I live in a tiny, one room apartment where my bed is literally across from my kitchen sink.

A few weeks ago I was a 2.

Now my room is a 4 going on 5...

Just the thought of trying to clean it up is overwhelming me, the procrastination temptation is too great, and I find myself just resigning to the mess! Oh dear...

If you open up the pdf attached to the link below, you scroll down and can use the pictures to help you decide what level your hoarding is at on a 1 - 9 scale.

1 is cluttered, but functions household and number 9 is piled high and deep, not functioning residence, definitely hazardless to dwell in.

Hope this makes it easier to understand the scale.

WELL ON THE SCALE OF 1 - 10 i AM PROBABLY 8
It is not because i want it to be....i just had some things come up and got way behind on things. like we tore down our old house and now the things from it are in my main family room and basement. I have panic attacks when people try to help me by saying they will take some things to the junk to get them out of here. As I grew up I did not have much. My grandma would say waste not want not....and now just the thought of junking something good really upsets my system. I am trying to clean but my health has not gotten in the way. Had sugery and during surgery somehow I became a diabetic. Now everything in my life is needing to be changed...what I eat....I am out of work. When i was younger and would get laid off that is how I managed to keep my family going is by trading or selling for money things that were good that I had collected and kept. Just the thought of giving away or ditching something valuable is really a problem for me. emoticon

How to get rid of most junk mail

(I imagine we have enough papers and email to contend with without receiving more stuff we don't need!)
emoticon

Try this link as a 'how to' get off junk mail lists

www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Junk-Mail

If you are getting junk emails from companies you recognize go to the bottom of the email and 'unsubscribe'. You do not have to do any survey which asks 'why.

If you do not recognize the source - send the email to spam - some companies may be on a .phishing expedition for your identity.

Hope this helps :)

I have a table full of miscellaneous papers that I am working on. It is overwhelming and depressing, so I scoop up an armful at a time and take it to the couch to sort. Last week I ended up with three boxes of paper trash for the recycling bin. My shredder sucks, so I had to tear a lot of it up by hand...tearing in strips like we used to do for papier mache. (Does anybody do that craft anymore?)

Right now both my trash bin and my recycle bin are by my front steps. Sometimes I can toss all the mail in the bin before I bring it indoors. It is very important to not accumulate any new paper trash while cleaning out the old.

At least 90% of all my mail is somebody wanting my money. A few of those are actually bills that I owe....the rest goes directly into the bin (ideally).

If you took photos of my rooms, my rooms are 2 or even 1. But ...
I have too many boxes in closets. Photos, tax papers, wills, more photos.Thank you notes; mother's day cards,
I have too many bookcases and too many books. I went through them last week with the thought to donate some. I was able to tidy them, but not donate. I have lots of decorative boxes. I need to give them away. They are pretty, but they are excessive.
I've been watching Hoarders on Netflix and sorting and trashing papers as I watch. I listen to what the counselors say as well as what the clients say.

The throwing out will be painful. Somehow seeing people work through their pain encourages me. It is work. It is painful, and as I do it little by little the pain gets less.

Letting go of things that others would think of as unimportant can cause anxiety. Going through papers I realized that there are things I should be following through on, but I'm not able to do it because of a level 10 anxiety about it. What is that? Fear of mistake. Well, not doing is the first mistake. And yet...

The pictures are great thanks. I think I am level 6 to 7 :( I have clear walkways and little trash like empty popbottles, pizza boxes etc. but I sure do have paper!
I know why my bed has clutter on it. My BF said if i bought a queen size bed he's sleep in it with me. I bought the bed and he stayed over a few times but it didn't lead to cohabitation like I had hoped. Its been 6 years, if he isn't sure by now then I guess he really isn't interested.
I did really well cleaning when I tohught I was going to get the house. Now I am not motivated at all.

Mostly 2, I think, except for the room that has my books, my dining room table, and my large utility room They are both pretty cluttered, probably at least a 3. Except the dr table, which is fully loaded.

But I have clutter areas in every room, just about. There is a table in my kitchen that is loaded with stuff that should be elsewhere.

Oh, and let us not forget the carport...er....outside junkport.

KARLY47,I live in a mobile home, too. I am thankful that I only have a small yard and home to collect my hoarded collections. My clutter/hoarding is so bad that I can not use my central air conditioner. I bought a window unit and installed it in the window against my bed so I could sleep at night.

