I work with an Autism specialist (only one of my students is diagnosed) who swears by Social Stories. They are beneficial for so many things.

I've met and worked with Carol Grey. She knows her stuff.

I too teach social skills to my students on the spectrum through modeling, social stories, use of peer partners, and visuals. Good luck!

In addition to my Julia Cook suggestion, there are several links to social narratives, complete with icons, to teach social skills. Try one of these links:

Although not specifically for ED students, EBD where I come from, have you tried social stories? Almost like comic books, short, opportunity for practice, and roll playing. I use them with my AU students, used to use them in the Behavior Disorder classroom too.

I teach social skills to students with autism, not ED. Michelle Garcia Winner had lots of great materials. I also have books by Jed Baker and Scott Bellini. I use video modeling, concept mapping, iPad apps, social stories, peer modeling/buddies and lots of visuals. Good luck on the dissertation!

I am currently working on my doctorate in special education. The focus of my dissertation is on the teaching of social skills for students with emotional disturbance. How many of you teach students that have an ED diagnosis? How do you teach them social skills? I am always looking for new ideas, resources, and approaches to teaching social skills.
