, will return, so he is resistant to his grandparents attempts to match him up with graceful, sensible Lia, a woman who is tall enough to look him in the eye.

Lia has already resigned herself to being a spinster. Her overbearing father has always told her she's too tall, and that her severely scarred hand ( a result of a childhood accident) will make her unattractive to any man.

The Helmuth's ask for Lia to spend the summer at Huckleberry Hill, on the pretense of helping around the house. Lia and Moses are resistant to Anna's matchmaking attempts, but they become good friends. Just when it seems like they could be more than friends, Lia's younger sister Rachel is sent to Huckleberry Hill by her father, when he decides that Moses would make a good husband for his pretty and petite daughter. Though it breaks Lia's heart, she steps aside, as ordered by her father, and is expected to do anything she can to help Rachel win Moses's heart. The fact that Moses isn't attracted to Rachel at all doesn't deter Rachel, who is use to always getting her way.

I really enjoyed this store, and it had a lot of humor in it; I found myself nearly laughing out loud several times as I was reading. Normally, I would find a rude and snobbish character like Rachel annoying, but her character added a comical element to the story. The storyline was somewhat predictable, as a lot of stories in this genre are, but the humor really made this story stand out. Looking forward to reading more books in this series; with 13 children, the Helmuth's have a lot of grandchildren that may benefit from some matchmaking!

The Finisher by David Baldacci 4 stars

This is a book for young adults of which I am definitely not!
When I got it, I didn't realize that it was a fantasy for YA but Baldacci is one of my favorite authors so after I had it, I decided to go ahead and read it.

For what it is, it is good. After starting it, I could not put it down until I got to the end.

The Silver Linings Playbook: A Novel by Matthew Quick - 5 stars

An enchanting first novel about love, madness, and Kenny G.
The Silver Linings Playbook is the riotous and poignant story of how one man regains his memory and comes to terms with the magnitude of his wife’s betrayal.
During the years he spends in a neural health facility, Pat Peoples formulates a theory about silver linings: he believes his life is a movie produced by God, his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki; his old friends are saddled with families; the Philadelphia Eagles keep losing, making his father moody; and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy.
When Pat meets the tragically widowed and clinically depressed Tiffany, she offers to act as a liaison between him and his wife, if only he will give up watching football, agree to perform in this year’s Dance Away Depression competition, and promise not to tell anyone about their “contract.” All the while, Pat keeps searching for his silver lining.
In this brilliantly written debut novel, Matthew Quick takes us inside Pat’s mind, deftly showing us the world from his distorted yet endearing perspective. The result is a touching and funny story that helps us look at both depression and love in a wonderfully refreshing way.

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartte - 5*

The story begins with an explosion at the Metropolitan Museum that kills narrator Theo Decker's beloved mother and results in his unlikely possession of a Dutch masterwork called The Goldfinch. Shootouts, gangsters, pillowcases, storage lockers, and the black market for art all play parts in the ensuing life of the painting in Theo's care. Over 783 pages the book goes through the next 14 years of Theo's life. A dark story it is a bit unweildy at times but I am glad to have read it.

Near-term science fiction featuring a new technology that allows minds to become networked and function as we understand computer operating systems to. Explores the technological, psychological, political, philosophical, geopolitical, academic, creative, and personal implications rippling out from the emergence of that technology.

Super interesting characters and characterizations on top of all that, too.

Until the Robin Walks on Snow by Bernice L. Rocque

In a small Connecticut town, in November 1922, an immigrant family and a devoted midwife struggle to save the life of premature baby, weighing only a pound and a half when he is born. This historical fiction novella is about determination, family, faith and friendship, and includes a chapter about the family's Polish and Lithuanian Christmas Eve traditions.

The story was inspired by true events in the lives of the author's ancestors; the older brother of the premature infant was the author's father.

This was an engaging story, more character driven than plot driven. One of the things that drew me to the story is that I have a younger sister who was born a preemie, during the 1960's, who was also only 1 1/2 pounds when she was born. No one was sure at that time if she was going to make it at first, so it was interesting to read to how this family took care of their baby at home, in a home with no electricity or running water, at a time when the mortality rate for preemies was much higher than it is now. (And by the way, my sister thrived, and she is still here with us today.)

4* Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

During the summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted the fact that she is at the bottom of the eight grade social food chain; but one day, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world", moves across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all; beauty, brains, and ambition. On the surface, they seem to be complete opposites: Kate, who feels she will forever be uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at times, and Tully, with her air of glamor and mystery, is trying to hide a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever.

For the next 30 years, Tully and Kate are there for each other, even at times when jealousy, anger, hurt and resentment threaten their friendship, until an ultimate act of betrayal threatens to tear them apart forever. Can they find their way back to each other before it is too late?

I really enjoyed this story; I grew up during the 70's and early 80's, and I really enjoyed the pop culture references throughout the book during the different decades of the story, including the music, fashions, and home decor. I liked how the two girls bonded as teenagers, when they both felt like lonely outsiders; I remember feeling like that at that age too, what it meant to have one friend in the world who understood me.