I stay out of my house in the daytime because the clutter makes me anxious and the heat and smell is unpleasant. I hoard furniture, clothes, papers, books, etc. Today I set out the trash since it is trash pick up day. I did fill a trashbag with the collection of cat litter box waste containers and empty food containers from my refrigator.

I can not find the hoarding scale to rate my home with at this time.

I do not know my true weight at this time. Weighing makes me anxious. I have been doing about 10% of the fullplate diet since March. I have lost 6 inches on my waist since then. Since March I have gotten rid of 8 chairs, 2 tables, 1 portable dog kennel, 1 bench, 4 pieces of children's metal and wood outdoor furniture, 2 mirrors, 2 plaques, 1 book stand, etc.

http://www.fullplatediet.org has really helped me.

Lynn you mentioned about my hoarding scale don't remember if i have put anything on this one mostly don't want to admit some but i will admit i need to face the truth that part is slow but i have admitted clean up that is phase 1 right however some days when i do not have time to stay on top of the issues it just seems to really add up before i can think. But as i mentioned on one of the other topics me and Trapper John are going to get started how much help will he be?

Is where you are with hoarding today better, the same, or worse than the first day you started?

Yes and no...
I am better at limiting acquisition, except in the area of food. I am making progress with the 'abyss' otherwise known as my computer room - still at a 3. I still don't have a daily routine which is what I need to do. I have lost and kept off 40 pounds (body clutter).
My head tells me I need to let go - of weight, of things, and of the unhealthy part of me on a daily basis. Time to be rational.

Hi I'm new. Please tell me where I can find the hording scale photos. I need to see how bad I really am!

Rich in my opinion is measured by those who love you and by how many friends you have, not by the amount of money one has!!!

Therefore, I AM rich!!!

First, where is the hoarding test??

By hiding, I meant as much as I can cram in drawers/cupboards/closets and under the bed.

First, Smidgon, Welcome. You are in the right place. Admitting to being a hoarder is a good first step.

I can understand attaching to things because I have done the same. I surrounded myself with things and weight, hoping to feel solid, protected. I numbed out.

It could be helpful for you to actually take the hoarding test and then post it. Also, if you don't mind sharing, what is the hidden part of your hoarding?

Not to pass the blame-but, my parents were hoarding. You would think when I had to clear out their house, I would have learndt. But, no, I just brought it home. I had the mind set, once it's gone-it's gone. I had a lonely child hood. I attached myself to 'things' instead of people.

At this point-my worse areas is the spare bedroom, my craft room and the garage! Everything I can keep hid.

HELP!!!

It is the end of my 1 week vacation. After my nose surgery, I slept for 4 days! Needless to say no dehoarding happened !

But now I feel good and the nose only has a bandaid to keep the wound cclose till it heals. I will have to teach all week with the bandaid.

The condo looks pretty good. Little by little I am tackling some clutter. Hurray!

Happy Easter! And Happy Spring!

Lynn, thanks for the support. I became ill so house cleaning is the last thing on my mind. Hope it is not the flu. I have not had a real infection in a long time. Sore throat, nauseous, full head, fatigued. And I already had a busy week planned with a doc appt. for me and one for hubby. and teaching full time.

It is really not turning out to be a good week. I just typed to the job and gave them more sub plans.

At least on the computer I can't send you guys germs. Chris emoticon

Karly,
Carol is right - be patient with yourself. You don't have to start big. Just start! emoticon

I can see why you feel overwhelmed.
Maintenance, for now, is a reasonable goal. It's important to recognize this will take time and effort to begin a new pattern.
Touch base and let us know how that is going for you, Chris.

March 2011 -After zooming your hording scale photos, I have to admit it. I am worse than I thought!

4 Kitchen
3.5 Living Room
4 Master Bedroom
4.2 Guest BR/Office/everything Room
5 Entrance
5 Garage
6 Basement(was 4 degenerated to 5 then some water problems so became a 6 this winter

Yup! I know I am overwhelmed. Caregiver, full time teacher, fibromyalgia, age 64 almost, knee problems, obese, on antidepressants, no family nearby......) And the above scores are even after I pay a health aide 6 mornings a week (1 hr.) and a house cleaner every 2 weeks and recently a home helper to "tidy up" and give hubby coffee or whatever he needs (1 hr. ) before I get home from work. Gradually after hubby's stroke in 2006, I added help little by little. Oh boy! I (again) can't wait for summer vacation so I can tackle some of this. Now I am just maintaining. Bills, insurance paperwork, taxes, and doctor's appts. are keeping me busy enough. I know you guys understand! Thank you for this team. But after looking at this I can see I am not quite ready to tackle it. I will continue maintaining for a bit. Chris

The goal isn't to move stuff.

