Hi Everyone,
Carol that is what makes the wold go round is seeing good in others and being supportive.
There wouldn't be wars if everyone did that. In third world countries people help each other and share on a daily basis. In a sense I feel that they have more then we do. They have what is important. Being an artist I think that you are more sensitive to expression. That is why your art is so beautiful as you are.
Each day that I mingle say at a store or whatever I try to be someones angel and I appreciate those who are mine. You have brightened my week. Thank you so much.
Hugs, Judy

We ALL "opps"- LOL, just keep it in perspective. There is a new day tomorrow.

Judy, I've often thought it is soooo easy to complain, be angry at people, whatever- when something bad happens we ALL can vent on it or let the person know they are in trouble, etc. But how often do we "vent" (for lack of a better word) when people do something good? Just like the news on tv - the bad seems to get the attention. We need to get some praise out there for the good stuff too. Isn't it just as (or more actually) important? MOST definitely. You may be doing what you see as just something that needs to be done, but even if we can't do anything else you need to be recognised for what you are doing too.

Happy Valentine's day everyone.
Hugs, Carol

A bump on the road is understandable. Even normal. It's what you do about it that matters.

My pattern was to Oops and then rag on myself for not doing better. I should have known to go to my usual option - Plan B. Plan B is Be honest, Be as forgiving to myself as I would be to someone else, Bypass the Bump, and finally put my Best foot forward.

Gryph - It's ok to put in in the trash - whatever helps you get it out of your surroundings.

I oops too.

Good for you Judy. You deserve a pat on the back for being such a good daughter. It may sound funny to think that, but there are folks out there that won't lift a finger for anyone else including their parents. Hard to believe but we all know a few I imagine. Hoping your mom is doing better today but I thought you deserved some recognition just for being YOU too. Hugs.

Yes, I shop with a list always, and only buy things on sale. Have a freezer so can buy several of "whatever" altho these days I'm not buying anything to freeze as we'll be getting alot of venison soon... But I don't like to go out too often- too cold, so buy in quantity and don't have to go so often. Then have to cook alot at once to send with DH when he's on the road. Make things like stew/soup, 3 bean salad, etc. that are good for him and easy to eat or heat in his little truck "cooker". Also stretches the meat. Going to try making homemade granola bars- they should be better and cheaper too.
Have 2 large boxes and 3 bags stuffed full to take to the thrift store, but I don't get down that way often and not going to make a special trip in the cold plus gas cost. So they'll sit until I can get them there, but am glad to have that much ready to go...
hugs, Carol

I think I've hit a snag. I noticed that the first box of Things To Donate I put together (three weeks ago) is still sitting next to the kitchen door, waiting to go out. There is *nothing* in that box I want to or need to keep - but it still hasn't actually left the house.

Donating is great, but only if I actually do it! I seem to have greater success with removing things from the house if I'm actually throwing them away.

Sigh.

Do you shop with a list?

How about giving yourself 15 minutes of "me" time. Youd deserve more than that, but at least it's a start : )

Hi,
I haven't checked in in a while, but wanted to let you know I am doing well.
We have been getting one snow storm after another here, so I've been spending lots of my time clearing snow and ice.
I have been putting some new routines into practice. My house is still in terrible shape, but I have a few small areas that I have cleaned decluttered and I am maintaining those areas.
I still think of you at this site, because this was the first place where I felt people understood me, and the first place I began to understand myself.
Thanks! :)

I am sorry your Mom is having to struggle with her health. It must be very hard for both of you. And then your cousin dying too. More than one person should have to handle. My heart goes out to you as do my prayers.

Carol

I know what you mean about having so much on your plate and something has to be put on the back burner. There can't be 3 of you, but a helping hand would be nice. Since we can't be another you either, is there anything else we can do to support your efforts?

OK, here I am. I just have too many places to post to and don't keep up like I should- I also have alot of other things I'm trying to do, like paint for the shows coming up, practice my harp daily for 1 1/2 hrs., feed my husband (silly man thinks he needs to eat!), and assorted other "fun" stuff which we all have to do (You know- laundry, vacumning, etc.) Plus the piano lessons which I am sooo ready to quit teaching, and probably never will be able to! So, now you have my "excuses"!
I see there is alot here I should find time to check out. I just wish there were more hours in a day - or as my mom used to say, there needs to be 3 of me to do everything I want to do!!!
I thank you for the "nudge" to pop in and say "hi". I'm still here, just busy... emoticon

Hi Everyone,
Well with this cold they are trying to find warm places. Good for you Lynn for getting rid of the mice and also the stuff near the fireplace. Mice are a good motivation.
Gee where are Carol and the others I wonder. I miss them all.'

