On this calm Thursday evening, I'm grateful for:

-Dear, old friends (as in known for 30-40 years), the ones who totally get you and love you anyway
-My beautiful totally white hair; still trying to decide if I want to keep it long and actually, untouched since March 2020, or get it cut. Right now I'm very "ombre" (I think is the word)
-Having a good ear and shoulder, well, actually two of each! emoticon ... and it works both ways
-Birdsong, the cooing of the mourning doves, the frogs ... I can hear it all from my office window
-Picking up more of the favorite (and very reasonable) French white Bordeaux that I love, such a treat
-The Israeli salad I am making again ... Persian cucumbers and mixed cherry tomatoes, refining my recipe a bit each time, but not big changes
-Cooking healthy dinner last night that has more for tonight ... love doing it that way
-These sweet, loving kitties I live with, for sure, always!

Cherish the moment,
Stephanie

I am mostly grateful to be a grandma this morning. It is so very good for my heart to watch these little boys grow and thrive; one to start sounding out words, the other to start saying them. I am grateful that I have friends who are happy to help with their care as my husband recovers from his elective surgery.

On this Tuesday afternoon, I'm grateful for all of this, and so much more:

-Good article from Sanjay Gupta about "cascading collective trauma" (worldwide pandemic, racism, riots, mass shootings, police trials, etc.) that impact our emotional and mental health
-Recognizing that nature, animals, exercise and monitoring news intake/sources are key for ME
-Checking on momma Canadian goose today. She's getting very tired halfway into her gestation period and not at all upset by my visits (about a 10-foot distance away on a bench)
-Researching and preparing a bit of food (organic oatmeal and corn) and fresh water to take and leave for her (shouldn't feed wild ducks/geese bread and other not-good-for-them carbs)
-Freeing three frogs from the skimmer in the larger water garden when I cleaned it; a mate was waiting nearby and one had an immediate union/reunion emoticon
-Sitting on the deck at dusk, listening to the waterfalls and the frogs with a soft breeze in the air
-Working from home, it gives me so much more opportunity - I just saw a grackle, pregnant robin and a mourning dove all splashing and bathing together in the upper pond deck in the flowing water
-Watching a frog swim in the clear water ... so graceful and natural
-These amazing kitties I live with who give me so much comfort and love

Cherish the moment,
Stephanie

- emoticon to a friend's house to make plans for a MN cabin trip this summer
- extra brussels spouts with dinner
- and ended the day with the 'group' before bed where I received this beautiful thank-you gift.

- brunch with another girlfriend, afternoon walk and work on reconnecting the printer on tap today

On this beautiful Saturday, I'm grateful for all of this, and so much more:

-A stunning day ... mid 60s, sunshine, light wind
-Meeting a friend at a city park for lunch and a 2-hour long visit, first we've had in over a year, celebrating the birthday of another friend gone
-The rest of the afternoon spent working around the crystal clear water gardens to the sound of waterfalls; lots of cleanup and trimming
-Communing with the koi, goldfish and a few frogs
-The biggest peony I think I've ever seen, right in my own yard ... I mean HUGE
-The diva kitty girls hanging with me at the windows while I worked outside
-My comfortable home, my shelter from all storms

On this lovely Thursday, I'm grateful for all of this and so much more:

-FINALLY finding the momma Canadian goose away from her nest eating, but she was nearby and came right back when she saw me; I saw at least 3 eggs, maybe more (won't actually touch)
-Memories (and pictures) from last year, same spot (cemetery), same nest
-Homemade vegetable soup from a friend ... SO good
-Trader Joe's shop done again, in and out, no lines
-More heirloom oranges ... was afraid they were gone, but alas ... another 8 pounds and 1-2 weeks of Vitamin C awesomeness
-A nice walk at the cemetery today over lunch
-The water gardens were opened Monday, then surrounded by snow Tuesday morning ... and then the beautiful snow that happened was gone in 3-4 hours

Cherish the moment!

Fear
It is said that before entering the sea
a river trembles with fear.

She looks back at the path she has traveled,
from the peaks of the mountains,
the long winding road crossing forests and villages.