The goal is to start releasing more than you bring in and release enough of it so you can move around safely.

Is there a place in your mobile home, Karly, that you would like have more accessible? The bathroom? Your kitchen? Your fridge? Where you sleep?

If you have to, put a box outside of your mobile home to begin.

Beginning is up to you. As Carol says - baby steps.

We are here for you.

MamaPicante -
You are absolutely right. It's not the number that matters. Honesty with ourselves and our team helps us have a starting place.

Lou -
I can relate. Paper, magazines, and books are some of my biggest challenges.

Clothes are too. Also, there are boxes and stuff in my garage and storage shed I haven't looked at for several years.

I imagine there is stuff at the bottom of the freezer which might have been there since the ice age. Just call me the wooly mammoth - lol.

I don't know if it is just being lazy on my part, lacking motivation, or simply procrastinating.
I'm busy living and tend to choose not to pay attention to the stuff - I think that's called denial. If it weren't so true - I'd laugh.

Reality calls...
Kitchen = 2+ (pantry = 4 and freezer = 5)
Living room = 2+
Bedroom = 3
Garage = 6+
Closet = 6

Where are each of you today on the 1-9 scale with:
A) Livingroom:
B) Kitchen:
C: Bedroom

Where would you like to be realistically in three months on the 1-9 scale with:
A) Livingroom: 3
B) Kitchen: 4
C: Bedroom 6

(Do not worry if you are an 8 or 9. To be honest with ourselves and each other is more important)

Finally took the clutter quiz from your initial post.

Kitchen = 1.5
Living Room = 1
Bedroom = 1.5

I don't leave clothes lying on the floor as the pictures show but I do have a lot of papers (articles, notes, etc.) stacked on the bedroom desk and medicines and related literature on the kitchen counters.

The back bedroom are cluttered with boxes and plastic bins of family things, many of which I inherited from Mom and am slowly sorting through and with boxes of my papers and books I need to get busy on. The dining room table where I have my laptop is cluttered with article ideas, stories, mail, etc.

So, paper is my biggest enemy.

Lou

Kitty - Your sewing room sounds like my computer room. I can hide it from other people, but the room is barely functional. I could call it a quest - lol - or an adventure for anyone who enters. My livingroom, kitchen, and Arizona room (a glassed in porch), and the guest bathroom are a 2... if you don't look in the pantry, the freezer, the cabinets, the drawers, most of which are about a 6.
I am more of a closet hoarder, no pun intended - lol - but I definitely am a hoarder AND a clutterer.

Ok, I get it. thanks.
then My kitchen and LR are about a 3 and my bedroom is a 2. if you didn't see my basement or my sewing/junk room or my porch you'd think I was almost functional, wouldn't you? LOL I mean there's room for SOMEONE on my couch, but not more than one.

but the bedroom also has floor to ceiling shelves at one end that are full and has boxes piled on the floor at that end, and we have to move everything to get the air conditioner out during the winter, and My hubby has the floor in front of "HIS" closet piled so full of stuff that it's a good thing he has long arms or he couldn't reach his clothes. I sure can't.

AND the sewing room/junk room also has floor to ceiling shelves and bins stacked two or three deep and two rows out from the wall so that's a totally non functional room. (only large enough for a single bed, desk and dresser even in it's best shape.) yes, I'd say I'm not so functional, but I hide it better than some. LOL

Lynn, I went to the NSCGD website and found that I am at level 1 in all but 2 rooms(storage room & upstairs 2nd guestroom) there I have a few of the level 2 traits. I guess I'm not as bad as I feel I am. Will go to some of the other sites to see where I stand with them. Carol

When I looked at level 3, for example, or any level of each room, I began to realize what each room has in common for that particular level. I discovered I could apply that info to any room I have in or outside the house.

For example, my side of the garage is about a 6 - stacked, inaccesible, and unusable. It's getting hard to open and close my car door because the piles of my stuff barely give me a path to my car door. My guest bathroom is about a 2 with clutter 'hidden' in the cabinet under the sink.