We had a rat which ate the poison we put in our pot drawer (after cleaning it out) below the oven. We found it dead outside and thought 'Whew - glad that's done!
'
But our dogs kept barking at the vent for the fireplace. We couldn't figure out why. I would hear this 'thunk' which I thought was in our fireplace. We tried traps - no success. Finally we put poison in the vents and in the bottom of the fireplace. Two days later the dogs stopped barking. I noticed a weird smell near the fireplace. I opened the vent to find three little field mice curled up together - dead.

I was motivated because it forced me to go through and get rid of most of the stuff around the fireplace. Now stuff and mice are gone.

Mice count as obstacles AND motivation : )

Gryph good luck with catching the mice. It is upsetting I know. I had some last winter but I have put blocks of poison where the kitty cannot get at and We had got rid of them.
Mine were cute however tiney little things with fur coats. I hated having to kill them but I didn't want to live with them. Hugs, Judy

Does a mouse count as an obstacle??

I'm going to be spending Superbowl Weekend clearing out a corner of my house - which is good, but probably having to throw everything out. The mice aren't in the attic, kitchen, or anywhere else we'd seen them. We thought we'd caught them all, as nothing has been in the traps for over a month, and it's cold. The mice would be inside, and we'd catch them, right?

No, evidently they've been living at the top of one of the tall shelves in the back room, the dratted things. I saw one scamper headfirst down what I'd *thought* was a sheer surface... looked closer... and that's where they've been hiding. *shudder* I had mice as pets as a kid - this is NOT the same. These are horrid, crawly mice. I want them gone.

THE MICE WILL NOT WIN.

My house WILL be mouse-free!!

Finally feeling better.
Back on track with dealing with my stuff which unfortunately had piled up for almost a week. 5 steps back, but now moving forward!
My job is to stay focused on my tasks and do them even when I don't feel like it.
The little kid in me is screaming, "No!"
The mother in me is screaming, "Do it or else!"
And Lynn the adult is saying, "Do it because you are worth taking care of!"
The adult wins today.

It seems if we use are energy to excel in one or two areas.
There must be a way to balance things out so we can get a little done in each area without binging in another.
Anyone got any suggestions?

Hi everyone! Sorry I have not been around to chat. I got a bit behind on the discussion.

Monday, I finally took the two boxes I had in my trunk for several days to Goodwill. One box had books, mostly from my son's shelves but some of mine as well, and the other had Christmas decorations in it. I thought Lynn's suggestion to donate the decorations before Christmas was a good one, but I didn't do it, at least not this time. Sigh.

I've been doing more with working out, tracking nutrition, and staying active on SparkPeople, but doing less decluttering/organizing. I should get back to it!

I'm here! I've managed to clear a small area of floor completely right down to the lovely tile floor I put down myself. Most of the "clearing" was putting things in the pantry (where they belong), putting them in a donation box, or throwing them out.

Hi Everyone,
Lynn I am sorry you are so sick. I hope you feel better soon. A cough and cold do ware you out.
I have done a little but not in the past couple of days as I have a cold of sorts too and it is so cold even though we have the heat up. So I tend to stay in the water bed. We have more snow and more again tomorrow. It has been bitter sub zero cold.

The good news is you recognized what you did by purchasing the yarn and you started a project.
Now make some other good news - finish the blanket :-)
Lynn

PS Still feel crappy today, but that's cuz it moved from my nose to my throat - deep coughing and exhaustion. But I'm still here as much as I can be for everyone - including myself.

Hope you feel better soon, Lynn!

I'm having a "bad yarn day" - I bought MORE yarn yesterday for a new blanket. Now, I did start the blanket immediately, rather than holding on to the yarn for years until I forgot why I bought it in the first place, but still...

... bit of a backslide. I'm trying to use the yarn I already have!

And in my other life, I knit. craftygryphon.blogspot.com

Having a bad hair day - lol.
Actually I am not feeling well which has zapped my energy and am down for the count for a day or two. It's nothing serious.
It's a good reason/excuse to stay in bed and watch the Australian Open tennis.

Judy -

Am sorry about the cyst - not fun.
Connecting the dots is, for me, still hard and scary. As I think about it, it is an evolving process.

