Those article don't mention bio-availibility, or what percentage is actually absorbed by the body.

The nutrients are there but since your body can't absorb them, it only makes for very good "fertiliser".

Absoprtion of iron from spinach would nornally be low but spinach is high in oxalates which binds with the iron and renders it unusable. And further more oxalates can rob the body of iron and when you're iron-deficient, this is bad news. You don't want anything stealing what little you have. So personally, I wouldn't touch spinach.

I've looked at some of the raw food info that rachelle suggested and will probably give Kale a try.

Dandelions fresh from the yard? You bet!

Obviously don't use any that have been sprayed or chemically fertilized and be sure to harvest them young before the flower buds even begin to develop - as the bitterness dramatically increases when they flower.

We have a small fenced in area in our lawn where we harvest our dandelions. Mmmmm Mm.

Raw Spinach adds plenty of nutrition. It has an abundance of Vitamin K, Vitamin A and Folate, full of antioxidants and carotenoids. It has all essential amino acids as well.

The iron is absorbed some on its own because of the large amount of fiber AND if you make your green smoothie with any ingredients containing Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) like oranges, strawberries, grapefruit, cantaloupe, kale, mustard greens etc the iron absorption dramatically increases.

The calcium absorption is increased when including foods with high amounts of magnesium such as spirulina, hemp seed, chard, radish greens, turnip greens, mustard greens.

Other greens good in smoothies: kale, chard, dandelion, turnip greens, radish greens, collards, parsley, cilantro, lambsquarter and the list goes on :)

I have done a lot of research and Kale is supposed to be excellent, collards, mustard greens, parsley, even romaine, the mixed baby greens and there were some others that are more unusual. There are a couple of raw websites that you can google. The raw foodist are experts as what good for your body things can go in a green smoothie. Since they rely so much on greens for nutrition, they really know what things are great for our cells and organs. Go to youtube.com and type in something like raw foodist green smoothies. I am going to do it as well. Another one is greensmoothiegirl.com.

I used to put a handful of spinach in all my smoothies. I've stopped now as I came to realise that the spinach wasn't really adding much nutrition as the calcium and iron in spinach aren't absorbed by the body.

So apart from producing green waste . . .

So my question would be, what other greens are good in smoothies?

I haven't but I hear that they are great as long as you KNOW they have not been sprayed with anything. I would only trust the ones in my own yard.

I would think so the first time but I would give my smoothie a name and add it in my favorites list as a new food and just click on it as add it when you have one.

I love the green juice. I throw everything in there. Including zuchinni, celery, bok choy and add a bit of ginger. I never knew there was so much green out there. Can't waite for the dandelions to start to pop out. Anyone tried them fresh from the yard?

Fresh is best but frozen spinach works just fine if you can't get it fresh. Do keep in mind though that if the frozen spinach is cooked, it will have a very different flavor than if it's raw.

I just joined this team and have not yet tried a green smoothie. These recipes look very interesting and I signed up for the Green Smoothie Challenge and checked out the revolution site. Guess it's time to see what my vitamix can really do. One question. Can you use frozen spinach if nothing fresh is at hand in an emergency?

I have been bringing my green smoothies to work with me for snack and lunch. Naturally, my students have been asking about them and wanting to taste them. They have been loving their sips, and already several parents have called to ask what I put into them. Yesterday, a child came to school with her green smoothie! Woohoo! So much better than those sugary 'juice' drinks they bring to school

HELLBILLYGRRL, according to the "Raw Diva's" you can mix any fruit with leafy greens and celery, not with any other vegetable. Hope this helps. Check out their site, it's great. Does anyone have any idea's for cilantro? I have been trying to add it to my smoothies for "inflammation" but it tastes horrible. Maybe we can add any information that we know about health benefits. Celery and cucumber are for "fluid retention".

Today I combined cabbage and carrots with apple and kefir. The carrots made it a little fibery, but it tasted earthy and good. I thought the cabbage and carrots would be helpful for getting my DH over his bronchitis.

We'll who can pass up a green smoothie/juice discussion. My mother in law has back problems so I brought my juicer over to her house. First we juiced plain pineapple juice, and drank it-yum. Then I juiced plain cabbage. Plain cabbage tasted really interesting. It tastes like cabbage, but if you didn't know it was cabbage you'd think you were drinking celery maybe. Anyways both juices are supposed to be good for back /joint problems I heard. Sometimes it's just interesting to juice or blend one kind of green just to see what it will taste like y'know. And yes I've heard apple is the only fruit your suppose to blend with greens too. But if adding another fruit every now and then will get you to eat your greens in the first place. It's not that bad right? I know sometimes I want to add agave syrup to a green drink, but I think no I'll add more apples or another fruit. Sometimes carrot can also help a green drink be more palatable. Happy Juicing! Enjoy your smoothie.