You can print the pictures of a level of a couple of rooms at the level you think the room you are looking at might be and see if your room has the same elments as those pictures. Holding the picture up as you look at an area helpsget a relat

Lynnively realistic picture to compare your room to.

Juliesdolls, you are correct, we all see things differently. What my grandskids see as clean, I see a mess. When my Mom says her house is dirty it means a little dust & she hasn't swept that day. At my house if I say dirty, there is dirty dishes, actual dirt on the floor that you can see & clutter out of control on the table & counters. Everything is in the eye of the beholder. Carol

I have a thought about the clutter images. You know how anerexics have a distorted body image when they look in the mirror and think they're fat when they're not?
I wonder how many people have the same distorted image about their clutter? Maybe an outsider might see someone's clutter as a 7 or 8 and the clutterer only sees themselves as a 3 or 4? Just a thought. Just like alcoholics....clutterers can go through denial that they have a problem.
OR....go the opposite. Maybe their clutter is a 3 or 4 but they see it as a 7 or 8.
Just an interesting thought I had on the subject. I think I've heard the term...clutter/and clean is in the eye of the beholder.

True the images don't cover all the areas & are just a guide for us to measure where we are on the scale. Most of my rooms are normal(?) as people stop by & I'm not ashamed to have them visit but some areas are off limits with closed doors. Most of us have different hoarding levels in different rooms. You are not alone. We can work on this together. Carol

Some people need a time limit to get moving to get things done. Others freeze because they don't think they can do what needs done in that time frame, so they don't even start. Only you know how you react to a deadline. If you need one, set it. If one prevents you from starting, please realize this is your life & you can set the pace. There is no limit on how long it will take you to start getting control & this will be a life long struggle once you do, to keep from having too many things. We are addicted to material items & we will never be cured. All we can hope for is the ability to control it. Carol

Well, I haven't got the second guest room done yet & with the grandkids in there, it won't get done, until they leave. I haven't given up nor making excuses, just being realistic about what can be done with two girls sleeping in there. Lucky if they put their clothes away when washed. Carol

One month after my first post:
Living Room: 2
Kitchen: 1
Bedroom: 8, and my bed is still clear

I made progress in the living room and then let it get away from me.

I made progress in the bedroom, getting rid of some empty boxes, cleaned off one shelf (threw some stuff away even!), and stowed away my tower heater until cold weather returns.

Two months left to reach my initial goals from 5/5/10, which are:
I'd like to be at 1 in the living room in three months and realistically a 5 or 6 in my bedroom. The garage will have to wait for those two. I can't even fathom the lower number in the bedroom yet.

I worked in the kitchen this morning for only 10 minutes and it is pretty good if I ignore the island, LOL...
Having a plan and sticking to it is key I know. My enemy is overwhelm. In the kitchen, for example, I looked at the island after I cleaned off the stove and counters and put everything away and then I walked out of the room. I took something off the island but I put it on the dining room table. Not helping. Sometimes I think, well if I don't know where it goes then toss it. but then anxiety sets in. So I'm giving the kitchen overall a 4 because of that stupid island!! I'm looking at it from a distance and see a couple things I could put away and not on the table so am going to go do that.

Good idea about a handful at a time. Things didn't pile up in a minute so I can't have them gone in a flash. Sometimes it would be nice to just wiggle my nose and *poof* they would be gone. But then the anxiety... argh.

So off to do handfulls. And get the dining room table clear so we can have dinner there.

First - Welcome and thanks for sharing. I like the hoarding scale because it gives concrete images to compare to.
My living is about a 3, my computer is around a 6, the kitchen is about a 3 with some usable counter space, the bedroom is about a 4. the bedroom closet is about a 5, the bathrooms are about a 2, the car is about a 2, but the garage is about a 7. Since I practically live in my computer room, I am going to work on that 1st. Other than the garage, this is my biggest challenge. It's so much easier to be on the computer than doing something about the area it is in. Baby steps - Lynn

PS Suz - Sounds like going through the papers is a good start. You might want to deal with one box at a time. Pick a box (any box) - make quick decisions - it helps us to stay practical instead of getting caught up in our emotions about an item. Just do one box. The rest will follow :-)
Hugs,

Living Room: the furniture is a 1 and totally open. However, the rest of the room is piled with bankers boxes where I have sorted items by type and are now piled 4-5 feet high around the room! So I guess that is a 7.

Kitchen is a 3 as the kitchen triangle is clean and usable. The end zones of the kitchen are more like a 5 as we started sorting items on folding tables which haven't moved for a few months!

