Just about everything so far! We still have a lot to see and explore and discover, but the people here are simply the sweetest, kindest, most caring and giving people I have ever seen or heard of. I admire that from the bottom of my heart!
I also love the greenery, the simplicity, the beach and the faith people have in God!
All in all, the best place in the world! emoticon

Amen to every other answer!!

The mountains, the coast, and the "shorter" drives between them. The Blue Ridge Parkway. The Food. The Music. The Arts. The Growth.

But really it's the people, the sense of community around whatever is going on at the time. Grocery shopping. A car accident. A grand opening. A school event. Walking around the neighborhood.

I came in NC in 2003 and moved back (to my original home in PA) for a very brief stint in 2005-2006. And promptly rushed back down here to where people are human and to my true home. I can't imagine living in a more beautiful, more human, more eclectic and loving state.

I love:

- My Appalachian heritage.

- My family and the fine folks I know.

- Fresh yellow tomatoes, real cornbread (without sugar), real green beans grown from our family's heirloom seed, and the spreads at homecoming and family reunions.

- Seeing wild turkeys, deer, ground hogs, squirrels, possums, hawks, wood peckers, blue herons, ospreys, and all kinds of other fabulous creatures all in the same day.

- Knowing just about every song in the Baptist Hymnal.

- The freedom to call down any kid I know, and the peace of mind knowing my friends will do the same for me if I'm not handy.

- Messing with my best friend from Long Island, and the never-ending quest to make her into a Southern lady.

- I could go on all day, but will end with: I really love saying "y'all!"

Wow! I just love this state all together. I love how I'm 3 hours from the mountains and 4 hours to the beach. We can visit both worlds in one weekend. We traveled to the west coast and back a few months ago going south to west then north to east back through the middle. NOTHING compares to NC. We have it all!

I am originally from Tennessee, which is a beautiful state as well; however North Carolina has it all! We can drive to the mountains or the coast in a reasonable amount of time. The Blue Ridge Mountains are absolutely breathtaking, particularly in the fall and there is nothing more beautiful than the sun setting on the ocean at days end. Love it!!! Becky

I'm originally from South Carolina and although they are side by side, they are totally different states, although both are still southern (well the south-east anyway).

I love the mountains of NC and would love to move to that area one day. I especially love Asheville & Hendersonville. Those towns are very laid back but hip at the same time. You will see a lot of health foods, back to nature, living that appeals to me.

It doesn't hurt that it's also beautiful at those places.

We have tons of great mountain towns and that means white water rafting, skiing, gem mining, fishing, swimming, etc.

The weather is very mild (as are our winters) but the summers can be wicked hot and humid.

I've only been to the Calabash, NC area on the coast (that I can recall) so can't comment on the coastal areas too much. I'm 2 hours from the mountains and 5 hours from the ocean so the mountains always win since they are closer. :-)

I love that I can still find sweet tea, grits, cole slaw added to hot dogs, etc. here in NC just like I was used to in SC.

The people are very friendly and even in some of the bigger cities like Charlotte and others.

The weather, I love having 4 season and that although we a hot summer but other places get hotter and it's never too cold (rarely real snow in my area. The added bonus for me is I'm no more that 2 hours away from the beach and no more 5 hours from the mountains.

Where to begin...
I love the diversity this state offers, I can spend the morning on a sandy beach and be in the cool mountains by night! The people are friendly, the food is fabulous and the climate is quite agreeable-well except when it's 95+ and humid....but that doesn't happen often and it makes me appreciate the cooler temps even more!!

I love the trees. Not the pollen... but the beautiful green trees and deep blue sky. The trails are perfect for hiking and exploring, trail running, and cycling. It's a very nice place to live. Most everyone is very friendly and welcoming at the markets. I enjoy traveling all over NC and finding new favorite places.

For me I love the fall and spring here, plus the winters are pretty mild here on the coast. Summers are usually brutal so not a lot of love happening. I like that people are friendly, polite, and for me there is still a small town feeling in the area/community. This is where my son was born and calls "home". I like that it doesn't take us both working 2 jobs to make ends meet like in other areas of the country.

There are also attractions like golf, Reproductions Unlimited, Biltmore House, historical areas (more of those silver signs than you can shake a stick at), scuppernongs (a type of muscadine grape), and outdoor theater. NC is home of the original outdoor theater and there are several productions during the summer; from Cherokee to the Outer Banks.

The people are friendly I am always waving to folks during my walks and get waves back and smiles. Most of the time the weather isn't too cold in the winters this year is just a bit weird all over. Its a nice place to be raising my son without fears of gangs. Plus I can go splash in the ocean or plan a trip to the mountains all within the same state. My favorite times are spring and fall its just plain great to be outside doing activities.

I love that we have a great balance of everything here - beach, mountains, hot summers, cold winters, beautiful spring and fall. I lived in Hawaii for about a year, and it was wonderful, but there's nothing like NC to call home. You really miss the change of seasons when you don't have them.

You're kidding right? I really don't see anything great about living in NC. Although I have lived here my entire life and am looking from the inside out, there has to be something better out there. Perhaps, warmer climate and palm trees... ah the carefree beach life. Even if I'm 70 and an old, wrinkled retiree, I will experience that!!

I too love the [usually] mild winter, and the beautiful spring. I've gotten used to the hot summers. I love that they know how to do BBQ here--very similar to my western Ky. origin's BBQ, with the good vinegar sauce, none of that icky sweet red sauce. emoticon

hello I used to like the weather (this winter is making me think I'm back in ohio) other than that I love the peace and quiet and the people as so friendly

We have lots of beautiful greenery; mountains, beaches, nature. It's a beautiful state! Born and raised in NC; wouldn't want to be anywhere else!

Bring red barbecue sauce with you! East of I95, it's hard to come by. Beaches are marvelous!

Compared to the Midwest the obvious answer is "the weather." I've been here 7 years after living in NE for (let's just say a lot of years). Summers are about the same but winters are milder but if you want snow it's only a few hours away.
There is a tremendous amount of diversity from the mountains to the beaches to the urban centers of Charlotte and Raleigh and their surrounding areas.
Auto racing capitol of the US.
Many areas are bike friendly.
WARNING: You must develop a taste for sweet tea, grits and having slaw applied to your sandwiches!

It really is a great state in which to live.

Well, what sold me is the mild weather! With the exception of THIS winter (which has truely been horrible for NC), it's really a beautiful stste! We have the seasons, but usually very mild winters. I love it here and I was born and raised in SW Pa.
Why don't you take a vacation here sometime and see what you think!

The people are very friendly here, too!

My name is Peggy and I am currently the leader for the Illinois spark team. I've lived here in Illinois my whole life. My husband and I enjoy cycling (actually, that's a bit of an understatement ... we LOVE cycling!!!) and we are anxious to find a place to live where we can cycle year round. Our girls are in high school and have no interest in moving. But nothing is stopping us once they graduate and move on to college! NC has made our short list. How would you sell me on your state?