And in front of her,
she sees an ocean so vast,
that to enter
there seems nothing more than to disappear forever.

But there is no other way.
The river cannot go back.
Nobody can go back.
To go back is impossible in existence.

The river needs to take the risk
of entering the ocean
because only then will fear disappear,
because thats where the river will know
its not about disappearing into the ocean,
but of becoming the ocean.

Khalil Gibran

Monday gratitudes
* A late night face time call from old friends from days in a Mendocino county commune!
* Plans to meet up with them since they are in CA, and will be camping less than 3 miles from where I will be staying this week as I head down for my dad's memorial!
* Memories of all we shared and experienced together 48 years ago...haven't seen them or talked to them since! (Only chatted on FB a few times in the past 10 years!)
* I was able to salvage some of the landscaping plants in my yard and have them in pots (which may be their permanent or semi-permanent homes). Tomato plants are also ready for pots.
* Leaves are sprouting from my Zucchini and Okra seeds and pots are waiting for them, too! (hopefully, the Butternut, Armenian cucumber, and Bitter Melon will be sprouting soon!)

Maha - cats on leashes! I love it!

On this Monday morning, I continue to be blessed and am grateful for
- a emoticon watching the Husker emoticon team yesterday afternoon
-15 of us, fully vaccinated and masked gathered to watch in our lounge

- See the TV in the background? It doesn't get the premium channel, so one of our ambassadors went home and brought his wife's kitchen TV in.

- emoticon
- We served popcorn and cookies and a great time was had by all. (Nebraska won!)
- lunch with a resident Parkinson's caregiver today to share Mark's autopsy

Feeling thankful~~

~ we had been hanging out by the Arkansas Rive for about an hour, when a virtual downpour started just AFTER we got to the car

~ re-discovering Sister Joan Chittister, via a conversation she had with Oprah about her last book, THE TIME IS NOW:A Call to Uncommon Courage

~ placed THE TIME IS NOW on hold at the library

~ loved checking out kitty photos of a FB friend. They take their cats for walks in harnesses!

~ LOL: we bought a harness for Kitty Rama, who wants NOTHING to do with it...and that's THAT! (I think the kitty needs to be introduced to them when young.)

Kathy - I've watched "My Octopus Teacher" THREE times! Every time, I loved it as much as the first time!!

On this rainy Saturday morn, I'm grateful for all of this, and so much more:

-A double-yolk egg from my farmer's market trip! First in a LONG time, I've decided that means it will be a special day!
-The wonderful omelette I made myself, including fresh spinach ... yum
-Cooking for myself for both health AND self-care
-Friends who also enjoy cooking and thank me for tips (banana and other fruit sprinkled with cinnamon, helping my friend who isn't fond of fruit eat more of it)
-Sharing some of my special spinach with Rosie; she just begs and begs for lettuce/spinach
-A perfectly made tea latte on a rainy day ... aaaaaaah
-My comfortable home that will get a bit cleaner today! Ha!
-A bit of sunshine in the midst of rain; it keeps trying to come out!

Cherish the moment!

I am grateful this morning for a long walk with a friend yesterday, the first in over a year
I am grateful I ran into my older neighbor and was able to give him some homemade jam and pickles
I am grateful for the resumption of our outdoor farmers market today. Yes, it's 38 degrees outside, but we are all pros at bundling up!

Grateful
* My dad's memorial is finally planned and we all have a role in the mass.
* My dad being the best father figure to my son (his first grandson) whose dad "disappeared" to avoid child support when we divorced shortly after my son was born. Their relationship has been one of father and son until the end.
* For our "resort" amenities (clubhouse, pool, jacuzzi, BBQ, lounge areas, etc) just a few doors down from my house finally opening a few weeks ago, and last night we had our first neighborhood gathering there.
* Gathering with friends in a socially distant circle in the park today. "Almost" feeling like normal!
* Healthy grocery shopping this morning, to combat a few days of over indulging.

