Hi TARYN1975, good fats are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. It was thought that fats were bad but that is not true. For example, peanuts, I eat peanuts (not a lot) everyday. They are loaded with good fats and protein. This helps fill you up and keep you full longer than something that is fat-free. Look for foods that are low on the 'Glysemic Index' as they are slow digesting foods. If you are exercising everyday you may not be eating enough. The average person burns about 100 calories per hour just sitting around. Well, in a 24 hour day that is 2,400 calories. And yes, you do burn calories when you sleep. If fact, you should not go to bed hungry as it can disrupt your sleeping at night. Now factor in working, just getting up and down, walking, exercising, and anything else you do. You actually may not be eating enough. I know you want to lose weight, but the saying goes "you have to eat to lose". Are you eating breakfast? Are you eating a snack between meals to keep your metabolism up or are you getting so hungry that you feel sluggish? That slows your metabolism which slows your calories burned. Are you eating before you exercise? If not, that could be a problem because you are not fueling your body yet you are asking it to be active. You should eat something healthy before working out. Not a lot, just a little something to take the edge off. I eat an Atkins Bar or South Beach Cereal Bar before going to the gym in the morning and it gets me through until I get back home and have breakfast. If I don't eat before going I feel sluggish and my workouts aren't nearly as good. SO I EAT!

I am not expert, but I did take nutrition classes for 6 months at a major medical center. I have also read (10 times) the book "South Beach Diet" and the newest addition "South Beach Diet Supercharged". This book was written by one of the world's leading cardiologist. If you don't want to take the time to read the entire book there is a condensed version entitled "South Beach Diet Good Carbs Good Fats Guide". It is a small paperback and you can get it at Walmart or many other place for about 7 dollars. I hope this helps and keep up the good work. Everybody on this site needs support and help along the way to help us on our journey.

I do vary the workout, but it is pretty much the same I guess. Usually walking and Jillian Michaels. Now this morning I did do something different. And yes, I do do strength training every other day, just not usually the exercises this site provides. Maybe I should start doing those; maybe that will help to change things a bit. My schedule is cardio every day and strength training Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On each of those days I work on a different area of the body. As for my carbs, I eat wheat bread (when I have bread), multigrain pasta (when I have pasta), and as far as the fats are concerned, what are considered to be good fats? Another thing that confuses me is how am I supposed to eat so many calories a day but yet burn off more than I eat? I am supposed to eat between 1400 something and 1700 something a day. I would have to workout all day to burn off that kind of calories. If you, or anyone, has some advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi TARYN1975, welcome to the thread. You say you've been exercising and watching what you eat and that is good. However, if you are doing the same workout routine that ceases to work after awhile. Are you doing any strength training? That is just as important as cardio because you need to build muscle (not a lot) to increase your metabolism to burn more calories. You may want to do cardio one day and strength training the next. If you choose to do them in the same day, do the strength training then do the cardio. One last thing, are you eating enough and are you eating good carbs and good fats. If you are exercising a lot and not putting enough fuel in the tank your body will try to keep what it has and you won't see results. I hope some of this helps.

Saturday is usually my weigh-day but I have a doctor's appointment this afternoon and I want them to have an accurate weight, not being weighed fully dressed. Anyway, I am down 3 1/4 lbs. after being stuck for about 2 weeks.

Hope everybody had a good week and I will see you next Saturday if not sooner.

Tomorrow is my weigh in day and I am nervous. I haven't been seeing much change this past week. I have been exercising my big butt off and watching what I eat, and I still have problems fitting comfortably in my clothes. What am I doing wrong?

The key for us all is to keep on plugging. I recently read an article that stated if you are exercising regularly but not losing weight but your clothes fit better, that is just as important. Hope everybody has a good week. See you next Saturday.

Hi PEDAL_PUSHER AND TARYN1975, welcome aboard it is nice to see on this thread. TARYN1975 the reason your arms may be getting slimmer is because you are doing strength training. Your muscles are probably tightening up and that is a good thing. Have you ever seen someone who has lost a lot of weight but did not exercise with all the skin hanging? Well, if you keep working out you won't have that problem so keep on doing it.

You both seem happy with your progress and that's great. You will get a lot of support on this thread as everybody here is trying to do the same thing and that is lose weight and get healthy.

My weigh-day is Saturday as well.

Happy Losing!

I lost 5 pounds in the last 6 days and 1" off my waist, hips, and thighs. I lost 1.23" from my arms though. This isn't good, right? I don't understand as I have been doing strength training exercises. Shouldn't that number go up, not down? I had a rough week, but still managed to lose pounds and inches! I'll take that any day! emoticon

Good morning everybody. Hard to believe another week has passed. Time flies when you're having fun. Anyway, the scale did not move this week. That does not surprise me as I only got in one workout. The eating was not bad and that shows by the scale not going upward. I have to get to the gym on a consistent basis, it not only helps with the weight-loss but I actually get through the day with more energy. Hope all of you had a good week and best wishes for the coming week.

It is so nice to have somebody to be accountable to on a weekly basis.

Thanks for the big welcome, I did my workout tonight, was going to do my walk but didn't. Thinking I want to get up tomorrow and do my Cardio and walk in the morning, wouldn't be ready if I did them both tonight. Switching to weekend mode.

My calories were over today and will be right back at it tomorrow. My lunch threw me off, I had a sub and it wasn't even good....uggg

Hello everybody. There was no movement in the scale this week. Thank goodness it did not go up considering the going away luncheon for a friend and eating out twice. I did hit the gym 3 times this past week but I need to increase that by 2 or 3 additional sessions. Believe it or not I really do enjoy working out, especially in the morning. I hope all of you had good weeks and I look forward to seeing you next week.

Morning everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Mine was rained out, but I did manage to get some chores done I have been neglecting. I still stayed the same this week, some inches are moving around but some frustration levels are jumping into my brain!!!! Then a good spark buddy, reminded me of the importance of taking one step at a time...:) Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Hey MAMA_WOLFE & WINDSTAR2358, ate better this week but did not make it to the gym once, that's not good. It is mine own fault that I did not get my butt out of bed early enough to go, no excuse. However, I am down a 1/2 lb. for the week. I know my scale says I started at 341 but it was really 343.5 as I did not know how to set the scale to show my starting weight. Thanks to WINDSTAR2358 and her technological knowledge she was able to instruct me on how to do it.

Anyway, I hope everybody had a good week and I look forward to seeing your posts. Have a great coming week. We start a new month and that can be a good thing to motivate us all. Let's keep pushing each other as we all need a shove once and a while.

Happy Losing!

Thanks for all the support guys! I should probably get in these forums more often. Just to hear those kind words and give them back to someone else. :) Maybe that will be a new goal for me this week!

Hey JMoore...thanks for trying to make me feel better. Unfortunately I am up from my lowest weight. Up 13 pounds :( Just not since joining Sparkpeople...so that's a good thing I guess.

Hi WINDSTAR2358, losing inches is great sign that you are doing something right. Keep it up, the scale will move at some point.
