Do you know what a "Dump" is in literary language?

Would you want one? You bet!

"Dumps" are industry shorthand for the cardboard racks publishers provide bookstores, that usually hold 12-15 copies of a new book in a portable stand-up display, with a colorful riser that shows the book's title and author's name at the top. Publishers typically rent space in the front of bookstores for these dumps.

For an exciting read revealing this and many other insights into the world of publishing set in a murder mystery, check out "The List" by Steve Martini.

I was as equally intrigued by the insights as I was by the story and have found Martini's stories fast reading.

i have stepped up taking better care of myself inside and out. i plan to be around for a long time. i have a thirteen and a half year old daughter and i want to be at my healthiest all the time. she only has me as a parent and her loving grandparents to look out for and after her. although she does do a lot of things herself now, including her own laundry. she is such a smart, beautiful, talented daughter! she brings happiness and joy to all she meets.

I've spent most of my working life living on pastiches of "odd jobs" - working part-time as a cashier, delivering newspapers, cleaning houses, and free-lancing for newspapers. Mostly doing that suited my schedule, and certainly the money was sufficient at the time or I wouldn't have done what I was doing.

But at this end of all that, I have to say I wasn't especially far-sighted: none of those resulted in any kind of pension worthy of the name, and none of those was the making of a fortune that meant I didn't have to worry about not having a pension.

I don't pass along a lot of wisdom (you can laff) to my children, but I do tell them - plan for retirement. Plan on retiring. You may not get there, but if you do, you damned well want to be prepared financially. Be an ant, not a grasshopper.

So far they seem to be listening to their gray-haired old mother. She's 35, he's 37, and they both have full-time jobs with futures. Would that I had been as smart as they're being... ;-)

IUHRYTR and KASEYCOFF, emoticon for the input!

There was a woman highlighted in ratracerebellion.com a long time ago who called herself a "professional hustler". She did every little on-line hustle that she could which equaled having one solid job.

I guess a more positive way of calling a hustle would be a "gig". A friend of mine from AZ told me she had never heard of a "hustle" but she had heard of a "gig". So, I know what you mean IUHRYTR.

I'm not such a purist that I wouldn't take side jobs, even if they didn't really have anything to do with writing. There's an old Scottish saying, "A man must eat, mustn't he not? And a man's children must eat, mustn't they didn't?"

Until you get the top job at a publishing house or write a multi-million-dollar bestselling novel, what's wrong with side jobs that bring home the bacon? ;-)

"Hustle" sounds so negative. If you want to or need to do things to generate income, then do them, as long as they are legal. emoticon Nothing wrong with that.

Any type of side hustle... from taking surveys to direct sales to affiliate marketing, etc.

This may not seem to be important to some writers, but there are some who need to supplement their income from just simply writing.

Do I make sense?

I've never done a residency or retreat focused on writing, but looking over this list makes me wonder if it might not be a nifty thing to try. Most of the prices are not unreasonable, and you never know what might spark some inspiration.

I will confess to finding the mobile phone a handy device to catch ideas on the fly - simple to say "Okay, Google" and have it record a brief note.

Now, I haven't DONE anything (yet) with these brief notes, but it's certainly progress when compared to my former method of "I'll remember that" and "I'm sure I won't forget this," only to find the ideas have slipped away before I got to paper and pen. ;-)

This also ties in with our team philosophy that our writing needs not be done in long blocks of time for which we always seem to say we do not have but that it can be done in brief episodes -- at home, at lunch, in doctor's waiting rooms, etc.

Interesting article featured on Spark's front page this morning:

It indirectly supports exactly what our team premise is - 10-minute increments of an activity are better than 0 minutes.

And after reading it, I felt ever so much better about not doing a solid hour of exercise! ;-)

I wouldn't say open for criticism, that's negative, but rather open for comments and suggestions which is more positive.

As for the first three, are they true or are you declaring them to be true?

Potatoes themselves have not been proven to aid in weight loss but eating them has as long as they are not loaded with butter, bacon, and other fat and calorie filled toppings. One normal sized potato has about 100 calories so when sprinkled with a little pepper and low calories Molly McButter butter substitute can be a filling addition to a meal.

As for the girls will do anything to lose weight, I agree with Kasey, but think you were merely trying to be flip with your comment. But too many articles have documented the plight of young girls with the belief they must be thin who turn to abnormal methods of staying so, even when it jeopardizes their health. So I caution against using such a phrase, even in jest.