On this sunny afternoon, I'm grateful for all of this, and so much more:

-Monthly Town Hall on Thursday; they'll share the "Connected Workforce" plans (work from home options); just happy they're giving us choices and more flexibility, because we've proved we can do it (and do it well) 100% from home emoticon emoticon
-The silly tuxedo kitty who's worming her way in between my back and the back of my office chair; I'm not giving in, so at the moment, she's just kind of wedged in - hahahaha! emoticon
-The view of my back yard from my home office window emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
-Savoring each and every heirloom orange (I have just over 8 pounds left) because these might be the last of the season! emoticon emoticon

After three days of driving some 1300 miles with my sweetie, our friend with dementia and Parkinsonian symptoms and her caregiver -- despite meltdowns, hurt feelings, anger, a lost phone, moving truck arriving with just a couple of hours notice and charging more than we agreed, changing hotels twice and driving in torrential rain .... I am reminded of many life lessons. For these I give thanks ...

~ we are all human doing the best we can in any given moment

~ it is a gift to let go and move on

~ the capacity to forgive is priceless

~ things work out even when they don't

~ despite how difficult these three days have been, we will arrive tomorrow morning, the furniture and boxes are there, a new caregiver starts on Wednesday, our friend has the chance to say goodbye to her well-loved caregiver, sweetie and I have grown closer because of the obstacles, our friend will be getting the 24/7 care she needs and there is light at the end of the tunnel for us.

~ my kids, mom and friends keep checking on us to see how we are doing (we feel well loved and cared for)

~ with these lessons, my exhaustion has diminished and my emotional state has lightened

~ tomorrow night we will be staying in a Bed & Breakfast in Georgetown, Maine. Our balcony overlooks an estuary, we will have a sitting area with a fireplace and the breakfasts are exquisite.

~ life goes on

Grateful
* For finding all my receipts, etc so I was able to actually get my taxes done and paid without an extension or penalty, for the first time on my own, EVER!
* For fond memories of my hubby and I waiting in the post office drive through line on April 15 every year so we could get ours postmarked before midnight. It became a tradition, and people would show up to provide snacks, drinks, etc. (Long before turbo tax!)
* For booking my first massage in 15 months! Covid precautions in place (no facial massage, masks on, sanitized table between patrons, etc.)
* For the haunting film "Two Distant Strangers"
* For having the nerve to make a gutsy phone call, and fight for changes in my dad's memorial service.
* For family...

Gratitude~~

~ the pleasure our visit this afternoon brought to Robert's 94-year old mother in an assisted living home

~ KaliGirl's wonderful hung artwork

~ decided to place a 25% off first order for 8 boxes(!) of Yasso Black Raspberry Chip Greek Yogurt Bars, because they are not available in this area; because they're frozen, shipping is expensive, but it's offset by the 25% discount. Glad we have a huge upright freezer!

~ it's a beautiful sunny day, 84 degrees

~ picked up Amanda Gorman's little volume, The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the Country at the library, which ends with --

The new dawn blooms as we free it,
For there is always light,
If only we're brave enough to see it,
If only we're brave enough to be it.

Grateful
* After watching all the academy award nominations of short films (documentaries, live action, and animated) how VERY fortunate I am to be born who I am, as well as when and where I was. As a "person of privilege", watching the misery of people in South Central Los Angeles, Yemen, Hong Kong, and other war torn countries, fighting for their freedom and justice, I was brought to tears repeatedly. I understand why our country is like a beacon of hope for so many people in the world
* My many friends in Myanmar remain safe
* A lovely day in the Sierra Foothills yesterday. Just a few minutes from my home...and swept away by the beauty of the wildflowers on the hillsides, the green pastoral fields with horses, sheep, goats and cows.
* Two friends (who are also fully vaccinated) for dinner last night and card games afterward. Almost felt NORMAL!
* I found missing tax receipts to get my taxes out without an extension this year! (First time since I lost my hubby....)

On this rainy Saturday morning, I'm grateful for all of this ... and so much more:

-Maha's love of the arts, any way you define it (thanks for the recommendation)
-First day of spring farmer's market, meaning they're now every Saturday (have been every other Saturday, with limited offerings, through the winter)
-Being able to pre-order, so getting TWO dozen fresh eggs, spinach, green onions
-Trader Joe's shop done early, before the crowds/lines, so I'm stocked for 2 weeks
-This evening will be first indoor social time, two dear friends, takeout for dinner from one of our faves, games & planning for Dillon, CO trip late August/September (all fully vaccinated)
-My comfortable home, safe shelter from all storms for me and the diva kitty girls

Cherish the moment,
Stephanie

Gratitude on this sunny spring day~~

~ Sandra's "important reminder that things work out even when they don't"

~ seemingly frequently feeling compelled to reach greater depth and clarity by adding *just a bit more* when sharing with friends (e.g., this post lol)

~ totally engaged in and loving the TV miniseries "DANCING ON THE EDGE," set in 1930s London which follows a group of black jazz musicians, the Louis Lester Band, as it finds fame based on performing in front of London's elite. Despite traveling a roadblock-filled path -- much of the upper-class recoil at the thought of black musicians playing in polite society -- the city's more progressive socialites, including members of the royal household, take debonair leader Louis Lester and his cohorts under their wing. But when the band gets entangled in a shadowy world, it results in a suspected murder that could wreck its career.

~ excited to learn about the black lead, Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was born in London's Forest Gate, to upper middle-class Nigerian parents of Igbo descent. His father, Arinze, was a doctor, and his mother, Obiajulu, was a pharmacist. His younger sister, Zain Asher, is a CNN correspondent.

In 1988, when Ejiofor was 11, during a family trip to Nigeria for a wedding, he and his father were driving to Lagos after the celebrations when their car was involved in a head-on crash with a lorry. His father was killed, and Ejiofor was badly injured, receiving scars that are still visible on his forehead.

He began acting at junior school, where he played the gravedigger in William Shakespeare's Hamlet. He continued acting and joined the National Youth Theatre. He got into the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art but left after his first year, after being cast in Steven Spielberg's film Amistad. He played the title role in Othello at the Bloomsbury Theatre in September 1995, and again at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow, in 1996, when he starred opposite Rachael Stirling as Desdemona.

~ also love the other lead, Matthew Goode, whose films I've started tuning in to
Blessed be,
xox

Grateful this Friday evening for ....

~ move day has finally arrived - we leave tomorrow to take our friend to assisted living in Maine where her daughter and grandchildren live

~ her daughter has "stepped up to the plate" to take care of her mom, something we never dreamed would happen two years ago

~ taking care of our friend has been gratifying, exhausting, crazy, frustrating and a mitzvah we would do again if necessary.

~ enjoying the challenge while disliking the frustration of this cross-country move

~ while everything that could have gone sideways has -- we've always come up with a contingency plan that worked -- an important reminder that things work out even when they don't

~ taking a break from packing

~ trucking company has assigned a driver -- a step forward after we were told her goods might not arrive until May 5. Now it's likely they will arrive in next 7-10 days. Just 10 days late instead of three weeks late.

~ Hoping another glitch has a workable ending as well.

~ all is well

Gratitude~~

~ for strong, amazing, resilient families like yours, Kathy!

~ navigating a major disappointment -- had to cancel the week's stay in the Bahamas because my passport has expired and I didn't realize it in time to remedy the situation

~ creating energy for spending the week in Florida with my beloved San Francisco friend instead (never a place I've been much attracted to)

~ finishing a sweet, juicy cantaloupe -- tasting just the way I always imagine they should!

~ thrilled to have just discovered that Joy Harjo has just released a new recording (she also sings and plays the sax):

From her website: In her first new recording in a decade, Joy Harjo the first Native American named Poet Laureate of the United States digs deep into the indigenous red earth and the shared languages of music to sing, speak and play a stunningly original musical meditation that seeks healing for a troubled world I PRAY FOR MY ENEMIES, to be released from Sunyata Records/Sony Orchard Distribution on March 5, 2021.