Bedroom is a 1 if looking at the bed itself, but a 7 if looking at the piles of boxes that have filled up the sides of the bed and the closet area.

I wish I had never read about sorting and storing items in bankers boxes! Our house, basement and attic are full of them and most are not labeled. What a disaster. I would hate to look at how much I spent on all these boxes over the years.

I'd like to be a 1 or 2 on all rooms. I live in a small 1928 bungalow home with 3 closets in total. The bedroom closets are 27" in one room and 30" in the other. Not much room for clothing for 3 people! We also have an 18" living room coat closet. That's it. I think that is how we got stuck on the boxes for storage. Our needed beds, chairs, sofa, kitchen cooking area are ok, but all rooms are "insulated" along the walls with piled boxes of misc. items, magazines, books and out of season clothing. It is just so overwhelming to even think about. I had many boxes of papers also, but spent the past month going through them and filing as needed, shredding and tossing.

It took me a while to answer this as I get so depressed with the whole thing and of course we never allow anybody to visit in the house for about 25 years. I think I do it for protection and feeling safe (just like my weight), but now we need repairs done to our home and I need to let repair men in.

Living Room: 2
Kitchen: 1
Bedroom: 8, except my bed is usually clear.

Mind you that I live at my mom's house. The rest of my "clutter" is stacked, stacked & more stacked in the garage. That is a definite 9.

I'd like to be at 1 in the living room in three months and realistically a 5 or 6 in my bedroom. The garage will have to wait for those two. I can't even fathom the lower number in the bedroom yet.

Catz -
Good for you - especially in the kitchen. Do you think, just for today, you can open the bedroom door and deal with one handful of stuff - then close the door? Over time, dealing with the handfuls will add up. Try it and see. Let me know how it goes.

Living room-- 3
Kitchen--2
Bedroom-- 7

I don't feel like I have any hope with the bedroom. I've been working HARD in the kitchen, and doing well there. The living room goes up and down. I don't even want to THINK about the middle bedroom (storage room!!)

You might try aiming for one picture better for each room or concentrate on one room at a time if that works better for you :-)

Hmmm...

Today:
A) Livingroom - 3
B) Kitchen - 2
C) Bedroom - This is harder to assess. We have a big pile of stuff in the middle of the room, like in picture 5, BUT the bed is accessible and clear.

I've never really had so much stuff piled on the bed or couch that we can't use them.

Three-Month Goal:
A) Livingroom - 2 (or even 1-ish)
B) Kitchen - Is pretty good because DH has been working on it. 1.5?
C) Bedroom - This is a huge problem spot. Maybe 3?

Another big problem that I'll probably be working on before the bedroom is the diningroom, which is around a 5 or 6 with no access to the top of the diningroom table or to my desk by the front door. This is also what people see when we open the door to our apartment, and DH has expressed an interest in getting it cleaned up so it isn't so embarrassing to open the door to people (like the pizza delivery guy or the youth counselor picking up DS for the Snatch Breakfast).

By the way, the bedroom I assessed above is the master bedroom. The boys rooms are probably around 2 - 3 (although my younger DS's room is probably closer to a 1 after we worked on it the weekend before last), and I'm not too worried about their rooms.

I am wondering, are we all supposed to be shooting for picture 1 in all these cases? Is it wrong that I think picture 2 might be good enough? (Actually, now that I look at the pictures again, I only think that 2 may be good enough for the kitchen.)

I'm adding my problem areas

Kitchen drawers 2 are a 3, 2 are at 2 & 1 is at 1
Kitchen cabinets most are at 2 but I have 2 that are at three
Bathroom is at a one
Main bedroom closet is at 2
Closet in 1st guestroom is a 1
Closet in 2nd guestroom is a 4
Large linen closet is a 2
Small closet is a 1
Downstairs storage room is at a 6
Outside storage shed is a 4

Where would I like to be is a one on everything but will feel good if I can get the 2nd guestroom to a 1 & the closet at a 1 in the next 4 weeks.

Will continue chipping away at things. It took years to get this bad but hopefully less than a year to get it in shape & making myself maintain it. Carol

Here is a resource for all of us to use to assess where we are today and what our goal might be for each of us individually. There are three rooms (livingroom, kitchen, and bedroom).

C: Bedroom

Where would you like to be realistically in three months on the 1-9 scale with:
