Hi all. I'm responding to the original post regarding LABELS.

My stance has always been you can address me as Black, African-American, Afro-American, or even Negro. I am MOST fond to be addressed as an American. A father. A husband. A jazz musician. A friend. A veteran. A Cubs Scouts Den Leader. A child of God. A decent man named Reginald, or Reggie, or Reg. Judge me on how I treat you...how you feel around me.......not on the color of my skin. As I'll reciprocate to everyone else.

It's ironic. We live in the comfort of being the greatest country on earth, yet we ACTIVELY seek ways to destroy each other, just because we either disagree with, or look different from, each other. (Double irony: we humans take comfort in being the smartest animals on the planet, yet WE are the only species who has totally decimated other species. The "smartest" animal on the planet is slowly killing the planet, and each other. Its sad, because we actually NEED one another. Racism is wasted energy. Harmony is priceless and doesn't require labeling........

Popof4,
Thanks for your comments. True that polarizing factions use any situation possible to validate their thinking and that IS a sadly consistent issue among people.

All I can do is to be a part of the blacklivesmatter and keep my lifetime philosophy out there regardless of bigotry within others. I live in a multicultural environment by choice and need to keep my focus on what is healthy for mankind, not my "subdivision" so to speak.

Easier perhaps If you are on the east coast, the chance of wholesome integration is in each of our hands. I just repel from "less" than that.

It is hard to find a starting point when talking about race so I will use blacklivesmatter. Many non-blacks and some black are quick to say all lives matter. But here is the thing, the movement is drawing national attention to shootings and other violence perpetrated by law enforcement against black people. They point out how this is much more likely to happen to blacks than other races. Yet so many white people are quick to either point out the behavior of the victim, or the difficulties of being a police officer or black on black crime. They can not simply bring themselves to a point where they can post a comment in support of blacklivesmatter with out a qualifier. Race is too politicized in my opinion. Conservatives sometimes act as if it is liberals responsibility to advocate for racial justice and their responsibility to use terms like race baiting or playing the race card. This is a really sad situation that is widening the racial gap.

Ten Toes,
You are right of course. I agree this isn't what you had in mind. Plus, writing is too lengthy. I have a lifetime history with this topic that couldn't be captured on a thread except to say that I decided at 8 that segregation was so WRONG and lived my life interwoven with my view on humanity.

That's it in a nutshell from me. The rest of the country and world on this issue is bonkers and hate and fear are rampant manipulators.

Best to everyone,

I appreciate all replies so far, but a bunch of white people talking about race isn't really what I was after. Let's see if we can get a more diverse conversation going.

PASSIONATETIGER - and how exactly is Howard County "more sophisticated?" Are you referring to snobbish Columbia? I've frequently heard those who live in Howard County refer to North Laurel (Whiskey Bottom) as "the armpit of Howard County." That certainly sounds sophisticated. Or should I say elitist? Or perhaps PG County is less sophisticated because it has a black majority? Or maybe it's because there isn't as much wealth in PG as Howard. More money certainly means more sophistication.

Please don't get me wrong. I didn't take offense at what you wrote. I agree, Howard County is more sophisticated than PG County. You see, while I'm FROM PG County, I live in west Howard County, where we're far more sophisticated than the rest of Howard County. :)

emoticon And,
in talking about race and racists, I have to also ADD that school education is NOT what I was referring to.
Being educated about the entire species we call HUMANITY ...IS.

emoticon Donald Trump inherited all his money and screams out racism to the rest of the country to stir that fear/hatred passion up. TRUMP is a total racist and seems to be a northern sympathizer of the KKK. The deliberate stirring he is wild about seems to me to be ala 1935 Germany.

Donald Trump: you are so IGNORANT and DANGEROUS!
He epitomizes racism for me.

10 TOES,

Sure! But the slang words you wrote are not p/c of course, and don't enter the brain of folks who are (I'll say) better educated. You are describing the attitudes within PG County and I agree, it's a less sophisticated area compared to my Howard County. We don't Go There or Think in those terms at all.

A neighbor moved here from somewhere in the sticks of Maryland with his 1960 fear based hatred of blacks and I told him that he moved to the wrong area. I said " WE DONT THINK THAT HERE "

SVAZ, short for the yiddish word shvatzah, means black. That's okay in itself except that in the 1950 and 60s Black people were referred to as Negroes and it was a negative slang to refer to them otherwise. It was a prejudiced relationship that screamed "I mean THEM."

Race is sometimes B.S. The categories don't fit the wide variation of backgrounds and ancestry. White and Black are not insults. It's what is in the mind of the person that would make it so. And as for the slang descriptions, they are used by same race folks just as well, to differentiate the ignorance or sophistication of another.

About the original continent combo, that is another story IMHO. There are European Whites and there are whites that do not come FROM Europe but don't fit another Classification. Islanders are not called African Americans. That stuff is just the creation of the census bureau far as I know.

Must run and hope you all have a good day,
dale

I'm Called white,Red Neck and Hillbilly, and on rare occasions Bitch.lol I don't mind. Truth is, I fit all those labels to some degree. Some more than others.lol I try not to take myself so seriously that I am offended by every little thing. I am often at a loss when it comes to the correct way to refer to other races.

Is anyone willing to have a civil, thoughtful discussion about race in America, hopefully avoiding personal attacks and accusations? I hope I'm looking in the wrong places, but most of what I see on TV news and read in discussion groups indicates mostly hatred on both (all) sides.

There are many topics to cover, but I'd like to start with what I think might be an easy but important one: labels.

Many white folks seem fine with "white". Folks of other races seem to prefer (at least officially) [insert ethnicity/country of origin here] American.

Just to get it out of the way, can we agree on what to call each other when referring to race?

I'm fine with white, but you can refer to white people any way you like, which I understand is part of the problem. I don't care if I'm called whitey, honky, cracker, whitebread, etc. (Being from PG Co., MD, I'm sometimes referred to as "my {WORD WHICH SHALL NOT BE SPOKEN!}") Let's just go with white.

Anyone else want to contribute? If not, I'll just go back into the corner and watch.