Those are my "comments and suggestions."

I rather object to the phrase "...you know girls, wanting to do anything to lose weight."

Beyond its obvious sexist overtones, I think most people (female OR male) are too bright to want to do "anything" to lose weight.

One woman's opinion...

Hello 10-Minute Writers!

I have work cut out for me for this evening. How do these sound for topics:

April: National Stress Month

April: National Humor Month

April: National Poetry Month

How Potatoes May Aid In Weight Loss

About the potatoes, there really is some research to it. Might prove to be interesting. As the article is for my girly job, you know girls, wanting to do anything to lose weight. Then, you figure, potatoes are so cheap. Anyway, a thought. Open for criticism.

Have a super day!

Hello team... As I am needing to up the articles today, a Sparkpeople form letter is in order for today, which I know is annoying. However, I want to reach all of my Sparkfriends. So, a form letter is the best way I know how.

The articles have been interesting... "Sleep Inducing Drinks For Insomniacs", "Does Sex Make You Sleep Better", "Let's Chat About Bottled Water", "How To Throw A Large Party In A Small Space", etc. If you ever have any suggestions, I am all ears!

As for Easter, the roommates are having ham. I do not eat ham. So, I was going to have lasagna. The girl who picked up our inventory forgot to grab the cottage cheese for the lasagna. So, I am simply going to make myself bacon, eggs and toast. I am going to like this dinner whether I like or not. I may even spend the day in my jammies!

As for activity, I am so frustrated. I have been on Sparkpeople since 2015 and still have a problem of logging in my activity. What do I do to solve this problem? I get all kinds of activity. Forget to log it in by bed. Wake up and want to kick myself in the butt. This is a chronic problem. Is it that I don't think I have done enough and am discouraged? Any tips?

I lost my pedometer last week. I lead a pedometer team. Huh? Calgon, take me away.

Well, I am going to close for now. Have a super Saturday! How are you going to spend the day?

Sincerely,
ON_A_DIET

Like so many areas of life, this one has a gray zone: spanking may be useful in certain circumstances, depending on the child, the infraction, the desired behavior / lesson, and the type of "spanking."

Having recently spent several months living with a 10-15-month-old and his parents, I can certainly say the options for correction are limited - and never saying "No" is not a good response. IMHO

If a parent is using a light form of spanking to modify a child's behavior, isn't what the parent wants is the child's behavior to change for the better? Why is that a negative thing?

The article is the same one you posted on Facebook and starts by talking about "harsh" punishment. That is not what I referred to.

You are judging them by your standards. It sounds as if you believe spanking is the harsh, leave marks and bruises type of spanking instead of light taps on the bottom to get a youngster's attention.

What works for some people does mean it should be criticized by someone else who may not know the circumstances surrounding the discipline so I urge you not to impose your thinking on everyone else until you know how they use that form of punishment.

To them, your outright rejection, without knowing those circumstances, may have shown them your true colors.

Tonight, I will be working on articles. I am now content with the job. It is an all womens' website. I have been with this website since September.

I work for other websites, but for the other websites, I mostly edit other writers' work and it is more of a side hustle.

Recently, for my job, I did an article on alternatives to spanking your child. I am totally against spanking. When I told my friends about my article, they were appalled. They told me they are totally for spanking. Unreal. Their true colors have shown and I am so glad I do not have little ones because I would have trusted them with my little ones.

In keeping with our focus - or at least part of it, lol - here's an article that was on Spark's front page this morning:

www.sparkpeople.com/blog/blo
g.asp?post
=10_tenminute_workout_ideas

We often think we don't have time to exercise, but if we can squeeze in just three little segments of 10-minutes each, we will have done the recommended minimum of 30 minutes per day. And even if you don't manage three sets, why, ten minutes is better than none. ;-)

I bought a joke book at a yard sale last year. I finally read the joke book this morning and guess what? The jokes are not funny.

The book is called "Bloopers, Blunders, Jokes, Quips, & Quotes" by Jim Kraus.

I just need a good belly laugh, which are healthy.

Further, I looked at the writing jokes on the team. Thank you.

I did not start these teams. The teams were on Sparkpeople years ago.

As for being a good team leader, I do my best. There are many Sparkpeople members who copy and paste alot. I am guilty of copying and pasting sometimes, but not all that often. There are times when I want to touch base with teams and use a form letter. Those are basically times when nothing much is going on. I like to make posts unique most of the time.

Well, I guess I simply need to think about this.

Thank you.

How many members are on these teams? Too often someone will start a team expecting it to grow then when it doesn't they become disappointed and even relinquish leadership or leave the team. Or they join or start too many teams.

Better, I think, to pick a couple or a few that are active and stay with those where quality advice is offered and not those where members do not know the craft and thus are unable to offer meaningful guidance.

If you started a team or teams, and there are members, I think it is doing the members a disservice to remove yourself. They likely joined in good faith and you owe it to them to explain why you are leaving the team. Don't simply abandon them.

In the future, do not flit from team to team and get into this situation again unless it is as a team member, not as a leader, unless there are other leaders and your absence will not leave the team leaderless.

You asked. My thoughts.

Off the top of my head, what occurs to me is that most of the teams* are too similar - there is too much overlapping. Most people don't have time for more than one or two teams, at least not to actually keep up with them, post, blog / read blogs, etc.

*And to some extent this is true of SP as a whole. The purpose of a team is to enable people with common ideas or situations to come together, communicate, share... And what's the point of that if you end up copying a post and pasting it in six different places?

What you've written has prompted me to go back and rethink some of the teams I joined way back when - teams I no longer have much interest in or don't visit or post.

As to quitting teams, focusing on this one, whatever - that's entirely down to you. There aren't a lot of active people here on 10-Minute Writers, but Lou and I seem to bump along okay. (Lou does more work on the team than I do, but this is one of the few bright spots on Spark for me, so I stick around, lol...)

You get out of something what you put into it. If you enjoy leading teams, then keep doing it. If input from others is of primary concern, you'll have to decide where that line is for pulling hen's teeth. If having a venue to post ideas and suggestions is important to you, then stay with teams where you post such things, whether or not you get a response.

You need to choose your priorities and make decisions based on what you want to do. It all depends what you like, essentially... IMHO

OK... I need your advice if I may...

I am team leader of Freelance Writers Team, team Reading, Writing & Getting Healthy and team Work At Home Haven. It is basically like I am talking to myself on these teams. Should I just remove myself and solely work with all of you at The 10-Minute Writers? Should I stay on the teams? What would you do?

Last night I did an article on Finding A Relationship in 2018. Guess what my New Year's resolution was? emoticon

Tonight, I will either work on Is Talking Dirty Unladylike or How To Get Out Of A Bad Day.

Ciao for now... (and don't forget the advice...)

Really like the "40 things to give up for Lent" idea...

I am getting a late start in my day. What I am about to share with you has nothing to do with writing. But, just how things have been going...

For lunch, I made BLTs with potato chips. For dinner, burgers. Nothing spectacular, but something.

Laundry is needing to be accomplished tomorrow. My basket is the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

For Lent, I am taking 40 things out of my closet, bookshelves, etc. to give to charity. A kind-of neat way to give up something.

Yes, I super agree that boredom would be something good for us to discuss.

Thank you...

Talk again soon...

Stuck in your chair all day? Try these exercises to help relieve tension.

Windshield wiper --

Stand up. Gently tilt the top of your head left toward your shoulder. Move it back to center. Do the same on the right side. As you move your head left to right you should make a motion that resembles a windshield wiper. Repeat five times.

Leg lifts --

Hold on to the back of your chair or another similarly tall object, like a couch. Lift one leg directly backward, keeping the knees in both legs straight. Return leg. Repeat with other leg.

Back scratcher --

Stand up. Reach one arm back so that your hand is resting squarely on your back, like if you were to scratch it. Use your other hand to grab the elbow of the first arm. This should mean one of your elbows is pointed directly up and your other elbow is pointed to the side. Gently pull your upwards elbow with your opposite hand. Count to five. Repeat with your other arm.

Overhead stretch --

Reach up. Interlace your fingers. Position your palms toward the ceiling. Push up and slightly back. Count to five. Repeat.

Unless you are working 24 hours a day, I do not agree. Are you saying you cannot find 10 minutes here and there to do something -- knee bends, chair exercises -- something?

I made a decision this evening to work Monday - Friday and exercise on the weekends. I think this is a wise decision. By the time I am finished working, I am so exhausted. What do you think?
