I have been natural for going on two years now and every time I hit the gym I am so grateful for it. I don't have to think about it anymore. Wash and go. I can swim and work up as much of a sweat as I want to and wash my hair and keep it moving.

God before everything. Peace above anything.

I cut my hair. I wash it twice a week (advice from a hair dresser. In between times I keep it in a ponytail. Use the dryer at the gym on low or wait till I get home & tend to it. I make sure it is conditioned every day to prevent breakage. I have been doing my own hair (except the cut) for over 5 yrs now.

We can do it! One day at a time. :)

I've read that you can rub some hair conditioner in your hair cover it with a swimming cap. You then just rinse it out. I was afraid to try it because my hair was really straight at the time and I thought that it would slip off while I was swimming. I'm thinking of getting a cap with a strap under the chin.

I have locs. Everytime I think of cutting them I think of this issue. I use to wear braids before I had locs that helped a little with the exercise. I would love to swim but I am scared it would weaken my hair but swimming is such a great exercise. They say if I but olive oil and cover it is will not be that bad. I wonder if this is true.

I got braids too. I just didn't want to deal with my hair being all over my head. Plus I sweat a lot and it would just be a nightmare trying to keep my hair in check.

I cut mine and have been natural for the last 8 years. I'm looking to have micros or kinky twists put in mine something where I won't have to do a lot to it (with my grand daughters help). I only have 1 hand to work with, so it has to be really simple and easy for me.

I've got to admit that I'm faking the nappy with afro kinky extensions. I like that I have so many options.

I second the kinky twists. You can rinse out the sweat and allow them to air dry. But this would be if you are napptural.

Happy to be nappy!!!

I've got my hair in kinky twists that I keep in a bun. It's light, washes and dries easily.

I have fairly long hair and I wrap it, put a cotton Nike headband around it and then wrap in a cotton scarf. Once my workout is complete, I remove the scarf, but allow the headband to remain in place until my hair dries. Then I remove the headband, comb my hair out, rewrap it and tie it in a silk scarf. By the time my shower is over, my hair is back to normal.

I opted out for texturizing. it still looks messy but after combing it falls back into place.

But someone suggested to tie it down

I've taken a que from some BBQ's who suggested working out with you hair wrapped and tied up in a cotton scarf. The scarf soaks up a lot of the sweat. And for the remaining hair that's a little damp, I use a wide tooth comb and the gyms hair dryer ('cause I work out in the morning)on a low setting to gently dry it (not high and not too hot). This and the fact that I get my hair washed and conditioned every weekend seems to do the trick for me.

Well for women of color we have a choice. 1. accept your hair in its natural state! 2. wear a weave 3. wear braids 4. cut in a short natural which many would not feel comfortable in doing 5. save $$$ for those extra trips to the salon. I am not advocating anyone go natural because that is a road you must go on your own but unfortunately given the texture of ones' hair when you go against the grain you will always have constant struggle with your tresses.

BE TRUE TO YOURSELF AND YOU WILL BE SET FREE!!!!

I have intense workouts too and sweat in my scalp. I put my hair in a ponytail to workout. After my workout I put kem oil in it. Because I workout after work, I allow my hair to air dry.
Some other bbqs wrap their hair during their workout. I talked to my hairdresser and he said to make sure the hair is well conditioned. He said that hair that is not conditioned well may break off because the sweat and styling heat can damage the hair.

Unfortunately, cutting my hair is not an option. A person has to have a face for short hair, and I don't. Short hair just don't fit my face, but it looks great on you.

I personally opted to cut my hair short.....it was the best decision I have made in a long time. I had fairly long hair, and because of my intense workouts and the fact that my scalp sweat while I work out it eventually caused breakage, so I opted for a short look. It's much much cheaper and care-free.

I got individual braids. I gave up the fight with having "cute" natural, pressed, or relaxed hair and exercise 5-6 days/week.

You know, this question seems to come up at least once a week. I know I've read some good tips from others on the topic.Perhaps we should put together a BBQ FAQs as a sticky topic.

Hello My Queens,

I have a major issue that I know most of you can relate too, my HAIR!! Okay, now I hate to sound like a diva, but I'm a person who wants to workout and reap all the benefits that comes with it, but I cannot workout and keep my hair looking nice. We all know how costly getting your hair done can be,sometimes I really have to choose between keeping my hairstyle and working out. This is just not right for us queens to go thru. Do anyone have any tips on how to maintain your hairstyle and working out.