Blessed be,
xox
Maha

An interesting piece of *trivia:* The definition of the word SUNYATA, Harjo's record label--

In Buddhist philosophy, the voidness that constitutes ultimate reality; sunyata is seen not as a negation of existence but rather as the undifferentiation out of which all apparent entities, distinctions, and dualities arise.

Grateful
* For 17 years of loving a granddaughter...her birthday today!
* For her health, intelligence, motivation and her kind and gentle spirit.
* For her strength and endurance, as she struggles to overcome the pain of the loss of her mom.
* For her older sister, who recognizes the struggle, and who has stepped up to provide support and wise counsel.
* For my amazing son, who has been the rock for her. Who has taken her through over 30 countries, who has helped her laugh again (though not as often as before) and who has encouraged her to find her own path in life.

I too am grateful this rainy morning for cooler temps. 80 is too warm for April, or if I had my way, 80 is too warm ever!
I am grateful for having the grandsons back two exhausting, chaotic days a week, and that my husband and I agree we need a bit of a plan to these days.
I am grateful that when the 3 year old had a meltdown we were able to just sit on the kitchen floor together until he was able to calm down and we could reach an agreement
I am grateful that so many people I know are getting vaccinated.

Feeling thankful~~

~ the cold weather is behind us

~ in about two weeks I'll be in the Caribbean

~ so enjoyed sauted kale with red onions and two fried eggs with black bean salsa this morning, eaten with steamed corn tortillas

~ Robert likes spy movies and I watched Page Eight with him, starring Bill Nighy (who I enjoy!) and Rachel Weisz, among other notables. Very entertaining!

~ the amazing story of jazz singer Melody Gardot --

While riding her bicycle in Philadelphia in November 2003, Melody Gardot was struck by an SUV and sustained head, spinal, and pelvic injuries. Confined to a hospital bed for a year, she needed to relearn simple tasks and was left oversensitive to light and sound. Suffering from short- and long-term memory loss, she struggled with her sense of time.

Encouraged by a physician who believed music would help heal her brain, Gardot learned to hum, then to sing into a tape recorder, and eventually to write songs.

For several years, she traveled with a physiotherapist and carried a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator to reduce pain

Given her oversensitivity to sound, she chose quieter music. And because of her sensitivity to light, she has to wear sunglasses. On the treadmill, she listened to bossa nova by Stan Getz, specifically "The Girl from Ipanema". Unable to sit comfortably at the piano, she learned to play guitar on her back. During her recovery, she wrote songs that became part of the self-produced EP Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions. Gardot was reluctant to record her songs at first, stating that they were too private for the public to hear, but relented and allowed her songs to be played on a Philadelphia radio station.

Gardot is a Buddhist, macrobiotic cook, and humanitarian. She speaks fluent French in addition to her native English and considers herself a "citizen of the world".

Just in case, here she is:

~ connections -- someone who knows someone who knows someone offers to help

~ moved to tears

~ meaningful conversations with son & daughter this morning -- I needed that

~ a former exchange student we'd lost touch with us found us on FB. She caught me up on 40 years of her life in an email this morning. What fun!

On the Monday after Easter, I express thanks for
* A lovely Easter brunch with my son and granddaughter
* Going to the MOVIES for the first time in 15 months! (965 seat Art Deco theater, that had less than 30 people inside!)
* Thought provoking, and deeply moving academy award nominated shorts...woke up this morning, still thinking of a couple of them.
* The brilliant creative minds that wrote the stories, and produced the films
* Actors who are so believable on camera, that they allow you to escape into the reality of the film
* The hard working crew in my back yard.

This morning I am most grateful that the boys are coming back. After 10 months of mostly seeing them for a few hours some weekends due to covid fears, starting tomorrow we will again care for 3.5 year old Sy and 1.3 year old Wylie two days a week. It's exhausting, exhilarating, and full of wisdom and learning and growing for all four of us!
I am also grateful for Easter. Although I am no longer a practicing Catholic, I still love the peacefulness I feel around holy days, regardless of which faith is celebrating.