There is also a sequel to this book, Fly Away, which I am looking forward to reading in the future.

I know I'm weird, but I like quotations. That said, other than trying to rewire my brain that people were talking, I liked this book. Not sure I put it on the great pieces of literature shelf, but it was an interesting piece of history/memoir.

This is book 4 of the Clifton Chronicles. Very exciting read about two English families. The ending of the book is always the beginning of the next. Kind of like "Who shot J.R.?" Read until the wee hours of the morning but had to save the last 6 chapters for today.

Gideon Cross. As beautiful and flawless on the outside as he was damaged and tormented on the inside. He was a bright, scorching flame that singed me with the darkest of pleasures. I couldn't stay away. I didn't want to. He was my addiction... my every desire... mine.

My past was as violent as his, and I was just as broken. We’d never work. It was too hard, too painful... except when it was perfect. Those moments when the driving hunger and desperate love were the most exquisite insanity.

We were bound by our need. And our passion would take us beyond our limits to the sweetest, sharpest edge of obsession.

Faithful Place by Tana French 4 stars

This is the 3rd book in the Dublin Murder Squad series, all of which have been audiobooks for me. Toss up to me as to which audio was better - either this or the first. Now to the story.

I almost didn't get this from the library. It was sort of a last ditch attempt. The stories by themselves weren't horrible, but the overall theme to me seemed to be that this squad couldn't quite get the job done. Yes, you got to know who "did it", but really, things didn't happen as they should. That happens. I get that. But when it happens 2 out of 2 times, I am a bit more reluctant to get behind the police/guard.

Faithful Place, was different. And I am so grateful because I found the story riveting and when it was getting towards the end, I was getting so uptight that we were headed down the same road again. I am happy to say, that isn't how it went. Not everything got fully resolved, but it didn't need to. And without giving away the end, I'll leave it at that.

The Divinity of Dogs: True Stories of Miracles Inspired by Man's Best Friend by Jennifer Skiff - 4 stars

Product Description
“My dogs have been the reason I have woken up every single day of my life with a smile on my face. I am among the ranks of millions of people who appreciate the souls of dogs and know they are a gift of pure love and an example of all that is good.” —Jennifer Skiff

The Divinity of Dogs is about the moments you learn something profound about life from an experience with a dog. Featuring more than seventy stories culled from hundreds of submissions to the author’s website, these inspiring and heartwarming true stories show where love, tolerance, comfort, compassion, loyalty, joyfulness, and even death have provided experiences that have led to spiritual enlightenment.

You’ll meet Little Bit, the Chihuahua who detected a small lump in her owner’s breast, a growth even doctors couldn’t find. There’s Emma, the devoted Rottweiler who ferociously grabbed her owner’s arm at the moment he was trying to commit suicide, saving his life. You’ll be inspired by Luna, the Retriever who dragged her owner to safety after she collapsed late at night in a field. And you’ll fall in love with the many dogs who simply provide steady comfort when needed— dogs like Bo, the Boxer who soothed his mistress after the loss of her son. The author also weaves her own experiences with dogs throughout the book, showing how they comforted her through mistreatment as a child, a divorce, and a cancer diagnosis.

The stories that make up The Divinity of Dogs provide hope, help, and healing for readers in the complex and difficult times in which we live. Whether you believe dogs are divine or are actually a gift from the divine, The Divinity of Dogs gives you permission to accept what you know: dogs are healers, educators, protectors, and tangible examples of pure love.

The Wanderer Robyn Carr *****

I was hesitant to start another Robyn Carr series. But I so enjoyed the last ones on audio and these are enjoyable, too. It is the same narrator and I LOVE how she changes her voice.

This is first in the Thunder Point series. Hank Cooper arrives to this small Oregon town. He has inherited beachfront property from an old friend who died in a questionable fall. Hank befriends a young teen who is bullied and hooks up with the teen's sister. It is small town living and an enjoyable read. I even decided to start #2 in the series.

The Measure of Katie Calloway by Serena Miller

The Civil War has ended, but there is still conflict raging in Katie Calloway's home in Georgia. When she finds out that her abusive husband plans to kill her so that he can marry a wealthy war widow to rebuild his ruined plantation, Katie and her little brother Ned flee as far north as the train can take them, which is Bay City, Michigan. There she meets Robert Foster, who is looking for a cook for his logging camp.

Katie takes the job, and she and Ned find sanctuary in the camp. Robert wonders if the young woman has the grit to survive the harsh conditions and never ending work, and Katie wonders if she can keep her past a secret from the man she slowly growing to love.

I really enjoyed this story, it was so much more in depth than I had expected. I felt like I was experiencing life in a logging camp right along with Katie. The characters were richly drawn; I enjoyed getting to know all of the logging men and their different personalities.

I have lived in Michigan my whole life, and I knew the state had a rich logging history, but I had not read much about it until I picked up this book. The author did very well with her research, and it gave me a new appreciation for all the work, and the danger involved in what it takes to get wood to the consumers who will use it, something I think a lot of us of take for granted.

I don't know if there is a sequel planned for this book, but I would love to read one, not only to find out what happens next to main characters, but all the other characters as well.