Regardless, dots connected or not, there is still the day-to-day work each of must do to care for ourselves and our surroundings.

I have been keeping up with the cleaning as much as I am able, but not with letting go of stuff or not buying more stuff.
It's time for me to get back on that horse again.

I am inspired!

I just finished watching the most incredible women's tennis match I have ever witnessed at the Australian Open.

(In case you don't know much about tennis matches... To win the match you have to win two sets of six games. Normally if you get 6 games apiece you play a tie breaker - and win seven points by two or more points. You know the Aussies have a reputation of being tough. There are no tie breakers in the final set at the Australian Open. You have to win the match by two games no matter how long it takes.)

That being said...
A 31 year old (old in the professional tennis competitive world) Francesca Schiavone hung in there against 26 year old Svetlana Kuznetsova and won in the longest women's match in the history of the Open tennis tournament series - 2 hundred 84 minutes. That's 4 hours and 44 minutes of grueling, often excellent, and frequently captivating women's tennis.

They were tired. Their bodies hurt. Schiavone barely won the first set of three (6-4). Kuznetsova handily beat Schiavone in the second set (6-1).
Now, what's a girl to do???
After both players had won six games, Schiavone could have said to herself, "I am tired. That's enough."
Two hours into the set of what was supposed to have been six games long, Kuznetsova must have said to herself, "What the **** is it going to take to beat this woman. I get one game ahead and she just keeps on fighting for the match. I am going to have to step my game up a notch."
One hour after that, I imagine Schiavone saying to herself, "I may be one of the oldest women playing in this tournament, but that does not mean I have to lose. I am just going to keep on plugging little by little, bit by bit, and see what I can do."
After each of them winning 14 games, Schiavone won the last set 16-14. Her comment was that was the time of the most emotions in her life.

So I am motivated to follow Schiavone's method:
I am just going to keep on plugging little by little, bit by bit, and see what I can do.

For now what I can do is take care of myself by going to bed.
emoticon

When I get up in the morning, I am just going to keep on plugging little by little, bit by bit, and see what I can do.

We have a new topic:

Food, weight, activity, health, health, and hoarding. Hmmm. They may be connected.

This topic is created to explore if and how food, weight, activity, health, and hoarding might be connected.
It is a temptation to compartmentalize each of these categories into their own separate boxes. Perhaps boxing each separately serves a purpose.
This is the place to explore.

Put in your two cents worth (now inflated to a dollar - LOL)

Hi Everyone,
I know what you mean Lynn. I might straighten up but never really get rid of anything. I am learning to let go. It is a slow and limited process. But I am doing and that is important. And with you too..you are doing. Hugs, Judy

I'm glad, Judy, you have found a new relationship with God and a community at church to be a part of. Living a spiritual life can make a difference, lift one's spirit, and give renewed energy.

Perhaps you can find someone in your congregation to give you a hand when you need it. You are always doing things for others. It's not a bad thing to allow someone to give you a gift of service. Accepting that gift from another is a gift in and of itself.

As for me...
You know how some people will binge eat when they get stressed? When I get streesed about the slow progress with 'dehoarding', I go on a 'dehoarding' binge. My house looks a little better, but the problems aren't resolved.
My goal: work on 'dehoarding' daily, no excuses, so my level of anxiety level about letting go becomes manageable.

Hi Everyone,
GQ you sound like you could be my sister!!!! I could have written that same message. Amazing. Welcome. I have been improving aquiring less and getting rid of things.
Karen thanks for the compliment Hon but I am not that consistant. The pain controls me and if I am interupted like from a telephone call, that is it I don't have the courage to get started again.
I hate taking down Christmas trees and stuff. Now that my daughters grown we dont even put one up.
I would like a little real one, like about two feet tall but having so much to do with such a struggle I did't get one. I went over my daughters and she had a 10 foot real tree. lol
Housework is such a drag but now I really would love to be able to do it. Being retired I have the time but....I know how hard when you have to work and there is so much to do to nourish the children physically and mentally which is so important. Yesterday my daughter told me I was the best mother that she could ever have. She is 33 and I am so honored that she feels that way. doing things with your children is more important then having a spotliss house.
I don't know if I mentioned that I have a new relationship with God and it has made a world of difference for me. Plus I have made a lot of friends at church and it has really been very uplifting. Hugs, Judy

I hadn't realized until I had written today's blog post that my former out-of-control spending and my hoarding were connected. Since my house is still a disaster as much as it has ever been, I hadn't realized that, no, really, it *could* be much worse, except I've spent the last few years... not spending. (Or spending a whole lot less.)