Never give up! Never surrender!

actually, there are some studies that show calcium can reduce the absorption of iron (not the other way around) but your skepticism should be more directed toward the milk. Humans are unable to absorb the calcium contained in milk because of the pasteurization process and the highly acidic environment milk creates in the body.

Well, I supplement with calcium & Vitamin D, so that doesn't concern me. As I said, I follow Dr. Fuhrman's Eat For Health plan & have smoothies with 1/2 bag of spinach & mulitiple fruits often. I would never be able to "eat" that much fruit & vegetables & reap the health benefits from it, he has many, many case histories of people being restored to health by changing their eating habits away from the standard American Diet to this way of eating.

I've heard that iron competes with calcium... so if you put spinach in your smoothies, you won't be able to absorb the calcium from the milk/yogurt. That makes me pretty skeptical about green smoothies. :S

There are many references in Natalia Rose's Raw books about not eating fruit with anything else. She explains it as a digestion thing, where fruits take less time and different enzymes than other foods and should be eaten on their own. She even recommends waiting an hour after eating fruit before anything else. I haven't adopted her ideas yet, but her theories are interesting to me.

You can mix greens with anything - that's one of the wonderful things about them. Fruit is a different story; you need to pay attention to what you mix with fruit. Complex carbohydrates and fats are generally not good to mix with fruit. It is often recommended to not include both fruit and veggies in your green smoothie.

Please do find where it says not to mix fruit with greens - I love learning more!

I don't know where I've read it, but somewhere it said not to mix fruit with green drinks (like collard/kale/spinach etc...), with the exception of apple. They say that apple can go with any green drink, but like pineapple and things of that nature no. I'll have to go and search for where I have found it. Some of these combos sound interesting and worth trying though. I tend to juice all vegetables together and then keep fruits separate. I might add some mint or parsley to a smoothie, but nothing like spinach or kale. Kale is so bitter emoticon I usually do kale with carrot and apple.

I don't like to taste the "green" in my smoothies, so I use baby spinach. I can add a half bag & never taste it. My favorite one contains, soy milk, Pom-cherry juice, strawberries, blueberries, cherries, flax seed, half a bag of baby spinach, & a tbsp. of unsweetened cocoa. Love it!

Jessica, try just one leaf at first of kale or collard greens. In a smoothie you can't really taste it - it'll just turn your smoothie a strange color.

Romaine is no where near the most nutritious of greens but it is better than other lettuces and it imparts a nice creaminess to the smoothie that can be good for those new to green smoothies.

I've been green smoothie-ing it since last wednesday and I love it. Lettuce is not the best flavor in the world. So I must admit that I am going to try spinach and see how that goes. I love to eat spinach so shouldn't be so bad. I notice that almost everyone drinks their smoothie in the morning. I drink mine in the evening because that is usually when I eat my vegetables so I am wondering if it makes a difference. Thanks for all the wonderful recipes I will incorporate a few of them seeing as though I am looking to move beyond the lettuce.

If I can see it, then I can achieve it.

We love our green smoothies! Have them every morning. My husband likes his in a solid cup if he's driving to work 'cause he doesn't want people to see the thick green stuff he's drinking!

My favorite way to make them is to combine juicing for the root veggies like beets and carrots and the citrus, then I add that juice to my blender, along with avocado (makes it so smooth!) lots of chard, collard greens, bok choy, banana, blueberries . . . If I use wild blueberries or beets, it will actually be a purple smoothy. I also add ground flax and bee pollen, ice and a little water. I try to mix my fruits up every day, but always have chard, collard greens and avocado in it. When I'm feeling a little more sore than normal, I will add in burdock root or sunchoke to the juice because they both fight inflammation and help with muscle recover. I'll also add pineapple and papaya (especially green papaya) for the same reason. Yum! M.Aja

Yep - the color tends to be the #1 reason why people don't "like 'em".

I've even done an experiment with a green smoothie in an opaque cup with a lid and straw so you couldn't see the color and found that almost everyone liked it as opposed to only half liking it when they can see the color. Many people won't even try them because of the color...

Green is my favorite color so all the more reason to love them :)

I just found out about this team, so this is my first visit to this site.

Your "recipes" are really interesting & creative!!!
(Maybe not so much the "commercials" for certain blender brands!!!)

I'm realizing that I've been making "green" smoothies for quite awhile -- but didn't know they were called that!!! I started adding the "greens" from my fridge because so many would rot because I didn't eat them. I basically haven't thrown away any produce since.