On this stunning spring day, I'm grateful for:

-Amazing weather for my 5-day weekend ... filling my soul
-A long hike at Unity Village; sunshine, fresh air, blue skies, water, birdsong, murals, rock gardens
-Used the labyrinth as my cool-down after the hike, with a meditative walking ceremony to let go of some things not serving me well
-Stretching in the garden and finding a return gift for the kind woman who shared special water with me (her words: it's been solarized, has crystals and all kinds of good things)
-Buying a beautiful hanging basket (an attempt at keeping the squirrels, chipmunks and/or birds from destroying them by digging and/or nesting) for the deck of purple and yellow pansies
-Plans to enjoy some reading and perhaps a glass of white Bordeaux on the deck

Stay Mighty, because you are!

On this Friday evening, I'm grateful for:

-Sunshine and warmer temps!
-Getting some home projects going first thing today
-Meeting friends for ice cream on an outside patio to celebrate a birthday
-Trader Joe's still having heirloom oranges for the birthday girl, who also loves them
-Getting my home office desk cleared, cleaned and organized .... aaaaaaaah, just in time for my 5-day weekend ... more aaaaah ....
-Sitting out on the deck listening to the mourning doves
-A deck window right next to my chair that I can open for the kitties ...
-Gathering lots of fallen branches from the old oak trees, win-win, as it cleans up the yard AND provides kindling for fire pits (hoping to have one Sunday)

Stay Mighty!

Thankful this second day of April for ...

~ mixed results on neuropsychological tests -- some improvements over 2017 and significant declines in memory & slower cognitive processing speed

~ overall -- the results are better than expected and the declines are not a surprise

~ sunny, crisp day

~ redbud & daffodils in bloom -- spirea leaves are a brilliant red/yellow color -- dogwood about to leaf out

~ hosting friends for dinner tomorrow for first time since we were fully vaccinated

~ patches of clover coming up in our yard -- first step toward a lawn that doesn't need to be mowed

~ gratifying sessions with four clients yesterday -- nice to hear the class is making a difference

~ welcome change in plans for this weekend

~ son trusted me enough to share a difficult job situation

~ all is well

Kathy - emoticon for setting up the post!

On this Friday morning, I continue to be blessed and am grateful for
- Early birds, followed by walking and First Friday
- bridge and Friday afternoon club this afternoon
- windy (smoke from KS yearly controlled burns). Hopefully the smell will pass quickly.
- rumor that no quarantine is required this morning. Will have mixed feelings if true. Residents (including me) would have made Easter celebration plans.
- blessings continue, I may take it as a sign to start making travel plans?

❤️Happy Healthy April
❤️Today I’m grateful for

All that’s right in my life and here.

The good health my family and I enjoy.

A husband who cares about my happiness.

Seeing the beauty around me.

Our home and community.

Matcha green tea at a reasonable price from Costco.

The willingness to let go of hurt and disappointment and focus on forgiveness and gratitude.

So many blessings.

Mazzy

Grateful today
* for the pool progress...That they have only hit a lot of shale during the excavation, not stone/bedrock. IF this continues, they should be through with the dig in another 2 days!
* For a delightful evening with good friend and her daughters. ALL vaccinated and no masks!
* For no side effects today at all from vaccine number 2 yesterday
* For a long chat with a dear friend in Myanmar. And that he is still safe, though the situation there is becoming worse each day. Everyone else I know there is still alive.
* For allowing cleansing tears, and recognizing how much I miss my dad.

~ movers came to pack and load friend's goods today
~ sunset out my living room window
~ legal-beagle sweetie made a good catch on a potentially problematic issue

OMG! I was interrupted yesterday, and totally forgot to come back and set this up! Forgiveness, please.

My April First gratitudes are...
* The pool dig has begun! Got off to a rocky start, but it was reconciled easily, and things are now moving along.
* Error in pool design plans working out for the best. Anyone who saw my old pool can recognize the shape of my new one!
* Second Covid vaccine in the arm. With the exception of short lived arm pain yesterday, and a good nap in the afternoon, I feel terrific with no side effects!
* Booking my first international trip in what will be almost two years - to Uzbekistan next March.
* More details of my dad's memorial/estate taken care of.