If I hadn't made that change a few years back, I don't think I'd be ready to really make *this* change.

Weird.

And in my other life, I knit. craftygryphon.blogspot.com

Hi everyone! Procrastination has gotten the better of me this week, and I still haven't gotten my Christmas tree down yet, but there is some other progress to report. DH is helping reorganize my younger son's room and suggested that he pull some books off his bookshelf to give away. I wanted to rearrange the books in our bedroom some as well so that the ones I really want to try to read this year are more visible, so I pulled some books to give away as I was working on it as well. I still find myself clinging to books that may not be that useful to me, but I did find a dozen or so to give away. Now, I just need to get to getting the ornaments and tree packed up. I'm still planning to sort out the ornaments I don't want so that I can donate those as well.

Judy, I like how you make a little progress even with the obstacles (pain) that you have to overcome! You seem very consistent, and consistency is something I have to work on.

Lynn, it sounds like you need to work on consistency and balance. Those are going to be my focus this year, in both weight loss efforts and decluttering effots, this year. We can do it!!

Keep up the good work everyone! We'll get there eventually!

- Karen

Hi Everyone,
Lynn my husband will help a little but he is in pain too. When I do anything I force myself to do it. Otherwise I wouldn't move But there are things that have to be done. And really if I don't do it it won;t get done. So I do what I can do from chair to chair. lol
There are so many more interesting things to do so don't batter yourself. If we were wealthy we could have maids. lol Hugs, Judy

Judy -

You help so many people in your life, despite how you feel. Who helps you? Even if you only do one thing each day, big or small, you are ahead of where you were the day before.

I waiver between doing little, usually on days when I feel depressed and/or really tired and feeling good enough to take care of business, release things, and sometimes organize an area I've cleared.
The chasm between inadequate person and Wonder Woman is currently too wide.
This year my goal is to even out the highs and lows even more.
For me, that means acknowledging my feelings, but letting my head make the final decisions regarding what is healthy for me in the long run.
What I need to practice more is getting back up on the horse right away when I fall - no excuses or procrastination.

Change yourself. You are in control.

Happiness is when what you think, say, and do are in harmony.

Hi Everyone,
We all struggle in one way or another which results in losing control of our living space.
For me it is overwhelming as I am in so much pain and cannot do much. But it has always been a problem.
it has always been one thing or another.
But I do hear some progress with each of us. We are approaching it.
Karen good for you! Lynn I am proud of you too. You are approaching it. Red just choose one area to attack at a time. To look at the whole picture it is overwhelming. Hugs, Judy

Hi everyone! I have gotten behind on reading this discussion, but I did read the last few posts and plan to print out the Tyler Gore essay - or maybe I'll just save the link to read later rather than wasting paper.

After a long time of not doing anything about my clutter, I made some progress yesterday. DH had said he wanted to reorganize our bathroom counter after he had cleaned out under the counter when the plumber came last month. The plumber did not actually need to get under there (the problem was in the other bathroom which shares a wall with ours), but the stuff stayed out in a pile in the bathroom because DH wanted to reorganize it and hadn't gotten to it yet. (We are both procrastinators, it seems!) I was off work yesterday and decided to get the year off to a good start by doing the reorganizing he had suggested. I cleared the stuff off the bathroom counter, throwing away the unusuable stuff and the stuff I no longer use anyway, then cleaned the counter (which it desperately needed!). I put things back on the counter and under the counter in a more orderly fashion, putting away things that did not belong there and throwing out a few more things I decided I didn't need (like hairspray and hair gel I hadn't used in years!). I was so excited to get it all organized and get rid of the stuff I wasn't using!

I'm not sure how long it will last, but I have a mindset right now to get rid of stuff, maybe because it's a new year. I always feel a bit hopeful at the beginning of a new year that I will be able to make the changes I need to make. I find myself planning to get rid of the Christmas ornaments that I don't like as I put away the Christmas decorations. (I didn't do it before Christmas as you had suggested, Lynn, but I say "Better late than never!")

We were out of town from December 24 until January 1, and I'm still trying to get caught up on stuff at home and on SP. I hope everyone is doing well!

Thank you very much for mentioning the "Stepping out of Squalor" forum. I checked it out and read posts all day that made me feel that I was not alone. I also gained many insights. I will be spending a lot of time on that site! Thanks again, Suzie