When I use pineapple, I scrub it before cutting, and then include the "peel" as well as the core. The blender, of course, pulverizes everything, and I assume that there is lots of fibre in the peel.

In addition to whatever fruits, veggies, nuts, etc. that I use, I also add a scoop of a ("home-made") spice mixture. Of course this is "brown" and, when combined with such things as spinach, the smoothie turns "army green"!!! Not appetizing to look at, but good for ya!

Hi I'm new just joined. So funny I just blogged about green smoothies today.
My kids and I have one almost every morning.

A standby recipe is:
2 large handfuls of spinach probably 2.5 cups
1 med banana
1/2 cup frozen fruit (I buy a large bag from costco)
1/2 cup organic carrot juice (I buy it at costco)
1.5 cups water

Whirl and enjoy!! I add a vegan rice protein powder to mine. I make my own almond milk so next time I'm going to use some of the leftover pulp and put it in the smoothie. My kids love this smoothie.

Another one:
2.5 cups spinach or a combo of spinach and kale
1/2 cup blueberries
2 bananas
2 cups water

Sometimes instead of a banana I use an apple cored but keep the peel on if its organic.

I make myself smoothies several times a week, but I'd forgotten about adding greens to the mix. I know I have done that ocassionally over the years, but need to make it a regular habit. Thanks for the reminder!

I found a great recipe for green smoothies yesterday. The recipe I found made a huge batch and was a little too high on the fruits, so this is my variation on it:

1.5 cups loosely packed baby spinach
1 apple
2-4 large strawberries
1 cup water

I have a kitchenaid blender and it works really well for making green smoothies. It pulverizes the leaves.

I also tried this one:
1.5 cups loosely packed romaine lettuce
1 banana
1 cup water

It was pretty decent. Not as good as the apple/strawberry/spinach one, but not bad. I got them from this website.

I just signed up, but apparently they send you a new recipe everyday.

I make a smoothie for lunch every day. I use pretty much whatever I have on hand, usually banana, blueberries, pineapple, cherries, pineapple, pears, apple, etc. Plus I always add a leaf of either kale or collards or spinach, and some red cabbage, flax seeds, sesame seeds.

I have a Vita Mix - the blender to beat all blenders! It will smoosh up anything you put in there. I use the center core of a pineapple and it doesn't even slow it down.

They're expensive - but worth every penny. They will do everything except mash potatoes. You can grind grains and beans into flour, knead bread dough, make hot soups, make frozen sorbets, grate cheese, make cole slaw, etc.

If anyone decides to order one (vitamix.com) use code # 06-001715 to save $25 off the shipping charge.

Oprah had this guy, David Murdock, on yesterday that is in his 80s and has the metabolism and health of a 35 year old. He drinks "smoothies" a few times a day. He juices his smoothies but they are a mixture of about 14 different fruits and veggies that all have health benefits to them. Check it out www.oprah.com/media/20090305b_tows_e

With the almonds I find I need to blend the almonds with a little liquid, I use milk first and then add the other ingredients. Otherwise I get bits of almonds in the smoothie, not quite the right texture.

I tried my first green smoothie this past weekend and I am hopelessly addicted! I had a friend that kept e-mailing me about her green smoothies that she mixes up in her Vitamix blender. I thought it sounded gross and I don't own a high powered blender so it took me a good long while (2 months!) to work up the nerve to give it a whirl (no pun intended) emoticon

I started with just one handful of organic baby spinach but have worked my way up to 3 cups (loosely packed)I've even tried it with kale. I expected that would change the taste a lot, but it really didn't. I bought some chard today and will try that either tonight or tomorrow. It is such an awesome way to get veggies into your diet, and raw ones at that!

I love the idea of the almonds, but will work with almond butter. In my blender I'd end up with a crunchy smoothie. oxymoron.

Another new thing I have been adding is almonds. The oils in almonds are appetite suppressants and they are great protiens.

I haven't tried it yet. I love my fruit smoothies but putting vegetables in it just doesn't set right with my stomach. I may have to break down and try it soon.

I know we have mentioned these before but I just wanted to share that I made green smoothies yesterday for myself and my husband. This is a great way to get in your veggies. I had fresh spinach on hand so when I made my pineapple, orange, and banana smoothie I added a few handfuls of spinach. I also added some almonds for protien and the smoothie tasted wonderful. You really can't taste the greens but the nuts give it a wonderful flavor as well as the protien boost.

Who else is doing green smoothies? Just in case there is someone who doesn't know what a green smoothie is it is when you sneak some veggies into your smoothie.
